Hey, everyone. I'm considering adding Coelogynes to my collection, but I'm not sure what species would do well in my area. I'm looking for warm-growing species or species that are able to withstand a high range of temperatures. The summers here are hot and humid, and the fall/winter temperatures can drop quite a bit (down to the lower 50's at night or even down to the upper 40's, depending on what the weather is like). I would think that the cool-growing species would thrive during the winter months but languish in the heat of spring and summer. Then again, I have no experience with this genus, so I'm not sure what to expect.

Any suggestions? :)

What is this plant?? I bought it like a year ago as Panisea (Coelogyne) uniflora, but now that it is open I don't think that is what I got! Any ideas? I don't know this genus too well so my only guess is fimbriata, but I really have no clue. Thanks for any hints!

Hi everyone,
i hope someone can give me some advice here!

Due to a very hot summer and me going away for a month, my Coel. cristata hasn't gotten enough water over the summer (my mother came to give them a good bath once a week). When i got back, i went back to my normal watering routine and 3 weeks later, I noticed new growth on it, while it had already sprouted 14 new bulbs 3 months earlier! I'm afraid I'd given it a bit too much... Normally the plant blooms in the beginning of february, but I'm afraid I can forget about that now! :( :think2: Am I right..? Should I just keep treating it like during it's normal growing period? i'm so used to my plants yearly routine that I'm not sure what to do now :p

After looking at Richards backbulb website, I had another senior moment -- I have a backbulb of Coelogyne South Carolina !! (somewhere)

 My Coel....

After looking at Richards backbulb website, I had another senior moment -- I have a backbulb of Coelogyne South Carolina !! (somewhere)

My Coel. South Carolina (Coel. Burfordiense (asperata x pandurata (1911)) x Coel. pandurata, C. & H. 9/5/1996) backbulbs were from Rob in 08/08. Two backbulbs he set in lava rock in a 4" round plastic pot. In 11/08 the smallest new growth appeared. The second, larger growth started this spring and is stretching the limits of the pot. And now I see another growth (above finger in 2nd photo). There are also numerous roots coming through the slots in bottom of pot. I have not been able to flower this plant.

I need help with this guy -- questions:

Is plant still too small to flower ?

Where does this plant flower from ??

Is the latest growth a potential flower source ??

My big problem is wether to repot or not at this time ??? The plant needs a larger pot, especially if that new growth needs to expand to the size of the large pseudobulbs.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

This one's a miniature Dendrochilum. The plant is mounted on a 4"x4" block of tree fern, and has doubled in size over the past year. It produced 10 bloom spikes this time around. Individual flowers are tiny, but they sure do look amazing through a macro lens. Incidentally, they don't seem to have the typical pungent, tangy Dendrochilum smell - yet, anyway.
Mostly it is full of this kind - I'm presuming it is fimbriata, but can anyone confirm that? I don't see the hairy lip some talk about (click for a larger pic in my gallery). Also the leaves seem different to others in my garden I thought were fimbriata.
The other type is asperata I think. Very beautiful.
I got this one a while back and it grows soooo slowly, even for an orchid. I think this species and Rhyncolaelia digbyana are best friends! Anyway, very unusual looking flower with very pendulus bloom, therefore pretty tough to take pictures of. Enjoy!

P.S. There is no scent that I can detect.

I guess I'm fortunate enough to bloom this lovely orchid in lowland tropics whereas this species is usually found in highland tropical forest. Seems like plenty of rain and drop of temperature lately helped stimulating bloom. This species is native of Java. Lots of variants can be found but this one has light brown labellum color. Several new bulbs are developing and each will give out new bloom in several weeks time.

Hi, Im trying to make a Coelogyne Bufordiense flower in deepest darkest Scotland. I was very excited to get a flower spike (I think) about 2 months ago but it doesnt appear to have grown at all since then.

If Im being very honest its not particularly healthy looking after two years of neglect but recently ive been experimenting with growing it under lights and have had an orchid case made to my best guess which is sitting in my living room.

