For those of you who require additional drainage holes in plastic pots I have found that a taper drill is the perfect tool . I used to use a soldering iron to burn holes in the pots , until one day I let the iron get too hot and the smoke burned the heck out of my eyes , the smoke , I found out to my cost , is very toxic !!

Here's the situation:

We are planning to build a "conservatory" (for orchid growing now, and later for anything whoever has this house after us). We've looked into using our well water -- too high in calcium and iron, bringing in water from our pond -- too expensive, and now we are thinking about an RO system. Likely this system would be in our basement with a hookup to the conservatory. In our basement, the water would be too cool to use directly.

So we need to heat it some way. But our heating/plumbing guy says he cannot find an appropriate heater because of the caustic nature of pure water.

How has anyone else solved this problem?

Hi everybody,

I'm currently scoping out a design for a glasshouse heater system at the moment - everything is in the planning stage so i have no firm dimensions etc currently. What i am working with at the moment is the heating for the glasshouse. I want to grow primarily Phalaenopsis and i live in southern Australia where it can get quite cold at night. I have heard varying stories about using gas heaters etc and i am leaning more toward the 'old school' method of circulating hot water from a boiler through a network of pipes... what are peoples thoughts on this? Is it easily controlled? pros & cons etc any system recommendations?

Hi! I'm hoping to get some recommendations on small sized fans to use in my orchidarium. It came with two that hang from the ceiling, but then I added a wonderful misting system and I need more air circulation towards the bottom of the orchidarium. I bought several Coralife fans and have gone through at least three in the last year or less. The problem? Well sometimes water will drip on them from my mounted orchids that need extra air circulation....I'm tired of putting the money into the fans and I am hoping someone can help me out, other then to not let the water drip on them....lol. I like the small size and the output of the larger sized Coralife fans and I need something that will sit on the floor of my orchidarium, so no mounting or clip-on's. So any recommendations would be greatly appreciated! TIA!

Does any one use a program to track their orchids? I'm trying out one that is kind of neat, free if using it to track less then ten orchids. It's called Cattleya-Log and seems like it might be worth registering(49.95). It's simple to use, tracks cost of orchid collection, where they were purchased, when, purchase condition, parentage, size and type of pot, medium, assigns a catologue number, and you can include a photo of the plant/flower. I guess the best description would be a growers journal but computerized instead of hand written. Has library, and wishlist as well. You can printout the wishlist before the show and cross off those you get while there, then on the program enter the dated you acquired it.
If you don't have one, check this one out.. Cattleya-Log 3.0 - From Systeme Software, Inc

Hi folks,
must an exhaust fan be used for moving air out of a greenhouse?

Why can't a normal fan be used but facing out from the outside of the GH- wouldn't that be drawing in air from inside the GH and blowing it out?

When I say normal fan I mean this - the main round fan blades and front and back grill -which is either on a bracket or stand.

I have looked at all the calculations- trying to get the right cfm but nothing I've found comes close to what it seems I'll need for removing the air volume per minute [see below for my 'GH' dimensions] plus it's measured in litres per minute here in Australia.

I can easily can get a pretty big normal type fan and sit it in the timber frame- fill in around it. Otherwise the exhaust types fans I could get are:

EZI AIR 4 POLE INLINE FAN 300MM 240V 65W 380L/S
Flow Rate L/Sec: 110 approx

SPECTRUM HGT-30 AXIAL INLINE FAN 300MM BLACK 65W 380L/S

SPECTRUM CUSTOMLINE C200 CENTRIFUGAL FAN 150WATT 220L/S

or

Easy Duct Thermal Transfer System
55 litres per second

Damian.

Extra info:
I'm in the process of setting up a new area for my Pleurothallidinae & Oncidinae alliance plants which is approximately 5 metres long by 2.5 metres wide [actually it's wider at one point and tapers thinner towards the other end] by 2.8 metres high.

On one end wall I'm putting in an evaporative cooler [with the back of it actually exposed outside so as to draw in new air] sitting on the bench and I have a big 3 speed tilt adjustable wall mounted oscillating fan [maybe 40cm?].

On the other end wall I am considering putting in a fan that would draw out hot air in summer and in conjuction with the evaporative cooler keep temperatures lower and humidity higher.

The setup is actually on the east side of my house [I'm in Australia]- house on one side [brick, two big windows] and solid fence on the other side- I've just put up some timber framing, polyflute, clear plastic, shadecloth etc put the area does stay much cooler than my other little shed where I've been growing everything.

I purchased a 100GPD RO System from Ray about a year ago. It came with extra filters. But what I am wanting to know is when should I be changing these filters? I read that it is supposed to be once a year....but I probably only use about 20 or 30 gallons a week if that. So shouldn't the filters last me a lot longer then the recommended time? And how important is it that I sterilize the system like the instructions mention? Also I just purchased a TDS Meter....the same one that Gin and Ross bought which I read in another thread. If I go off the TDS Meter for when the filters need to be changed....what kind of reading will I be looking for?

TIA!
