Tue, 20 Oct 2009 17:53:05 GMTFor the last few years I've been growing in the house under lights. About this time last year I bought a used cedar frame greenhouse. After a summer of long work weeks, long benefit bike rides, working on the greenhouse and almost no sleep I finally have the greenhouse up and running. I moved all my orchids outside for the summer and with the lack of sun and many overcast wet days it wasnt a great growing season here in the norhteast. But now, after only a month in they're new digs the chids are exploding with spikes, new growth, and roots everywhere. I couldn't be more pleased! Thanks for looking :)

Here are pictures and specs of my setup.
9x11 shadehouse converted to a makeshift greenhouse.
Sides and roof are 6 mil Visqueen and the eaves are stuffed with foam.
1 set of T5 lights and 2 sets of T12 lights plugged to a 3 prong extra heavy duty (12 guage) extension cord which is run to my house to an unused dedicated circuit.
2 Warm Steam Vaporizers which alternate with the heater to another heavy duty extension cord run to the garage circuit.
1 Utility Heater with 2 heat settings and a thermostat from Lowes ($20) which works great so far.
We got down to 39 last night and the heater kept the GH a balmy 61.
We will probably have to put up another layer of Visqueen on the inside walls, but we're going to wait until temps are regularly in the 30s at night.
My chids are so spoiled. :think2:

Not only have I been buying plants, but also I forgot that most of them get bigger. :rofl: Since the original Vanda house got too tight, I ended up expanding it by 24" in width, which allows me to install two additional hanging bars.
I really have no more room to add any although I am expecting two Vandas from Smiley Orchids. :rofl:
The first one is the original and the second is the new one.

Its located in a shady spot that gets morning sun only,and protected from winds.
I use sand filled trays,and "moss and chicken wire plaques" to keep humidity high.
I am able to summer out cool growing miniatures this way for several years now.
The cage is to protect from squirels (?) and other animals.For slugs, I bait with "Escar-go" pellets both outside and inside the cage .
The legs of the cage are sitting in saucers of water to further discourage slugs and snails.
Even still ,I sometimes find some damage.
Hope this setup gives some ideas that could be helpfull.

This one has all the same minus the ferns and Butterworts
but an additional new fern.
And of course a few moss plugs to hopefully get a nice carpet after a few months. Im going to make a moss soup and paste it on there eventually.

Just wanted to show off my set-up. Right now, I have 3 large plastic shelves I bought from Wal-Mart on my family's screened porch. I currently have over 60+ orchids. I try my best to organize them by type. The first shelf is mostly oncidiums and cattleyas, the second is mostly dendrobiums, and the third is mostly phalaenopsis. There are phal. on all three shelves, because they overtook their shelf a long time ago. I am hoping to have a greenhouse one day. Anyway here is the picture.

I know that "technically" it isn't spring as yet, however the orchids and the outdoor and native plants are really starting to blossom. In this area we've had a "normal" rain year after 2 drought years.
The GH, of course, is another story but it is starting to bud/blossom as well.

The last pic of the Catt. in bloom is an example of the ones on the GH floor, and outside in various areas, that bloom in the fall.

I live on the 23rd floor of a high-rise apartment building in Chicago north of the downtown area, and the windows face south, so I get some great light :)
I grow mostly catts, but I also have dends, a paph, a cymb, ascds, a psychopsis, mini roses, a promenea species...a happy mix :D

I just found an old picture of when my brother was about 10 years standing next to the orchid plant that we had back home. To this day I still believe that it's C. trianaei.

I also...Finally got my setup the way I want it. I used two tall black-coated shelves from Lowes, which have lots of grids for hanging mounted plants. I also hung green hardware cloth down the left hand side for the mounties. (I did have to swap out the first shelves which were bare chrome, as they started rusting.) Each shelf is covered with Plant-Pro humidity trays from Tindara's. The lights are T5 four-bulb fixtures from HT Garden Supply.
Bottom two shelves (lower light) are Paphs, Angraecoids, and Phals on left; and Bulbos and Dendrochilums on right; with 21" between trays and lights. Top two shelves (higher light) are Catts, Encyclias, Tolumnias, Dendrobiums, Ascocentrums, etc., with 16" between shelves and lights. Plants are raised on stands or empty pots as needed to get them closer to the bulbs. Haven't decided whether to enclose the back and sides with a vinyl shower curtain to help raise humidity a bit.
Best thing about this setup is the tons of empty space I've now got! It's gonna be a long winter until I can start ordering plants to fill in the holes. :biggrin: :rofl:

I just wanted to share my pic of what I drive my man Nuts with!!
He don't mind my chids around the house, spread in different areas. But when I have them ALL piled up in one spot, drives him NUTS!! :lol:
I had to move them all to a central location, due to all the Christmas stuff that's now sitting in their usual spots!
I just want all/most of my blooming babies in the house! Well the ones in pots anyways! As I have a hell of time getting my mounted ones to be happy and pretty in there. :(
