Misters and Routine Watering
Default Misters and Routine Watering

I have a 10x12 greenhouse with vandas, catts, oncidiums and dendrobiums. I am contemplating adding a misting system. So here are my questions:

1. Can I mist on a daily basis, and do my regular watering when required? Will the plants be too moist, or will the mist dissipate over the 4 foot "fall" to the plants?

2. Will the misting leave water marks on the flowers as the house heats up during the day, and the water droplets dry up?

3. Would two misters cover the 10x12 space adequately?

Thanks

In heat and high humidity many orchids are prone to rot if they stay wet too long. Not many people wet all their plants in pots every day.

Most people who use misters to water their plants in an open greenhouse grow the plants on mounts, not in pots. This gives them a chance to turn on the misters once, or several times per day; the plants get wet, then dry out some between watering.

It is conceivable you could turn on the system and water the whole collection every few days if you left it on long enough, but most people's plants dry out at different rates, needing varying watering intervals.

Many other people use the misters to raise humidity, not to water the plants. They water their plants the normal way, and have sprayers under the benches to increase humidity. This way the mist stays off the plants and reduces risk of rot.

If you allow your water to dry on your truck windshield and it leaves spots, it will leave spots on your plants.

Mister coverage varies wildly by manufacturer. It is dependent on pressure in the system and the nature of the emitter. Most true misting heads cover a lot less space than you are contemplating. Lawn sprinklers could wet your whole collection.

What is your goal in misting?

If you want an overhead watering system, spray heads are better than misting.

If you are trying to raise the humidity, you really don't want to wet the plants anyway. Misting in the aisles or under benches is the better idea in that case, unless the mist is so fine that it will evaporate before hitting the plants.

I don't know about anyone else, but I love my jaybird 700...I am working with my second one now...as I sold the first one when I closed my nc greenhouse....

it sits on the benchtop (tho they sell ones to hang) and I do direct the mist over the plants...it is pretty moist in the first 3 feet, and it hits the hanging pots too...

it operates on a humidistat, set at 50%....I am in an arid environment normally...the top of texas...and it also helps to cool the gh some...I also run an evap cooler....

you just have to find one that suits your environment!
