first time mount

First think I want to say is that this board is feeding my orchid addiction. Now that is out I can continue.

So I decided to try mounting a 'chid. I had a small den. Woon Leng in a 2 inch pot and it was looking like time to repot. So I did what several writer on here have talked about and potted on the bottom of a pot. I half filled the pot with sphagnum and have a plastic circle glued into the pot to hold the moss. My thought is that will provide a little extra moisture. Using fishing line is harder than anyone said so in desperation I went with rubber bands.

Any suggestions to make it easier on the next mount? Also how long will it take for the new roots to take hold? There are quite a bit of new roots in the moss.

Nice job! I think they attach with new roots or new root growth. New growths put out new roots. I have bought mine already attached so that is just my guess. My Cattleya aclandiae was just introduced to cork this week so I will see how it goes. Good luck, have fun!

It looks like you've done a good job. There's a commercial grower here in Ft. Lauderdale who mounts a lot of orchids on the bottoms of clay pots, just like yours. I would expect the plant to attach to the pot pretty quickly. It's springtime so roots should be growing well now. Good luck.

So question, do you put water in the saucer or do you water by taking it to a sink and pouting water over it with this method?

Looks good! I have a small Neo division, currently mounted on a bit of grapewood - been doing well, but I hadn't taken into accout the LOOOOOONG roots that Neos get - the wood is just not big enough. I've been debating what to do with it - seeing your post - maybe I'll try similar.

Paul, I do a little of both. I do keep water in the bowl but at least every other day I take it to the sink and water it. I don't think the moss I put in the pot holds as much water as I hoped.

my one is a bit on the down side as i have forgoten to water it for a while but u should go ok with it just do not forget to water

When I mount I prefer using dental floss! I think it is easier to work with. Just a side thought!
How is the plant now?

I will have to remember the dental floss. I think it would be easier than fishing line.
As for the plant, it is doing well. The roots have taken hold which is good as the fishing line is really slack and the rubber bands rotted off after about a month. I have had new growth on the plant too. I hope I can get it to bloom this year as I haven't had luck with it yet. When it does I will be sure to take pictures.
