This is a first bloom seedling I purchased from Woodstream Orchids back in June 2009. It's one of their mini/compact Phrags. They were trying for pastel to white flowers. This one didn't exactly hit the mark though the pouch does show the striping the one pictured on their website had. I'm not unhappy with it at all. The shape and texture are great, and the color is a soft coral. I think it's a keeper!

My Phrag Eric Young is sending up two new spikes after blooming this spring. However, the first spike is doing something strange. I grow it in an east facing window with an overhead 40 watt cfl, as the window gets very little sun this time of year. At night, when the drape is closed, it bends almost horizontally toward the window; 1st pic. It straightens up, sort of, around noon; 2nd pic, and by one or so, bends almost horizontally away from the window. It's been doing this for three or four days now. It looks pretty healthy, but I'm totally at a loss as to why it would bend so dramatically so much. Any ideas?:scratchhead:

Hey everyone! It's been a long time since I posted on Orchid Board; I've been very busy but I am now starting to read the forum more actively again. Thought it would be nice to share some pics of Cyps that bloomed in my garden this year. Some of these were new acquisitions for this year and some I've had for a few years. There are around 30 Cyps in my garden that I have collected over the past 8 years, though I have only had most for 4 years or less. They have taken the place over! I didn't have a lot of time over the spring and summer to take pictures, so I only have a few, but I hope you enjoy them!

In order, the pictures are: Cyp Gisela, Cyp Emil, Cyp Ulla Silkens, another Ulla Silkens, Cyp Emil again, Cyp parviflorum var. pubescens, Cyp montanum, another Cyp montanum, Cyp reginae, and Cyp passerinum.

They are potted in bark and the medium is kept moist. They spent the summer outdoors and have yellow-green colored leaves, no root rot, and get plenty of light. What am I doing wrong? They get rain water for moisture and are fertilized weakly. I'm at wits end as to why these two refuse to respond. :thanx:

Hello everyone! I have a Phrag. Mont Fallu that I repotted into S/H some months ago. I saw new root growth which continues. The tips of the leaves started browning which I heard can be from too much fertilizer. So I stopped fertilizing itabout two months ago. It started growing new leaves from the center but the older leaves continue to brown. I'm using water from my sink to water it like I do all my other orchids. Please help, thank you!

I bought this phrag last summer, and I believe this is my most expensive single orchid I've ever purchased (not that I spent big bucks, mind you, but more than I would normally). I've been babying it with distilled water and singing, cooing, and I've almost got the cartwheel down pat. This picture was taken today. I'm getting very excited! :bananaslide: And of course, I will post a picture of the actual bloom as soon as it happens.....well, as soon after I pass out cigars, that is. : Smilie_happy_peac

I got this one last winter as a division from a stud plant and it's the first phrag bloom I can take credit for. 'Mini Me' has a smaller leaf span than the regular Jason Fischer, with a bit smaller flowers in a deeper red. Hard to capture the true color of the flower. It's actually a darker red than what's in the photo. Thanks for looking.

I have grown this Phrag Sedenii for I don't know how many years. I have always had some leaf tip die back (as if you hadn't already noticed) with some years worse than others. This plant was moved into S/H about a year ago. Some of the newer growths are not exhibiting salt problems (yet). I have been told that it can sometimes take well over a year for the die back problems to disappear. Can any one tell me if that is true? Thanks.

Sorry for the quality of the picture, I wasn't the one taking it. This was taken june 24th, at Mount St-Simon, near St-Mathieu in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region of Quebec. I found them from 50 meters altitude up to the highest point of the mount, which was 215 meter. I found both the regular variety and the sanguinea, but I can't find the picture that was took of it.

I'm back from vacation and I was afraid this plant was too dehydrated when I came back (my first thing was to check my cyps when I came back!). However this is my best blooming of this parviflorum var. pubescens! The six large blooms just opened this Saturday and I'm very pleased. I saw a tiny wasp fly by too during the photo shoot.:D I thought I'd share, thanks for looking. I've had this plant for three years, starting from a two stem plant.

It grows in approx. 12 inch pot, sunk into the ground. It grows near spruce trees and gets eastern sun from the morning until early afternoon. I may move it into are larger pot after next year if it gets too big, or plant it permanently in the ground.

I have a Cyprepedium tibeticum which I wintered over in the fridge. (I was told it is too wet to leave it outdoors in winter in Wisconsin because of excess wetness during snow melt). I put it outdoors about a month ago and have covered it every time frost was possible. It seems to be doing ok, but the growth is very slow. It is only about 2 inches tall with just 2 leaves. Is this normal or do I need to do something more?

I'm looking for some tips on growing Phrag. sedenii.

I got a division from a proven performer at a local orchid greenhouse last fall and it's just been sulking since I got it. It's in a mix of Aussie Gold and long fibre sphagnum. It resides in my east facing bathroom window, standard room temps. I've been keeping it wet and fertilizing with 125ppm MSU every other week.

Any suggestions for a cultural change or to give a a kick start?

Thanks.

Cheers.
It has finally decided it's pretty happy, which of course makes me very happy. I'd forgotten this is a mulitfloral Paph. Looks like three buds on the way. Now starts the long wait for bud maturity...

