Using automatic timer with a CFL

Hello,
I recently purchased a 200 watt CFL bulb for my orchid set-up. It says it is NOT to be used with a dimmer (which I don't have) OR an automatic timer. Why is this? What if I put it on its own timer?

I see no problem with putting it on a timer as long as it is all the way off when it's supposed to be. Some dimmers and other types of switches can allow some current to reach the bulb causing it to flicker or stay partly on. I have CFL's on timers and have no problems.

Dan, Royal is correct in their response. Most timers leave a small amount of current flowing to the fixture hence the flicker which kills the ballast. I use Swylite Timers which have AC Relays inside and they control my CFL's no problem whatsoever.

i think it could also mean not to use it on fixtures with sensors (the ones used outdoor which turn on when you walk in front), because these always have some current in.

That is correct. You can't use CFL's on motion detector or light sensor (dusk to dawn) fixtures. Not yet anyway........

I have several CFL and straight tube fixtures running on timers. I use appliance timers that are mechanical (they have little green and red clips you set for the hours). They are cheap and work flawlessly.
