I have always been a little fascinated by orchids - each June when I was a kid, my grandmother and I would find the lady slippers that grew wild under the pines around the perimeter of her backyard and put a stick with a ribbon in the ground near each one so no one would step on them. I am not sure why it has taken me so long to consider keeping orchids myself, but here I am, having just purchased two young Phals from Carter and Holmes. They arrived Thursday, looking healthy, no spikes - I am hoping they are mature enough to have their first bloom this year... maybe the temp drop from SC to MA will do it. If not, I am patient. :) If I can make these two happy, then more will certainly follow. I have been reading and learning a lot here about the care and keeping of these lovely plants; thank you for creating this community with so much fabulous information.

I've loved our "common" Pink Lady Slippers since I was a kid exploring the woods and swamps where I lived. Scince I was scientifically bent I knew they were orchids even when nobody would believe me.
I'm a long-time gardener but never thought that I could grow orchids up here in the "north-east". My family knew of my love of orchids, though. Whenever we went to visit my husband's brother in Fl. I would immediately buy an orchid for my SIL so that I could enjoy it for the 3
weeks I was there.
This past Mother's Day one of my sons gave me a beautiful white Phal and I put it in a North window (the only window we have that gets ANY decent light). It lasted for months (and I mean months) :biggrin:.
Not to be undone my DH promptly went out and got me another. :rofl:. I added another of my own and (as my husband says) three and you're hooked.
I had had quite a few bad months since I lost my younger sister in a tragic accident, my 98 year old grandfather (who was my best buddy and living with me), and my younger brother all in 9 months. I spent most of this past summer on the couch depressed. ( I did loose 25 pounds, though :) ).
A few weeks ago I noticed there was an orchid show at Tower Hill Botanic Gardens and my DH was more than happy to take me since it was the first thing I wanted to do in months (he likes orchids, too ;) ).
Well, that did it. I got 4 orchids and now only 10 days later and I (we) have a 6'x3'x16" shelf with a 2 bulb 2' T5 light on the middle shelf a 2" fluorescent fixture on order (for the african violets) on the bottom and Paphs and a Phrag. Noirmont 3N on the top (no light). Finally a Lady Slipper I can grow!!!
Bad news, there is another orchid show in RI in 2 more weeks. (I don't have much room left :bua:) I'm sure there's always more room.
I asked my husband if he was upset we were spending so much money and all he asked was "Are you happy" when I said "extremely" he just smiled and said "me, too."
So that's the scoop and I've gotten so much info from the Board on lights, set-ups, and potting that I finally have a break and had some time to join so I could post.
So I guess this is partly you guys fault, too!!!!!
I've even gotten the Cattleya-4 Log since I'm an organizer (it's that scientific background and an anal family) on the info I got from posts here on the board.
I will probably never again post so long a story but I figure this is the first one so I better get it all out.
Thanks again for all the help you've given to an "old" newbie without even knowing it. I owe you my addiction :bowing :biggrin:.

I got started about 2 years ago when my mother was given 2 very overcrowded pots of cattleyas. She did not want them so I said I would give them a try(you cannot throw plants out!). I was very nervous about what to do with them so I just set them outside under a large oak tree untill I learned what to do. Unfortunately they were forgotten for about 1 year, they lived and even bloomed! That is when I learned how tough (some) orchids can be. I got brave after doing some reading and talking to orchid growers and repotted one of them. My collection started growing when I stopped at Orchid World in Orlando, FL. They happened to be going on a 2 week vacation and had lots of great prices on their orchids. I left with 7 orchids! I could not resist $5 & $7 price tags.
I look forward to learning and reading all of your great posts.
I am have gotten the bug to finally tear apart the last large overgrown pot of cattleyas today and am going to post on the beginers forum for some help. Thanks!

I have 50 or so bottles (most with banana added ) which i have added seeds from 6 pods. I used plastic coke bottles (750ml) and slightly smaller juice bottles. I also used some mason jars.

I have been around for some time but haven't had the time to talk with everybody. My favorite orchids are the leafless species. I have some "ghost" and a few other strange species. Chilochista's are also around but I really like the Dendrophylax species! They are alot of fun to "attempt" to grow and once in a while bloom. I have found sometimes it is as easy as it sounds! I have probably killed as many or more than I have kept alive but have taught myself how to replate and a bunch of other stuff that most people will never even think about in a lifetime. Me as a genuine plant nut think us orchid growers are blessed to learn how the planet really works. Someday I hope pass this to the next generation. Mon, 02 Nov 2009 08:17:08 GMTHi, all. I'm a retired U.S. Army NCO, living in Nakhorn Sawan province in Thailand (about 150 miles north of Bangkok). I tried my hand at growing orchids many years ago but had to give it up when I moved to Bangkok.
Back in August a niece-by-marriage gave me a nice plant which I've identified as a Dendrobium, with very attractive yellow-green and purple flowers. Then a couple of other relatives gave me plants, including a couple of Vandas, and my wife picked up a gorgeous Cattleya, with a white and purple flower; I suspect it's a hybrid, but clearly related to the Cattleya family. Now yesterday a nephew-by marriage brought half a dozen more plants from Phitsanulok province, and I decided to look for an orchid board I could turn to for help.
The new plants seem to have been collected from the wild. A couple of them are still attached to tree branches, including one sympodial with about a dozen pseudo-bulbs that I hope to be able to divide and pot. There's another plant, obviously of the same species but with smaller bulbs, which is in a basket along with a small monopodial that I think is a Vanda. Getting them off the branch is going to be a challenge -- the roots are solidly anchored and completely cover the branch, which is about an inch nd a half in diameter and also covered with mold. The others are monopodials; I think vandas, but about four of them are *very* young and two are extremely "leggy" -- they have a stalk over a foot long that all leaves have fallen from. One of those has put out a couple of new aerial roots, but the roots are about a foot away from the leaves.
I'm hoping with care those "leggy" monopodials will put out aerial roots from nodes closer to the existing leaves so I can top them. I'm told they have gorgeous flowers, but I can't see how they could have bloomed recently.
Having some trouble getting my camera to connect to my computer today, so can't yet upload pictures, but I'll be asking for help identifying them when I've got that fixed.:)

