Yep, knew that, watched a documentary on them on PBS once. Very interesting. These, however, had a definite air of Mallard about them.

and dusty! Bet that thing had been setting on that shelf for a few years!
Oh, I have wraped the base in galvanized metal and reattached the wooden root with silicone and screws.
Now planning my attack on a display and putting it to use with some of my mounted phals that need new moss.

on bonsai i use lime sulfur but that is just to keep the wood from growing mold and other fungus and also to bleach it. i has to be re-applied at least once a year. use lime sulfur if you want to preserve the wood.

Thanks for all the suggestions re. the wood preservation. Since the "thing" was so inexpensive to start with I think I'll just treat it as if it were any piece of drift wood and use it untreated.
Hopefully today I will make some progress with it and get a plant or two mounted on it.
I have some plants on the way (Hurry Friday) that I think will fit in nicely with this so new pics are on the agenda.

Nice find Al. I'm sure all the creative juices will take over and you will have a great mount. Is it too big to have hanging from a piece of chain to use outside and have several guys attached??  |

No, it's not to big but might look strange as the "trunk" would be up side down if that makes sense.
Right now it is on hold, I'm waiting to see if the live moss I've planted around the bottom is going to "take".

And you really think that you would see the 'trunk' for very long  with a chid mounted near the base and lots of room for the roots to take hold? Send that wood down here |

Nope, it's not a traveling piece of wood.
You have given me an option "C" tho if my options "A" and "B" don't work out. In fact, I moved your option up a notch so now I also have an option "D" !!!!
I'd like to keep the 'chids in proportion with the size of the "tree". Sort of like a bonsai that has passed on and the 'chids have taken hold.....
