Can the plexi stand the heat or will it melt? And do i need more fans inside the tank to move the air around?

I've just begun my first orchid terrarium. I wanted to document my progress here and also ask a few questions. I'd be thrilled with any input or suggestions.

First question: I have two 15 Watt tubular fluorescent bulbs (equivalent to two 75 Watt incandescents) and the tank height is 25". I want to be able to bloom Dendrobiums, Tolumnarias and maybe an Slc, so will that be enough light?

Second question: are there any recommendations for a general-purpose substrate in which I could grow paphs, jewel orchids, some ferns, a nepenthes and a begonia? I was thinking of cypress mulch mixed with sphagnum, or I heard of something called jungle mix available at pet stores, but I'm open to suggestions.

Third: I have heard of people having problems with "water walls" or waterfalls flowing down the back wall of the tank. Would I be more advised to go with a mister rather than the small fountain pump I'm intending to get? If I do stick with a fountain pump, will the running water coupled with air circulation create the desired humidity?

My setup is as follows:

5-sided tank (not sure how many gallons, as I purchased it used) 25" tall, longer sides are 22" each

I'm making the cover:
2 fluorescent bulbs
aluminum foil behind the bulbs to reflect the light down
2 computer fans, both mounted at the back of the tank, one facing up and one facing toward the front
Vent holes drilled along the three front sides of the tank and above one fan to create circular air motion and keep the front clear of moisture

The background:
Black silicone
Great Stuff
Oak and cedar pieces of worn wood
Bed-a-beast or similar material to cover the Great Stuff

Substrate:
1" sections of pvc pipe, covered by fine mesh
a thin layer of activated charcoal
some sort of orchid mix

A small fountain pump with a tube up the back wall of the tank to create a waterfall

During the day I'm going to close off the vents and just circulate air within the tank to bring heat and humidity up, and during the night I'll open the vents and create a circulation of air with the room to lower the temperature. I'm hoping to get a nighttime temperature of 65-70 and daytime of 80-85.

Plants I want:
Aerangis biloba
Dracula lotax
Goodyera hispida
Haraella odorata
Ludisia discolor
Macodes petiola
Paphiopedilum delenatii
Phalaenopsis equestris
Phalaenopsis violacea (I've always loved this)
Restrepia striata
some Tolumnia hybrid
Nepenthes bellii
a miniature begonia
a few Tillandsias
a selaginella
a climbing fern
a maidenhair fern

I'm intending to buy plants from Andy's Orchids, Mountain Orchids, Orchids by Hausermann and Black Jungle - has anyone dealt with these places?

I hope my descriptions make sense - once I start putting this all together, I'll post a bunch of pictures.

EDIT: I've changed the plant list to accommodate lower light

I´m thinking buying a led setup for my new orchidarium.
I discover a led fixture in a aquarium shop, that was developed for growing aquarium plants.
It´s rated at 6500k, but i´m afraid that the wavelenght is not to good between 650 and 700nm.
The power of 2 units is about 15000 lux.
What do you think of this system?

Can the new T5 grow lights, 2'long do the job or is it too much light if it sits atop the terrarium? I like the idea of a little less heat in the terrarium. I plan to grow mini and micro mini orchids in them. Don't know yet what tolerances they have.

Hello,

I'm just wondering if anyone who keeps a paludarium can let me know of their method for fertilization- ideally I'm hoping to be able to add fertilizer to the main body of water within the tank which pumps to a drip wall which waters the epiphytes along the back. The tank is not stocked in any way.

Has anyone had any experience with this? I've been trying to read up on methods of aquarium nutrient dosing as well as that for terrestrial/epiphytic plants, and I have to say I can't tell up from down at this point.

My primary concerns are algae and anything else that might stem from a body of fertilized water sitting under a 55W power compact- any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi All,

this is my first post so please be patient with me :)
My spouse is growing orchids and tillandsias for a while now and I've been always playing with the thought of having an aquarium with some fish.
So I came upon an idea that could work for both of us.
Would it be possible, or is anyone of you having a setup like the following:
A 120x60x60 cm aquarium with fish & stuff in it and over it a glass box, as if an extension of the aquarium, 100-120 cm and a set of lights over it and some fans?
There would be a branch over the water with orchids and tillandsias, maybe a rock background with some pots mounted on it?
The question is if would they both survive?

Thank you very much!

the humidity is kept at about 70%. Im just wondering if there r any orchids I could keep in the terrarium. Im interested in some mini orchids or epiphytic orchids to grow on the back of the terrarium

Hello there,

Since I'm a regular reader of the "terrarium gardeners" ,
I would like to say hello to all other terrariumlovers.
The main purpose of my terrarium is to give a nice house to my poisin dart frogs (dendrobatus tinctorius oyapock) but the orchids are a very positive side effect.
I (try) to grow
phalaenopsis cornu cervi
chilochista nakorupanamensis
isabelia virginalis
pteroceras semiteritfolia
podangis dactyloceras
sedira japonica
cischweinfia dasyandra
epigeneium nakaharae
ceratocentrum fessellii
doritis pulch

several schoenorchis

I allready lost a few schoenorchis but if you don't try ....
It's faily warm with high humidity, the frogs like it, i hope the orchids as well.

I'm not very good at this but I try to add a few pictures

greetings from Holland

Hi all,

I just got a new Exoterra setup this past weekend and I'm looking for some advice on how to set it up...a few questions.

1. Lighting: The tank came with a light hood that can take two 26W CFLs. Along with light from my south-west window should this be enough?

2. Temperature: Because I'm using the sun to provide most of the light it can become quite hot in the tank. Curently I have a fogger that moderates the temperature somewhat. Does anyone have any other methods that might help?

3. Plant maintenance: While I intend to plant some plants directly into the terrarium, some of my more loved orchids I want to be able to take in and out for maintenance. Has anyone found a way to do this and still maintian a planted terrarium look rather than just a glass case with orchid pots in it?

