I got one from Hawaii 3 weeks ago along with 2 different clones of Gram....Help, I need to know what I am doing wrong with this species plant. I got one from Hawaii 3 weeks ago along with 2 different clones of Gram. Scriptum. The Elegans new growth rotted off and the growth/bulb next to it has its leaves all turning yellow. I got another plant from the same dealer and since it was out growing its pot I moved it into another 12" pot big enough for 2 more years growth . I noticed today that the tip of one of its leaves is yellowing.
I grow in a greenhouse with 65% humidity. I have the plants in a area wher they get max. light with day time temps of 90F and night temps of 55F.
I water 3 times a week normally overhead, but have the plant where it will not get soaked. It gets a light mist from my fogger when its on.
The Gram Scriptums are in smaller pots and get soaked when they are watered and they are happy. Should I treat the Elegans the same. Should I try growing it in a smaller pot.
The grower in Hawaii grew it in a potting soil with a little bark. I was afraid in my climate of root rot so I repotted it into a med. bark/perilite/characoal mix.
Should I allow it to get soaked when it is watered eventhough its in a huge pot with good drainage.

I have been told everything from little or no water to regular water once a week. It has more natural light this Winter than last and seems well but I have alot of this Summer's new growth trying to die off? I have never had this plant bloom "so far" and hope to pull it off this Spring. All help appreciated.

I apologize to be such a clueless newbie, but clearly you guys really know what you're talking about and I'd appreciate your input...
My grandmother has grown cymbidium orchids for longer than I've been alive, however, recently the orchid houses in the backyard had to be torn down and she's no longer able to care for them.
She got rid of most of them and only about 20 were kept in black plastic pots under a large shady tree in the yard since then.
Last week my grandma gave me one to take to my new apartment, since it's the first with my own outdoor space to keep plants.
It was in pretty sad shape and I'm not even sure it's still alive?
Since it was kept under a tree, the pot was full of dead tree leaves and the pot was also cracked so I hastily re-potted the plant, which I realize now may have been a mistake.
After taking out all of the dead materials from the pot, the plant itself was fairly loose and came out pretty easily. It looks like it might be 2 separate plants, but since they were in one pot before I repotted them together in one pot.
The orchid had a lot of built up dead leaves and nubs I'll call them, I don't know what they actually are, but if it didn't easily pull off I left it alone in case they weren't actually dead.
I used an orchid potting mix (Miracle Grow I think?) and have been watering it, what I think, is thoroughly every other day or so. I noticed the pot had "rolly pollies" and itty bitty black spiders in it as well as some slugs, are these guys bad or should I let them be?
Again, I apologize for really knowing nothing about taking care of orchids other than watching my grandma as a child. I don't know proper terms either, so hopefully this has made sense and if not here are some pictures of my plant.

Full picture, taken before I did some additional tidying up. The close-ups were taken today. As you can see, some of the longer leaves have cracked and are bent in half. There's also some black spots here and there, and some of the leaves tips were black which I cut off.
I would appreciate any advice in caring for my new orchid as I'd like to be able to restore the rest of my grandma's orchids so she can have some flowers again :) Thanks in advance!

I got a couple of species ( Hookerium & Allofollium ) this past summer and have noticed that some of the leaves are yellowing and falling off. When I got the plants they were potted so I transplanted them into my regular cymbidium mix . I have not been over watering or underwatering. I have them with my other hybird and species cumbidiums. I have not had any new growths on either of these plants. Any suggestions.

They all became black and I therefore removed the now dead material. I am wondering why this should happen and what can be done to have some flowering success.

So now there is a single spike growing, already a few inches high. Could be better, considering that the plant probably has 20+ growths. The cym is still outdoors for now, enjoying the sun, but at what point should I bring it in? Lately the night temps are in the low 50s. And what temperature does it need indoors to ensure the spike doesn’t blast? Basically, I just need to know what to do with the plant from this point onwards. And finally, how long does it take (on average) to bloom from the moment the spike appears?

