Maxillaria inaudita without roots

I recently purchased a rare Maxillaria inaudita on E-Bay from a grower in Oregon with thousands of sales and 100% rating. When I received the plant it was out of its pot and just lying in the box. The problem is that the plant appears to have no roots. It looks healthy but no roots. I know that some Maxillarias ( like variabilis ) can be rooted by placing them in sand but I haven't a clue of what to do with this plant. Does anyone have experience rooting Maxillarias? The orchid vendor has offered to refund the purchase if I return the plant or I can have a one year guarantee. After one year if the plant dies its on me. I believe if the plant is still alive in a year it isn't going to die and will have roots. I need some help on successfully keeping this plant alive and rooted

Cattleya Protocorms on Bark

These Cattleya intermedia protocorms were salvaged from a contaminated replate flask two weeks ago. For the sake of experimentation, I’ve been growing them on a piece of old bark. The bark is positioned halfway down into a 5 ¼-inch mortar that has ¼ inch of water in the bottom and about a 1-inch layer of air under the bark. The mortar is in a plastic freezer bag at night and most if the day to keep the humidity high, but with some periodic drying and air circulation. It sits under fluorescent light for 16 hours per day, more or less. I’ve been keeping the bark surface moist and giving the seedlings a drop or two of water nearly every day with various nutrients every two or three days.

One disadvantage of putting protocorms on bark at this stage of development is that since they did not germinate and grow on the bark, they are not yet attached to it. They fall over easily, so they must be handled and watered very carefully. Another disadvantage is that they must be regularly tended to, unlike those in flasks.

On the positive side, they are more fun than the ones in flasks because they are not obscured and distorted behind glass and condensation. It’s easy to observe and photograph them. Another advantage is that they won’t require any acclimation to speak of. Deflasking won’t be an issue.

Two of the pics provide an earlier and current view of the seedling in the middle and show its first root initiating.

I am a college student and I just got the thumbs up from a prospective faculty mentor to go ahead and do an informal research project regarding orchid propagation next semester! Now all I have to do is apply for the funding...and look up information!

I'm looking mostly at seeing what kinds of culture mediums will work best at growing orchids from seed (varieties without endosperm only) as well as evaluating methods to grow keikis on phals.

What methods/culture mediums have you heard of/used for seed germination? Which methods/products do you know of to induce keiki formation in phals?

What species do you know of that have a relatively high germination rate and/or take the shortest amount of time to germinate (I only have about 4 months to do the whole project).

Please tell me what has worked for you or post links.

Thank you so much!
Your help is greatly appreciated.

So I recently reflasked some rangaeris amaniensis seedlings that had been sown in p668 (half strength, +20g/L sucrose).

I replated onto western W1.5 from the orchid seed bank project, which was the same media I used for my first flasking endeavor. However, the one difference is that I neglected to add the pureed banana. I don't know why I thought it would be OK not to add it - maybe I was lazy that day. Anyway, I think I may have screwed up, as it is now a few months post reflasking and I notice that root growth is quite stunted, despite robust leaf growth. There are several visible roots above the media that look like good roots, but most of the ones that are in the media are not growing very much.

This is in contrast to my last batch of seedlings (in the banana containing medium) which grew roots like NUTS.

Is this a result of a difference in genera (ie this is a vandaceous angraecoid species versus a cattleya relative) or did the banana make the difference? Should I reflask with new media containing banana?

Any ideas? Thanks!!!

I am sowing orchids here in Brazil. I have tried to replate protocorms after 3 and 4 months, but somehow up to 50 % of them end up oxydizing, turning brown and dying within the first 72 hours, the surving seedlings however, live to be very strong - much stronger than those which are not replated.
They're listed pretty cheap and I thought they'd sell like hot cakes. It just occurred to me that the folks that might be interested in species seedlings might not check the classifieds too often.

Most of these came from AJ at the OSP and a few came from Troy Meyers and are about 12-18 months old. If you are a repeat customer or we've traded in the past, knock a dollar off the price of each plant. ;)

Curious if anyone has used vermiculite or pure perlite as a compot medium and as to which they found to be better?? I'm about to deflask some seedlings and am getting everything together. My setup will be some shallow trays with either of said medium in a fish tank with a heat mat under the pots. plan on using physan 20 and captan to dampen off the little ones. I also have a 15W bulb in the aquarium that is made for aquariums (water plants). Any help is very much appreciated!!! Thanks!!!

I'm not much into Dendrobium but as part of my branching out from Phals, I have this little guy that had a nasty case of mealy bug this summer when it was given to me. With all the spraying of insecticides and major effort to clean it up some of the plant died back but now I see keikis growing with roots!!!!!:yikes: I know with my phal keikis, I wait until the roots are 3 in number and about 3" long before removing them. Do most of you follow this same thing with Dendrobium? And is it helpful to wrap these little guys in sphagnum to keep them moist or does that lead to potential rot?

