The theme of Microcosm is conservation. Just as species combine to form healthy, functioning ecoysystems, Microcosm seeks to form a coalition of partners who apply their skills in cooperation to safeguard the planet's biodiversity.
Microcosm will take place September 3-4, 2010 in Lynnwood, WA (a few minutes north of Seattle). It is a two-day event that will include field trips, lectures, workshops, vendor sale and benefit auction. All proceeds benefit Tree Walkers International to support amphibian conservation efforts.

It is my frist time to visit this show. So I am as curious as you all. What can I see in this local show?
This show is hosted by a temple. The most interesting thing is the champions are chosen by gods. Gods love orchids too!:bowing:rofl:You may ask me how could the gods choose champions? Well, they choose it through casting the lots.:biggrin:
When I reach this temple, it is beyond my expectation.

I just wanted to let you guys know that my photography exhibit on Florida's Native Orchids at the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary near Naples, Florida will be set up tomorrow, April 1st and will run through the end of April. If you are in the area, please go check it out, and while you're there, take a walk along the boardwalk and enjoy a bit of old Florida in their old-growth cypress swamp.

It's more than just a photography exhibit...beneath each photo, you will find detailed information on the orchid, including its common name, habitat, blooming time and range map.
All the photos in the exhibit will be available for purchase...in addition, matted prints will be available for purchase in the gift shop.

I was curious how difficult it might be...so I put one together. It's rather experimental due to its collaborative nature. Meaning, anybody can add their society and update it when appropriate. The openness of the structure makes me somewhat nervous...but based on what I've seen on this forum...people are quite good at taking online collaborative projects with a grain of salt.
Instead of just orchid societies...it's been expanded to include fern and bromeliad societies as well. Ferns and bromeliads are frequently found growing epiphytically with orchids in nature and their hobbyists often mount their epiphytic plants. So of all the various plant groups...people from those groups can most easily start branching off into orchids.
The presentation topics are included as well. Actually, the presentation is displayed first...followed by the presenter and then the orchid society. I think that when many younger people think of societies they think of funny hats, secret handshakes, strange rituals and even stranger members. Focusing slightly more on local events is a subtle distinction that perhaps might have greater appeal. The emphasis is more on the portrayal of societies as sources of information versus societies for societies' sake.
I'm posting in this category because the page also includes local shows...that and there's no society category in this forum.
What else...? The scope of events is global...versus just the United States.

This is the Illinois Orchid Society's annual show, the *big* one, and it will be held at the Chicago Botanic Garden. It is entitled "Orchids in the Mist".
The show will be open to the public from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm both saturday 3/21 and Sunday 3/22. A special hour reserved for photographers will begin at 9:00 am Sunday. Admission to the show is free, but regular CBG parking fees apply.

Got to the Atlanta show around noon after the judging ended. Really nice displays with some outstanding orchids. I am into the smaller stuff but my mother who went with me is drawn to the larger Catts and Phrags. Didn't take pictures of many miniatures, I just followed my mother around taking pictures of her favorite orchids. I will post pictures of my purchases tomorrow. Got a Den. abberans, Den. oligophyllum, Onc. croesus, Max. variabilis, Den. "Pixie Charm", Phal. lobbii, and a Epidendrum porpax. Among the largest annual shows in the USA are the ones held in New York City, Santa Barbara, Miami and the Redland Orchid Festival (Homestead, FL), although many other large and small cities have their own annual shows.
The Atlanta show and sale will be held March 12-15 this year at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. Vendors from throughout the USA attend this show to display and sell their plants.
Don't forget to check your monthly newsletter, or the American Orchid Society's monthly Orchids magazine for annual orchid shows/sales throughout the USA. The majority of the shows occur during the Spring and Fall months, but there are shows every month. ]]>