It is also home to several endemic orchid species such as Dendrobium torajaense, Phalaenopsis celebensis, Bulbophyllum echinolabium, Vanda celebica to name a few.
Although Grammatophyllum scriptum has a wide distribution from Borneo, Philippines, to Papua New Guinea, it is worth noting that Sulawesi subspecies has a distinct feature. Flowers are not densely placed along the inflorescence and the spots are large and brown on olive background. Bulbs can grow as big as a soft drink bottle with aerial roots forming like bird nest. A hot growing orchid which prefers good air circulation especially with the aerial roots and grown under full sun.
The specimen plant. As comparison, a miniature Grammatophyllum is also blooming with a much smaller plant and lesser flower count.

Can anyone reccomend a good cymbidium book to buy that would cover species as well the hybirds.

We now have a plant...We have been growing about 10 cymbidium plants for about the past 8 years and have never had a problem with rotting new growths. We now have a plant that has rotting new growths. Just pulled out the 2nd one tonight and took some pictures. We grow outside in the back yard in California, and treat them with Bayer AllInOne Rose Care to keep the scale under control. We water with the hose.
We got this plant about 5 months ago from the Opportunity Table of plants provided by the speaker at our local Cymbidium group meeting. It's an unbloomed plant of a new cross he made. It had 2 visible new growths at the time, and the speaker told us to repot it when we got home, which we did, into a sterilized pot. We discovered a 3rd new growth during the repotting. It's been growing well for last past few months, but just recently two of the new growths rotted.
From what I've found on the internet, it looks like this rot is caused by a bacterial or fungal infection, and is possibly related to over-watering. Any idea if we should be treating it with some other chemicals, taking it out of the pot and checking the roots, or is just pulling out the rotted growth and hoping for the best all we can do? We really want to bloom this one to see how the flowers turn out.

I've been given a cluster of 5 large, leafless, rootless backbulbs of Cym. Jungfrau 'Dos Pueblos.'
There are small (about 1" long) green growths, also without roots, coming out of two of these.
Soooooo, I've grown and divided cymbidiums, and given away these ripened backbulbs, but have never actually tried growing them myself.
Should I pot up now, or wait for roots? Then, wet or dry, sun or shade, etc.?
After googling this plant, it is certainly a beauty, and I'd surely like to grow it. Well! FWIW, I'm in the deep south, and we are in the midst of a hellish heat wave/drought.

As a student at Idaho State College I worked at an American Rose Society Test Garden in Pocatello Idaho. The purpose was to test the suitability of different roses for that climate. A lot of the work was paid for and sponsored by a man who did it as a hobby. My part of the effort was to shovel Cow manure on the collection. The work was hard but then I have never had any particular allergy to hard work. My reward for the effort was $1.25 Per hour and a real respect for what was being accomplished. Too bad more testing of this type is not done on all plants that could be grown in different climates particularly my favorite, the cymbidium Orchid.
Cymbidiums that will grow and bloom in N.E. Florida is something I have made spent many years of effort and enjoyment to learn. Each year and each plant teaches me something new and the more I want to know about this fascinating species. My cymbidiums have not been inside for six years and that included the past few nights. Success is the result of successfully creating a micro climate for the plants. All except one of two are in fine shape.
A lot of my cymbidiums are too young to determine how well they will do. I also have a lot of plants that are no longer available commercially but have bloomed well for me. Many are not included on the attached list of Cymbidiums which will bloom reliably. I would love to know what anyone in Florida has success with so that I can add it to my list.
Flower initiation is not an exact science. Generally Cymbidiums like a 20 degree F day/night temperature swing with the high being 75 degrees F. in July and August - paticularly true of the large standard species which originated in the Himalayas. Our fall is closer to this temp swing so plants which initiate spikes during the fall are often successful in Florida - but the actual flowering is usually later causing flower spikes to abort in the heat of the early summer. Some plants don’t get the right light temperature combination in our conditions. Finding plants which initiate flower spikes and not abort is what the effort is all about. Cymbidium breeders and serious growers know that during the hybridization process the day night temperature swing requirement often tends to blur due to the variable of different species. The resulting hybrids become more tolerant of climate variables as a result. There are also strange things going on with the genes of these plants which require cold temperature in that the same plants seem to also have a "hot" gene. Some of the variation is due to the range that we find the species. Finding a species collected in a hot area may give us warm growers. Another trick is to get the right combination to turn on the hot gene. As I learn more about all this the more curious I become. The only sure way to know is to
Grow the plant and see for ourselves.

