I'll admit that at first, I didn't think highly of orchids. I used to be among the people that thought they were fussy, temperamental plants that only the plant expert could grow. I also thought of them as being something of a luxury, because they were so expensive. My dendrobium changed that. When I bought it, it was a sickly, half-off plant that I didn't think too much of. I bought it thinking it wouldn't do well; I had the "what the heck" mentality and figured it would perish because it was already in decline. I didn't know too much about orchids at the time, mind you, so the only clues I had about its culture were on a care card that was attached to the plant. I followed the instructions on the card, and put the plant in a sunny spot in my room. It wasn't a month before the plant began to bloom with gusto, almost as if to thank me for rescuing it. I couldn't help but be amazed at the flowers, which lasted about six months before fading. I was just as surprised when the plant rebloomed and grew the following year. The plant continues to grow and bloom to this day, becoming stronger and more vibrant with every passing year. It reinforced the old adage about not judging a book by its cover, and taught me that things are not as bad as they seem, no matter how bad they may look.
Recently, my plants taught me another lesson during a wind storm. This time, they taught me about teamwork.
I had my plants arranged such that there was a considerable distance between them. The wind wasn't slow to knock them all over, and I was frustrated when I'd put them back up only to have the wind knock them over again. I didn't have any way to hold them upright, and I had no choice but to bring them in so they wouldn't roll off my balcony. I couldn't figure out how to keep them upright in the strong wind until I noticed that two of my plants were keeping each other from flopping on my countertop. It turns out that the only way they could stand up was if they supported one another. I took them outside and placed them close to each other, leaf to leaf and pot to pot. When I finally put them close to each other, the wind could not knock them over, no matter how strong it blew. The orchids braved the heavy wind in stride. In a way they were telling me, "See? We can't do it alone. We need each other."
Of course, they've taught me a lot more than this about life. But instead of sitting here and posting every story from the last seven years, I'll say this. Pay attention to your plants. They might be telling you something that you might not realize they're telling you. ;) ]]>

After consuming the contents and rinsing it out, I use a large screw with a sharp point wrapped in duct tape to give me something smooth to grasp as I turn it into the bottom of the container for drainage holes. You could also place holes on the sides as desired.
The container has a recessed center on the bottom and is six-sided so I place six holes around the perimeter.
Then remove the plastic label and you have a 3" pot ready for that seedling or small chid who someday will grow up into a bigger pot!

I have had the best time in the past two days :cloud9:
I went to Mt Dora with my good friend LindaRoderick for the citywide plant fair. We arrived yesterday morning although the fair didn't start till this morning. We took the opportunity to take a leisurely stroll around a really beautiful quaint little town. It was lovely and we got some shopping done while in their downtown shoipping area.
This morning, we arrived at the fair and found that the first flower booths we came across were orchid vendors! YAY! :banana:
I came home from the fair with 3 Tillandsia (air plants, not orchids), 2 succulents (will have to find names :scratchhead: , a Ludisia discolor alba from EFG, a Den spectabile frm flavus 'Exotic Gold' x Den spectabile frm flavus 'Shortie' from OrchidsAmore, an Onc Twinkle 'Fragrance Fantasy', an Onc Twinkle 'Red, a Bulb Thai Spider and a blooming Cirr Elizabeth Ann 'Buckleberry' x Cirr Doris Dukes (these last 4 were from Prince Orchids. They had really nice stuff for great prices. They do not have a web site and the nice lady (Joy Prince) said they mostly do shows but will sell privately if she is contacted through email), a beautiful pot of Podocarpus that I got at an Bonsai stand (bought it for the pot but I've decided to leave it as is for a while), some little rubber frogs, some gorgeous mosaic animals (a lizard, a frog and a Boxer!), some worm tea from Our Vital Earth ( Our Vital Earth - All Natural Worm Castings, Worm Tea ), the cutest little planters (couldn't decide so I got 4 :coverlaugh: ), some gourmet doggie biscuits for my babies Sammi and Lucas and a couple of little gifts for laura's two grandsons :)
I arrived home to find that a package from a good OB friend got here yesterday about an hour after I left. My sweetheart of a hubby unpacked and misted 12 new chids!!! :love:
Tomorrow is repotting and playing in the orchid room day...can't wait :chicken ]]>

I do have several plants from these “store” sources, and sometimes you can find amazing things among the “usual suspects” (which these Phal’s are); but they are often a rescue project, even though they may be worthwhile plants.
Since all of these "store" plants have been forced to the max, even if not abused, I like to give them a little R & R after they are done blooming. With Phal’s, I always cut the spike, and don’t let them re-bloom out of the same spike. This gives them about a year to re-group before they bloom again. Often they will need re-potting, although these look O.K. to stay in thier pots another year.

