I was at our monthly orchid meeting and heard Ray with First Ray's Orchids speak about semi hydroponic. He's a dynamite speaker and so easy to talk to. He made me want to switch over. I have an ochid store so most of my customers will go alog with the semi hydroponic program. So, now I will just be able to do my private collection semi hydroponically.

After 1-1/2 to 2 years, I finally lost my first orchid. It seemed to just dry up and die. I went to unpot it to look at the roots, and hundreds of tiny, fast moving little buggers went scurrying in all directions. After destroying them, I poured a cup of Safer's soap & water on all the plants on that shelf,save some compots.

Yesterday I unpotted a dead orchid, to see if the roots were the problem. Upon taking it out of the pot, hundreds of tiny, fast moving critters scattered in all directions from the bark mix.(1) What are they? (2) I immediately made a mix of Safer's soap and water and soaked all the plants on that shelf,(except some compots).Should I do the same for all the plants in that area?

I just realised that lately I almost never bought an orchid in bloom... there was that Valpota's night the other day (but it was bloom ending) and then...last february when I bought a "baggie" pink chinese cymbidium. In between, I had other orchids...of course...but not blooming ones.

I wanted so badly that beautiful Laelia..."Laelia tenebrosa Valpota's night"! After searching for it for a certain time, I found one and ordered for it in a german nursery..I reveived it in bloom : an absolute beauty! Still, the medium was awfull : very old and compact and surrounded by seaweed at a point when it would suffocate it.

Well, I haven't bought a new orchid yet. I really want to get the bathroom completed before I do so that I'll have a place where I know it will thrive - but I'm almost finished with stripping the beadboard, so it's moving along at a pretty good clip. In the mean time, I've become an information sponge. Now is a good time to educate myself.

Why is it that when an orchid dies it's so much harder to take than when a . . . prayer plant dies. . .or a violet. . .or some other type of 'house' plant? I have no idea. **deep breath** Oh well. . . try again. I think orchids present a special kind of challenge - like owning a pet or something. Did I do this right? Did I do that right? Will it survive a year? OMG!! Look at that!!

Nearly had a fatality today. I put the phal I have up stairs in my office to keep it away from the fumes from stripping the beadboard in the bathroom. I placed her in front of a west window thinking that since there is a huge tree blocking the sun, for the most part, my phal would get filtered light and be fine. * Wrong. *

We went to the book store because I wanted to find some books on Orchids. They didn't have much. I already had Orchid Growing for Wimps - a VERY basic basic book on orchid growing. I read it when I bought it - and wow... you don't know the information you missing until you find the information you're missing. It's an ok beginner's book, but just ok.

Lowes got new orchids in today. There were two that were just absolutely beautiful, healthy looking, and the color was just wonderful. And I left them alone. It took everything I had to keep from bringing them home, but I left them alone.

My history with orchids hasn't been the best - though receiving my first orchid when Joe died was a breathtaking awe that came out at such a horrific time. I so wish I had known at that time how to take care of an orchid - and had been emotionally able to take care of anything. (Good thing I didn't have a dog!)

does anyone know why a vandas roots would die at that bottom and the new groth would start around the top mid section, should i now cut the bottom part? its completely dry, but the top (new groth) roots are very think and strong i'm very confused

I have inherited a Keowee 'Newberry' orchid and I know nothing about growing orchids. It is in a wooden frame that is about 15" by 15" and it is 'full' of roots and leaves...no flowers at this time. Is it doable for me to grow this orchid or is it so touchy that I should get rid of it? What kind of care does it need ?

I have about 20 cattleya orchids in my house and I haven't successfully grow them. After few weeks since I bought them, they start to die or the flower bud starts to turn yellow and eventually fall off. April 24, 2009 I received this Dend. Oriental Smile 'Fantasy' AD/AOS It came with this keiki. It also has these two small growths.

I recently acquired several mini-flasks of brassavola nodosa, b. digbyana, schom undulata var flava, c. violacea, and ctsm piletum. All of the seedlings are about to pop out of the mini flasks and I think I need to pot them. I would appreciate any advice as to what kind of medium is best to pot them in.

The genus Cochleanthes is a small group of orchids which they seem like pescatorea because they haven't pseudobulb and the inflorescence is pendulous or erect. About the colture, they want high humidity ,warm-intermiedate temperatures , and the keep the plant moist but not too wet, to avoid rotten roots. i bought a new 2 tac phalaenopsis plant it's in a good condition and is blooming. but i found that one of the leaves hav a serious cut damaged... and another one look like is going to break right from the center (vertical cut)... Using a homemade recipe (OSP1 plus red stick agar) I prepared the media and sterilized the flasks in the oven. I don't have a pressure cooker and it was recommended to me that the oven works also. So far, so good. Four days and no signs of growth in the media. If it still looks good this weekend I will put the flasks in the glove box and try my hand at seeding the flasks.