I live in Cocoa Beach, fl & keep all my orchids on a protected northwest corner in my backyard under a big shefflera tree. I would not call myself a serious grower, but I tend to have pretty good luck with my plants. I have phal, oncidium, catt, & several little plants that are hybreds mixed with catt. I water all the orchids once a week , fertilize with a weak water soluable mix about every 4th week. All pots have excellent drainage
I was given these, they came from LA Calif, & they were all clumped up in one pot. I divided them(too aggressivly I think) & they have new growth that has appered in the last few months.
As you can see they are all in different types of pots & I saw the one hase dark brown tips now.
So my question is with the hot Fl summer coming should I move them inside? Should I change watering schedule?
Do they like a specific medium?

Summer temp here in my town is betwwen 95-108 degrees so I was wondering if being in the patio is okay during the summer? If so, how often do I have to water them? Lots of info out there some good and some????? I have several cymbidiums and they are doing good. I really want to plant them into the ground. I have some neighbors who have done this and they look really nice. I am currently using 2 potting mixes: 1 coconut husks in small pieces. 2) horse manure, some rich dirt and rice husks ( to help with drainage). The plants in horse manure look a little happier.
I am looking for any and all input here on growing cymbs in the ground.
BTW I live at 5000 ft so temps 12-18c at night 20-30c in the day.

I purchased this as a "dug-up" seedling from Casa de las Orquideas in fall of '06. I like the heavy spotting on the lip; as an added bonus, the flower is a nice khaki/brick color.

She said it was a miniature Cymbidium. Thinking of something that would fit in a coffee cup, I said OK. So when I saw her, she comes out with this thing in an 8" pot. I said, You said it was a miniature. She said, It is. It has a little bity flower. :-)

The Giant Orchid, Grammatophyllum speciosum, also called Tiger Orchid, Sugar Cane Orchid or Queen of the Orchids, is the world's largest orchid. It is native to New Guinea, Indonesia and Malaysia, growing in crotches of large trees on exposed areas of the lowland tropical rainforest.

eople are saying it is Tha scriptum species.....I really aren't too sure now, as it has the scriptum bulbs, but yet it has the speciosum flowers....Ahh well, i'll just wait for it to grow.

I couldn't help myself, I'm weak, I bought one. I got agrivaine x sylvania 'rose passion'. I'm not 100% sure, but I detect a very light lemony fragrance, oh yeah and its a mini. Will post pictures later.

I'm glad I didn't listen to myself ;)
Picked up this baby - one spike with mostly open blooms - another spike just starting to open - plus 3 (!) more spikes in bud still! $20! couldn't pass that up especially as I have been wanting some dark cyms - mine are all light colors.
It now has 3 spikes blooming with 2 more to go! :D

I have yet to see it. Any guess what it might be or what climate it likes? they say it likes a cooler climate.
Looking for a guru, any Ideas I would appriaciate. Thanks.

Wed, 25 Mar 2009 21:13:54 GMTI just received a new Cym in the mail and it's totally covered with what I believe is scale. :(( Each of the little bumps seems to have two "spots" on one end and some have a "U" shape indent as if something came out of them.
I've tried wiping it down with alcohol but the stuff is VERY hard to wipe off. (Much harder than any scale I've seen before.) Looking at it through a magnifier it looks like it's ruffled-up around the edges a little - but not gone.
Can anyone tell me what this is and what to do about it?

