Tucker: that is a wonderfully healthy plant. Blooms are great too. I am thinking about mounting more of my orchids. They look better, more natural (duh). Why are you switching to cork tube instead of sticking to cork slab?

Orchids don't always grow the way we want them to. You never know which way they're going to grow on a mount. With a cork slab only the front looks like cork and the back is kind of flat and tan colored. Often the plant will grow around the slab and onto the back, which is fine, but it doesn't look as nice when displayed. Cork tubes have just recently become more available and it doesn't matter where the orchid grows, it will present a nice display because every side looks the same. I like the smallest cork tubes that are only two or three inches across. Tree fern totems have the same advantage of having four good sides so I like them also. I'm still trying to decide if I like mounting orchids better or growing them in wood baskets with large chunks of cork in the basket. The way I use wood baskets is like mounting on a horizontal surface. Here's an example of a small cork tube.

I bought a mini phal in October. It had 3 leaves. Now it has 6. The plant has a ball of sphagnum between it and the cork. It was also secured with thin florist wire. Some of the roots looked strangulated. Today I clipped the wire close to the plant and pulled them through. It is still wobbly near the top so I retied it with 100% cotton kitchen twine. And tied it to encourage some of the flexible roots to grip onto the cork instead of out in the air.
Should there be moss between the mount and the plant?
I am such a newbie. Sorry for the question.
