I like the Neofinetia falcata species but I think I like the hybrids better. They certainly do bloom a lot better.
The pictures are all of the same plant with different background. I was seeking a contrasting color. The first three flowers were photographed in shade and the last one was in full bright sunlight.

I have tried higher light (one photon higher and it would have mutated to Cactus!), Temperature changes, fertilizer diet, etc.. nothing! This year I decided to get rid of it and offered it to a friend of mine. BOOM! 6 spikes & 26 flowers! Still moving to a new home soon :D

Tue, 10 Nov 2009 23:11:22 GMTThis plant is a primary hybrid that is C. (L.) pumila x C. walkeriana and is growing in a 3" pot with sphagnum and hangs high. It is supposed to bloom on each in-mature growth but it made several growths during the summer and did not bloom. It must need either cooler nights or equal days because it made buds on the new growth this time when they were only half matured.
The first plant does not have a clonal name. The third flower is 'Princess Road' and it did not bloom in the summer either.
The colors on both are very vibrant.

I am not sure what group they are in, but they are a interesting ground orchid that does well in part sun here in central Florida. I think, I bought mine at Lowes and Wal-Mart. The yellow & pink ones came from Wal-Mart last year and the purple ones from Lowes earlier this year.

I couldn't capture the colors very easily but the back of the hood (up-turned lip) is almost perfect black.

Finally, little Haraelephant (aka Haraella retrocalla) decided to get with the program, and now has two healthy blooms that smell a bit like grape juice. Behind these are two more spikes, and tons of new roots are poking out the sides of the net pot. Took forever to get going, but now it seems there's no stopping it! :bananaslide:

The next picture is a close up, there are large plants in the jar but if you look closely it's as if all these tiny plants started growing as an afterthought, it's a shame as I had to throw them out. Any thoughts on what would cause them to start growing so late?
There were nearly 50 plants in the jar but only 44 were suitable for potting up. The others either had no roots or was just too small, don't tell my wife I had them on the kitchen bench when she wasn't home:
Finally this is how I grow them, in plastic storage boxes individually potted up in 2 inch pots. They grow in fine bark. There are 3 flasks here (with one flask going across two boxes) - two flasks of cattleya hybrids and one flask of paphs.
I just wish I could get the roots to stay like this, they grow well during summer but die back in winter but I guess that's supposed to happen:

The plant is about six inches tall but can reach twelve inches with a spike of about twelve flowers and it is very floriferous. I use to have one called Kuranda Classic that was a nice magenta but it bit the dust years ago. These plants are what are called "reverse peloric" where the lip has reverted back to looking like the petals. The flowers on this one looks white from a distance but there is a hint of pink up close.

This is one of the first chids I ever purchased. Got it from a reputable dealer and it has bloomed in the past.
I ordered it as C Penny Kuroda and that is indeed what the tag says but that little voice in my head tells me it can't be :hmm
All the C Penny Kuroda pics I've been able to find show the plant with spots, which makes sense when you see it's parentage (50% guttata). The other background plants are: gaskelliana, mossiae, trianae, labiata and lueddmanniana.
If it weren't for the huge percentage of guttata in the plant, I wouldn't be questioning it but :dunno:

It is growing in a 3" pot, the stems are 3" to 5" tall and the spikes are about 8". It currently has four spikes and four new growths. It re-blooms on the old spikes and consequently is in bloom throughout the year. The flowers are actually a little more lavender than what the photos reflect.

This orchid reminds me of Spring on this rainy Autumn day. Buds look like tulips and the scent is like Spring flowers to me.
The second photo is of the open flowers last year when it was still growing in water culture, now it is grown in passive hydro in leca. It blooms on every new lead.
And the tedious name on the tag for this complex hybrid: Pot. (His Light x Sunstate's Ted and Alice) 'Carmela'

Sun, 25 Oct 2009 16:16:16 GMTI got this one at last year's Tampa Orchid Club show/sale on Halloween. It was $10 because the spike with one bloom on it was broken...I took it anyway :)
It lost two of it's three leaves and started spiking a few weeks ago. The spike has three buds, one of which has bloomed :dance:
It's very hard to get a good photo of this plant! The spike is so delicate, the slightest breeze sets it in motion :faint:
I'm also kind of paranoid about breaking the spike when I bring it to the TOC meeting on Tuesday. I think I'll hold this one in my hands for the ride down there :)

This is my first time blooming this plant. It started to spike in August but a grasshopper feasted on it one evening so I don't think I'll see a spike from that growth. :((
Anyway, I'm glad I was able to get the other growth to send out a spike and bloom. I was afraid with all of the rain and cold that it wouldn't have enough light to bloom for me.

