so i found this in walmart today and i was wondering if it could be used to mount an orchid. the one i chose to experiment with is an orchid that has almost nothing to it.just one good root. my wife says i should give up on this one, but i dont want to.

I can't tell what that is made of. I'm not sure I'd try to mount an already sick guy onto something that may be questionable. If he goes belly up, you won't know whether it's because he didn't like the mount or if it's because he was just way too sick.

I think your little fella needs roots badly! I've always found that my orchids just inherently would rather be mounted. Even the sickly ones do better but I'd try just anchoring him down to something more natural looking. That's just me. Good luck! Let us know how it goes!

I agree. Those leaves are desperate for water.

Basically, what you have there is "scrubby pad" material, likely made of recycled PETE bottles and bonded with ABS. It looks a lot like EcoWeb and Epiweb, but finer in weave.

Those materials do not absorb water at all, so are not really good for mounting plants that like constant moisture like a phal, unless of course, you're willing to spray or dip it half a dozen times a day.

In addition to Ray's comment, I would add that I would try to get some more roots on that plant before trying to mount. I'd soak it then sphag and bag it.

Paul, When you say soak, sphag, and bag you mean. . . Well exactly what it means? How does that help exactly? I mean, if you bag it, wouldn't it somewhat suffocate the leaves?