I have been growing orchids since I got a cutting from the branch secretary about ten years ago. She had a dendrobium that someone had given her mother, who was trying to drown it - typical problem it seems. She prought it to work as a "rescue" project which she did well. It was blooming for her and growing new stalks but was off center in the pot. One stalk was on top of the rim and a new one was hanging out in the air. She needed to repot it and I said I would help - malice of fore thought. As the day approached I begin to suggest that the one stalk could be cut off to make a new plant since it had several big roots hanging out of it. She agreed and I brought in a razor saw to perform the "surgery" - good thing it was a saw - those stalks are tough! I potted it and took it up to my room, just above hers with a big southern window. I thrived and bloomed for me.
Later she got another dendrobium from her mothers friend, again in sad shape. We nursed it back to health successfully. When I retired I got her to let me have a cutting from it - which is getting ready to bloom again. She also gave two orchids that were not in bloom with the comment, I would have to wait to see what they looked like. After something like five years I finally had blooms on the Buranaglade - see my gallery. The other has grown enough that I was able to give her a cutting, and hers has bloomed. But alas mine has steadfastly refused to bloom.
I got two dendrobiums that were on sale and split them. Gave the cuttings to her and kept the plants but now am not sure which ones they are. :-(
I started to live out in the country after I retired and the lady across the street gave me a phalenopsis that her son's girlfriend, Kitty, had saved after her sister threw it out. The mother, Janet, didn't have room for it so I got it. It is just finishing from having 20 blooms on it. It is my biggest plant, the leaves are something like 12 inches long and three to four wide. It is the pink one on the bottom shelf in my album "My orchids".
Later the girl next door to Janet, Wendy, brought three pots of phalenopsis from her friends in DC since they couldn't get the to bloom. When I repotted them I found two in one pot. Two have bloomed, see gallery - if you can tell what they are I would appreciate knowing.
Well that is enough for a start, more as I have time.

I am so happy I found this site! My hubby and I now have a small family farm raising pastured eggs, chicken, turkey and now pork in upstate NY. So I am home most days and growing my orchids for pure fun.
I don't have many any more. At one time I had over 200--mostly Phals. But I sold them off and gave them away when I had to work full time elsewhere. Now that I'm home again, I'm working on my collection. I love my phals, and am now venturing into some of the other, still beginner orchids. Even tho I have grown them off and on for years I don't feel I have truely mastered the art and am looking forward to learning more.

I'm Janelle and I'm 31 from Victoria, Australia. I have owned some orchids and I currently have 5 of them and I'm not sure how to take care of them properly so that's why I'm here.
I posted another thread in the Beginners Discussion section hoping that someone may be able to tell me what I'm doing wrong and what I should be doing as I have no idea really. All I know is that my 2 dendrobiums I purchased about 3-4 years ago from an orchid show have not flowered since then so something is terribly wrong!!!
I'm looking forward to reading up all about orchids and also discovering some of the different species. They are such a gorgeous flower.:D

I'm an orchid lover who enjoys growing. A neophyte, to be sure, but I do have a little experience.
I'm currently using regular T12 flourescents fixtures, with a cool white and a warm white in each fixture. I'm also using daylight bulbs in some cases. I'm getting ready to purchase a Sun Blaze T5 fixture (2 ft, 4 bulb). Picked that one since it's the only one I can afford.

I was introduced to orchids last year when I went to shop for my mom's gift for mother's day. I bought a really beautiful moth orchid for my mom and since then, been taking care of it. Few days ago, a new spike grew and I was so happy! I thought I did something wrong when I cut the old spikes 1" from the bottom and they turned yellow, dried, and black inside. Well I found this link through Google when researching ways to keep my first ever Orchid alive. It was a gift from my husband for our fourth anniversary and what can I say but I love it!
I have always put off buying one myself, mainly because most people I spoke to about it said that they were especially difficult to keep. So for years I stuck with roses and other such Flora that I was comfortable with. Now though only a couple of weeks on from receiving my first Orchid, a Phalaenopsis, I'm hooked (Already eyeing up the cut price ones at the local store and wondering if they can be brought back from the brink?)
So here I say Hello and thank you, to you all for providing such a good place to come and see what's possible with Orchids. And a huge thanks in advance for the tips I know I'll pick up on the way. :bowing

Actually, I really know nuts about orchids till my wife has been started growing Orchids all over our balcony last 5 years ago and my late mama also grew orchids in her balcony , too.
So during festive seasons like Christmas, New Year, Birthday celebration , tea party and house warming , both my mama and my wife often give their best homegrown orchids to our relatives and friends. That their love language...
Anyway, I 'll try my best to accommodate myself to upload more pictures of my wife's homegrown orchids as much as possible so that you guys the gurus will able give much advise us the best out of our orchids. My late mama was an expertise, she knew every orchids by name and their needs. So due to that , my wife and I want to carry out my late mama's legacy and the memory of my late mama to live on ...

