day 5, and we are both really tired....at some point we will have to rest a day, but it is so exciting seeing it grow! so, today, as with all house projects, we ran into more than we expected on the back garage wall. it was cedar siding, but very old. I started to cut into it to fit the roof, but it was yucky, so we ended up demolishing the exterior covering. sigh....

so we got all the old cedar off, ran to the lumberyard to get new sheet siding, and we will jump on that in the morning. today we finished aligning the rafters and the side wall posts, making adjustments, dry fitting a polycarbonate sheet as we went. this will make it go smoother when we put the actual roof panels on.

I only took one photo today, mostly to send to our electrician to put him on notice. I will be ready for him and the plumber by the end of the week I hope!



while doing all this work yourself is exhausting and time consuming, I highly recommend trying it. by posting my 'back porch greenhouse' and this one, I am trying to encourage all you younger things to try doing this yourself! is is so very rewarding! good growing!

Great job though. And I would love to do this one day. I fear I won't be anywhere near anything considered young by the time I get around to being able to do this.

day 6! lordy, that back wall was a doozy! but, its up and trimmed, and the garage window figured out. I put some builders Styrofoam over the glass part of the window. we will use silicone to 'stick' it to the rafter there, and cut around the rafter so you don't see it when its trimmed out....I have scratched my head a bunch on this build!

we had to do a little strangeness where it joins the house, as I am afraid of snow drift and torrential rain would cause damage to my polycarbonate. I put some of the siding material a little higher than the rafters that butt up to the wall. it makes a greater slope, so rain or snow will slide off faster I hope. a rain barrel system will work good here.

we put up one sheet of poly today!! YAAAA! it isn't totally secured yet, we are eyeballing every angle. it is at the back by the garage so it wont show if we fumble it!

here are some shots of the first poly sheet....it is held down by a board, and the way it is attached...








the last photo is of our workhorses...we could not do a thing without them, and like my dad told me, buy the best tools you can afford, you will regret it later if you don't!

I wish I could figure out how to make my photos land straight! I tried putting some in my gallery, and they still are sideways...oh well....

thanks! I did take your advice today! being the seventh day....the preacher at our local church came by one sunday afternoon, and saw us all out digging a huge hole for an oil tank....we really did not want another winter with only two fireplaces....so all us kids were hauling out buckets of dirt...the preacher scolded dad and just got out a few words when dad interrupted and said, 'and doesn't it also say in the bible, that if thine ass is in a ditch, dig it out'? lol...our little butts were sure in the ditch that sunday.... I was brought up to work till the job is done, but hey, I like it!

Cool, and I'm glad your husband stood up for you all. Preachers don't know everything.

I guess it is expensive to build one....depends on what you call expensive! we bought the polycarbonate and equipment (fans exhaust heater and shutters) all on sale at farmtek... I prowl thru the 'deals and steals' all the time! cost us around 800$...that load of cedar cost $800...the cement blocks and wall stuff cost $300. we have a door(I wanted French doors, lol but they cost too much) we still have to pay the electrician and plumber, that scares me!

but it was always my dream to have a greenhouse outside my bedroom too....so we are budgeting it in! my cohort and partner in crime is so good to me! besides he loves gardening and building too...I am teaching him a lot! its amazing what you can do when you set your mind to it....don't give up! ever! I am old, but determined....never let yourself become defeated!