This one is an Indian variety, and the differences between it and the Burmese variety are the Indian's more rounded sepals and petals, and in the shape of the lip. The plants themselves look almost identical to me, and they share the habit of only producing two blooms per stem. But I do think that the fragrance of the Indian plant's blooms are a bit stronger than those of the Burmese variety's. This one's been an easy grower and bloomer so far. My challenge will now be to see how they do in our hot and very humid summers where I live.

I have a Cymbidium (Pink Champagne 'Old Vienna'), which is my first Cym. Anyways, It sent out a new growth in November, and is now about 1.5 inches long. Yesterday, I noticed another 'nubbin' ( :lol: ) on the other side of the newest pseudobulb. From the picture ( Its still VERY small, can anyone tell me if it is a new growth or a flower spike?

When we were setting up for a show earlier this month, the hotel had just pruned their palm trees, and my friend showed us this excellent/beautiful recycling idea - would also work with palmetto fronds. Many hotels around here seem to use these plants as landscaping; I am on alert! Trim and use as supports - they can range up to 3' long, so work excellently for giant cymbidium inflorescences, like this (sweet) Oriental Legend 'Cinnamon' (grown in pure, fresh horse manure), which this year has over 2 dozen inflorescences. The flowers open a dark russet, and mature through almost a chamois color.

I grow my phals in an E/NE window under suplementary lights. Should I put the cymbidiums there or can they go outside? I live near Dallas and it gets REALLY hot here!

I just got back from the nursery and I thought you might like some new flowers to look at. The orange flower is Mighty Sunset 'Floracultura' and the White one is Grand Master 'Flash' The Grand Master 'Flash' is a chance white flower out of a yellow crossing.

It has a lot of madidum genes in its background, hence the long flowering spikes (three feet) of fragrant yellow-green blooms and large plant size. The flowers have a nice fragrance, kind of reminiscent of apricots.

However, it is impossible to follow this procedure with my very large pots of cymbidiums... they are too heavy to move to the sink. What is the best and most effective way to water these huge plants without leaving some areas of the medium untouched by water/fertilizer?

Since I haven't had them very long, I can't really take credit for the flowers (the other plant's buds appeared first; however, they're maturing much slower than the ones pictured here). Wed, 18 Feb 2009 00:38:43 GMTI have a large cymbidium in about a 16" pot - when I repotted it about 3 summers ago, I just moved it to a bigger pot and it bloomed beautifully 2 winters in a row. However this year didnt bloom - It has 9 or 10 fat green p/bulbs and many dried ones. I can see about 3 spots that I could divide it - except I always chicken out when I cut things. Dare I divide it into 3? What kind of medium should I use? How many of the old dried up bulbs do I keep? It's almost too big to handle at the moment. so will have to wait until the weather warms up - March or April maybe. Any advice appreciated!

Sat, 31 Jan 2009 16:07:00 GMTThis morning I went shopping to buy some food for the weekend. Just as I'm about to leave the store, I spot a shipment of Cymbidiums being rolled in. I think you guys know what happened! :)
So I brought home this gorgeous light yellow Cym for only 4€. When I got home and inspected it, I noticed a little dirty tag buried in the medium, left there by the grower. So my Cym is no longer a NOID. It's Cymbidium Paddy.
I'm going to have to repot it, the roots are starting to explode the pot!

I have a standard Cymbidium ( Pink Champagne 'Old Vienna'), and I haven noticed that the leaves, starting at the base of the pseudobulb have started turning yellow. Not dying leave yellow as if they were going to fall off soon. I have it it a south-facing window, and on the windowsill right it front of the glass. Could it be a bit too cold, too much light, or not enough fertilizer? Any information would be appreciated ,as this is my first Cymbidium ( I have had it since last May).