My main problem is: orchids are extremly rare and expensive here:(. I've somehow managed to collect some phalaenopsis' and cymbidiums, but nothing else. Hopefully that will change!
I love them because they look so alive, like butterflies... sometimes I feel like their wings are going to move and fly away... they're so beautiful.

I registered as a member last february 2009 and have been growing orchids since then. l love this new hobby, and it is worth every minute I've spent caring for them.
With orchids everyday is a new day, a different day. Everyday some orchid plants are growing new roots, new leaves, spike initiated, flower buds forming, flower blooming, and dying while at the same time the other orchid plants just stop growing completely. My point is that orchids are such a fascinating group of plants, and fragrance is a bonus for us to enjoy (pollinators have to wait for their turn).:lol:
I had been into tropical fish and exotic parrots prior to this new hobby but feeding them, cleaning the fish tanks and bird cages every day had proved to be too much work for me not to mention the mess they made. I'm talking about ten fish tanks and six bird cages.
The reason I hadn't posted any thread because back then I only had a couple of plants, both of them were Phals. currently, they are growing new leaf and one of them is in short spike already. I've learned so much about the orchid culture in general,particularly Phalaenopsis species, primary and complex hybrids.
I'm looking forward to learning and seeing beautiful pictures of orchid flowers from you guys.

I´m 24 years old, and i´m growing orchids since 3 years ago. I´m also a member of the Guatemalan Orchid Society (AGO) since 2 years ago. I have some experience in orchids of cool weather (Rhynchostele, Acronia, Restrepia) also i´m starting to grow Terrestial orchids, at this time I have some species of Govenia, Cyclopogon, Gracielanthus (Aulosephalum), Malaxis and Sarcoglottis. I do also have some other orchids like Gongora and Stanhopea.
I also love take pictures of orchids, in the wild, home, AGO meetings and in the Expositions (we have 2 at year)

A friend gave my miss's some dendrobiums and a couple of cyms , last year ! As they slowly started to dry up and looked sad over the next month or so , i took pity , and built a little shade house , and claimed them as my own !
Well low and behold after 9 odd months , the dendrobium has started to flower !
This little event ,has sparked a passion in me ?
So a new and improved shade house is getting constructed ! with the desire to learn and grow orchids !

a year ago August, i was searching stuff on Ebay, and I found orchids, so i bought 2 orchids, Zgygonisia cynosure 'Blue Birds', and Catt. percivaliana.
My office plants were doing well, so I thought I would add some color to the office.
I watered them like all my other indoor/house plants, I poured water into a plastic pot every week. I had no clue the water needed to drain from the pots, it just sat there, and when I felt the bark get dry, I added more.
Well, my catt died, and my Zygo was dying, when I decided to learn sonmething about them, I found a local orchid club, Santa Clara Valley Orchid Society. I went to 2 meetings, the last being their auction. I also bought 'Orchids for Dummies from Amazon, and I started learning valuable info.
So, i took out my drill, and drilled many holes in my plastic pots, so the water can drain. Also, I went to a nursery, and bought a long plastic 'window box' kind of
thing, and I put in aquarium gravel, and keep it wet, up to 1/4" below the orchid pots.
I have bought several other orchids that are doing well, and my Zygo has started to grow new white roots, where the rest of them are black from water damage.
I am enjoying them now, and have accepted the position of Secretary at the SCVOS.
I also went to "Orchids in the Park" in San Francisco recently, and learned a lot more, I can;t wait to attend all the Bay Area orchid society shows, and greenhouse tours.
I really enjoy this forum, and I thank the founders.

At first on the windowsill, then in an indoor greenhouse (a plastic affair in a spare bedroom), and the last ten years in a real 6m by 3m greenhouse.
Orchids fascinate me because they live 'from nothing', their roots just growing in the open air. For the average terrestrial plant an epiphytic orchid must be something like a ghost.
My special interest: every species of orchid. Alas, my rather cool and shadowed greenhouse prevents me from growing spectacular groups such as Catasetums and Cattleyas. But I do have a lot of Dendrobiums, Bulbo's, Coelogynes, Pleurothalloids and some Gongoras and Stanhopeas.
I don't have 'green fingers' (or is it a green thumb in English?), so learning to grow orchids is a slow and sometimes painful process for me, the road behind me strewn with the corpses of murdered (mostly drowned) plants.
In this forum I hope to learn a lot about orchid cultivation, and of course to share what I have learned myself.

