Mounting on clay pots - Orchid Board

Has anyone tried this method of mounting?

I imagine that the pot is filled with nutrient water? Would it still need spraying?

Haha, funny that this got brought up! I just mounted a tiny piece om my Bulb. nymphopolitanum on the outside of a clay pot. I would treat the plant like it was mounted on anything else and water the outside of the pot where the 'chids roots are with water and also do the same with fertilzer. Since my Bulbo is ridiculously small, I did put some sphagnum inside the pot, so that the porous clay draws water from the sphag and helps keep the plant wetter.

as in cool. correct me if im wrong, but it looks like youd just fill up the clay with pure water and the thing would like water itself. genius!!!.....thing is due to evaporative cooling, im guessing only cold lovers would like this method

It doesn't work with just any clay material, it needs to be one which is very porous so that enough water can seep through it to the plant.

That's a great picture. There are two orchid growers here in south Florida that mount orchids on clay pots. One of them turns a normal clay pot upsidedown and mounts the orchid on the bottom (which is now the top). She also sometimes mounts orchids on concrete blocks. The other grower has specially made long skinny clay pots with lots of holes in them. She hangs these pots up and mounts orchids on the outside. As far as putting water in those clay jugs, I don't know if that would work or not.

Thanks Camille for the link to Swampstick! I guess it would be a design choice between a clay jug made to look like a tree trunk or a real clay jug. I think that the mounted jug looks more unusual and as Omar says, sick.

For anyone wanting to experiment with this type of mounting I found an online site to order very porous clay jugs - they're called ollas and are used as an underground water irrigation method. It's peddlerswagon.com. I ordered one for some experimental mounting. If it works I'll post it.
