Driftwood Mount Project - Orchid Board

So last week my husband was happy to tell me that HD had a piece of driftwood with plant rings attached to it and I might like to have it for some if my chids.

I went to check it out and it was about 4' tall and on a concrete base. I had recently been to a garden center and they had pieces of cypress driftwood, they mostly were huge sizes
for landscaping.

Check out the piece I found to make my own freestanding plant tree mount. We filled the bucket with quickcrete concrete that I tinted with terracotta color. #50 bag. placed 3 stakes in the ground to tie this guy off and keep upright till set. The quickcrete set in about 40 minutes but I have to wait 5 days before removing form the bucket. Oh am I gonna have some fun now!!

Awesome! That's a great piece of wood. I have seen those at the Depot. Not nearly as nice as yours. The wood wasn't as nice and they used a colored clay pot and then put Chattahoochee stone on the top of the concrete. I was toying with the idea of making one. Good job!

That is really a great piece of driftwood. I'm anxious to see what you do with it. Get your creative juices flowing now so you are ready when it is dry.

What a nice husband you have to be looking out for interesting things for your orchids.

Keep us posted with what you do with it. The ideas could be endless.

I talked to the Rep. that supplies the ones for HD and she was not sure what type of wood was used. That worried me.

Didn't want it to rot after a couple yers. The piece I bought is cypress, most likely came from the Louisiana bayou. Should last a looong time. I know its been sitting at that garden center for a couple years at least.

I'll keep you all posted. Already have my Sanish moss and planning which catts are being moved. Got a noid den that could use a new home too.

I actually have two of those HD stands you are talking about. I think your piece of wood is nicer. I added some plant rings to the stands I bought so they would fit more plants. Here is a picture of one of mine:

Lorraine Your cypress wood looks wonderful I can't wait to see it all dressed up with 'chids'. I envy you all down there in Florida being able to put your orchids outside.
We have a new HD now in Redmond, Oregon but they don't sell anything like that around here. Its much to cold here although our summers are quite warm and short.

Hi Karen,

The one you show looks better than the one they had here. Looks like you have 2 pieces of driftwood in yours. I only saw the one with 1 piece & not very interesting. Nice going adding more rings. I may add a ring or 2 depending on what I decide to do.

FYI the piece at HD is called "Bromiliad Rain Tree" they have 2 with the same # but 1 has plants already attached to it and the other has the rings on it. The supply company is "Costa" selling here for $129. HD might be able to order it for you in other areas. The Rep said they are all about the same size.

Hi Lorraine--
Yes, the Bromeliad Rain Tree are the exact ones I purchased last year.

You did have to pick and choose. The wood on some wasn't as nice, like you said. Also they had different amounts of rings. I chose two that had six rings each and added a few more to them.

I just love your piece of wood though. That will be awesome when it's finished.
