I have my greenhouse somewhat under a bradford pear tree. It gets full sun up to about 3:30. I still have 60% shade cloth on and it still seems to be plenty of light for all my orchids. Even my maxilarias and cats do fine and bloom well. Then in the winter the leaves shed and I get full sun all winter long. It really helps cut back on the summer heat though.

I think the point of a greenhouse is for the free sunlight!

I'd either chop the tree down or modify it so it works like JMLand's tree. You have any pics of the area we can see?

I think you might have to post a few more time before you can post pictures though...

After a rain storm about a couple of days ago I might advise against placing the greenhouse under a tree. Half of the tree fell and nearly hit my greenhouse.

The greenhouse is fine. Though I have yet to decide what to do about the bradford pear. I'm thinking a drastic cut back is in order. But I do love the mid day shade it provides. And when its 105 out, a little shade helps.

garh, I have big douglas firs about 30 yards from the greenhouse to the south and east. In summer it works out great as they don't block too much sun, and provide afternoon shade.

In winter it just stays shady all day. Its not the ideal. I'd rather have control over that sort of thing if I had my choice. but sometimes you get what you get, and make due.

I personally wouldn't build under a tree though - to the east of the tree (afternoon shade) is what I'd go for if its possible. But overhead / direct southern shade is not ideal.