This plant has been in bloom since November 2008, and is on its second spike.
This is defintely a good compact Phrag for those looking for the green long petaled looks. It also as beautiful grass-like foliage. Its compact nature also is passed on to its progeny, such as in more colourful hybrids like Phrag Olaf Gruss.

This species must be kept wet at all times though, but that is not difficult through sitting the plant in a tray of water. It grows in rainforests directly next to the river in nature. I used to have in a pot sitting in water, but now I decided to put it into a glass vase.

These are very rare this far south and west. We saw about as many blooms in this one spot than there are known locations in Texas. Very cool.

I recently visted Kew Botanical Gardens in London (UK) and among other things saw this wonderful Cypripedium.

It was one of few specimins which did not have a label and I asked the people working there what it was.

They told me Cypripedium xxxxx but while I remembered the Cypripedium bit I did not managed to remember the rest of it. (I was taking photos of all the name labels to help me remember but could not do that for this one).

I'm pretty sure he said it was a species but can't be 100%

Anyone seen one like this before?

So I just ordered an ecuadorense, I have so many paphs but always stayed away from phrags because of their size.

I read on another forum this would be a decent beginner plant since it's relatively small in size and fairly easy to grow. I wanted a bessae but I'll work my way up to that if I have success with this one.

Any tips on growing this beauty? Like do phrags like to be more pot bound or medium choices? Or should I just grow it like most of my paphs and just water it slightly more often? :)

Incidently, I've been inspired by the thread http://www.orchidboard.com/community...id-ebay-7.html so I want to start this thread to discuss about it.
A few days ago, I've come across an orchid while searching for a red phrag and I found this:
Orchid Web: Phrag. besseae 'Robs Choice' AM/AOS 4N
and as you slipper fan know, this clone is well known to produce bright red flower.
here's the link from other forum:
The King of besseae. 'Rob's Choice' - Slippertalk Orchid Forum- The best slipper orchid forum for paph, phrag and other lady slipper orchid discussion!
The offspring of besseae 'Rob's Choice' AM/AOS - Slippertalk Orchid Forum- The best slipper orchid forum for paph, phrag and other lady slipper orchid discussion!
I think it looks gorgeous and I'd like to have a division of that. However it is way over my budget
Feel free to give any opinion and discussion about it. Please don't bash Orchid Limited if you disagree with the price. I've been a customer of OL and I give OL lots of respect.

(Socerer's Apprentice 4N X Grande 4N X Gigantea) growing in my basement, in S/H, with 400W HID light.

Feb 2004, I asked Lynn Housermann to find me a really nice phrag. She asked Tom, and this is what he picked. Good choice.

It is so tall that I can't stake it up enough. It has 2 stakes in it now but it just goes where IT wants to go.

The first pic is what it looks like now - 8th and 9th flower, still more buds to come. The second pic is what it looked like about 2 months ago. It was just starting to out grow the 2 stakes and start to lean over.

I love phrags but I sure wish they didn't get so large........ and so tall. Some are a lot smaller but the long petal ones, which I like, always seem to be soooo tall.

:hello
I'm finally back to the Board after working hard over the past 2 months to get my new collection of Phrags - Species and hybrids I bought from Hooser Orchids comfortable in my basement greenhouse. I'm a Fan of both Phaps and Phrags but I see there are no Phrag Forums. Is there enough interest interest in Phrags to setup a separate Forum to discuss thier care and other special needs? I have a list of the Phrag plant names along with some photos to post. William, the owner of Hooser listed that there may be some of his collection plants that may be rare and should be handled with care. Therefore, wish to increase my knowledge of this type of Orchid so I can keep my collection healthy and help others.
Thank you

This is a first time bloom on a single growth seedling. Hopefully next blooming will see the dalessandroi branching of the flower spike come through. But right now, I am just in love with the 'windows' in the pouch!! What a cool thing!

Hi everyone, I am new to the Orchid Board and I have a question for s/h orchid growers out there. I have a seedling Phrag Hanne Popow that has been in s/h for about 2 months. It's large enough that's it's bloomed already, but still pretty small. Anyway, lately the plant has been looking fairly yellow. The roots are all healthy looking and it is starting a new root and a new small new growth. One lower leaf is fairly yellow but does not appear ready to fall off, the rest of the plant also has a yellow tinge. Does not appear to have crown rot. Does anyone know what would cause this? I was thinking water quality and have been using distilled water lately but I can't tell if it's helping since the plant is still yellowish. I used neem oil on the plant when I first got it, as I do with all new additions, and have never had problems before. It sits next to phalaenopsis and paphiopedilum which do not have yellow leaves, so I'm thinking it couldn't be getting too much sunlight. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks!

Hello everyboy!

I recently recieved a seedling of a Paphiopedilum Mattakesset from a freind and was looking for a little information on it. Does anybody have any ideas as to the eventual size of the plant? Flower color? growing conditions?

I know its a primary of lowii and glanduliferum so I am assuming warm temperatures and high light but I may be mistaken. I am pretty sure its not going to be compact, the seedling is two years old and already ten inches wide. If anybody has this cross or one of the parents maybe they can give some advice on what this plant may possibly want. Any pictures?

Thank you.

So would you be so kind to consider this message and respond. :D

The seccond is Paph. gratrixianum, which is the first successful bloom I've been able to produce on any of my plants in this genra. :) I've had others bloom, but they were in spike when I received them.