Thanks,

Tyler

Hello

long time listener first time caller
about a year ago I built my first vivarium out of a 20gallon high AGA tank, needless to say the results were not excellent, although it did somewhat work. the tank ran for a 5 months and then I tossed it, just didnt look good. so Ive been reading... and Ive got a plan.
I have some knowledge as Ive been keeping a pretty high tech 50 gallon planted aquarium for a few years now, pressurized co2, high light, etc.
so now Id like to build a vivarium from scratch and do it right.
I was thinking about buying an exo-terra but after taking a close look I was not thrilled with the aesthetics of the tanks.
so I'd like to have one made, most likely by a local glass store as there are many many glass stores by my apt

the tank:
the tank would be 30"H18"D30W built entirely of 1/4" glass, with two sliding doors on the front
I got the design from the article located here:
Constructing a Orchidarium - Step by Step (warning: multiple Illustrations) - The Orchid Source - Orchid Forum
and tweaked it. then I whipped up a little 3D model of it

bottom view hood

please see attached and let me know what your thoughts are, do you think it would work?, see any potential problems?
I have a few initial questions
will the tank support the hood properly?

I would like to have a some water area so that I can grow many aquatic plants in emersed forms (crypts). Im thinking around six inches of water with a false bottom in the back half, what issues does that create?

I also plan on trying my hand at many small orchids (my dad is a 75 year old orchid super freak)

tell me what you think?

thanks in advance

I am working on a new riparium setup in a 56-gallon tank. I picked it up on sale just the other night.

My general plan for substrate is to use a light-colored coarse sand with larger stones and manzanita branches that will stand up erect out of the water. My 65-gallon has the general layout for manzanita that I have in mind.

That tank also has a similar shape, but it is 6" wider. The new one is 30" wide X 18" deep (front-to-back) X 24" tall.

I am selecting plants with the idea of maintaining low to moderate light and moderate humidity. This tank has quite a bit of room, so I can include some larger specimens. I don't have any orchids in mind yet--and the lighting that I'm planning might be too dim--but I have several other intriguing tropicals that shoul work well in the tank.

Well, it's finally finished.....now all it needs is more plants! I've been slowly collecting materials, and finall got motivated to put it all together. The back wall is moss, sandwiched between two sheets of chicken wire. It worked out quite well cuz you can form it to whatever shape you desire. There is running water trickling down the log in the center, and a small waterfall on the left side. The ultrasonic fogger, in conjunction with the running water, keep the RH above 90%. The temps maintain about 70-75 degrees fahrenheit, and the lid has two pc fans (intake and exhaust) that come on for 15 minutes, every two hours. This renews the air pretty nicely, and the temps stay at a nice level.....so I can finally grow some cooler growing species. I currently have two ghost orchids, Bulbo. Jersey, Bulbo. maximum, Epi. porpax var alba, Den. loddigesii, a C. nobilior var amalie seedling, an ant vine, and a couple of ferns. I have a Bulbo. lasiochilum on the way, and I'll probably put a carnivorous plant in there, eventually.

Hi all,

In the classic terrarium the base is usually covered with a layer of gravel for drainage followed by a layer of some kind of moss or bark in which one would grow the plants. Is it possible instead to turn the whole terrarium into one enclosed orchid mount assuming that all I want to grow in there are epiphites?

My idea...adapted from something I saw on the Black Jungle website:

Spray foam the whole tank (bottom, back and sides) in which would be embedded pieces of cypress and cork. Carved into the base would be a small pond which would serve as drainage for my misting/fogging systems. There would be no gravel or bark in the bottom as one would normally find in a standard terrarium. Ideally I would have orchids growing on the cork and cypress with moss eventually covering the areas in-between.

Does this make any sense?

Leaf Tail Gecko tank...orchid help??

Hey,
I have a Uroplatus lineatus, common name Lined Leaf-tail gecko. I want to create a planted tank for him and I was referred here from Vivarium Forums..
Just to let you know, I barley know ANYTHING about plants lol, so I'm going to need some major help.

I have a hexagonal tank, 2' high, 18" from any point side to side, and each panel is 10" wide.
My temps are fairly low, 70f-85f tops during the day but usally around the higher 70s. Night temps drop a bit lower. Humidity will be high, 70%-100% but tha is not constant. Misting the tank is usually at night.

As of now I have no lighting in my tank and would prefer to keep it that way but I could add lighting for sure. The tank is located by a window but it's on the shady side of the house. A couple of the other plants I was thinking of including were pothos and lucky bamboo, but I'm open to suggestions on that too...I have no idea what I'm doing!!
I want to create bioactive soil...HOW???

Lineatus are from Madagascar. Is/are there any orchids that fit into my specifications?

Thanks :)

Hi everyone!

I'm looking, in the future, to create my own orchid aquarium... I have some aquariums waiting in the basement so that's good.

I would like to know an easy and cheap way to make an orchid aquarium. I want to look realistic (not only orchids on display put more like a miniature landscape).

What material do I need?

What orchids (on a limit budget) could I put in?

I would also like to have a mounted orchid in it. So how do I mount an orchid ? On a rock or on a piece of wood??

Thanks for your answers!!

Hi all, I am a new member. I keep a few orchids, but I spend most of my garden hobby time with my planted aquariums.

I have several planted ripariums, which are aquariums filled part of the way with water, with air space above for the emergent growth of plants. These look a lot like a similar idea, paludariums, which are sort of like a terrarium/aquarium hybrid, but they don't have any real land area--the above-water part is rendered just with plant foliage.

Here are some pictures from a few of my tanks.

55 Gallon Riparium Featuring Cryptocoryne

Cryptocoryne plants (also known as "crypts") are among the most popular of aquarium plants. This Riparium has some larger-statured species/varieties growing as emergents, as well as a few fully-immersed crypt plants. Fish include Botia locahes and Puntius barbs.

