Orchids mounted on bone question

If I mount the orchid on a bone attached to the hat I could be a bonehead.

Goodness Mandy, see what you started, hee, hee, hee. I was looking at a video a while back and this guy was planting a small orchid in a fake human skull. I don't think I would want that around at all.

Haha I know, I should have asked about mounting on seashells, that's a pleasant subject O my goodness anything relating to human remains is really scary. Back in college, they always had real human bones that the students could study with and they creeped me out sooo much. Animal bones should do the same but so people (including my dad) had them in their homes as decorations where I used to live that they don't bother me at all

I wonder if anyone has tried mounting on sea shells. I have seen air plants placed inside conch shells, but not see anything mounted ON seashells. they could be kind of cute.

Since I first posted about mounting on bone, I have mounted a small Cattleya on a conc shell that I saved from a trip to the Bahamas and it's actually doing quite nice. I have some moss on it and the roots haven't actually attached to the shell itself. I'll post a pic tomorrow. It sits on my south facing windowsill looking fabulous lol it did receive some cold damage while on the windowsill but other than that it looks really nice.

Hey now that is worth a look. Do post a picture when you get a minute. I know what you mean about the animal bones. I have seen way to many to get groused out about them. I guess it's what you grow up around. But human, that's a different story.

The roots die before they get out onto the shell, this could be bc it's too cold (it's on my windowsill), my tap water is kinda hard, or the shell may not be a good thing? This is one of my catts I purchased from Fantasy Orchids last year and I mounted it in May. Since it has been getting warmer, root tips are growing again and it's finishing up a new growth and about to start another one. It has grown about 3 or 4 pseudobulbs since I mounted it. I would like to think it's happy (even though it's poor roots die before they can attached to the shell) My sisters and mom love this they saved a few conc shells from the trip too and had me mount orchids for them. My sisters is doing great and my moms died bc my dad and mom don't communicate about when the other watered the house plants and they watered it to death lol

If I remember correctly, one of my orchid reference books mentioned an early (1800's) import coming in on human skulls. Can't remember the species, but possibly from someplace in southeast Asia??