The first is Aeridovanda Somsri Sunlight which reminds me of rainbow sherbert and has a light fruity fragrance...way too cute to pass it up :nono:
Next is Phal lamelligera which at first glance I thought was cornu-cervi...but my great friend Laura pointed out that it was something different and after one closer glance, I basically took it out of her hand :blushing:

When I mentioned to Bill Fajen that I had just purchased that one from his sale collection, he asked if I saw the "other" special Phal he had with him and I told him that I hadn't. He went to get this little 3" square of tree root with a couple of non-special leaves on it and when he saw that I didn't light up he smiled and lifted the leaves to expose two of these tiny little beauties.
I'm hoping to get Laura to photograph it with her much better camera because my picture does not show the minute detail in this one! Bill showed me a photo he had taken with better equipment (and more experience than me ;) ) and it shows two rows of what look like sharp teeth along the lip and it has fangs...I love it!
One look and it was mine :love:
I also picked up a mounted Slc Physchomanniana which is a lovely shade of pink but I can't get a good pic of it :( and I got a little seedling of a gorgeous tall blush colored Den (can't remember the name)
Laura got a few stunning Vandas today...one of them is the most amazing dark dark purple I have ever seen. I have to ask her to post a photo :drool:
All in all, a great day spent with a good friend...and orchids :cloud9:

]]>First let me tell ya, I've never been to one of the Davie Orchid Society shows. I just went to my first auction a couple of weeks ago and loved the deals they had there. Though I only got one orchid, I vowed to do more of these local auctions. But this Davie OS auction came out of the blue. I was unaware of it and had not planned on it, which means my wallet was empty.
So I went to keep my SIL company, but was pleasantly surprised. Not only were there many Florida species, of which I'm trying to acquire, but also some Tolumnias.
We got there at 8:05 and by 8:15, they were ready to start the auction. My SIL saw me eyeing some chids and when they came up, she nudged me and said she'll buy them for me.
So what would you do? I just went with it but was careful to not get out of hand. When bids got to high, even though I badly wanted them, I let them go.

As some of you know I love to hike and explore our wonderful planet. One of my overnight hikes in the Everglades, I set up camp in area that is normally underwater threw out the year. This particular year we were experiencing a drought and my buddy notice this plant attached to a tree. Not knowing anything about orchids I had know idea what it was, but my buddy said he thought it might be a orchid. Well a few years went by and we found our self's back in that same area, so we decided to check it out. To our amazement if was in full flower. Now I had to know what we found so I went online and found this great website. I joined so I could have someone ID it for me. I had such a great response that it became an addiction. The plant we found was a Cyrtopodium punctatum (cigar orchid).
Soooo thanks to the OB I now own over 200 orchids.:blushing:
I took a load of polystyrene peanuts from a delivery we had at work to use for a number of my chids which needed repotting. As I've now discovered a week later, it was eco-friendly (maize based?) stuff- so has all decayed, blocked my drainage holes and is now causing me more than a bit of a headache. For one of my finer potted chids it's also mixed in the medium, so I've wasted a pot load of good stuff for nothing. Plus, the time involved in repotting once more, and I'm going to have to put the pots through the wash to get the white goo off them.
Seriously. I'm all up for looking after our planet, but a little consideration from the packers to advertise their biodegradable packaging would have really helped here!!
So, moral of the story? If in doubt assume a delivery company's eco credentials are better than they really are. But only if wanting to reuse to care for a green growing thing. How perverse is that???!!!

Take a look at them. Their leaf spans are at least a foot and a half and they had over 3 feet long roots. Unfortunately, I had to trim them shorter to put them in my Vanda house.

I ordered a Vanda once last year and had a great experience of dealing with Smiley. After having made a list, checked it twice, and looked closely around my growing area, I realized that I only have room for TWO. :shock:

We had a little get together at Laura's place today and had a wonderful time together.
My day was made a bit more special by the chids I got from both of them :cloud9:
When Linda picked me up, she proceeded to pull a HUGE Gram martae out of her car for me (she had one in there for Laura too!)
The first two pics show the size of it, in what is probably a 12" pot...and is one quarter of the original plant! :shock:
While at Laura's, I commented on how pretty a Den was...and she told me to take it home! :cloud9:

Terrestrial species vanda is not as sensitivie to moist compare to those found in the wild. Often orchid enthusiast and orchid lover find it difficult in control of water feeding these vanda. Take caution and always bear in mind, unless the medium potting mix is totally dried out, if not do not water it again. Sometimes whereby weather in certain region gets colder and moist, vanda thrieve well even without you watering it for days.

The roots of the orchid also denotes it's current health and growing ability. When you see your plant with little or no new roots at the bottom, posibility are it do not have enough nutrient or might be suffering from some air or aquatic prone disease. Helathy orchids shall have on-going strands of white color versatile roots with an green-eye tip at the root end. You can trim down to maintain a neater outlook where possible.

My new plants are:

I ordered them from Olympic Orchids. They deal mostly in seedlings, so I'll have the fun of watching these guys grow and raising them to their first bloom. They came very well-wrapped, although two leaves had come off of the Masdie and some perlite had fallen out of the holes in the Milt. pot. These are all firsts for me, including the bonus plant. I ordered them for the climate at my home in western Washington, which is cool and humid. However, since my school year has started, they were shipped to my dorm in eastern Washington. My dorm room usually reaches 80 degrees, so I'll be keeping the humidifier going for the Masdie and the Milt especially.
Here's pics of my new babies! Sorry for any blurriness. I took the pictures pretty quickly. The Isabelia (4th pic, mounted) doesn't look like much in the picture, but it should eventually form an attractive, gold-netted mat.