65 Gallon South America Biotope Riparium

This one is a rather loose "biotope". It contains some representative South American plants, such as Echinodorus swords, as well as others used primarily for their form and appearance, such as the Acorus sweetflag.

I also have a couple of orchids in this one, a phrag and a Spiranthes odorata. I have a strong interest in researching more orchids that can grow inthis "wet feet" style of culture.

I have an exo terra (60 x 45 x 60 cm) that I have set up with prime agra on the bottom, screen, and some bark and moss on top of the screen. I have an Exo terra canopy with two fluorescent lights and two PC fans in the back running 24/7. I also have a misting system set for 8 seconds three times a day almost everyday. The top of the terrarium only has a mesh lid, so to prevent the moisture from leaving, I put some saran wrap over the part of the top that is still open.

I used to have a warm growing Masdevallia strobelii, Angraecum didieri, Sophronitis cernua, Christensonia vietnamenica, Bulbophyllum putidum, Haraella odorata , Nanodes schlechterianum, and an Aeranthes grandiflora. A lot of these were taken out or died from being too dry. The terrarium has a humidity of around 60-80% and temperature between 29 and 21C. The bottom is usually filled with at least 3 inches of water, which is all in the level on the prime agra. Now, as the water is evarporating, there is a level of crust or buildup on the bottom of the tank which is very ugly. I feel like maybe the tank humidity isn't high enough, but not sure. I even had some air plants, tillandsias, and some even died in there. I am a bit lost and feel like giving up with this thing!
Do you all also have to water your plants individually as well? I had to keep watering my plants in there even with the mister and the humidity and even some plants died when I got lazy and forgot to water. Can someone provide some advice? I think there might be some pics of it when it was initially started in my gallery or in my older posts.

Hello, i deployed a couple of 3" pc fan @5v in my 20 gal horripilarium but now i can see all spikes rocking because of the the air flow.
The RO is bout 80% but i'm still afraid they may dislike it.
Should i try to direct the air flow somewhere else? Maybe it's more usefull at ground level on pots?

Also should i just leave one fan instead of two? Do they need a proper flow or it's just about dont leave the air totally still?

PS: what RO should I aim to?

:hello
Couldnt sleep much last 2 nights thinking bout solution for my vivarium project:biggrin:
Here is what i've done in these 2 days:

Here is the link to high resolution slide show

They are just two plastic box mesuring 60x40x28 and mounted togheter they take 56x38x54 maximum, containing around 100 liters (25 gall).
I keep them stacked and almost sealed very easily because i've trimmed some of their own cover plastic that fits perfectly;) (you can see that on the next pic on the right and on the left)
On the middle there are a couple of 8cm (3") fan, powered by an old nokia charger, 5v 0.8A. They both push air downward, should i care to make the air flow indirect for plants? Having the same temp and RO I supposed it's just fine.

I didnt want to put 220v inside because of humidity so i made 2 holes and screwed lighting bulbs trough. At the moment I'm taking care of reflecting light.

As you can see on the left ther's a mysterious white-covered glass bottle, supposed to carry cooking oil. Using a 50liters(13gallon)/h air pump with relative porous stone i push air inside without compromising but increasing humidity.
I've choosed this container because white part inibits algae but you can still see trought to check the water level.
I've got this idea from Sponges and Misters: Imagine Tropic-Aire Terrarium Huidifier & Air Exchanger - PETdiscounters.com but i still gotta see if it works better than my old fan-over-wet-clay-pellets humidificator;)

As you can see my luxometer says 3500 lux:((
inside there are 25w, warm (2700k), 1500 lumens bulb and a 13w, cold, 850 lumen bulb.
So I've 2350 lumens spreading on 0.24 square meters, it should be 10000 lux!....Too far from the truth :( Gotta find a way to reflect light efficently!!!

Think I've said enought-too much. Now it's time for advice please!

PS: total has been 52.7€ including pretty everything you see inside

Jason Woodrue helped quite a bit with the woodwork. I'm attempting to cover up one shelf with a layer of mossy moss. Jason, what is the name of the plant you gave me?

I am being given a 75-gallon aquarium, and I am hoping to create a vivarium with day geckos and orchids (and a few other plants, such as maidenhair fern). I have never kept geckos, so I'll be starting with the beginner's Phelsuma laticauda laticauda. I have a few orchids in my kitchen garden window over gravel trays. Some of them are not very happy, so I'm hoping to move them into the vivarium. I read the sticky on appropriate plants, and will work with that as a basis.

However--can I plant orchids directly into soil or other substrate in the vivarium, or do they need to be in pots?

I'm so new at this that I don't even know all the right questions to ask. So---ANY help or tips will be very much appreciated!

Hi. I was thinking about setting up a greenhouse indoors under lights. I don't have a garden, so I have to be creative :) And I have to many orchids for my windows.

My thought was to put this greenhouse in my apartment.
It is a wall-greenhouse. Put up lightning and a fan inside.
Here in Norway the humidity is low for orchids, so it will be easy to control in a greenhouse indoors.

Do you have any thoughts about this?

I think it will be one hell of a terrarium ;)

This is the one I was thinking about.
However here in Washington you cant collect or get 99 percent so its a moot point for salamander keeping. I thought about putting some fish and plants int he bottom, and planting the top. Bromeliadsa nd tillandsias are some choices for the walls, Ill use soem emmersed growing aquarium plants like baby tears on the wet parts. I also have some live spagnum moss that I have been growing in there.
My husband was a sweetheart and got me a terrarium for mothers day. I have absolutely no experience with these things. I've been looking through the threads here and have learned a lot, but I'm confused about how to set this thing up. Can anyone point to the info I need?
I also need help figuring out the right kind of bulb to get for the hood (it's the compact top).
I need to find a site that can give me the info I need without pictures of reptiles as I have a severe phobia.
It's built of quartersawn white oak primarily. It has a computer fan mounted in the top for circulation{it really makes the leaves move around a bit} 2 grow lights, and a drip pan in the bottom. The top opens, and it has sliding glass doors for adjusting ventilation. I made a corian nameplate for the front of the case. And labeled it " Hortensia Minor.."little Garden" in Latin. It's designed to look something like a greek temple. And amazingly, it really works. The plants thrive in there.