I grandmother used to love her Orchids and looked after them very well. I havent really appreciated Orchids till recently I got given 3 pots with about 10 bulbs in each. I cant ask my grandmother anything as she has now passed on, so I will be looking to you guys for help.
I did get one of the puts with a flower on them so I will take some pics and post shortly as I have no idea what type of Orchid they are.

I'm an avid plant-a-holic, and was introduced to orchids by a co-worker a few months ago; she cast her line, set it, and patiently reeled me in.
I'm hooked.
I've been reading, researching, trying to figure out the alliances and families, the somewhat convoluted nomenclature, and the sometimes fussy requirements. I just can't get enough information fast enough, and I'm loving every minute of it. Bonsai are enjoyable in a calm and patient way, while orchids for some reason are just exciting. I can't really wrap my brain around WHY, they just are.
Well, that's my rambling and probably incoherent introduction. See you guys around!

My favorite species to grow are coelogyne, phaius, dendrobium, jewelorchids & (relatively) small-flowered cattleya's.
Unfortunatly I don't have a greenhouse so my plants have to settle for a livingroom environment and i found a few types that grow well here :).

I am a Canadian living in Hong Kong, I have just recently moved into a new house. the previous owner was an Orchid collector but because she was moving overseas she only got paperwork to import her most valuable orchids and left the rest here. I now have 40 orchids and I have never even owned one before. I think alot need some desperate care as there were a few weeks that the house was empty.
My plan is to identify them all and learn how to take care of them all. I am hoping you guys can help. I put some first photos up in the identifying forum.
I look forward to learning from everyone here and sharing my new inheritance.

I finally decided to register...as I've been lurking as a guest for the past month or so XD
I'm a college junior studying zoology, but I am also passionate about orchids. Most of my collection is fairly new (obtained within the past year) but I have had some plants for longer. The one that's been with me the longest I've had for about 5 years. To be honest, I don't know exactly what kind about 1/3 of my collection is. I hope that maybe some of you experts can help me, once I can take pictures. I don't live in a dorm so I have a bit of growing room!
See my profile for my orchid collection list. Aside from orchids I have 1 bonsai plant and 4 bonsai in training, a plumeria, a christmas cactus, a few cacti seedlings, jade, and a dwarf orange tree (or tangerine tree?...long story).
I am also pretty passionate about dogs. I have two--Tucker and Carmella (aka Tuck and Mellie, both little ten pounders). I take agility classes with Mellie and hope to be able to compete with her someday if we are able to get good enough. Kind of hoping to (maybe?) get a thrid dog next year, money depending. I work at a dog boarding kennel, but my dog fix is never satiated!
Also, I'm moving within the next month, and although the windowsils will be narrower (not as many pots will be small enough to fit on the windowsil)...the windows are facing in a much more beneficial direction. Right now I only 1-3 hours of light in the early am...and at the new place there is light through most of the afternoon! This is a huge plus in my area, where in the winter the sun rises at 7-8 am and goes down around 4.
I hope to meet some people with similar interests (most of my friends aren't plant people let alone orchid people) and get some advice, as I am quite inexperienced with anything besides your run-of-the-mill home improvement store phals.

I'm Anthony :waving I'm 23 and I live in Plymouth, Minnesota, USA (Minneapolis suburb). I'm a student nurse and a hospital pharmacy technician. The orchid obsession is a rather new one, for me, but is already taking it's toll :evil: I've got an extra room in my apartment, as my roommate has moved out. This gives me reason to believe I need to fill it with plants! I'm very lucky to live about a mile from an amazing orchid nursery, Orchids Limited (Buy Orchids and Orchid Supplies). I bought three phalaenopsis a few yrs back and stuck them in a window. One of them took one look at the growing condition and died on the spot, the other two have languished there since. Then this spring while we where dragging all of my other plants out for the summer, my husband grabbed them up and stuck them outside. The difference was unbelievable, they put on new leaves and plumped up. The roots wrapped around the baskets and they got a light purple tint. No blooms yet but I'm hopeful.
I also picked up a few "oncidium like" orchids from a local orchid auction, and after I got them home two of them began growing spikes.
This site has been a great source of information.
The kids and I decided to try one of the phalaenopsis in S/H. And so far it seems to be taking well to it, no major issues other then a little fuzzies on the roots. And after doing a little homework on our water quality decided to build a rain barrel. And wouldn't you know, it's supposed to rain all weekend.
Our next project will be a portable green house. Something we can move around when it's time to water.

Wed, 19 Aug 2009 20:47:49 GMTSince moving to London from Australia I have seen that there is quite a large orchid movement here. Flowers just don't last where I come from in Oz. I have been eyeing off Phal's since moving here six months ago and now I finally have one. I am very excited about it, but yes I know that these plants are delicate and need certain care.
As soon as I brought it home I began researching and I am now overwhelmed with information. I have had a good observe of the roots of the plant. I also checked that the pot was moist and not soggy down the bottom and found that this was ok.
After I doing this I found that there are a few things concerning me about it. In a matter of one day I have noticed that most of the roots have gone from a normal green to roots with chalky green spots/sections on it. Now as soon a I brought it home I noticed little bugs crawling through the bark and over the roots. They are not going onto the leaves but are remaining in the mulch. I am not sure what they are but I suspect they are responsible for the roots.
Now I have not purchased anything else for this plant and plan to do so tomorrow.
Please help me with some information/suggestions as to what to do about the bug problem and just things that I should puchase to keep up my plant (which is flowering quite beautifully at the moment). I have read a lot so I am not completely in the dark but simple points to stick to at first would be great.
I really want to take care of it well!