The NY Botanical garden in the Bronx is 5 times larger [i think]. admission is 20 $ and wednesdays are free to access the ground bit not the conservatory.
in the hot and wet section I saw many Vanda alliance orchids in the conservatory. some had rootless keikis and were a great untangled mess. Surprised to have not seen any Dendrobiums and few Cattleyas.
Anyway there was a huge Grammatophylum speciosum and a a huge Schomburkia galeottiana.
I liked how the orchids were hanging freely with roots and keikis everywhere.
I was talking to this person that was saying they used to have a lot more - and they cleaned the place up/. less messy but also less plants.
Anyway saw a plant that looked had some sort of infestation. like tiny barnacle-like bugs and ants lurking around scale?
in the tropical section I saw a very nice Mango tree and coffee. a huge Vanilla planifolia vine [the tag mistakenly states it is the only orchid cultivated for vanilla]. some parts were driying up - made me wonder if some parts die and some branch out.
I liked the cacti/euphorbias section . convergent evolution. I was disappointed to not see any Holiday/Orchid cacti etc etc...
The store had really nice supplies. seems it caters more to the urban gardener while the store in the bronx seems to cater to the upscale wealthy interior decorator.
I got some nice /cheap hooks, found some lava rock, and super cheap 1 and 2 inch terracotta pots [29 to 49 cents each].
they had some cattleya kind on sale for 12 dollars... but no tag of any sort.
their plants had no tags. bought a tiny opuntia for 2 dollars but does not say what specie.
Anyway I liked their orchard/veggie garden and cherry trees. everything looks more natural than the NY botanical garden where there are spotless lawns trimmed perfectly and they use Martha Stewart and Mario Batali as testimonials for their edible and herb gardens that do not look like a real vegie garden

Previously, to publish a magazine you had to pay a large amount of money up front to meet the the minimum run requirements to achieve economy of scale. Now, with print on demand services such as with Magcloud there is no risk involved because there is absolutely no cost for the person publishing a magazine.
So let's explore the potential from the perspective of the orchid community...
Orchid Societies. In addition to offering their monthly newsletter via e-mail, orchid societies can also upload their monthly newsletter to Magcloud. Another possibility is that orchid societies in the same geographical region can pool their collective knowledge to publish a magazine for all orchid hobbyists in the same region. For example, there are around 14 orchid societies in Southern California. If every society submitted at least one article and a few photos...then you could throw in a few upcoming events, include a list of all the orchid societies in So Cal and you've got a pretty decent magazine.
American Orchid Society. The vast majority of orchid hobbyists are not members of the AOS due to the high cost of membership. The AOS cites the high cost of publishing its magazine to explain the high cost of membership. With Magcloud, the cost of publishing its magazine would be reduced to nothing...zip, zilch, nada...which would greatly reduce the cost of membership. Recently I corresponded with Magcloud about this possibility and they said that they plan to offer a service where the AOS could send them a list of members who wished to receive the printed magazine and Magcloud would ship the magazine to all the people on the list. The AOS could then put all their articles on their website. Currently, the AOS offers a little information to everybody (via its website) and a lot of information to a few people (via its magazine). With print on demand they could offer a lot of information to everybody.
Orchid Forums! Stickies, photo contests, article contests are all potentially great content for a magazine. The other day a friend in another society and I were talking about how difficult it is to try and encourage society members to join orchid forums. If you can't bring orchid society members to the orchid forums...then bring the orchid forums in magazine format to your society.
Orchid Hobbyists. Many orchid growers have a favorite area of interest within the orchid hobby. For example, my area of interest is epiphytic orchid species that can grow outdoors in nearly frost free climates. Others are interested in semi-hydroponics, miniature orchids, slipper orchids, native orchids, breeding orchids, orchid conservation...it's a long list! With Magcloud, orchid hobbyists with similar interests can publish a magazine dedicated to their area of interest.
Information is an essential part of our hobby. With Magcloud, it is completely free to publish a magazine that can help share valuable information with other orchid growers. ]]>