Well, this weekend was the Ottawa Orchid Society show, and as I was volunteering there I was able to get in the night before it opened to the public. Needless to say, I headed straight for the vendors' area:biggrin:. One weekend, two dracula's (my first two) and a Masd. velifera (Caveat emptor, this one smells like rotting fish! Luckily, you really need to get your nose in it and take a couple sniffs before it really hits you.) later and I've thoroughly run out of room in my old terrarium. I'd been considering building a new one for a while, so this was the perfect excuse.

The measurements are approx. 4'x2'x1 1/2' (width x height x depth). I wanted to make sure that I'd have plenty of space for plants:evil:... The whole thing was made of scrap material I had lying around the house and parts from the old terrarium, so the entire terrarium was constructed for $0. It's not meant to be elegant; functionality was my main concern here. Humidity is maintained at about 87% by a layer of water at the bottom of the terrarium and a 4" computer fan on the floor blowing air down towards the water. Temps seem to be about 65F nights (or at least evenings, I haven't gotten up in the middle of the night to check on it) and 74F days. I'll know for sure this weekend when I'll be able to check it regularily throughout the day to see what kind of conditions are going on in there.

Construction was pretty simple, I just tacked and glued together a frame from OSB scraps and lined it with vapor barrier plastic. My false bottom is a shelf from a shelving unit in my garage, and my mounted plants are being held up by a couple of pieces of wire mesh tacked to the walls. The whole setup is under a shelf (which I'm growing a few more 'chids on), so my next job is to suspend my light source (two 38W cool-white fluorescent tubes) from that.

But now, the moment I'm sure you've all been waiting for, the pictures!

:hello:waving
Okay so I have about 8 orchids - not too many but enough that the table i was using is getting too crowded.
I have been looking for another piece of furniture that would be able to accomodate my babies and more babies in the future:D, but haven't found anything yet.

I went to walmart a few nights back and had a peak in the seasonal department and saw a grow rack. Its fairly inexpensive at $50.00 last year I swear they were $100 or more. I think it would be perfect and it would keep the humidity levels up as I live in an apartment and it is usually quite dry.

What does everyone think....worth it or just a waste of money? Any suggestions are welcome!!

Hi terrarium growers!

I was wondering how you all deal with drainage and water buildup. I have egg crate lining the bottom of my tank, but with several misting cycles a day, I do get quite a bit of water build up and it's reaching the point where the water level is creeping above the egg crate. It has also grown nasty algae which needs to be removed.

I'm wondering how drainage is setup in all your tanks, and whether you have an automated system for periodically draining the tank (ie some sort of pump system), or whether you do big cleans every few months in which you remove everything and drain the tank. I'd prefer not to have to take everything out of the tank to drain it, but it's a top-opening tank and so it's the only way so far.

:dunno:

Hello all. I'm opening this thread to share what I've done so far (or plan to do), and also to begin a thread to use for future updates and question.

Feedback and suggestions are most welcome!

My first project is a 35 gal hexagon terrarium.
I used to keep some fresh water fish, and after months of sitting empty, I decided to clean it out and turn it into a display for a few orchids. From the original setup, I have kept the lid (has about a 3-4" wide strip of open space along the back panel), the undergravel filter (I figure this will make a great base for a dry well setup, and one of the filter air pipes. With the pipe I believe I can refill the water in the dry well using a watering can without splashing anything directly on the flowers/foliage/roots.

I have replaced the 15" flourescent hood (I couldn't find a 15" full spectrum tube at the local shops) with a CFL hood that uses screw in bulbs, which are easier to find in varying intensities. I have covered the filter top with some black polished stones (although I think I need more just to dress the layer a bit.). I have also wired an 80mm variable speed computer case fan to an AC adapter that I can hang inside for circulation. Right now the metrics are holding at about 70% humidity (compared to my 46% room humidity), and 75 F during the day, and high 60's at night. This is without the fan at the moment; I haven't made a hanger for it yet.

I also plan to wrap the back half in aquarium background (probably simple black) to dress it a bit.

The other is a 48 gal tall aquarium.
This one I plan to leave open top. I don't have a good hood or fixture for it, so I'll build an framework across the top and install a ballast for CFL tubes. I'll be able to house a wider variety of plants in this one. It will also be set up with case fans (90mm) and a dry well for humidity.

I'm still selecting plants at the moment. Some common breeds are top of the list; paphs, phals, cattlenya, phragmapedium. I'm a bit concerned about spike height though. I may have to keep myself to compact/miniature strains. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I have about 20" from surface to lid to work with.

Hey All,
Built an orchidarium out of a 29 gallon aquarium I had in the garage. Just the basics. Egg crate all around with the bottom coverd with window screening to keep from getting my drain plugged. Drilled a hole in the glass for the drain hose (I thought this would be difficult, it wasn't with a diamond crusted bit). Hung a small coralife fan inside to keep the air moving. No misting system yet, however I enjoy watering my orchids anyway. Get to look them over often this way. Mistking system will be ordered when I can. The light fixture is made out of two mailboxes and holds three large CFLs (85 watts each). I am going to monitor the enviroment for a day or two before I put the kids in. After being on for 12 hours I am maintaining 90%+ huidity, 87-90 degrees at the top, and 78 to 83 degrees on the bottom. Need to add better venting to let fresh air in and drop the temps some. Will get on that tomorow. Posted the basic idea of my homemade light reflector under the "Growing Under Lights" section. Can't wait to move my minis into their new home.