I live in an apartment condominium in Northern Virginia. When I got interested in orchids I realized I had a desirable true east exposure from the windows. I fortunately also had 6 inch deep window sills. The apartment also has a whole house humidifier that runs at about 40+% humidity full-time during the heating season. Direct downdraft from the heater/air conditioning vents has been diverted so as not to strike the orchids. The few orchids with which I began seemed to thrive. Then one day my wife and I were at the National Capital Orchid Society show and she was captivated by a large, dark blue flower that we discovered was called a Vanda. On further research it seemed these orchids were particularly fussy in their cultural requirements. I read that most are grown bare root in hanging baskets, often outdoors in places like southern Florida. That the roots required frequent watering or misting. That they would not tolerate being too wet, nor too dry but demanded relatively high humidity. The also preferred bright indirect light but preferred only short periods of direct sunlight. These did not seem to be conditions easily met in a relatively small condominium where the growing spaces also doubled as bedrooms. Being at a stage in life where I can afford to experiment, I decided to try to adjust the plants purported fussiness to the realities of my environment. The first thing that had to go was the idea of a hanging basket. It had to grow in a pot and that had to be of modest dimensions. Next it could not require too frequent watering. Orchids are my joy not my masters. I decided it probably would not like usual bark mixtures since they held too much moisture. Being willing to be avant-garde I decided to try EpiWeb imported by First Rays Orchids (Welcome to First Rays Orchids) from Scandinavia. It is a firm foam-like plastic material made from recycled milk containers. It holds no water except what might get trapped in the tiny spaces in the foam. It is available in sheets for mounting but also in 1 inch cubes which was what I used. This material seemed adequate to support the roots and plant but I needed something to retain some moisture to fulfill the criteria of not requiring daily attendance. Again from Rays I decided to add in PrimeAgra which is a Light Expanded Clay Aggregate (LECA) of which there are several similar on the market. This product remains moist after soaking and is often used in semi-hydroponics culture. I mixed this about 3 to 1 of EpiWeb to PrimeAgra. [float=left][/float]hile many people discover their love for orchids when they received their very first phal as a gift, I got hooked to orchids after discovering some of the native beauties of my region. I was lucky enough to do the first two years of horticultural studies in a small college in the alpine town of Chamb�ry. One of my courses involved a series of hikes in the Alps around Chamb�ry to discover the local flora. Hike after hike, I became more and more attracted to these small orchids that survive the harsh alpine winters.

am not an orchid expert by any stretch of the imagination. I can honestly say that I am passionate about growing them, but not an expert by any stretch of the imagination. I am good enough to get someone who is a complete neophyte started, and that is about it. But part of that mad orchid passion involves getting folks started. Let me explain. I have several possibly eccentric behaviors attached to my orchid fascination. The first one is, I love to rescue orchids from the clearance sections of Home Depot, Lowes, and Wal-mart. Perhaps you have seen them there, lonely and pathetic. This stems from a Charley Brown-esque compassion for the underdog plant, (And the fact that I am limited by my pocketbook). There are good and bad facets to this, as I am thrilled when I finally get to see what color the orchid I have bought will be, and have been blessed with spectacular foliage and blooms from these orphans (Only one has never bloomed - a ya). I have also been saddened to be turned away by garden department managers who wouldn't reduce prices on a flat of orchids that are obviously on their way out, and in sore need of nursing. The other behavior is, standing in the orchid section of the store, soaking in the beautiful flowers, and striking up conversations with other folks who wander over to do the same. You can tell the ones who have no luck with orchids, with their furtive vaguely embarrassed but envious glances. I have this thing where I like to encourage and coach those folks through the basics of taking one home and trying again. I live in Central Florida, so this isn

here is a little-known group of orchids, approximately one-hundred species in fifteen or sixteen different genera, that are all miniatures and all worth growing. The best known genus in the group is Ornithocephalus, and the whole group is known as the Ornithocephalinae. Ornithocephalus mean "bird's head," and the group is well-named, since the similarity of the column to a bird's head is striking, while the whole flower often resembles a bird in flight. These miniature species are well-worth growing and produce large numbers of flowers. Many are very attractive plants as well, producing fans of leaves, something on the order of a Tolumnia. These plants come from Mexico and range down into Central America and northern South America, especially Colombia and Ecuador, though they are found as far south as Brazil, Peru and Paraguay. They are most closely related to Maxillaria and with only one or two exceptions are under six inches with many of them much smaller.

mean, of course, "What's in an Orchid name ?" I've noticed in the short time that I've been a member of the Orchid Board the confusion that beginners have with orchid names. The information they find on the tags that come with their orchids is a complete puzzle to them. I can sympathize. I remember the confusion I felt at the totally incomprehensible names and abbreviations I found. I was so confused that I threw away the tags that came with the first orchids I owned, not knowing how important they were. Not only did I consider their plastic ugliness a detraction from the flowers, but the information on them was meaningless to me. Knowing the names of your orchids makes you seem more knowledgeable, but knowing the name can also get you a wealth of information about culture and care. Without a name a plant can't be entered for judging at an orchid show and ordinarily won't be considered for AOS awards - no name, no fame! Without a name no one else can envy you enough to find the orchid you have for themselves. It's in the hope that the following information will help beginners sort out the names of their plants and understand better the importance of these admittedly complicated names that this article is written. Don't throw your tags away; learn to read them.

rchids seem intimidating to grow for most beginners. But take it from this beginner (for the second time) they are easy to grow. The thing you need to watch out for is over/under watering and over fertilizing those are the main killers of plants of any kind. Another consideration is where to grow them. Some grow in windows, some under lights, some on their porches/lanais, some in green houses (if they have the area and money) and some like me a shade house. I have the warm weather here so year round shade house growing is the ticket. Of course even in more temperate climates it will work for late spring to early fall or into winter in south Texas/Florida or where you can maintain a good humidity say 45-55%.