I'm finally recovered enough from my trip last July into the Fakahatchee with Mike as my guide to put a little story together along with a few photos. :D It was a really hot day, and we were out there for about 6 hours...:whew...it took me two days before I started to feel normal again...er...at least normal for me. :coverlaugh:
Here are descriptions of the photos:
- This is the main tram we walked down for about an hour before heading into the slough.
- One of the first orchids we came across was this blooming vanilla! It was kind of high in the tree, but you can still make out the photo pretty good.
- Here I am standing next to one of the first ghosts we came across...it wasn't blooming, but it was a pretty impressive set of roots...at least in my opinion.
- This orchid is a Prosthechea cochleata, with a nice bunch of seed pods that have already split open...hopefully the area will have a lot of babies in the coming months/years.
- Here's a close shot of another "classic" ghost root pattern, growing along with some resurrection ferns.
- Here I am taking a break from our hike, which we estimated was about 2 miles in off of the tram.
- And here is what we were hoping to find...a ghost orchid blooming away.
- Another photo of the ghost…we actually saw 3 others blooming, but they were either too far up in the trees to get a good photo, or too far gone to share here.
- This is a shot of my ankle protector covered in mosquitoes...there were literally thousands following us around looking for an area we forgot to spray...repeatedly...with deep woods Off...we used a whole bottle each! :yikes:
- And finally, here's a pic of Mike...after he went back to look for my tripod, which I left way back in the swamp during one of our rest stops. I told him not to worry about it...I simply didn't have any energy left for a trek back...but he was determined to see if he could find it. Oh well, he didn't get it...but at least he made it out in one piece. :)
It may be that I will be leaving the OB, and I wanted to say good bye to everyone before that happens.
I have had a lot of fun and have really enjoyed seeing everyones plants and getting involved in projects and other discussions. I just thought that you would all like to celebrate with me the fact that I am now the proud carer of thirty orchids in my home. Three are donations from non orchid friends who "got bored" with their Phals, three are duplicates as a result of propagation.
Here's to the next thirty!
Mind you I have a way to go before I catch myself up on the succulents and cacti front - I have 85 of those and I was supposed to be winding them down...........

In Bloom: (only a few)
Dendrobium laevifolium—5 blooms total on 2 bulbs, (the same blooms which opened up back in April/May!)
Maxillaria uncata—currently only has 2 little blooms, but it seems to pick up in the fall/winter to where there's always a new handfull of blooms opening every other week or so.
Phalaenopsis Baldan's Kaleidoscope—received in bloom as a gift in April and still going strong, though has lost two spikes as of now.
Phalaenopsis cornu-cervi—single bloom (it's first) which opened on 7/23. Totally my new favorite!
In Spike:
Ascocentrum pumilum (Intermediate mystery project plant)—just started the beginnings of two spikes. The spikes are *very* slow growing, so it'll be a while before blooms.
Bulbophyllum pardalotum—currently has 7 spikes after it blasted 4. Needed to move it to a place with less air movement, and am keeping it more moist than usual. Blasting seems to have stopped.
Cirrhopetalum tingabarinum (Warm mystery project plant)—just started the beginnings of a spike (and I'm sure of it this time!)
Haraella retrocalla (Spring 09 project plant)—just dropped two blooms from two different spikes, but those spikes are now pumping out another bud each.
(Laelia milleri x L. cinnabarina) x Sophronitis cernua—spike with 3, maybe 4, buds. Really excited for this one!
Leptotes bicolor—Finally. This guy has had some sheathed-over nubbins for a long time on various growths. One of them is finally pushing out a bud. Hoping that the others decide to follow suit!
Masdevallia (vargasii x triangularis)—Never thought I'd do so well with a Masdie. Currently has 6 new spikes with buds in various stages, in addition to 3 old spikes it's held onto that are still green.
Paphiopedilum Hsinying Alien—spike began growing at the end of June, and it continues. Excited because, while it has bloomed previously, this will be it's first bloom in my care, and my first Paph bloom period!
Phalaenopsis lobbii—beginnings of two tiny spike nubbins. Thrilled because this was just in bloom Feb-April.
Phalaenopsis Mini-Mark 'Holm'—this guy is amazing. Has one new spike. Also just finished two spikes in May.
Sigmatostalix costaricensis—very excited, received this as a TC with my Haraella project plant. It is now growing three spikes. Not seeing buds yet, but could start seeing them very soon I think.
Also looking forward to:
Laelia fournieri—currently is still expanding a new growth. But if what happened last year is any indication, it's leaf may start unfolding soon, with a spike already growing inside.
Laelia mixta—currently has one growth in sheath, with something inside. But I'm not sure what it's deal is. Seems to be content for awhile with pushing lots of new root growth.
Sophronitis cernua—just unfolded a new leaf, so crossing my fingers I might see spiking soon??

The Italian grower Knows a French Grower who always shows at the Orchid Show in the city of Orléans. He has a customer who comes every year, & who does everything to make sure he's always the first inside and that he has first choice..He's a cattleya fanatic... anyway for years the grower watched his customer and noticed that he would always pay for the Cattleyas and as he walked off, would then stop at the first ladies he met, would take a pair of scissors out of his pocket, cut a bloom off a plant and give it to the lady/ies...
He's a quite shy timid person but he finally decided to ask his client Why? he did this?
The client answered that he was building up quite a collection of Cattleyas in his greenhouse & that every time he went to shows his wife would then go & have a look in his greenhouse.. therefore his wife did not notice his new acquisitions and it avoided all conflict.
This put a smile to my face & I wondered about how many people do this???? ]]>
I just found out that there is an orchid show on in Bangkok this Friday to Sunday. The Thailand International Orchid Innovation Show. A rather grand title :biggrin:

I thought I'd try something different here, at least for me. :)
I have a personal website that I just updated...I don't sell anything or the like...it's just a fun site where I post a lot of photos and provide photo essays of things I've done. I also have a poll I do with each update that allows people to choose their favorite photo out of a grouping I put together...the one with the most votes gets posted on the home page the next time I update the site.
The reason I am bringing it up here is because most of my update this time around is orchid related. I wrote up 2 photo essays about trips to the Fakahatchee (I've posted some of these photos here in the past). On my site they are under the "Home Life" menu item titled Current Events. I've now got over 120 pics of my orchids (I just added 56), and the photo poll mentioned above consists of 6 of my species photos.

