Default Landscaping With Orchids

For those of you interested in the topic...I've created a landscaping with orchids group on Flickr to centralize photos of epiphytic/lithophytic orchids growing on rocks and trees.

If you have any photos of orchids growing on trees/rocks either in landscapes or in the wild, we'd love for your photos to be added to the group. The photos of orchids growing epiphytically/lithophytically in nature help to offer ideas on how orchids can be integrated into landscapes.

I recently submitted a proposal to the Fullerton Arboretum on mounting orchids on their trees. It's a fairly detailed proposal and might be of some use if you've ever considered growing orchids on trees.

For some inspiration here are 500+ photos of orchids on trees.

Just ran across an article about a lady in Brazil named Lily Breda who convinced city officials to spend around $100,000 (is that right?) to attach 8000 orchid seedlings to trees in Brasília's botanical garden!!

Orchids beautify the city

The article is written in Portuguese but if you use Google Chrome you can click one button and Chrome will translate the entire page into English. Or you can copy and paste the text into Google Translate.

The translation isn't great. For example...the first couple of translated sentences are a little... well... off...

"For now, they go unnoticed. Are girls, tied with string to trunks."

...but you'll get the gist.

We do not prepare green houses for orchids because
we grow them out doors.
And I am growing them on live trees at the moment.
Or on cement poles.
There are pics on my gallery too.
I will post some more of them for you. I have mounted them on a clove tree bec that gives ample shades.

I was in the Bahamas last week at the Atlantis resort and I enjoyed seeing the Dendrobium they had attached to the palm trees. I would have enjoyed it a little more if they had had native species some where but the Den. hybrids were nice even if most weren’t in bloom.

Really beautiful may be. I am proud of my country
bec every home is having a pigeon orchid bush in their garden planted on a mango tree to get blessings from God.
Mango tree represent some female Gods' home and
Pigeon orchid is called as Wesak mal.
Wesak means our Lord Buddha's Birthday .
Those flowers bloom on that period particularly.
Meaning of Mal means flower.
See how our innocent people worship The Lord Buddha and the Goddess at the same time.
Now they started to mount Onceidiums and Vanda and dens too.
Luckily we do not have frost or hurricanes or
snow to protect the plant from.
Only rich people can grow orchids in GH's. Though We have to air condition them to reduce heat.

Default mounted oncediums.

Here you can see some
mounted orchids on a live clove tree.
Dendrobium with flowers and onceidium with flowers .
I am lucky to find camera to capture them.
The second pic of dendrobium is mounted on a 2"x2" wooden pole painted with wood preserve. . Tied with coconut husks.