A few weeks ago, I noticed that one of the tall canes had the top leaves sort of stuck in a cylinder shape at the end. I tried to nudge them open a bit but they were very fragile so they broke. what I found inside surprised me...two spikes were stuck in there! The last two pictures show what's been happening since :coverlaugh:
The spikes grew towards one of the windows behind it and I just let it go to see how far it went. The blooms have very cute little notches in the petals that were not there in previous bloomings :dunno:

Photo 2: Oncidium Yellow Spring- Mini plant, only a few inches high. It was a freebie at a show I went to in early June
Photo 3: A NOID that I got in bud at a show 2 weeks ago. It was sold to me as a Miltonia morelianna, but I think you'll agree that it's clearly not! To top it off it's showing some suspicious ring spots on the leaves, I'm pretty sure it has ORSV.
Photo 4: Trade name is Phal Aida, which I'm certain corresponds to Phal Purple Gem var coerulea based on what I read on internet. Here again the camera screwed up, there is absolutely NO red color in these blooms. The lip is a solid dark purple.

They opened well, no weird looking petals or lips. It has a very slight fragrance that is nothing to write home about. It will be interesting to see how well it does as it matures more.

Eight spikes this time around, grown in a 4" Vanda basket in straight sphagnum moss (it's a bit of a water hog), on the shelf with the Phals but a bit closer to the lights. Very faint fragrance around midday.

Delightful floral fragrance with fruity notes both day and evening. Plant is neat, very compact, 11 inches tall.
It is a cross of B nodosa x Bc Makai. I was pleasantly surprised that I could grow it and bloom it much easier in the house than Bc. Makai and the flowers are bigger and more fragrant.
Correction: Bc. Little Marmaid is C. walkeriana x Bc. Maikai

Very easy to grow, it hangs with the Oncidiums and likes just a bit less light and more water. Wood mount is 1"x 3". Entire inflorescence is barely an inch across. Thanks for looking! ;)

Anyway first time flowering and despite the shape it's easily one of the prettiest coloured flowers I have grown to date. I don't know that I captured the elegant colouring but it's a realy beauty to see in natural light.

The purple and white dendrobium lost her blooming spike but she still two other ones that haven't begun blooming yet.;)
The cane on the lavender dendrobium got snapped in the fall. :(( It had a thread of connecting tissue left so I made a temporary splint by shoving a toothpick through the cane. One little bloom managed to open since the mishap, but the jury's still out on the remaining buds.
I recently acquired the Prosthechea cochleata. She had 3 buds upon delivery but one blasted. Two managed to survive and their fragrance is reminiscent of baby powder. :cloud9:
My dancing lady has gone wild with 5 blooming spikes and another new 8 inch spike.
Last but not least is my Noid Vanda. She formerly had the reputation of being a stubborn bloomer, but not anymore. This is her 3rd bloom session this year.

Sat, 26 Sep 2009 01:48:26 GMTFirst flowering seedling, it's a selfing of a really good parent. I am really really disappointed with the size. Does anyone know why this one would be about 1/3 the size of other flowers I see on the show bench. Will the flowers get bigger in future? What does it need?
Also the staminode is off kilter but I'm not worried about that so much as it will correct itself hopefully. But the tiny flower size is a worry. The plant is in a two inch pot and I also think the colour is good.

