the mother plant is the mounted one from oak hill that i got a few months ago.

I guess you could call me a neat freak. I like everything looking like little soldiers all in a row so, for the most part, I train, stake and tie everything. Don't you think that the flower presentation is much better when the pseudobulbs and leave are all erect and straight? In addition to looking neater, they take up much less room and space is always an issue when you continue wanting to add to your collection.

i just let them grow wild like nature intended. i think it looks cool when the growths are everywhere and the flowers are randomly placed. it also makes a nice contrast in a show where most of the other orchids are perfectly upright in pots.

Little Stars?? Doesn't look so little to me. Very nice mount and I'm sure it will do just fine. I think some randomness is fine but when it comes to cats. dens. etc. I agree with Leisurely that they need to be staked as the flowers are big and make for a nicer presentation. The bonus is you can still have space for air circulation and have them a little closer. More is better, orchids that is!

I have a brassavola from Honduras it was given to me by a friend on the island I do not know if it has bloomed or what the flowers look like have to cut back old rrots that look dried out..its happy in the med. fir bark and new roots are growing but would love to mount it? Does the wood need to be sterile? And how do you mount it? Would love any help I could get. Newbie to orchids but excited to start a collection..:waving

I've never used 'found' wood for mounts myself, so can't help too much. Wood should definitely be very clean - I believe most people use some sort of product to kill fungus to soak the mount.

To mount a plant, just use something to secure the plant to the mount, and generally a bit of moss. People use all kinds of material to attach and secure the plant - fishing line, yarn, twist tie, fine wire, even panty hose ;)

You'll probably get more replies if you start a new thread - just go to the forum you wish to post in - Growing on Mounts, or Beginner forums would be a good place, but we aren't especially fussy about such things - near the top of the page on the left, after selecting the forum, is a button to start a new thread.

My Little stars is mounted on a 12 by 12 slab growths go all directions .
If it a collected mount I soak it in Physan or mild bleach water then soak in clean water several times before using .