:) So I've had this tiny tank around for about 10 years, set it up at one point as a seahorse tank and then it was a mini saltwater reef. I think the tank is 10 gallons. The light fixture is equiped with two 18 watt compact flourescents (The bulbs are going to be upgraded ;).) There is a 4" CPU fan blowing air downward in the left front corner. The bark at the bottom is non-heat treated fine fir bark. The chicken wire is..well...chicken wire .:chicken All of the moss used was either frog moss that I bought a lps or some I purchased on ebay a while back in anticipation of this project. The plants are:

Phal. Lovely Kid
Den. leonis
Masd. regina 'Parkside'
Ceratostylis senelis
Barbosella cogniauxiana
Trisetella hoeijeri
Trias picta
Trias nasuta
Masd. amaluzae
Restrepia antennifera
Lepanthopsis astrophora

We put our little rain forest on the kitchen counter for now. Sorry the end result photos aren't that great...I'll post some better ones later. Enjoy!

The owner is using a fogger to moisture the orchids. The lattice shelves inside are installed vertical, so the mounted orchids can hang on it. A small ventilator is moving the air inside and an other one is blowing fresh air inside. On the top are installed T5-lamps for additional light.

I found, it's a good idea.

Orchidarium for cool growing orchids- my ideas about solving the temperature problem

Today is the second day my cool orchidaium is working successfully. I will share my solution for the low temperatures problem. I must underline that...

Today is the second day my cool orchidaium is working successfully. I will share my solution for the low temperatures problem. I must underline that I am not a technicaly skilful person .
The case:
I bought a second-hand vertical refrigerating showcase with a wide temperature range: from minus 30 to plus 30 degrees. The showcase height is almost 2 meters, as the usable part is about 150 centimeters (the compressor is below)
Somewhere I had a picture of the showcase in its original form, but I cannot find it .....
My changes to the showcase :
- The fan is bound to work independently
- The show case had 2 vertical luminescent lamps 1.2 meters each, they were replaced with Philips series for plants
- I added to the top 4 more luminescent lamps 2x15W (Silvania, a series for plants) and 2x7W (white light)
- the showcase was covered with wall-paper imitating natural material (sackcloth)
- there are metal bands on the door, along the the vertical lights in order to reflect the light.

I plan to put some matte wall paper on the bottom of the door in order to hide the drainage and irrigation system (you'll see on the picture)

Interior :
- All items are from Epiweb. I used a hot air gun to make different shapes, branches nad lianas from the epiweb .After heating epiweb becomes soft and pliable, processing it in any form is not a problem.
- I uzed 2 layers of waterproof material to create something like a second false bottom. I added a framework and two diagonals from metal perforated tape for stability. The false bottom has a slope to the inner wall. The lowest point has an opening that is attached to a drainage tube.
- The vertical part: The 3 walls are covered with the same waterproof material (not cutting). It is is longer than the height and goes inside the false bottom .

Irrigation system :
There are two courts (one is used as overflow) on the floor of the showcase , under the false bottom. Inside is an aquarium pump . Using hoses, angles, etc. I made a framework which is placed on the upper edge of epiweb. There are series of small holes along the hoses from which water runs down the walls. There is a pipe with holes inside the big liana, which is connected to the hoses of the frame..The pump and the lights are on timers.

Plants:
-Dracula s
-masdevallias
-telipogon
-lemboglossum
Several bromeliads .The walls are covered with a mixture of spores of sphagnum and Kyoto moss

I will add several more orchids at the top part :)
Temperature regime for the moment: 17-18 degrees daily temperature and 8-10 degrees night temperature. Lights are on from 8 to 21. The pump is working 3 times a day for 2-3 hour cycles.

Hello all,

I am growing South American cool cloud forest miniatures in a 55 gallon aquarium, in a cool basement. During the day, I heat using 2 infrared lamps outside of the tank, which brings the internal temperature +/- 15 degrees above the room temperature.

At night, the temp drops below the 55 degree suggested minimum for the plants when the lamps are not in use.

Question:

Can I use the infrared lamps through the night to stay above the 55 degrees without concern for the light the plants are getting? Can infrared light damage the plants?

I've seen the "blacklight" version of the heat lamp bulb. Is this a possiblity?

Thanks alot for any help- you can give.

Tim

I'm planning to start up a terrarium - a tropical set-up, 20 gallon tank, mostly orchids but a few ferns and other plants. The problem is that some of the orchids really need a dry/cool period to flower, and others don't. I'm wondering if the warmer-growing orchids can tolerate a cooler and drier winter period (for instance, around 65-70F). Here are the orchids I'm considering:
Dendrobium aggregatum
Haraella odorata
Ludisia discolor
Mediocalcar decoratum
Phal. schilleriana, violacea, or other small phals
Paph delenatii
Bulbophyllum frostii x dentiferum

I'd really like a phal species and a paph/phrag species, but if the ones I've suggested aren't suitable and there are better ones, that would be great to know too.

Also, I've been having a hard time finding out sizes. If anyone knows that certain of these are too large, I'd be happy to know.

Oh boy, am I ever in trouble! I found myself a 90 gallon glass aquarium yesterday on cragislist. :cheer:

I'll be doing a ton of reading here in the terrarium section as I've got a lot to learn. I'm not going to be able to start out super fancy. I have no pumps, misters, or fans yet. I do have a small "personal" desk fan which I can temporarily rig up to get circulation going... and I've got a small indoors fountain I think I can stick in there to help with humidity a bit. That combined with misting by hand should do the trick until I can get more sophisticated!

Those of you tank pros, what would be the top suggestion for me? I'm starting from scratch here, but do need to keep it simple for now. I'm planning on putting the more humidity loving 'chids there, some mounted, some potted. Possibly seedlings for the time being.

