you want it rough so the plant can grab hold so hit it with a wire brush.

If it isn't treated it is fine. I cut pieces from cedar fence slats for mounts.

Last time I did that, I found some cedars boards that were smooth on one side and rough on the other. As was stated above, you want the rough side.

By the way, for smaller plants, the cedar shakes they sell for siding workmgreat, too.