Two of my Vandaceous plants have finally bloomed. Not too long after I purchased them, they spiked. And after about a few months of...Hey, all! :)
Two of my Vandaceous plants have finally bloomed. Not too long after I purchased them, they spiked. And after about a few months of waiting, the flowers bloomed.
The Pomatocalpa spicata is supposed to have longer spikes with more flowers, but at the time I didn't realize how much water they needed to really put on a show. They're still nice.
The Robiquetia succisa suffered a bit from the recent sudden spike in temperature from the wild fires up in the mountains that ravaged Southern California not too long ago. I only have four buds left on the spike, and the one I'm showing is the first flower to bloom. Keep in mind the pic does the flower no justice whatsoever. This is a bright yellow with nice bright red markings. In the pic the red looks brown.
I also apologize if the pics are fuzzy, I don't have a macrolens, so the pics aren't crisp. The pics were enlarged with a photo editing program, but nothing else was done to them.
The first few pics are of the Pomatocalpa spicata, the last two will be those of Robiquetia succisa.

It is a seedling in a two inch pot with one growth that is about six inches and the new growth is about fourteen inches. This plant is supposed to be a spring bloomer after a dry winter rest has caused it to drop it's leaves. Well, this plant decided it couldn't wait so about two months after I received it I noticed a large purple bump on the tip of the small growth that has turned into what you see in the picture. The flowers are about two inches and are very waxy and long lasting.

Second bloom on this seedling I got 3 years ago now growing in Passive Hydro in leca and receiving supplemental light in the Winter only, in N.E US. Last year it also had a couple of flowers in water culture. So far it is the best bloomer of all Brassavola I tried to grow in the house and a handsome compact plant. There is a fourth flower on this stem, not visible here.
Fragrance is wafting across the room at night, typical spicy floral brassavola type. However, close-up, clove scent is strongest to my nose and the undertone of meat cooking on the fire. In the dark I feel like I am in the jungle. Does anyone else detect these scents with Brassavolas and their hybrids? I heard "medicinal", but not the last one before.

Missed a few that bloomed in my absence, and the first two I’m posting today were down to the last bloom.
From left to right:
• Brassavola cucullata – down to the last bloom
• Dendrobium Velvet Melody – again, the last bloom
• Lc. Sagrik Wax ‘Fragrance’ – plant – leggy, almost Dendrobium-like growth (this plant is almost 30 inches tall).
• Lc. Sagrik Wax ‘Fragrance’ - spike
• Lc. Sagrik Wax ‘Fragrance’ – bloom – lives up to its name, even I can smell it. Not overwhelming like a Brassavola and some others (it doesn't chase you around the room), but prominent. Kind of a “spice” odor, but I’m not sure exactly what. My wife (the only reliable nose in the household) thinks maybe cinnamon, but not exactly, however she’s having allergy problems and is “smell-disadvantaged” at the moment. It IS an odor that almost anyone would enjoy, I’m pretty sure.
• Slc. Jewel Box ‘ Scheherazade’ – an old favorite. I gave away (donated to the Tucson Orchid Society annual auction) a huge specimen plant of this a couple of years ago. Realized I couldn’t do without it, so I started over with a small seedling, which finally bloomed. I didn’t get it back into the greenhouse quickly enough and one of my cats chewed off completely the leaves on the new leads. Don’t know if it will recover . . . maybe I’ll need to start over again!
• Tolumnia Golden Sunset – a nice reliable (although unpredictable) bloomer for me.
Also I’m posting pictures of Cycnoches (cooperi x barthiorum) in the Catasetinae and Stanhopea forum.

Not so much blue in this one, but it has an amazing fragrance, and the coloring is still gorgeous. The sepals and lip are reflexed on all of the flowers. It's a large (~15 bulbs) plant, carrying two heads of flowers - a total of 5 flowers between the two. It's been in bloom for the past month.

Can't find any info about it on the web, let alone other examples of flowers - the RHS website doesn't even list it as a registered cross. The Phelps told me they got it from Carter and Holmes, which I do not doubt.
The parents are Bl. Richard Mueller X Epidendrum conopseum. No fragrance detected during the day or at night.

This was a wonderful surprise. I fished out this back bulb from the trash can the morning after I discarded it and placed it in water culture a year ago. The much larger front part of the plant that was planted in leca at the same time is growing well but has not bloomed yet.
Blc Keowee 'Newberry' is an older cross, Blc. Lorraine Shirah x B. nodosa.