Many of these are growing new canes/leaves. Got 2 shop lights and 2/ 4 CFL to play with - and a ffire escape S exposure - sun filtered by tree in the summer.

So I've been following these forums for a little over half a year now, and finally decided to sign up... Just thought I would say hello! :waving
I was first introduced to orchids by my mom a few years ago, but didn't get my own until six months ago when I rescued a drowning Phal from a co-worker who thought the potting mixture had to be saturated at all times! I quickly learned what root rot was, but thanks to the threads I found on this site I have been nursing the now little thing back to health with the sphag-n-bag process. Insert me getting hooked on this site -->here<-- :lol:
I currently don't have the best growing conditions in my apartment, but it seems to be enough to sustain a beautiful Vanda I purchased at the beginning of May that hangs in a wooden basket at a window... kept its blooms for four weeks before dropping, and now has substantial root growth. I don't know a whole lot about the Vanda, though, so expect me to be cruising previous Vanda posts and asking questions. ;)
Anywho, I am looking forward to getting involved more on this site, and hope to learn a lot from everyone!

I'm kay. I found this board while searching for advice about my Vanda. For years I thought I killed anything green, but admired orchids from afar. Then I 'rescued' a Phal from a clearance bin (prob not best start). It got serious crown rot in a week (was told to water it 3 times a day and keep leaves wet. hmmm.) I heard about the error of my ways and am now a reformed and proud owner of Phals, a Vanda and a new branching out into the realm of the Slipper.

So, clearly, this is the place for me!
I have been growing for about 10 years. About 2 years ago we moved and built a small greenhouse. It is packed to the gills. I grow lots of different things but I love angraecoids and phals. I have lots of them--angraecums, aerangis, jumellea, dendrophylax, sobennikoffia, mystacidium, aeranthes, rangeris and a few other misc ones. In total, a hundred or so plants--mainly species, but a few hybrids as well.
My phals include two hundred-ish plants as well as seedlings in various stages from just deflasked to nearly blooming size. I like the species phals, but also the crazy new hybrids. So it is a real mix of the species, hybrids, multi-florals and the big traditional phals.
And the rest falls into the --oh, I like that category. Probably 50 vandas, 20ish catts and brassavola hybrids, 25-30 neofinetias and hybrids and I'm a sucker for interesting species generally. So if it can handle warm humid summers, and it strikes my fancy, it usually finds its way into the greenhouse. I tend to lean toward the vandeae--as you can probably tell. :)

I have been growing phals and dendrobium for many years and lucky me have the fortune to have a spot they love inside in the winter and outside in summer .Having such good fortune I have decided to go for some cattleyas this year. I was on a small vaction trip to North carolina and discovered a nice orchid grower in Hickory nc (just google hickory nc orchids to find Ironwood estates) and purchased Dixie hummingbird ,lemon chiffon, and mac holms newberry.
I took them home to my cousins and put them on the porch nice bright light no full sun. the lemon chiffon was a nice plant nothing huge all three are a year maybe two from bloom size and in 2 1/2 maybe 3 inch clear pots.
well while out yesterday a big rain with wind managed to take the lemon chiffon right out of the pot and on the floor no real damage to the top but Im sure some to the roots.She is in active growth but the psudobulb isnt filled in yet and the four of five older pb behig this are shriveled .
Ok enough ramble my question is would it be ok to mount this one now or should I repot her and mount next year?

When i moved in here about 5-6 months ago i found an abandoned orchid in my yard! At first i thought, that could never be and orchid because it would surely be dead if it was since the house had been empty for AGES, but i nurtured it non the less just in case! Well it seems pretty happy now and i think it is a dendrobium orchid, i will have to take a pic and post it on the identification forum.
My biggest concern is the medium in which it is growing and to add to that, there is portulacca growing in the pot with it! I dont want to transplant it as i am afraid i will kill it! alot of the roots are above the soil medium and i have noticed a peice of orchid (almost like a cutting) which has been left in the pot which has put down roots and grown leaves!!!
What should i do? maybe take the little peice and plant it in the correct medium once i have identified it and leave the bigger plant in the pot that it seems happy in?
please help me take care of this poor thing!

Fri, 31 Jul 2009 14:03:01 GMTI don't grow a lot of orchids b/c I usually manage to bring them to a quick death. But years ago, I found this darling little orchid and kept it living for years. Bought it at Lowes, but when I have inquired about these, they said they no longer sale them. She said they are "something I don't remember" kind of orchid. They sell Phales, Catts, etc. Anyway, the one I had bloomed a dark burgundy/pink, and was very small. It was happy hanging in the kitchen w/very little care. A friend said she thought it was either a jewel or blettilla. I know I don't have a lot of details, but for those of you that are experts, do you have any thoughts.