She had gone to our local Costco during lunch and said she just could not resist it. I do not have any Cymbidium orchids so that was an added bonus. I've this Cymbidium blooming now, i purchased it as a Cymbidium goeringii, but i'm in doubt about it....
C. goeringii has only one flower for stem, mine has 3 flowers... and the plant is quite large for a goeringii, it's about 50 cm tall..
I think it could be a C. goeringii var. longibracteatum, or a Cymbidium x nishiuchianum, a natural cross between goeringii and kanran...
What do you think about? :)

Tue, 13 Jan 2009 05:46:51 GMTI bought this orchid about a year ago, on sale as the flowers were mostly finished, and think it was a greenish color. I didn't really expect much, since the last cymb. I had, I killed. But yesterday, when I was watering it, I took a close look at the new growth, and what do you know, I got a flower spike... Wohoo!!! So now I'm curious about the spike process on these, right now it reminds me of a hyacinth flower as it first emerges, total length is maybe 4 inches. I'm assuming it will gain height as the flowers get closer to opening? I generally grow phal and similar easy to grow temperate varieties, so this is a new experience for me, and any info on the care of this would be appreciated.
I did have it outside on my front porch all summer (west facing, so late afternoon sunshine), and left it out until the first good frost, cause I knew it liked to get cold before it would flower again. Any thing else I should know?

This is the first time I ask a question on this forum but I grow orchids from a dozen years.
So my question as suggested by the title of my post concerns Cyrtopodium punctatum.
I bought one in November 2008. The plant is adult 4 pseudobulbs. The growth of the year is finally maturing as the leaves began to turn yellow. In addition to this date there are only 2 leaves that will soon fall. The plant is in a mixture of pine bark in a clay pot.
It is in my greenhouse (temp. ° C 15/22 - 59/72 ° F) at this time.
Since the Cyrtopodium returned dormant let the substrate dry.
And surprise yesterday, the plant starts growing. It is 0.033 Ft (1 cm).
What should I do? I thought that the plant would remain longer at rest.
Should I resume watering or should I wait?
I love this plant so that I can not make mistakes.

They're healthy and seem to be thriving as far as I can tell.
Does anyone have any suggestions that would help these them bloom.
I've found that begging doesn't seem to help with them..

I left it in the greenhouse all summer and it never got temperatures below 55 degrees. I thought for sure it wouldn't flower this year, but I guess I was wrong. These flowers just started opening a week or so before Christmas. The only thing is, there is only one spike this year. Anyone have any thoughts on how I can get more spikes next year? It is a pretty mature plant - aprox 20 pseudobulbs total. The thing is, I don't know exactly what kind of cymbidium it is, so I don't know specifically what care it needs!:scratchhead:

Got this for my dad for Christmas (in bud, no idea what the flowers would look like other than "not round like other cymbidiums" - the buds were dark purple and elongated, coming to a point at the end) so it's been sitting in my room for a few days. Just started opening last night and I love this plant! nice dusty pink colour and nice smell to it - sort of like a rose.
Second flower on the first of three spikes will be opening tomorrow.

I really want one of these, and having found a blooming size plant online for a reasonable price, I'm very much tempted to make an early Christmas present for myself. That being said, I don't want to kill the plant by subjecting it to an environment where it's not able to withstand very warm summer temperatures (giving it a cool and bright winter environment will not be a problem). Can anyone who's had firsthand experience with this species offer some advice, please? Thank you.

Yesterday I purchased 2 cymbidiums. I was in a rush and was just happy to find them. When I got them home I realized they had dark brown/ black spots on the underneath of some leaves. The white with pink cymbidium also looked like it was going to drop all its unopened buds (it just dropped one) but it has the fewest spots. Then I also noticed a white fluffy cocoon like object also on the underneath of a leaf. Could anyone please tell me how I handle this?

They are not stringy, they are actually wider than the the ones on the new plant but are about 4' from the dirt to the tip. The pseudobulbs are not big but have been getting consistently bigger. Is it a bad thing that the leaves grow that long?

I have a beautiful cymbidium whose flowers are dropping off, just 3 so far. It has been flowering for ages so I understand that.
However, I've just noticed the white stuff that looks like fungus on the roots.
What do I do? Soak and repot? Dry out and repot? There are so many different threads on cymbidiums, I can't work out what do to.

I didn't realise how long it took for a spike to form and open, this has been six weeks to get to this stage.