The tank was being stored outside, so has some mineral buildup that needs to come off, and I need to sterilize it good I'm sure. I'm working on that today in the back yard since it's simply beautiful! Hopefully it will be in the house and ready for 'chids tonight or tomorrow.

I'm so seriously stoked about this! :dance13:

Well, I'll start off by showing what the tank used to be, a Paludarium. (w/ a few fish, cherry shrimps and cories in the water)

Here it was way back maybe a year ago.

I decided to convert it into a vertical tank since I didnt have much vertical space with this 40gal breeder. So I tore it down several months ago and threw most of the plants away especially that creeping fig. That thing covered my tank! I saved the broms and tillys and put them in a separate tank.

After a lot of reading, research and planning. I Started on the conversion.

I sketched it out on Google's sketchup software. First, I had to tackle the cabinets that I had to build to fill both sides of the viv and the top. I didnt want all that extra space to go to waste.

With my excitement and busy schedule I forgot to take construction pics of the cabinets and the viv itself :(

The two on the sides are regular cabinets made from plywood. Cut them with a circular saw, sanded, glued and nailed together, painted and stained them.

The one on the top is where I mounted my AHsupply lights from the old Paludarium.

So here's what the viv looked like after it was all done.

I siliconed tree fern panels on the background along with some cork barks. I filled the gaps with Great stuff and covered that with concrete binder mixed with peat moss. Oh and i smeared some mushed up aquasoil mixed with sphagnum moss on the fern panels. That's what that brown mud is on the back wall.

I decided to go with a Euro style vents at the bottom. I used Lexan to make it since it's easier to drill holes through it for my drain and so I can run my misting and fogger underneath the false bottom. (I have a more close up pics of the vent if you scroll down some more)

The driftwood in the center is from the old Paludarium, I just had to saw off some of it's branches since they were too long.

I ran the misting tubes under the false bottom and behind the tree fern panels, then I silicone it to the top of the viv. I just used regular misting nozzle from homedepot. I dont need the more expensive nozzles to water the plants. I also installed a valve so I can control how much water is getting pumped out of the nozzles.

The tubing for the fogger also went underneath the false bottom and up the right side of the viv, behind the cork bark and tree ferns. Then I siliconed it behind the black trim of the tank in the front. It's hard to see it. I'll show you more pics of it later. I also installed a shut off valve on this so I can control the amount of fog coming out of the tubes.

So here's the viv back on the stand with all the cabinets on it.

Here's a more close up pic of the vent with all the tubes and fans(the fans arent point straight forward, they're tilted up, I just put the covers on the back like that to prop them up) hooked up.

Here's some close up pics of the top just incase you were wondering on what I did with the top vents.

I didnt like the look of the screen door type of ventilation. It didnt look 'clean' enough for me. So I cut a piece of Lexan, grab my boring bit and bored five 1 3/4" holes. I cut out some screening in circles, went and got some black rubber gaskets and siliconed them on the holes. Im really pleased on how it turned out :D

The front of the viv is one big piece of glass I cut out. I didnt want to use Lexan since I scratches so easily. I drilled two small holes on the sides and screw in small piece of lexan to lock the glass door in place

The substrate I used is a mixture of peat moss+perlite+sphagnum moss+orchid bark

I just ordered a Lepanthes ovalis and a Haraella odorata from Andy's orchids, with the intention of creating a mini-terrarium. Both of these species should do well at cooler temperatures, high humidity, and lower light. I have a perfect place for a terrarium that needs shady conditions, right beside my aquarium. Since I'm a newbie (and yes, I know the Lepanthes is going to be difficult and finicky), I thought I would stop in here and run my thoughts past you all.

I'm going to get a small humidity monitor - the kind used for reptiles, so that I can be sure that I am keeping the humidity high... 85-95% I am thinking?
I haven't decided exactly what size of container I am going to use - I'm trying to decide if I should get it and set things up now to be sure they are stable before I get the plants, but that would mean risking getting something too small.

I plan to put rock - either those glass stones or lava rock - as the bottom two inches or so. This way, if there is standing water in the bottom, nothing alive is down there to start rotting. The rock will be covered by a layer of spagnum moss. Both plants will be arriving mounted on cork, and for the time being I don't plan to change that.

Within such a small space, air movement may be hard to create at moderate levels, but I plan to jury-rig a small motor (or maybe even some clockworks) to provide it. Experimentation may be necessary to get things perfect.

Does this sound do-able? Am I missing something important? Or something minor?

Thanks in advance!

During the economic struggles you can find awesome deals on little things that before were just to expense. Original this Little Greenhouse was going for $487 and to my luck the store was closing and they had slashed prices. I wasn't sure if I had the money to buy it so I ask the lady for a card and told her that I would call about it later. So after some careful thinks I decide to go for it. I thought what a wonderful little home it would make for my orchids and we arranged to buy it. It was funny picking it up because we were behind the mall exchanging money for this greenhouse. To me it look a little suspicious dealing behind the mall. I ended up only paid $150 with no Tax. One of the best deals I have ever gotten.

I have a 75 watt plant light from Home depot on the top and the bottom I have a soft white fluorescent. I would like to get a better light for the bottom, but it seems to be doing ok. In the top part of the greenhouse almost all the plants have started new leafs and I am glad they are settling into there new home.

I hope you all enjoy my little Orchid greenhouse and I show have some blooms to share in a couple of weeks.

Hi everyone!
I've been trying to do some research on fertilizers to use on orchids growing in tanks. I have a number of orchids growing in a tank...I'm not sure what kind of fertilizer to use!

I hear fish emulsion is good, but everyone seems to have very different opinions.

My orchids are mostly mounted on cork or tree fern in sphagnum.

What do you use for fertilizer?