I've been growing for about four years now. I belong to an orchid society, but I don't get to the meetings often because of distance, so the forums have been my best source of info. I became handicapped 8 years ago at the hands of inept surgeons, so my plans of traveling in my retirement went belly up. Spilt milk, so I am now devoting my time to other challenges.
I bought my first orchid 2.5 years ago...a poor sicky thing on sale (really cheap) at a hardware store. It hasn't been until today that I learned what kind it is.:dance: It's a phal!!!

Through friend I became fascinated with carnivorous plants. I had never had good luck with venus flytraps and was ignorant of the many varieties of pitcher plants before that. After becoming aware of their needs I found them extremely easy to grow and soon had a collection of pitcher plants that are amazing.
Orchids, while beautiful still seemed out of reach. There was no way I was going to pay $20 for a plant that would give a flower that faded in a week (my experience up to that point :blushing:) and then looked plain unless you had the extensive knowledge needed to make it bloom again.
I finally got the opportunity to try orchids the first time a little over a year ago after buying some at work that had lost their blooms and were marked down to $1 each. The poor things (phalenopsis) looked dehydrated so I brought the home and soaked the well and repeatedly and ... of course... killed them. After reading up I figured out what I had done so I tried again at the next opportunity. These fared much better and lived although I was still overwatering. They didn't flower though until while moving, I put them in an east facing basement window and didn't have time to over care for them. When I did get back to them there were lovely emerging buds on the spikes! I have now fallen in love with the gorgeous long-lasting blooms and uniquely adapted plants :)
It wasn't long until I had the opportunity to add sone cane orchids to my collection since they carry them in the floral department as well. They have done well too although not as well as my phalenopsis despite my best efforts although I do have flowers on one that I broke down and purchased at full price that have been there for a month now. None of the cane orchids seem to be growing though. I hope they will do better now that I have discoved this forum.
What prompted me to find you guys though is my recent aquisition of several orchids I have no prior experience with. I had, for some time, been lusting after several of the varieties of bagged "Better-Gro" branded orchids at my local Lowes. The price was steep though at $15 a plant to try something new and I couldn't decide which one I wanted. My down fall came last night when I discovered all of them on the discount rack.
I am now the proud caretaker of 14 new orchid plants (with some duplicates on varietiy). I hope to lose as few as possible since they all look like they will be lovely. I will be doing much research to futher that goal :)

Let me introduce myself, I'm Anthony, a 21 year old student from Bruges (Belgium).
My "collection" started with two orchids in november 2008, a white one (probably the "Ariadne" from Bock Bio Science) and a purple one "Queen of the Night" (it was tagged, also from Bock Bio Science). The purple has started producing new buds this month. :D
From then on I've bought orchids at a ratio 1 per month. I've got 13 Phalaenopsis now, 7 of them are in bloom right now, 1 is producing new buds and the other 5 have bloomed and are standing in the garage now facing the north windows producing new roots and leaves (it's a little bit colder there too so I hope that after a few weeks there's a chance they'll be producing new flowerspikes)
The latest one which has been added to the collection is the "Doritaenopsis Everspring Prince Harlequin" (pictures in my gallery), it's the first orchid I've bought online and ... well, on arrival I sadly noticed it's also the first one with a terminal spike so I'll have to force him to produce keiki's since it's such a wonderfull flower.
I'm looking forward to learn from everyone here on the board and am planning to expand my collection with Cattleya's, Vanda's and many other species.:biggrin:

Thu, 16 Jul 2009 01:06:19 GMThi everyone...I've been reading this bb off and on a few years...I'm not a total novice to orchids...while at university, I became involved in a local orchid group..older folks with vast amounts of knowledge that they gladly shared... I was kind of their new generation and I learned so much...then after university I moved on to life and got away from it...now, 25 years later I'd like to get back into it.
Altho I like all orchids, I've always been really drawn to the phalaenopsis...so I've been looking around, and to my surprise most phals these days seem to multi and vibrant coloured flowers with a lot of doritas hybrids..smaller flowers...that wasn't so much a thing when I got interested...it's nice to see them...
however..I'm looking for the big "old-fashioned', I guess, whites and pinks and red-coloured lips and pink/white stripes...I'm going to try the new colours, but some of these large flowered "old school" phals is what I'd like to find...is anyone still doing them, can anyone point me in a general direction for finding them.?

2 years ago, my grandmother passed away and two of her orchids were given to my mother. I didn't pay attention to them, and they were entirely in her care. Unfortunately, she didn't know what she was doing and I noticed something was wrong. So, I read up on orchids and their care and decided to take over. I got both orchids and managed to save one of them, but the other didn't make it.
The orchid that made it now has a spike and is doing great. I've been taking care of it for a year now, and have 4 other orchids since then. I have a Miltonia, 2 phals, and an oncidium(my grandmothers).
The last one I got was my uncle's phal. He wanted me to take care of several of his plants, and left them on the front porch which gets full sun. He apparently did not know that this will burn the plant, and so it was severely sunburnt.. I have since recovered it, to my own surprise, and now it is growing two new leaves.