Next question: the tag says "D. compactum x Udom Blue Angle. Doing a search, can't find "Udom" :help:help:help

Hi to all,

I'm starting to germinate my own orchid seeds, and I already have my first protocorms. I work with a laminar flow hood, and I'm having a problem when I replate protocorms from the mother flask to others.
The thing is that I'm using the wrong instrumental maybe, I use a kind of odontological spoom, but I think that is prety short and results me difficult to work with my fingers. I can't take it very well, and I've made 4 new flak from one mother flask, resulting in three of four flask contaminated. I've lost a lot of little seedlings! :((

My quiestion is that if you know what specific instrumental can I use to do it well, what other tipes of spoom can I look for, or whatever advice you want to give to me.

I'll try yo post some photos.

Thank you all!

Hugs from Argentina.

Hi all, I'm fairly new to orchids, and I need some guidance. When I bought my first Phal. I was unknowingly buying possible babies. After I brought it home two seed capsules formed from 2 of the flowers, this was over a month ago. They got big and green, and this last week they have started to turn red. How mature are they? Any idea when I should harvest for the green pod method of flasking? (They are total NOID seeds, but I want to get the experience of flasking).

Ok so here is our little 'disagreement'

My mum was trying to tell me today that when you pollinate an orchid and it works successfully and it produces the green pod/seeds, you can just plant the seeds in bark mix and coarse peat and the orchid will grow that way! She was then going on and on that seeds dont need flasking and you shouldnt pay some-one to flask seeds for you as they are just after money because you can just plant them in bark and coarse peat! -- This all comes from a women who owns no orchids herself!!

So to settle the disagreement, my question to you is - can you plant seeds directly into bark and peat??

Deflasking Orchids seedling

Deflask orchids seedling from flask is simple but, many a time buyer neglect some simple and useful method that could easily cause a decrease in yield, as deflasking in a proper fashion is a skill to grasp at for orchids dummy or beginner. Getting the plantlets out of the flask is by breaking it. How to break it properly so you won't harm or hurt the baby seedling. Cover the bottom of the flask with a piece of kitchen cloth. use preferably tool like a hammer, hit it well strike it right at the bottom crisply. after it cracks open, use a tweeter or any media to scoop the plantlets out, remember 1 fact.

If the plantlets are embedded too hard on on the growing media, a tweeter comes in handy to remove it slowly without causing the excessive lost of roots. Everything is fragile at this state. Orchid flask is popular nowadays due to the fact that everything had been done after crossing and shaking. It's hassle-free to the grower. And you could get a serial of similar plants out of the known parents.

So, after you have remove them safely from the glass, rinse them well to wash off any chemical or growing medium. Transplant them is the most important part as it determine whether your plantlet can grow healthily and happily : ) You would need to prepare well-drained seedling trays, compot or plug trays with 1/3 filled sphagnum moss mix with fine bark and shredded isolite. Plant them smoothly.
eBay Blogs - Flowerful garden

The environment is a crucial fact that affect the growth of plantlet. Water them by spraying is the most ideal way, as we can't afford to over water them at this state. Choose a well ventilated area for them airing is very important for orchid seedlings. This simple ways would lead you to obtain healthy seedling meant for future re potting. Re potting is done individually. As for now we hope you can have a simple understanding and some reference in orchid deflask :waving

I have all my stuff ready to begin flasking but have not received the seeds I've ordered. I just did 2 crosses on my blooms and hope to have pods in several months.

Does anyone have some seeds they would be willing to share so I can start playing. Nothing that's really precious because it's been years since the last time I did any flasking and I'm pretty rusty.

If any one is wiling to share some seed I will gladly pay postage for you to mail seeds to me and split seedlings if successful.

While I am very rusty on my sterile technique, I will be using autoclaves to sterilize all flasks, tools and media and all my flasking will be done in a professional laminar flow hood. Hopefully this will stack the odds in our favor. If anyone is willing to take a chance please let me know.

Thanks for considering this!

Hi everybody,

I received my first ever flasks of Phalaenopsis today:

Phalaenopsis Yu Pin Pearl
Phalaenopsis Brother Peterstar

They copped a bit of a beating in the transport and the agar has all broken up. I'm thinking i will have to deflask pretty soon sadly - i was hoping to acclimatise them a bit and deflask them in spring (I'm in Australia).