Many thanks! :blushing:

Hi Everyone

I am about to launch into an experiment in cooling a wardian case of sorts. That is I have a 150 gallon fish tank that I am going to slap a lid on, and try to cool. My apartment gets to 35c in the day during the hot season. I am aiming for a temperature of 20c to 22c.

I am going to try Martin's idea using the computer water cooled radiator to cool the case with an aquarium chiller to chill the water as it is thermostatically controlled. http://www.cpukforum.com/forum/index...howtopic=28146

Its not going to be pretty, and is only a temporary measure, as my goal is to preserve 4 lepanthes /flasks until I leave Thailand for home next year.

I am going post pics and comments as I go in a new thread... Stay tuned. I am off to shop for parts as of the weekend.

Here is a picture of the Hailea Aquamedic chiller that I will use to cool water in a small tank, that will then be pumped throught the fan blown radiator. I am using a chiller as it will drop the water temperature to a stable level and give me more control that a fridge.
Hailea Aquamedic HL-880 CA
Titanium tube and use Mitsubishi compressor
Input Power : 1 HP
Ice Media R 134a
Pump : 1200-3000 L/Hr
Size : 48.5 X 41.5 X 44 cm

Hello all! I posted a similar thread in the wrong forum and didn't get any response, so figured I'd re-post under Terrarium Gardening.

I recently acquired a very lightly-used Grand Cayman Orchidarium for a ridiculously low price that I couldn't pass up. Now I understand that "orchidarium" might be a dodgy word on the board these days, but this is the "real" thing, so I assume it's okay to talk about it.

I'll be setting this thing up over the weekend and hope to shift my whole collection of 'chids (about 75 plants) off my baker's racks and into it. I've got Catts and Laelias, lots of Bulbos, some latouria Dendrobiums, Dendrochilums, Tolumnias, a few supposedly warmth-tolerant Masdies, some Angraecoids, and about a dozen species Phals and Paphs. Lots of these are mounties. Couple of quick questions, for those who may have this or similar models: do you leave the fans on 24/7 to dry out plants after watering, or do you rather try to strike a balance between higher humidity and better circulation? Do you find you water less? My primary reason for switching is so that I can go away on weekends and not make friends and family responsible for daily care. Also, any maintenance tips/tricks would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks! :bowing

Circulation vs. Humidity

Well, I've got my 75 gallon orchidarium up and running, and everything's doing pretty well. For those who haven't seen the tank itself, you can look at this thread, here:

http://www.orchidboard.com/community...chidarium.html

When I had everything in the Exoterra, I had one fan, and it was turned on as low as I could get it with a Zoo Med rheostat. Now in the larger tank, I added another fan, and have turned them up to near full power. Especially after coming here, and reading how important it is for orchids to dry between waterings (for the most part, and with exceptions). However, with the fans on, the humidity is around 50%, dropping into the 40%'s by morning (I only spray once in the morning, as the lights come on). However, today I meddled with wires, and the fans were off for about 2 hours...this allowed the humidity to climb to the mid-high 80%'s.

So, would a period of this high humidity be preferable? Perhaps turn the fans off during the night to allow nighttime humidity to climb like it would normally? Or should I just keep it going as I have been? If so, what would be the ideal schedule for this raised humidity? Thanks!

Welcome all,
I have been looking around at a lot of enclosed setups around here and I was inspired to try and make one of my own.
I started out with the 24" x 18" x 24" exo terra tank and made an acrylic top to fit where the screen was. I am thinking of mounting the 4" variable speed fan on the acrylic top with bolts and maybe 2" spacers to keep the fan away from the top. Any thoughts on which direction the fan should face or fan location?
I have 2' T5 4 bulb fixture I plan on using for the light source, I currently only have 1 bulb for it. Any good links for cheap replacement bulbs would be much appreciated.

Heres a pic of the tank and top I made

And here is a pic of my fan, it goes from 50 cfm to 100 cfm depending on temperature.

Thanks for checking out my thread, any advice or questions will be much appreciated. Last pic is where I am currently at. I still have no idea what orchids to put in it, way too many options. I am thinking of maybe starting a miniature orchid collection, but I am going to have to wait a while on more orchid purchases for now.

I am in the process of setting up my Exo Terra 24"x18"x24" Orchidarium. I have read and learned many tips from forum members. I plan on using plastic lighting egg crate as a platform with either Hydroton or lava rock either under or over the egg crate. If I use it under, I will use some PVC pipe slices for the crate to rest on. If I put the rock over the crate I plan on puting a piece of plastic screen over the crate before adding the rock. What I don't understand is why the need for an elevated platform with unused space under the crate? What is the rationale for not having the egg crate or what ever platform lying right on the bottom of the tank? Why the air space? If your tank has a fan and good ventilation why? I'd appreciate some answers so I can decide what's best.

And now thanks to my new mist fogger, I can get the humidity to to go into the 70's throughout the day and night. Also, because its next to a window, and since the tank is open the air circulation is unbeatable.

In the summer time, the tank is located next to an airconditioner which is capable of bringing the temperature of the room down into the 60's at night. I think I can do this.

This is a repost from a frog forum, but I figured I'll post it here too. I'm still waiting for some miniature orchids and some carnivorous plants to put into this tank. It's still fresh and has very little new growth.

I've redone my 90 galon diamond viv. After few years of service, the tree fern panels fell apart on me. I decided to build it to last forever. I used epiweb and mortar. Here are some pics of the process

I cant seem to find the early photos, so I'll start with the epiweb already glued to the glass with aquarium silicone. Some black foam is already on.

This tank is not drained. Prior to this setup I had to disconnect the filter and siphon off a bit of water when the level was getting too high. I decided to use a spare pump and tap into the canister filter and pump off the excess water directly into the house plumbing. Now when I need to get rid of some water I just flip a switch. Actually, I have it rigged on a timer, idea is to turn it on daily for say 20 sec to pump off the extra water automatically.

