I use an unraveled bag that held sand bags. I can pull out long strands of it, it's like soft plastic and I have green or tan ones. I guess it might biodegrade in several years but by then hopefully the roots have taken over.

Or use a hot glue gun and just glue your plant to the mount like Brad from "Brad's Greenhouse" does.

And possibly cook it in the process.

Oops he uses crazy glue not hot glue my mistake. He uses thick gel glue, like toothpaste thick. He also uses something that makes the glue dry faster.

Maybe I was thinking of using hot glue

I do have a friend that does mount bromeliads with cooled hot glue. I don't know if she has done it with her orchids yet. It should work, but you would have to pay very close attention to the temperature.

I use old pantyhose or nylon stockings. They are flexible, don't cut into the plant the way fishing line does and it blends into my wood and cork mounts nicely. I also find them very easy to work with since you can cut strands to the length and width that you need.

Arrow

In different situations I use different ties. I have a lightweight braided fishing line when I want flexibility (certain kinds of mounts for example, or when knot-tying is important). I use heavy stiff monofilament line for jobs like anchoring wobbly roots into pots. For certain mounts and anchoring tall plants to stakes, I use cable ties. I also use wired green plastic plant ties.

Since the fishing line is almost always a temporary aid in securing plants, I usually just buy the cheap stuff.

Interesting, never thought of using glue.

I use something similar to this:
https://www.amazon.com/Hi-Seas-Grand...est&th=1&psc=1

I use a more expensive fishing line... but, I originally bought it for bass fishing. Orchids don't fight as much as smallmouths .

I've used a variety of things, but my preferred is clear 8lb test monofilament line for anything I will be attaching with sphag. The spag helps to buffer the plant from being cut, and the sphag hides the line. Also, the line is very easy to remove once it is no longer needed.

If I am not using any sphag and just attaching the orchid directly to the mount, I like to use super glue (the dry in seconds type). I use a small amount not to smother the roots. I don't like it with the sphag for two reasons: it looks really white and stands out and I get sphag glued to my fingers which is not an attractive look.

For larger plants, I use green horticulture tape (the stuff that expands with the plant) and/or green twist tie.

The best thing that I have found is braided fishing line. A very thin line will hold 10 pouds or more, yet fit thru the eye of a needle.

You have to be careful tying knots, and mind you don't cut yourself with it.
