How low can we go? - Orchid Board

Uh oh- I just looked and the minimum temp last night on the gh was 44!

I dont think there is any major damage, they have been living at pretty low temps for awhile now so it wasn't a shock. There are catts, onc, a vanda, and some dends in there.
Now I am faced with two things- bring in the plants and risk aphids, spider mites/bugs inside, or cross my fingers and hope for the best with them outside. What would you do?

Won't it get a lot colder in Oregon? I would bring them in, but I don't live in Oregon, so I am not to familiar with the winter temps.

Hi ami

I don't let any of my 'chids go below 50...if you want to take a chance with what you have, I suggest at the very least, protect the vanda. It has the most aversion to cold than most of the others.

I would grab "the big guns", spray them and bring them safely inside.

At that temperature, it is likely the vandas will "stall" for a while, but the others are probably just fine. I would not risk it lower, although it's really the freezing point that'll get them, but keep a close watch for fungal infections.

Just finished moving every plant from the lanai into the orchid room and hubby is going around the property wrapping the landscaping stuff. We're expecting 32 here tonight, 40's all day tomorrow and a low of 21...yes 21, here tomorrow night!!! It'll be the longest period of time that the heater and ceiling fans out there are running constantly...ever!!! The thermostat will be set to kick on any time the temps go under 52.

I have an unheated greenhouse but bring all my chids inside for winter. That means on a windowsill during the day and putting them all on the diningroom table at night!

Ouch!!
Luckily my phals are inside along with anyone that is too picky about the temps. The Burr. is actually spiking, but I am going to have to really watch the others for fungus.
It probably wont get much colder here. (fingers crossed) Sometimes we will get a small snow spot in Feb, sometimes it is 70. You never can tell...
The funny thing is I had already brought 2 of the vandas inside and they already have shot out a root on one and a spike on the other. I think the other needs to come inside too. Maybe orchid torture isn't that bad...

I never bring mine n unless its going b elow freezing. But they are ona completely closed in glass porch. I've onl lost a couple and they were to close to the glass.