Alas things never go the way you hoped... so here's my plan of attack:

I have a small aquarium at home... I was going to put some water in the base of that with an aquarium heater in that set at 25oC (ideal situation would be a heat mat underneath the tank but i dont have one of those). Above that I was going to put a rack and I was going to deflask the seedlings, put them in individual pots with sphag, and leave a cover on the lid of the aquarium that I could move back and forth to control humidity. I was going to hang a computer fan in the tank for air circulation... thoughts? What size pot would you suggest i start with?

Any advice is appreciated...

Since I've always thought Haraella retrocalla should be used in more hybrids and mine is blooming like there's no tomorrow, I pollinated her on a whim. Much to my surprise, it took like wildfire and she has a capsule that has developed and grown very rapidly. The father is Phalaenopsis equestris alba.

Now, assuming the capsule continues to grow, anyone have any idea at all how long Haraella capsules take to mature? I've had a Doritaenopsis pollinated before and capsules took quite a while to mature (I don't recall how long -- that was 20 years ago, and I didn't do the pollinating).

Anyone have any ideas? I know what to watch for in the case that it's time to flask, but I'd like to know how long I have to find materials and figure out how the heck to grow the seeds, if they develop and are fertile.

While repotting her I noticed that she is only growing one lengthy stem and has never branched. Is this normal. I'd like to give my daughter a cutting. Would it be harmful to take a tip cutting or would this actually encourage the plant to branch out in different directions?

Hi Everybody,

I'm a microbiologist by trade who, as a side hobby, has a keen interest in culture of Orchids. I'm blessed with a laminar flow cabinet and autoclave etc but the common feel i am getting from this forum is that the general public are making do with tiny aquariums and the like to try and do their own hobby flasking. I've been toying with some designs for mini laminar flow cabinets and was wondering what peoples interest would be in purchasing one? they would come with a light and HEPA filtered air they could also have mini gas taps etc as well as everything else you might need in there to successfuly and, most importantly, aseptically, cultivate your orchid seed... you've spent many months waiting for the pod to ripen only to see it ruined by mold or contamination. What would people think would be a reasonable price for something like this?

How are you? I'm new to the world of Phalaenopsis and am enjoying the experience...I've grown epiphytes for sometime though and have experience in the Australian Sarcochilus...

I was wondering though - have many people had success growing their Phalaenopsis hybrids/species mounted? and if so on what? cork? tree fern? i would think tree fern might retain moisture too long...

Any thoughts?

Also, are there any Phal fans on the forum from Australia?

I also just harvested a bunch of Phaius tankervillae seed capsules, they are just about ready to package up. I haven't sown any of these yet so I can't speak to their viability. There is also a possibility that I may have some others to share, but not in such quantity.
I think I have a Phaius Flava keiki growing on the side of an old psuedobulb. Can I flask it in some meristem media? How much bigger would I need to let if get to do that?

I guess I would have to cut a small part of the bulb with the growth. I want to flask it as it is easier to deal with Australian customs with flasks.
Hoping that some of the experts on the board can help me out here. I currently have a Prosthechea Elfin in bloom, and a Cattleya intermedia var coerulea which is due to open any day now. I was thinking about whether I might be able to cross the two? Would it work? I see some other Catt x Prosthechea crosses listed on the RHS site, but am unsure if this one would work. Can anybody advise? I have heard some info about the pollinia count in some Catt's but I am a newbie to this so any info provided would be greatly appreciated!!

Any one using this, especially on Phals?

I bought this in early Spring, $22 for .5 oz. I was planning on using it on only my favorite Phals but one drop per node on only my favorites, hardly seemed worth it when I took a look at all the potential growth from all the bare spikes in my collection. A rough estimate of about 75 spikes and I decided to just apply the Keiki Pro to everything!

Within a few days the spike ends begin swelling and growing. So far, about 80% of the spikes have grown buds and the oldest ones that were closest to blooming....blasted instead. I suspect it's because of the intense heat (intense!!!!!) we're experiencing here in Fla. and all my Phals are on a screened patio.

I first started applying this when the blooms had all fallen from the spikes but that soon changed due to inpatience and it was applied to even those spikes filled with flowers. The instructions state that to induce keiki growth, the KP should be applied on bare spikes after the blooms are spent and to promote more spiking/blooms, apply the KP soon after the initial blooming occurs. So far, I'm noticing no difference in production. They all start out swelling at the tips, the flowered spikes showed nothing until the blooms fell and being that I began applying the KP near the end of the blooming, I'm not sure if this is why the growth has been consistently the same between the bare spikes and the ones still holding blooms.

Though it's noted that spiking can occur with this stuff, my intention was to get keiki growth and not more blooms. About 15 of the spikes treated so far, have begun growing (what I'm hoping will become) keikis and not, spikes....too soon to tell but the nodes are swelling and growth of either keikis or spiking is going on. The spikes with these keikis :crossfing all started out the same....with swelling at the tips and the beginnings of what look like potential buds. So far, 3 of the growths from the nodes where Keiki Pro was applied are definitely, keikis. Additionally, one basal keiki which I think was a coincidence and nothing to do with the Keiki Pro, unless the solution dripped down from the spike on to the base of the Phal, don't know? That spike never produced any growth or budding from the KP but I've now got the basal keiki, the only one that seemed unaffected except for the basal keiki????