I hate false bottoms. For this setup I used epiweb chunks as a substrate. It will also act as a filter. Landscaping fabric on top. YOu can see the water area forming.

Didn't want the front to show epiweb, so I jammed some aquarium gravel in the front of the tank.

Part of the plants from Antone of Spring Valley Tropicals. All plants arrived in great shape. Anton was a pleasure to deal with!

Front Pannel with all the controls. Timers are visible when the cabinet door is open. These switches control the following: viv lights, cabinet light, waterfall (filter), heater, drain pump, air bubbles in the water, misting system and the fans... Timers are used for the drain pump, misting system and the lights. It was a pain to set up and organize the wire jungle, but it's a lot of fun operating the viv from the pannel.

Vivarium has been planted for about 1 week. Broms are dropping roots already.

I don't want to use and java moss nor any other moss for that matter. I'm going to experiment with riccia only. I got bunch of riccia from Brian of Brian's Tropicals. It arrived in perfect shape. Brian is very easy to deal with.

This is the fresh tank after about 7-10 days. I still need to add few more plants and wait for everything to overgrow. I'm waiting for some miniature orchids. Right now there is a group of 8 leucs roaming around the viv.

Few pics of the occupants - Leucs
I have just come across your interesting set-up for Orchid growing and like what you have done...There is one bit of contention I must raise though...it can not be called an "Orchidarium" My brother and I trademarked that name in 1994 when we formed Orchidarium Inc.
We have invested many years and efforts to establish the name and would expect that our customers would be confused to see your construction and think it was one of our models. We have had the web site orchidarium.com since 1995. I am sure you meant no injury, and I assure none is taken, but we have to protect our trademark or we can loose it. Others have done the same, always by innocent intent. Any other name would be good. I thank you for your attention.

Hello all. I'm new to the forums here, and figured I'd start out with a picture of my old and new setup. Also, this is my first time using this thumbnail feature, so I hope I get it right.

First, the old setup. it's a slightly modified 18 x 18 x 24 Exoterra, with a 96W Coralife Aqualight 6700K powerquad PC fixture for lighting. It also has a small circulation fan hooked up to a dimmer switch for gentle circulation.

Obviously, I was out of space. So, I got a 75 gallon to take its place. This has 2 circulation fans, one on each front upper corner for circulation, and 2 2x64W 48" Coralife Aqualight 6700K PC fixtures, for a total of 256W of compact fluorescent lighting. The bulbs are a little old, and need to be replaced, but they will work for the time being. The right half also has a layer of window screening under the lights for shading. This will probably be doubled when I switch the bulbs.

First, in construction:

And now, the finished (so far) product. Needs more plants!

Ny second orchidarium is a small aquarium.

After spending days reading this topic, I decided to take the plunge and convert a 55 gal aquarium to my new Orchid terrarium.

I have got 2 T8 tubes with full spectrum lighting. The background was reused from the aquarium. I converted a computer fan and it is running 24/7. In one corner, I bought a tabletop fountain to help with the humidity. After running it a few days, realized I needed more so purchased a fogging system that works great. I only need to run it a few minutes every other day.

My temps are running 75-84 degrees with a humidity rating of 80-95. I hung an old curtain rod in the back to hang my mounted chids and its working well. I covered an opening in the top with plastic but still have a small 2" circular hole on the top on each side. Don't seem to loose much heat through these so will not cover them at this point.

I ordered alot of jewel orchids from Rob's Little Frog Farm and I was every pleased with them when they arrived today. They are very nice plants. I plan to order more when the weather warms up some.

As the pics show, I have room for alot more. The cork board on the sides is temporary or I may hang some mounted orchids off them, too. I have really enjoyed doing this and couldn't have done it without all the great advice I have found on this site.

More work to be done and many more plants to be found for it but I'm loving every minute!! Hope the pics turn out.

Well I am new here and totally new to the idea of terrium based plant growing. Starting to get to many fish/lizard tanks in the house and randomly ran across this website (particularly this section) and am intrigued by the thought (and feat) of growing a few small orchids in a terrium.

The setup seems pretty easy using a raised shelf over some sort of absorbant substrate. I am already familar with heat/humidity issues but am wondering if someone could point out the main points in a terrium based grow attempt.

As I stated earlier I know pretty much zero about growing these plants but I think it is an interesting task with beutiful results.

Any info on easy starters for this setup idea/lighting tips would be great. After learning the hard way one to many times I dont just want to jump into this and realize I meesed up and have to start over.

Cheers!

Last month when Dana got her Orchidarium while visiting with me, I talked my husband into giving up his fish so I could take over the tank. It's a 50 gallon tall tank, 36 inches wide.

I've been working on putting together a centerpiece for it and have finally completed the task! (/udb)

Right now, the temps are showing 72, I have two fans in there and T5 lights. I'll make adjustments as needed.

These are the plants that now reside inside:

Den tetragonum
Den tetragonum var. giganteum
Phal lobbii
Phal pulchra
Phal cornu-cervi
S cernua*
Pths teres (2)
Bulb Frank Smith
L. reginae
Bulb Jersey
Bapt echinata*
L sincorana
Ccs rubra
Bulb ambrosia*
Angcm leonis*
Bulb odoratissimum
Psh radiata
Aergs rhodosticta
Lpt bicolor
E polybulbon
Bulb Melting Point*
Lepanthopsis astrophora 'Stalky'
Tris hoejerii
Tolu sylvestris*
Masd veitchiana 'Prince de Galle' x Masd princeps
Masd Redwing 'Rolfe' HCC/AOS x masd princeps
Mystacidium capense
(Mystery Project Cool grower)

The six with an asterisk* are on a test-run. If I see signs of their not being happy, I'll remove them.

Here are some pics of the process and then the final outcome. I started out thinking I had 14 that I could take from my existing collection...and that number turned into 29 today!

The back of the tank is mirrored, making it difficult to get a really good picture :(
:crossfing
