Mounting on wood
I mount many of my orchids on several types of wood. Thanks to recent storms, great pieces of wood were easily found for free. I add an eye hook to the top and hang in a tree. That way I can bring inside when it blooms.
Yes, during dry season, need to make sure water more often as the roots can eaily dry out.
I tie down with fine gage galv wire from hardware store. easier for me to handle than fishing wire. Also, fishing wore is very thin and I worry about it cutting into my plants.

All redlands shows are great! But the Miami International Show and the Ft. Lauderdale shows are not to be missed. Recently, we have been attending various shows arounf the state and find most are small 10-25 vendors. The Miami , Ft. lauderdale, and Redland show (fruit and spice park ) have over 100 vendors. Yes, we are spoiled.
Do not miss the World show in Miami in 2008. That will be spectatcular.
BTW- tips on large shows:
Bring a shopping cart.
Know what you are buying and if it will grow for your area. Maybe bring a good orchid encyclopedia. (sorry but many vendors lie or do not understand the very different climate we have in South Florida.
Bring a camera - the displays are out of this world.
Bringa friend - or you look like a psycho walking around saying ooh and ahh to yourself all day
Plan the whole day - even if you leave before sundown you will be to tired to drive home.

Another thing to use for mounting orchids is strips of panty hose. That's what i use and it is gentle on roots plus it lasts long enough for the plant to establish then it rots off.
I was at the Redland show two years ago (2004) and had a blast. My Mom and a friend went with me and we spent all three days hanging out at the Fruit and Spice park. We even brought back a few plants on the plane with us thanks to the availability of Phyto and Cites paperwork. I highly recommend going. I'm going to try and get back there in 2007...may see some of you there!

I haven't been to a Redland show....YET. This coming year, I am going to make an effort to go. I think this yr, our orchid society is going to make a weekend trip out of it. I am sure I will doing alot of WOWING!!
At the next orchid society meeting, we are having a speaker which is a local grower, bring some plants in so we can mount them on some grapevine. Not sure what he is bringing but I am sure it will be helpful for some of our members.

Warning to you guys who wanna use fishing line for mounting. I have in the past used fishing line to mount orchids. Not after I had them mounted for six months the fishing line started to cut into the roots. If you do use fishing line make sure there is a generous amount of sphagnum moss between the orchids roots and the line. I wish i had some pictures to show you guys what I am talking about.

Wendy...try to get down here in January 2008 for the World Orchid Conference!!! 
Hotels are already being sold out for that time frame so if anybody's planning on going and staying in the area, I suggest you start making your travel arrangements soon.
I'm going and it would be fantastic if other OrchidBoard members who are going made arrangements to meet somewhere on the premises.

Excuse me if I sound naive. It is the first time I came across the word keiki earlier on in this thread which I understand is a Hawaiian word for baby. Is this the term normally used by American orchid enthusiasts or it is generally accepted by all? Here we use the word anak meaning baby on anything...animals and plants.
