The jade is about 33 yrs old. My wife tries to give it away every time someone admires it. It's about 5' tall and is 40" wide. It gets trimmed each year when it gets moved outside. It can't fit thru the door any more. It is stunning at Christmas time when it flowers. I'm not sure what triggers the flowering but every other year it is completly covered with them.
In the summer, it's outside in dappled sun and I only water it with a weak solution (1/2 strength)of MiracleGro or Peters when it first goes out. If the leaves get mushy to the touch I might water it again, but it usually rains enough so watering isn't needed.
It comes inside before the frost(most years- I've missed once or twice, only lost a few leaves) and is stuck in corner where it gets limited indirect light. Once again, I only water if the leaves are mushy to the touch. Most years, I don't have to water
at all.
I think the real trick is to pot it in a sandy mix -1/2 builders sand(not beach sand)1/4 potting soil & 1/4 peat moss. Feed it in the spring only. Water it ONLY when the leaves are soft. When in doubt, DON'T.
Also, don't be afraid to trim off branches growing too much to the side. You want the main growth to be going up, and they do grow like weeds in the spring/summer.