I've been growing for 15 years, ever since a friend moved and bequeathed his 2 prized cyms to me in '94. They both threw up a couple spikes, the most beautiful flowers opened, and I was hooked.
I grow mostly for fragrance, with exceptions, of course, :biggrin:. I grow both in- and outdoors, and my collection contains mostly catts, cyms, dend nobiles, phals, with a sprinkling of zygos, encyclias, neofinetias, oncs, paphs and a few others. Just copied the list into my profile, which numbers about 220 now, whittled from 500+ a few years back. Less to keep away from the chewing kitties.
My radiata just opened its first flower today. Impatiently waiting for the fragrance, maybe in a day or so. Can't claim credit for it, though, bought it in bud from Andy's back in May. Radiata pic in Picasa

After quite a few years of moving around (and several smaller collections of plants that had to be sold/given away every time I moved! :( ) I think I am now settled here for at least a few years, so I am looking to rebuild my collection.
I have grown a few orchids in the past - mainly phals & dendr etc, but I am really just a novice. I am particularly interested in starting out building my collection this time with a few local/regional species, although I am sure it won't stop there!
A week or two ago I split a dendrobium biggibum (Cooktown orchid) into four separate plants, and they seem to be doing well so far. I also have a phalaenopsis amabilis 'formosum' (with a flower spike forming -woot!); a dendrobium antennatum 'australis'; and a couple of other random, As Yet Unidentified, likely-hybrids. :)
Another area I am simply itching to get into is the world of miniature orchids - I had a few previously but couldn't bring them back to Australia. Any recommendations for online sources would be really welcome!
I am looking forward to learning more from everyone here. I am also joining the local Orchid Society.
Non-orchid-wise, I am also interested in carnivorous plants, ferns and my first love, bonsai (although many traditional bonsai species will not grow well here in the tropics, so I will be back on the ficus).

I found it kinda funny that the price of these plants could vary so much. A gardening place charged me $37 for my Phalaenopsis, and I bought a Cattleya last night from a different place for $14! I do have some questions about growing these beautiful plants, but I'll begin another thread for that.

I used to grow Phals, Catts and Vanda's in my backyard in the Philippines. When I moved to the Midwest 25+ years ago I decided I couldn't grow orchids here.
Two months ago I got hold of 2 Catt compots and decided that even if I couldn't flower orchids in West Central Illinois, I could at least watch them grow. So now I have 60 + seedlings growing like wild under lights and I'm an addict again!
This time I'd like to try something totally new-- Oncidium intergenerics.
I'd love any feedback/ suggestions :thanx:except the type that tells me I've totally lost my mind.

However, my second phal has a dying flower which is crispy and a second flower which looks like it's on the same path. It also has some black spotting under its leaves although the tops look fine.
Is this just the end of it's flowering and I'm being paranoid, or should I be concerned?

I lived in Texas all of my life, but now I'm in Louisiana and the growing conditions are very different! I never used to leave my orchids outside in Texas, but I can do that here! It's great. The humidity is perfect and my orchids adore it. Sadly after having moved, I lost seven of my plants over the years as well as a few others to a freak snowstorm one spring when I left them out on the porch and got snowed in at work. They were frozen when I got home.
Well I hope to pick up some tips here for my new growing area and I look forward to searching for the perfect varieties that will do exceptionally well here. I'm starting fresh and it's kind of exciting!
Now I get to go look at all of your beauties and hopefully gain some insight!

We started with orchids a few months ago when my husband brought home a beautiful white phal on impulse. We learned the hard way with that orchid (just lost it recently), but learned a lot of things through this site in how to take care of phals and what to look out for next time!
We added a red phal (blooming now, recent purchase, not sure the variety) and a cattleya slc best friend cleopatra (starting a new growth) from a local orchid show here in Pittsburgh, PA that we really enjoyed attending. So thanks for everyone's help and we've been enjoying our orchids!

Mon, 22 Jun 2009 02:51:46 GMTHello! I'm Lu and I'm new here. I am the proud new owner of a bamboo orchid. (Is that really a type of orchid, or bamboo?) My mother-in-law brought it to me from her trip to Hawaii.
She also got herself one, and grandmother-in-law one, so that we can "compare notes." Being the type-A personality that I am, I interpret that as an invitation to a friendly competition. In other words, I want to wow the pants off everyone with my orchid-cultivating skillz.
The only other orchid I've raised was a phaleo-thing (another gift from MIL) that lived about two years, grew well and bloomed twice, until I left it out to get some fresh air and a cold snap got it.
Any tips?

I've been growing orchids for about two years, my favorite and successful genus is Phalaenopsis. For the time being I've got few orchids but their number is constantly increasing in an apparent unstoppable way, in spite of my never-ending lack of money and free space!:(

I'm 27 and live several hours south of Perth in Western Australia. Last year I acquired an orchid collection from a friend and they seem to have settled in nicely under my east facing verandah. Nearly the whole lot have suddenly come into bud and it is so exciting to get up every morning to see what has opened. I have spent this weekend moving them around the garden to get maximum winter sun - we'll see how long that level of fussing lasts but it could be a while!
I have a number of Dendrobium hybrids, some Cymbidiums, a Phal and some unnamed types which look like to my amateur eye like Coelogynes and Vandas (think I will have to wait until they flower to find out).
My avatar is a white bunny orchid (Eriochilus sp.) found in a patch of forest down the road. One only wishes it was possible to cultivate these and the other amazing terrestrial species.
I'm really enjoying looking at other member's setups and collections on this board, looks like a fantastic place :)

