This is definitely totally off-topic, but I was hoping people could give me some suggestions on a clematis to grow.
I want to allow it to climb through a star magnolia, which is about 12 feet tall (though it has begun to produce more upright growth recently) so the clematis shouldn't get more than 15, maybe 20 feet tall. The site stays moist even in our dry summers, and it gets sun until perhaps 11 a.m. then it gets varying degrees of filtered to full shade the rest of the day, so not a lot of sun. However, the magnolia blooms and grows wonderfully every year, so there's plenty of sun for it, at least.
Now, here's the tricky part. While I am looking for something to add a second season of interest to the magnolia, meaning a summer or fall bloomer, I am also interested in fall foliage color. Since everyone focuses on clematis blooms, it's hard to find information online about foliage color. One of my horticulture professors recently showed me a picture of Clematis tangutica with beautiful burgundy fall foliage. Since the magnolia turns yellow in fall, this would be a good contrast, but I wanted to hear some other options too.
Of course suggestions of other vines are welcome, too. Keep in mind that winters here usually see several days of temperatures in the high teens (lowest I've ever seen was 16 or 17 degrees F) and our summers are dry (though the site in question is moist to wet year-round).

The next photo is a huge bloom/pitcher thing... a variety of Nepenthes I think. It's bigger than my outstretched hand and my friend plucked it off the dense vine it was growing on and gave it to me. I just found out on google that plants of this cross may all be virused, either with Cucumber Mosaic Virus or Passiflora Latent Virus. It doesn't affect the plant too much so it remains in cultivation. Don't know if mine is affected, but i'll have to be careful. Remakes of the cross were done that are virus free.

I lost some of my orchid records, the new ones which I had not backed up yet. I can't believe how much 'stuff' I had to transfer from CDs to my new hard drive. Some of it could be saved from my old computer but not all of it.:(( When I finish I will post some pictures which I saved on disks.

I did well with it, so now I have an assortment of tillandsias on order. I am wondering what is the best way to fasten them to a string?
I don't want to strangle them, impale them, or have them fall off. All of the online directions talk about mounting them on wood and cork and such, but I just want them mounted on a string, preferably facing up. I guess it would be OK if they were mounted on something tiny, as long as I could still hang them, take them down easily for soaking, and give them 360 degree air circulation.

A few plants from inside
Agave victoriae reginae -- about the size of a soccerball. Rather liked it myself. Was surprised at how hard the leaves were
I was way too short to get close pics from above for the flowers on this cactus -- the lowest flowering branches were 8 or 9 ft (2.5 to 3 m) off the ground
however I did get a good shot of this one's flowers (that the plant was only 6-8 inches tall helped :D)
Madagascar palm -- definitely NOT a "climb friendly" -- and its flowers
Now the few orchids that were in bloom -- none of which had name tags :(

Two photos of success in the garden this summer.
The first is a "tower" of Gloriosa Rothchildiana doing wonderfully by my back door.
The other photo is of a wild grape I discovered growing as a weed in the garden,but this one is variegated.
I dug it up and potted it.
I'll keep it if the variagation is stable.

There were 8 or more of these stall tents you see in the background. The fair/show/competition lasts for about a month during which time this site hosts about 1,500 horses.
Those familar with such events will undoubtably figure "well yeah, so?" but I thought this was neat -- before competitions commense, each rink/course(?) has one of these trucks that go about wetting down the dirt. Kind of the equestrian version of the zamboni. :D

]]>In the mean time I'll share my latest bug pic. This dragonfly was perched on a Dendrobium on my back porch. I took his photo and then captured him and released him outside the screened enclosure. Dragonflies frequently visit this area but they have a difficult time finding their own way out. They frantically fly about and beat themselves up in the process. I assist these beautiful "mosquito eaters" so they don't perish.
This is last year's visit... I am assuming this is the same species.

]]>Perhaps it's the beginning of a nest. If the bee/wasp is building a nest he's chosen the wrong type of plant to be messing with. If he gets curious about those pitchers he'll become plant food.
My other thought is that it is some sort of snail and the bee/wasp entered and fed on it's contents.
I've seen a lot of bugs and bug homes but I really have no idea what this is. The lumpy bumpy thing looks nothing like a typical snail shell and there is no damage to the leaf.:dunno:
I was unaware the thing was occupied when I took the first two photos. In the last pic. the bug was gone and the thing was empty.
Any ex-smokers out there who kicked this awful addiction? I'd love to hear how quitting went for you, how long it took to feel normal again and if you had any help. I'm starting the patch tomorrow, have been using the Nicoret gum which is helping....but maybe the patch is better? If I could only sleep for about 2 weeks straight and then wake up a non smoker....ahhh, that's it!:biggrin: ]]>

In the second photo I had advanced about 9' towards the little bugger as he got dangerously near my Dendrobium.
:evil:That squirrel just doesn't know how close he came to being tonight's dinner.
In photo #3 I walked even closer and my dinner...I mean the squirrel, scurried around the corner of the fence, picked a hibiscus leaf, and ate it. Well, he didn't eat all of it. He just nibbled a few bites and tossed the rest.
In the last photo, the "fuzzy tailed" beast came back around the corner to get a better look at me. I must have been lookin' pretty rough because he took one look:yikes:, ran like hell, and disappeared into the neighbors clustered palms. I didn't see him for the rest of the day.:biggrin:

My pitcher plant was purchased about a year ago and rapidly developed into a large sprawling specimen. Finally it just became too large. Attachment 34046 Before trimming back the excess growth I did some research on starting plantlets from Nepenthes cuttings.
I took 9 cuttings in all. Each cutting had a minimum of 3 leaves/nodes and each leaf was cut in half. The cut end of the stem was then coated with a small amount of rooting hormone and placed in a small flower pot of damp sphagnum moss.
According to the instructions the potted cuttings are then to be placed in a sealed plastic bags and kept in their humid enviroment for 4 to 6 weeks. This is where I made some changes. I didn't like the plastic bag idea...too many bags...too little room, so I made a mini greenhouse out of an ordinary plastic storage crate, a clear plastic zippered comforter bag, and a up side down shallow lid from a cardboard box. The box lid was used to line the large holes in the base of the crate so the flower pots wouldn't fall through. The potted cuttings were then placed on top of the box lid and then the whole crate was slid into the square shaped zippered bag.
All the components fit like a glove and I was amazed that everything went

Me and my dog found a baby bunny in the driveway. It's really tiny, the size of a gerbil. It didn't try to run when first the dog then myself approached it. I pushed it into a box and brought it in the garage as we were getting hit by another thunder storm.
Can anyone here tell me how to take care of it. I want to let it go, once I'm sure it can fend for itself. Any help would be appreciated.

It is easy to see how it got its name, the crystalline material accumulates as the leaf matures as you can see in closeup photo.
5 years in water culture in large vases. Solution ~100ppm Nitrogen, changed at least once a week and topped up with tapwater as needed to keep roots submerged at all times. Grows like a weed. Also likes S/H. I gave more than a dozen away already. I grew it in various other media for 10 years before and it barely survived the Winters with central heating in any of them.

First a mammalaria (probably microcarpa, but there are some similar species around here). Bloom is about 1/2 inch across.
Then a Fish-hook Barrel (Ferocactus Wislizeni). Next to it's big brother (about 4 feet tall), then just the bloom. Blooms are about 2 1/2 inches across.
These are all "rescued" cacti from when I extended my back yard wall. I also have other "rescues" in the yard from various construction sites around the area.

The tree was about 3 feet tall when we planted it six years ago, and is now about 8 feet high and 12-15 feet wide. Overdue for some pruning. I’d say. Our yard is pretty well xeriscaped, and gets little supplemental water, but this guy is very thirsty, especially when setting and bearing fruit.
The figs are “Kadota” and are a pale yellow-green when ripe, unlike the brownish-purple figs (“Mission”) mostly seen in grocery and produce stores. Lots of fig pies and cobblers coming up, as well as eating them fresh. My wife has also discovered other ways to use them in sauces, appetizers and deserts.
The figs are large, from 3 to 3 ½ inches across, and unbelievably sweet when fully ripe.

• Another NOID Trichocereus hybrid – blooms also about 5-6 inches across.
Some of these cactus blooms are as spectacular as orchids, but unfortunately, they mostly last only a day, sometimes 2 or 3, but never longer. Many of them do bloom sequentially, like Hemerocallis/Daylilies, but the total bloom period is never more than a week or two at best.
At least they thrive in this climate on pretty much NO care. I just have to enjoy them the few times during the year when they are blooming. The rest of the year it’s orchids . . . much better really!

]]>I've lived in Central Florida a long time but this my first experience growing orange trees. They were both mature fruit producing trees and were between 10 to 12 feet tall when I moved to my current location about 4 years ago. They were doing great until this year so I think the problems are due to our unusually harsh 2008/2009winter temps. My daughter has a tangerine tree that is behaving the same way.
Is anyone else in my vicinity having the same problems and if so is there anything besides watering and fertilizing that can be done to encourage growth. I'm not worried about the lack of fruit for now. I'll worry about that if they fail to bloom next spring. It's the general health of the trees that concerns me. There are no signs of fungal attacks or insect infestations but they just don't seem to be growing. I fear loosing them if there's no new growth before winter dormancy.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

]]>About 18 months ago I purchased a cork pole with 2 Ascocentrum plants mounted on it. She told me it originally had 3 plants but one of them died so I got it cheap. I finally decided to mount another one where the third one had been. What a lesson in patience. After about 2 hours of trying to place fish line around it, when it wouldn't stand up, I gave up. :(( Last night I took it to my son (he was born with a fish pole in his hands) and together we tied it on. 4 hands were a lot better than 2. I held the pole in an upright position, and the new plant in place, so he was free to work with the fish line. He had it finished in 10 minutes. He said I was trying to use a too light weight fish line, but even if I had used the correct line, I would still have been all thumbs.
My hat goes off to you and your talent for mounting plants with that horribly ornery fish line. :bowing:bowing:bowing:bowing