Its getting about 15 hours a day of two 25w t5 HO florescent tubes (3500K and 6500K) through a layer of glass, humidity is between 65 and 72 degrees and the temperature reaches a maximum of 20 degrees in the evening. I had a tiny fan from habistat but it didnt really do anything but dry out the air.

Do I need to concentrate more on getting the temperature down or the humidity up? Should I get another tube with a higher K? Will the plant suffer from the reduced UV through the layer of glass? Is tapwater ok to water it with?
I feel like Im nailing jelly to a wall so if anyone has experience of growing one of these I would really appreciate any advice.

I always manage to leave an orchid show with one folly, and this year it's a Pleione, bought with no cultural knowledge, just the admiration of a plant in the exhibition room. The vendor (rushed as they always are) handed me a culture sheet, but for an entirely different plant. So, I've been researching books and internet. The specimen I bought is labelled P. wallichiana. It seems that this name is no longer correct, and should be Pleione praecox. If that is the case, I have a fall bloomer that needs slightly warmer conditions. However, the largest new growth shows evidence between the leaves of a bloom stem that has been cut. So I'm (its) confused.:hmm Is it safest to provide cool/alpine temps (the basement refrigerator for it's rest) or the warmer temps (not sure where this will be yet)? Any advise would be appreciated!

I have just recieved a Coelogyne masssangeana and it it is not in the best way, the roots are dry and beige but when soaked they were firm just didnt green up, It is a 5 pseudobulb division. I have removed all the brown sheaths around the pseudobulbs and potted up into bark. I cant find much info on how to grow this guy such as temp, watering, light etc but I have read it can sulk for 2-3 years when divided and repotted :( the pseudobulbs are slightly shrivelled as it came from spain bare root with no moss around the roots to keep it moist, I am rather annoyed about it but the aim now is to get this guy well again, the leaves are nice and green though slightly wrinkled due to (I am guessing ) dehydration. What can I do for this plant to get him healthy again and get some new roots growing I think I am going to have to be very very patient for flowers but for now i just want him to survive. Thank you in advance.

Thought I'd post some photos here of my spiking nitida. I was really confused about this plant a year or so ago because I didn't know whether what I was seeing was new growth, or spikes. So here's a comparison...can't wait till this one opens. It's super cute.

[EDIT-forgot to label the photos!]
The left photo shows the spike emerging in between the unfurling leaves. The right photo shows a growth with no spike...the leaves unfurl and the middle is hollow.

Also, I discovered that the dried up things which I thought were dead growths (I ended up ripping one off last month) are actually spikes on my coel. cristata and they are emerging! I am SO EXCITED
Here is a closeup of the buds:

Really tiny Dendrochilum. I just love these things. The chains of flowers are fascinatingly detailed when you get right up close. This one is in a 4" net pot in sphagnum moss. It has two inflorescences with six new growths starting, meaning six more blooming shoots, but I couldn't wait that long to take the pic.

Flowers start off green, then mature to a bright yellow. Kind of a strange tangy smell, very pungent. Not bad, just... different. Here's a good Dendrdochilum for you, Yvan. See? They're not all huge.

My Mother gave me a present whilst I was visiting her..
It's a Coelogyne...? not sure what? She told me it's a 'densiflora' - I think it's more like a "Coelogyne pulverola" or "pulverula" from pictures I've seen on the web....
Here are a couple of pictures of the plant she divided, which luckily for me was in flower whilst I was over there, unfortunately the close up is blurred..
I would also be grateful for any info on it's culture.I haven't really found any 'real' info on it..she grows it outside planted in a mixture of sand & charcoal.

Any info would be very appreciated. My mum tells me it's a 'tough' & very hardy plant.

I have a Dendrochilum ecallosum and it has never grown a bit since i bought it over year ago. Now it is slowly loosing all it's leaves (only 4 left) on about 20 bulbs. It is blooming size and I just repotted to make sure nothing was rotting and all I noticed was that the media was really dry. What is the best way to take care of this plant.. does it need a rest period? I can't find any info on this plant. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