I had severely overwatered (not surprising, actually) one of my Catts :(
I pulled it from it's pot to find nothing but mushy roots, there wasn't a trace of life or green anywhere but the leaves! :shock:
At that moment, I was busy doing...something :scratchhead: ...and just put the plant on a rack so I could take the name off and declare it dead later in the day.
Well, for whatever reason, I never got to it. :dunno:
Yesterday, I glanced at it and saw two tiny little roots growing! No sphag, no bag...nothing but the plant lying on it's side and getting the overspray from when I misted the plants around it :nod:
Moral of the story...
Orchids are not the delicate fragile plants most of us assume they are before we start learning :)

I know you think that i'm an evil person, but as i noticed how the green leaves are surviving and forgiving i started reading about orchids and how to take care of them. my poor orchid survived, but it never gave me a spike again!
i want a spike really bad, so one day i thought, hmmm, what might happen if i water it with soya milk. and I did!
instead of giving me the wanted spike, look what i got! i'm confused and i have no idea what to do next. so help! :shock:

So needing desperately to grocery shop I headed for Trader Joe's today.
Also - some of you know I recently got my first ever miltonia spikes after trying for a few years. I wanted to be able to bloom them before I got anymore - even tho they are a favorite of mine.

This year we are going to expand our orchid selection, so we would like some input from orchid hobbyists as to what they would like to see when visiting a retail store.
Aside from the typical species that you see in the flower department of every store, what would catch your attention, and make you say, "Wow, nice orchid selection"?

I hit the jackpot today when a lady came in to look around. She noticed our monstrously huge Epiphyllum (orchid cactus) and that led to orchid talk. She doesn't grow orchids, but she has a brother in Hawaii who takes pictures (or something like that) for an orchid vendor on the big island. He gets free orchids in his work, so he sends them to her. She enjoys them in bloom, but she's never taken the time to learn how to take care of them and rebloom them, so she usually tosses them. I said right away and quite shamelessly that I would take them off her hands. She agreed, and a little later today she returned with 3 dendrobiums, a brassia, and a degarmoara!
None of them are in bloom, but I'll work on getting pics up. All of them but one Dendrobium have tags. I looked them up online so I would at least know what the blooms should look like. They all have healthy new growth in various stages of development and most show healthy new root growth.
I really only want to keep the Degarmoara and the NOID Dendrobium, at least until I see what its blooms look like. I'm planning on selling/trading the others, but I'd like to make sure they're in a stable condition first. Do you think it's worth the effort, or should I post them anyways at dirt cheep for people who don't mind a rescue orchid? I'll probably clean them up, maybe repot a couple that need it, and post them when I know they'll be worth the trouble for other people.
The best part of this is that the lady said she wouldn't discourage her brother from sending her more orchids, because now she knew who to give them to after they're done blooming. So there's more where these came from!!! That means more FREE blooming size orchids that just need a little extra attention to bring them back to peak health, both for me to keep and to sell/trade to people here on the OB!

Now I'm praying they'll be OK when I come home. I know most of them are going to be just fine, but there are a couple that I worry about. I don't wanna come home to find that some of my babies are sick or dying. :pray:

The place we stayed is noteworthy also. A cabin in the forest about a mile and a half (or 2km) above the small town of Guadalupe. We have stayed there before, and will probably return every 3-4 years . . . it's just such a unique and wonderful place.

Was turning in to a nice sized plant when last spring for some unknown (to me) reason it went down hill fast.
No good roots and every part of it dying.
I was left with 3 hopefully good enough pbulbs - I put plant, pot and all in an old fish tank with damp peat and within a couple months had new growth starting.

The BL Morning Glory is a little chid I won on the raffle we had on the bus back.
I went with a budget and when I got home I told my husband I was really good:) He wanted to know if I got everything I wanted I said "no there were several I could not find". So maybe next time I'll find them. Darn I really could have gotten that Den. Gatton Sunray and they were big and beautiful. My bus buddies probably would have tied it on the back end since the luggage area underneath was FULL!:cheer:

When I first wake up I lay on the bed, being pounced on by my dogs. Somehow they all, but particularly Sully (my avatar), sense when I'm awake, even if I don't open my eyes or even move. And the game is on! Sully's 85 pounds crash into me while he wags his tail so hard that his whole body wags with it. Hannibal, a male pug, leaps at my hands while his sister, Ripley, grins like no other dog can. Cody, old and dignified now at 13 years, stays at the foot of the bed, staring at me and occasionally pawing the air to let me know he's there, too. Once I move, it's really on with Sully; after all, he's still a puppy despite his size. He barks, growls, dodges my hands, grabs my hands, rolls on his side to try to push me off the bed, then grabs my hands again, all the while looking like he's laughing with joy. Finally I get out of bed so I can let them out into the back yard where Sully patrols for stray squirrels and birds he chases but never catches. I think if he caught one, though, he'd lick it a few times and then let it go, happy to have met a new friend.
Once the dogs are out it's orchid time. Though not all will need watering I still handle every single plant, examining each for problems (today I found mealies on a couple of Paphs in the Paph room) and looking at the new growth, whether leaves, pseudobulbs, roots, or, most exciting, spikes. About two-thirds of the plants are Phals (maybe 70?), so many have all but finished blooming for the season, but some, too, are just getting started. Hyroglyphica is initiating a spike, as is a violacea, a Neofinitia, my largest Sarchochilus, and a second Phal. deliciosa. All of the Phals have wonderful, deep tangles of roots burrowing through the pots and most are busily growing leaves. A Psychopsis has a beautiful, large bloom that opened several days ago, another is growing a spike and has just produced a new growth lead. Phal. Equilacea, a primary hybrid of equestris and violacea, opened its first flower over night, and has a fragrance that makes it worth growing even if the flower weren't so lovely. A stuartiana which recently bloomed, despite being way too small, shows signs of stress, but is still actively pushing out a new leaf. My larger ludemanniana, done blooming it seems, is now growing a keiki which is maybe a third of an inch tall from the spike and is already growing two roots.
Today's orchid time lasted at least a couple of hours. While working with them, looking, fertilizing, and loving them, I listen to some good (to me) music. We started with some really, really old Genesis (can you remember them when Phil Collins was just the drummer, and there were five members of the band?). Then I'd had enough of remembering the halcyon days of my youth and so switched gears to Leo Kottke. Nobody picks a guitar like Kottke. Coffee, of course, is always an important part of the process, too; today's is from some freshly roasted Costa Rican bean. Then the dogs come back in. Sully demands his breakfast, the pugs laugh at the thought, and Cody obligingly eats about half a bowl of food. I'm convinced that the reason dogs can eat the same food day in and day out is because they eat so quickly most of the time that they don't get a chance to taste it.
Finally, dogs fed, plants happy, I load a pipe I made a couple of years ago now. The smooth wood feels nice, the dark brown of the coloring deepened from repeated smoking. Not politically correct, I know, but then when am I ever? I fire up my computer and sign on to the Orchid Board where I can visit with the thoughts of my friends.

I'm curious to see how each person articulates the fragrances. What smells like one thing to one person may smell completely different to another. :biggrin:
To start off:
Rhynchostylis gigantea - Orange tea. If you ever put a bag of orange tea in hot water, you've got the fragrance.
My NOID Cattleya - Plumeria, with a cinnamony background. The faded flowers actually smell like cinnamon sticks for a while.
Miltonidium Hawaiian sunset - Rubbery, almost like pondwater where ducks have been swimming (this one's hard to describe). :dumb:
Zygoneria Adelaide meadows - I picked up two fragrances on this one. In the day, it had a strong, citrusy narcissus smell. At night, it smelled like citrus with hyacinth in the background.
Oncidium Sharry Baby - Sweet, almost like chocolate.
Vanda denisonia - Orange flowers, but slightly more soapy.
Degarmoara Winter Wonderland - Licorice. The blooms of this plant smell stronger when they're wet or when it's later in the day.
Maxillaria tenuifolia - Some variation here. Most of the ones I've smelled had a strong coconut/suntan oil scent. On one of my trips to Utah a few years back, though, I came across several that smelled like fresh propane (It wasn't the greenhouse!)
Caularthron bicornutum - Sweet citrus
Cycnoches chlorochilon - A blend of tulips and narcissus.
Bollopetalum Midnight Blue - This one isn't fragrant most of the time, but if you smell it at just the right time in the morning, it has a soft floral scent.
I'm gonna be out of town when my three new plants bloom, so I'll have to wait until I get back to smell them. I'll keep you guys posted. :evil: ]]>
Would you be a Cattleya because you prefer warmer temps and brighter light or would you be Masdevallia because you prefer cooler mornings and lower light levels...how 'bout a Dendrobium, because they prefer to be pot bound and you like being in smaller places...:rofl:

From Andy's I received 4 mounts: Phalenopsis chibae in bloom, Dendrobium unicum in spike (I have been eying this guy for over a year :D), Angraecum erectum (a really big plant and mount) and Angraecum scottianum. Neither of the Angraecoids are in spike/bloom - it's too late for that.
From Mountain Orchids I received Dendrobium prentice, which went down to the tank (a really tiny orchid); Masdie Sunset Jaguar 'Regal Cat' and Masdie Sunset Jaguar 'Psychedelic Sunset'. I hope to keep the Masdies doing well as the summer temps tend to stay in low 80s as a high (we're still in high 60s-low 70s right now.) Winter temps drop below 60F every night. Both Masdies are in full bloom, multiple spikes, with more spikes coming along.
These are two highly respectable companies that I recommend. ]]>

This is what I call blooming size orchids 4/12 has bloomed and one has buds. I bought from Andy's for the first time 5 weeks ago at the Longwood Gardens Show. All plants still look healthy, and pest free. And here is the original photo.