I first got into orchids several years ago in Louisiana and killed a few phalaenopsis before I figured out what I was doing -- but once I did, I had cattleyas and dendrobiums blooming and growing well. I moved here about four years ago and left my orchids down south, but I'm in an apartment with a good space for them now, so I am back. Picked up a Miltassia and then a Cattleya at Lowe's, and both have new growths doing well, so I took a plunge last night and ordered a few from a grower. They do better in groups, after all. :biggrin:
One of the ones I'm getting, I just realized I'm not sure of the species and that may affect how I set up their habitat. It's definitely a dendrobium and the grower lists it as "Den Blue Sky"; can't find any other information for that name online, though. I know I've seen flowers of this form before, but that's not telling me enough. Once it actually gets here, of course, I can take pictures of the whole plant but I'm curious now so I'm attaching the grower's photo of the bloom. Any guesses?

I'm absolutely fascinated with orchids, and tragically in love with them. I really believe I'd choose a new orchid over groceries. That's the good part.
Mainly a big fan of cym. and e., though as I'm sure you all know, absolutely any orchid will do. I've started thinking about giving away my "normal" plants in order to make more room for orchids - anyone out there with this same malady? Realistically I'll end up keeping all of them and sleeping outside in order to give my buddies more room.
Anyway, great to be on here. I've already learned a bunch just from surfing around the past week or so. I'm looking forward to getting to know some people whose obsession peers my own, cause BOY are my friends sick of me telling them about orchids. :evil:

I'm a medical student from Bogotá, Colombia, own 16 orchids and have been growing them since 2006. Sometimes I just don't have the time I wish to do all the stuff you guys do for them but my mother helps. I hope in a year or so when I'm done with med school I'll have a little more time to do the advanced things you talk about, or maybe not... However, I can't live without them.
Most of my plants I can't certainly identify. I'm waiting on them to bloom and really looking forward to it.

Just joined Orchid Board to see what is going on here, try to learn a few things, make some new friends, and offer help to some folks if I can. I've been growing orchids here in Hawai'i for about 15 years and have come to the conclusion that I have a SERIOUS problem. Every time I see something new I have to have it. I have been involved with local orchid societies for as long as I have been keeping orchids and have been concentrating on species for the last 8-10 years. I have a greenhouse that is about 3200 square feet and mostly full of species. I am currently growing Cattleyas, Dendrobiums, and Paphiopedilums, as well as assorted other Genera. I was until recently an active participant in the American Orchid Society and Honolulu Orchid Society judging systems but decided that appreciating orchids is a far better way to view them than judging them. I have a few registered hybrids that I have done and also enjoy doing Culture talks to various societies here in Hawai'i when I have time. I sell a few plants on Ebay from time to time and was thinking about selling a few here as well in the future. Anyway, just thought I would take this oppurtunity to say hi!

i also inherited one mystery orchid from my mother a few months ago when she moved out of state - it's a large plant, but hasn't bloomed in a while and i have no idea what kind of orchid it is or how to care for it - and it seems to be having some problems.

I am new to the forum, and relatively new to orchids. I have 5 Phals, all were purchased without blooms on them (or tags) from various places, so every time one blooms it is a surprise! My oldest plant is about 7 years old.
I also have two Oncidium, a genus new to me. Both were impulse purchases at Trader Joes, I have a Lava Burst and a Blue Birds. The Blue Birds I just bought yesterday, and it seems in rough shape, so I am crossing my fingers. The Lava burst is just getting ready to flower for the second time!
Anyway, I am happy to have found this forum, it is always good to have advice and experience close at hand!

My name is Dave. I live in Reno, Nevada. Land of hot and dry, or cold and dry. Did I mention it is dry here? Often it is 95+ degrees and 10-20% humidity. The dew point is almost always below freezing in the winter. The upside is that an evaporative cooler is much cheaper to operate than air conditioning.
Anywho, I did a stint in an Iowa greenhouse right out of high school and have liked plants ever since. (I also gained a desire never to change all of the glass in the roof of another greenhouse.) I got started with orchids within the last 3 years. I guess I like Phal's the best, if only that I have rebloomed a few. I recently have a thin wallet and have aquired a basket case rescue strategy. Many of the plants I buy have no flowers, and many of those are NOID. "I know it's marked down to $9, but look, it's wilted and I see a bug on it, I'll give you $6. What, you have to call a manager too?" (sigh while looking at watch), "I'll give you $X" Try that at Lowes sometime.

Sun, 31 May 2009 14:04:50 GMTI have been lurking on this board and researching on the internet for a few months, now, and I finally got a 2 phalaenopsis(ses) (phal equestris and...I have been lurking on this board and researching on the internet for a few months, now, and I finally got a 2 phalaenopsis(ses) (phal equestris and a phal I-Hsin Spot Eagle "Montclair") this past Friday from Hausermann. I have had to re-pot the phal equestris which was already in bud, but the roots were bursting all over the place and the plant was literally coming out of the pot. I actually repotted it in semi-hydroponics. I would post pics, but wouldn't you know? My ($400) digital camera just bit the dust!!
I hope I'm not biting off more than I can chew..... I guess we'll see... But in any case, I want to thank all of you for such great information and for inspiring me to try. If it weren't for the education here, I don't think I would have even thought of it. This is a great board!!
