Use of Listerin on mounts

got a question. In browsing through new posts I read that some use Listerin mouthwash as a spray for mounts. My question is how much do you use with water like half and half? Also how often should you spray? I also heard of using alcohol any recommendations? I will be mounting six windowsill catts next week after my Orchidarium arrives on Wed.
I have been waiting for ever it seems for that thing. Its going to be like starting all over again growing orchids in the Orchidarium. So much to learn but I know where to get all the answers the OB

I never heard of Listerin on plants before. It is stated on my bottle that you should spit it out without rinsing your mouth with water afterwards so I think that you need to use it without dilution but I do not recommend it. Just think of the smell! I think there is better and cheaper things to use on plants (physan 20). And remember, Listerin retard germs to grow not fungus or bugs.

Ethanol in itself is a disinfectant if it´s consentration is over 70% but it is quite slow, needs time to work. Usually it is mixed with soap water to clean of bugs and their residue. (Ethanol is a good solvent) To use it to kill germs you need to high concentrations an to long time not to harm your plants.

Though Ethanol is a mayor part in many products it is often use as solvent and not for it´s properties as a disinfectant.

I use it all the time! I get the store-brand of the original brown Listerine and keep it full strength in a spray bottle. Whenever I see something I don't like...spots or mold etc...I just give the plant a spray It seems to be working and I always have it within arm's reach.

Ranchnanny - what kind of 'alcohol' do you mean? Isopropyl? Any other kind might be wasted on the orchids and better for drinking

Magnus I read it on a thread from last year I think and Susanne B. uses it all the time with good results and she uses it full strength. Oh Dorothy I would use rubbing alcohol not the good stuff I also read that some folks use water and rubbing alchol in a spray bottle. I will try anything that works. In fact I use Jerry Baker's Granma Putts tonics on my lawn and neighbors can't believe how green it gets.

Sheridan, congrats on your new orchidarium (welcome to the dark side ). I'm not sure why you feel the need to spray your mounts prior to mounting your plants. If you want to try to discourage molds, etc. you'd be better off spraying with a strong solution of Physan 20 as a preventative. The label says for orchids to use 2 tsp per gallon water (I use RO) and spray "anytime disease other than rot is evident." (Emphasis is mine.) So you basically can just mount up the plant dunk it in KLN solution to encourage new roots, and just wait to see if anthing other than rot occurs. But certainly the listerine won't hurt anything.

I received an email saying Listerine will repel mosquitoes if sprayed on an area outside .Never tried it .

Ross thanks for your it is most welcome. I don't intend to start the listerin the moment I mount my orchids. I was just gathering info . I suppose a person can pick up Physan 20 at most garden depts. as well as the KLN? If not who would you recommend getting them from ?
Got a small S/H kit coming today and plan to pot two orchids with the PA and see how that works.
There should be a law about having so much fun