The company is Andy's Orchids (Andy's Orchids - Orchid Species - Orchids - Species Specialist - Orchids on a stick), and I'd been drooling over their online inventory for months. They have a huge A-Z selection of species orchids. Before I placed my order, I emailed them with questions and received a satisfactory response the same day. My order was easy to place, went through without a hitch, and I received it exactly when it was supposed to arrive.
However, I had made a mistake when typing my delivery address. Andy's called me right away and gave me all the delivery info, including the number to FedEx and the address for the "missed package" pickup station. I received all 8 plants in excellent condition, including two plants in full flower whose blooms were perfectly unharmed. They have all done very well in the last few weeks that I have had them.
A few days ago I received a follow-up call from Andy's, making sure that my order had arrived to my satisfaction and to see if I had any questions. They remembered my address slip-up and told me (without my asking) that they had corrected the mistake in their files for future orders.
Now, this may seem like just plain customer service, but I really appreciated the care and quality of every step in the process of getting my plants. It would be really easy to screw up something as delicate as ordering live orchids over the internet, and Andy's did it with ease and a smile.
I'm sorry that my first post on these forums is a plug for a company, but I owe it to them. I do not work for or know them personally. I do not endorse them over any other company, because this was my first online order. I believe it is possible that there are other companies with better, cheaper plants. I also understand that other people may have had experiences with Andy's Orchids that were not as pleasant as mine. But I made my first online purchase of my favorite living things in the whole wide world, and Andy and his crew really came through for me. I realize this all would be much easier, as would the research and addition of any new plants, if I had one of these nifty programs. I've been to the websites of both, and both claim somewhat similar things. Although, it does appear orchid wiz is much more comprehensive than aq plus. However, there is a HUGE price difference. I'm having a hard time stomaching the price on orchid wiz, plus updates.
So, my question is really... what's the difference between the two? Pros? Cons? Compare & contrast? Is there anyone here who has both? I'd like to hear your thoughts! ]]>

With the social groups closing (an understandable and logical course of action, given the lack of participation) a few of the members of the Species Phals social group have mentioned the idea of a forum or subforum just for species phals and their hybrids, similar to the Neofinetia forum.
This may seem redundant to some, but there are quite a few people interested primarily in species phals, and it can be hard and time-consuming to track down posts about them in the main phal forum.
This thread is for anyone who wants to show their support for the creation of a species phal forum or sub-forum and ask Marty to make it happen.

1. Vanda Paki from Orchidaceae. Its leaf span is 18". Only $15 :shock: I was told that it should bloom soon.:biggrin: Mark, the owner had the one as a sample plant with bloom. The flowers are really nice. Here is the picture from his website. Vanda Paki If you like Vanda, I highly recommend it.
2. sedirea japonica - It is really cute. I repotted with moss mound. This is my 3rd try and I am getting better at it. :biggrin:

Ok so nothing is blooming and there aren't any big, impressive specimens (yet :evil:) but I'm really excited to have gotten these plants and to have more opportunity for experimenting with water culture.
I got a Bl. Sunset Glory and 2 Leptotes bicolor seedlings.
Also, even though they aren't orchids, I want to share the two bromeliads that came with them, Neoregelia ampullacea and a cryptanthus.

For example why is a Plurothallis an Orchid but a Dandelion is not?
What is the common factor that links them all together :scratchhead:
With many of the genera I can look at the flowers and say "that's an orchid". Recently on a visit to a botanical gardens and while in the 'orchid room' I looked at some of the things my husband pointed out and said "No way is that an orchid, looks more like a bromiliad" and sure enough we had that confirmed.
But I can't do that with all the Genera and I don't even know what it is about them that I am identifying even when I can spot them.
So... does any one know the proper definition of what links them together. I would love to know. ]]>

Dr. Glen Lehr from New World Orchids was a guest speaker for a local orchid society meeting Tuesday. First of all, he was really a great speaker and I enjoyed it a lot. This is what followed me home: Tamakongo. This is also my first neo (well not really, I killed one once).
He brought so many good-looking neos with him. There are some "EXPENSIVE" ones. I still do not understand why they are so expensive. He also brought a few neo encyclopedias written in Japanese. I had fun helping other members to look up flowers as they are picking up the neo they want.

I've got several orders either on the way, or in one case, already arrived.
-My "seedling stimulus package" of all 20 arrived yesterday from Oak Hill.
-4 on the way from Cool Phrog Orchids
-Seedlings and a NBS on the way from Larry's Orchids...
-Den. seedlings via ebay on the way.
I decide to buy just a few, and then I can't help myself!
So, to make matters worse (or better :biggrin: ) I took my daughter to her first Orchid Society meeting on Tuesday. We bought 10 raffle tickets (5 for me, 5 for her) for the "plant opportunity table." First one drawn was one of ours, so I picked up Phrag. Mem Dick Clements. 2 tickets later, mine gets drawn again so I send my daughter up and she picks out Brassia Rex 'Christine' (which I already have, but she didn't care). Things go on for a while (there were a LOT of plants) and then my ticket gets drawn again!! I pick pths. restrepioides. Shortly thereafter another of mine gets drawn and I give it to a member who's not won any yet. Then, pretty much everyone who'd gotten a ticket had at least one plant, and another of my tickets is drawn. My daughter races to the table and picks up a Cattleya noid.
I felt weird winning all those plants, although I shouldn't. There have been times when people just have great luck and go home with 4+ plants. Really, half of the tickets were my daughters, so we have 2 plants a piece for a total of 4. It would have been 5, but I gave one away. :) Still felt a bit guilty. I think I'll be bringing some plants to donate next month! :lol: Plus, I need to make some room now! ]]>

I left Portland on Thursday for San Diego and just got back. The weather was so nice with mid to upper 60 degree. Now I am in Portland. It is raining and COLD.
I had a great time there. There are many Austrarian dedrobiums with hefty prices, $30 to $500. The entire room was filled with the scent. It was a bit overwhelming.

I did pick up a few things at the Lansing show -- rather more than I should have really.
First there was this lil thang. I had been looking for one to replace the one I lost several years ago but the only venders I had found at that time who had it wanted more $ than I was willing to part with. Attachment 27775Hopefully I can keep it happy this time around.

I also did something I don't think I've done before -- purposely bought a plant of which I already had one. Sometime back I bought a NBS Masd floribunda x imposter. We need your help! Many of you may have had a chance to discover the beautiful, exotic, complex world of orchids. At the AOS gardens in Delray Beach you’ll find rare tropical plants, orchids, bamboo, and palms growing as they do in the wild. The lush gardens are woven throughout almost four acres and showcase exquisite orchids in a 4000 sq. ft. greenhouse replete with two indoor waterfalls. The stunning array of colors, shapes, sizes and fragrances are sure to capture your imagination and create an unforgettable experience. The gardens have been a favorite of world renowned photographers and countless weddings.
The AOS Public Garden Committee met February 18th to discuss what, if anything could be done to save the garden. After a great deal of brainstorming, the committee proposed seeking AOS Executive Committee approval to facilitate a pledge campaign in support of keeping the garden open. Essentially, we’re simply asked for a chance to turn the situation around and save the garden we have all grown to value and enjoy.
There is a pledge campaign afoot and we need your pledge! Each and every pledge will send a message that the gardens are valuable to the orchid community! The results of the pledge campaign will be shared with the Board of Trustees at the April meeting in Houston. At that time, the AOS Public Garden committee and the South Florida Leadership Council will also present a comprehensive plan to not only sustain the garden, but create an orchid education center that members can be proud of and benefit from.
Bottom line, we need to raise money-and we need to do it quickly and consistently. There is no amount too small (and no amount too large!) If you are unable to donate money at this time, please write a letter expressing your support of the garden to Jim Jordan, AOS, 16700 AOS Lane, Delray Beach, FL 33446.

Well... they not only decided to raise their prices (hey, I fully understand this, times are tough) but they plants are smaller than before and they are also re-potting all of them into larger pots so they can say it's now a 6" or even 8" instead of a 4".
To make matters worse, they don't do a proper re-pot, they just yank it out of the pot it's in, media and all, and toss it in a larger pot, then fill in with this extremely fine "stuff." At first look I thought it was soil because it really looks like it is, but I think it's some sort of soil-less potting-mix.
Still... I could just buy the orchid , come home and yank it out of there and back into a 4" pot, and call it good. But, today I noticed mealy bugs too! There were a couple beautiful paphs, but all mealies. I noticed spots on most of the phal and den flowers as well. :( :( They've always had the healthiest stuff! I'm so sad, and disapointed... and a bit frustrated too.
I'm not sure if they just don't know the mix they are using will suffocate those poor roots, or if they just don't care. They sell regular orchid bark, but aren't using it. I hemmed and hawed on whether to say anything.... or how I'd even approach it if I did. Anyhow, just had to vent. Guess it's back to buying my instant gratification 'chids from Lowe's the the HD. ]]>

My big yellow Noid is in bloom again, I can't wait to go home in April to see it! The spike is so heavy that that the only way to keep the plant upright is by putting it in another pot.
My harequin phal started a spike, as did a mystery Noid I have. They broke the first spike on it when it was almost fully grown :(, but the phal decided to wake a dormant bud to respike, and started a brand new spike as well! I can't wait to see this one!
As a result, my mom is more tolerant of my orchid addiction. :biggrin: And wants me to promise to leave them in France for her. She'll be an orchid addict by the time I'm done with her!
I need advice! What can i do to deter her? I have the plants out of reach but she still attacks them!