I would be very interested in hearing from others who have used/are using Keiki Pro or similar and what you've gotten out of it.

Doc, if I'm remembering correctly, don't you use Keiki Gro? which is similar and a paste, right?

P.S. Last year I didn't get one keiki from any of my Phals. I was disappointed. This year, 5 keikis so far...one just separated from the momma plant and all these keikis were produced naturally...not from Keiki Pro.

I've never tried seed propagation... therefore I am jumping in blindly

Just got this Podangis 2 months ago with a spike developing. After all the flowers were opened for a few days, I self pollinated them (crossing the pollen between the flowers). And the pods are already starting to grow...
Just the beginning of a new story...
I still don't know what I'm going to do if I get seeds, but I have time to think about it (about 130 days before pods are ready apparently...)

Anyone here tried this species?

One of my Phalaenopsis plants has decided to reproduce, but I have a dilemma. One of the flower stalk branches developed a Keiki on either side of the branch and each one threw a root, but now it looks like a third root is growing between the two plantlets. My question is whether it's better to split the Keikis into individual plants or is it alright to attempt to grow both plants as one. I realize that most monopoidal orchids are grown as singles, but do doubles do as well? Any potential problems as the plants mature?

Hi Everyone

Hi Everyone

I have been using a glove box to reflask and flask seed - how I dream of a laminar flow unit. I still get contamination no matter how careful or over-zealous I am with disinfecting.

I have read a link suggesting the use of hydrogen peroxide when potting seedlings. I wonder, could we use 3% Hydrogen Peroxide when reflasking. I am sure many of you have had flasks sent in the mail, arriving looking like a fruit salad or at best agar all over the leaves. If you dont want to pot up, then you reflask, but that for me has so far been hit and miss.

Another possibility is antibiotics - I just found this link for PPM PPM: A Powerful Tool to Prevent or Eliminate Microbial Contamination in Plant Tissue Culture

Now, some countries prohibit the use of antibiotics in flasks. I also know that some species cant take this particular disinfectant.

How do members here reflask and make sure you dont get infections.

Hello and Happy 4th to all of you,

I need some coaching from those of you with success in separating your compots... it will be my first time with this issue. I have several compots with paph babies and need advice on when you seperate them, bark medium they will do best in etc. Is it going to be difficult seperating them or are their roots very minimal? Should they be keep moist? (I would think so)
If it is too hard to explain if you can pass on an accurate web site you like and trust.

Thk you for your time and consideration!!
Take care and love those Orchids!

I have been so inspired since join this forum last week that I have pollinated two of my orchids. I pollinated my Milt. Red Tide and my Noid Zygoneria with other flowers on the same plant. I tried two flowers on each and I think it worked. The column has closed around the pollinia on all four flowers and the flower color has changed on the two Milt. flowers.

Does anyone know how long it will take for the seed pod to mature?

I'm pretty excited that my first try appears to have worked!

Hi Everyone

I have Coelogyne Shilleriana seed that has germinated. It was very rapid at about 1 month from sowing. Pics attached. I did two flasks.

Interestingly, the flask that I sowed lightly has germinated better in that the seed shows little shoots. The heavily sown flask - ooops, got heavy handed - has germinated, but is less vigorous. I wonder if I should attempt to reflask it now., The seedlings are not much bigger than seed so far, but are really green.

The other flask is much bigger. I think they can grow for some time in this flask.

I will post pics of the heavy sown flask tomorrow.

Hi Everyone

You can propagate Thunia species by cutting 2 inch sections of old canes and putting them into spagnum or potting mix. Do you think it is would be possible to sterilise the cut sections as you would Phalaenopsis stems and grow them in flask like meristems?

I would like to do this so I can export them to Australia easily in flask.

Those of you that know me know that I came to the OB looking for info on seed germination. That was almost two years ago and I've come a long way, due mostly to all of the smart, enthusiastic, encouraging members here on the OB - particularly you here in the propagation forum. :bowing

I've been able to set up a cheap, home-made flasking "lab" in my kitchen using no specialized equipment. I've been able to successfully germinate several species and recently deflasked my own first few batches. The time has flown by (as it does that when you are having fun), and so many of you have contributed to my progress. I've come a long way in a short time and in a small town with virtually no other help. Here's how it all panned out.

I'm really a native orchid nut with a tropical orchid hobby. I wanted to do something for our natives here so I began researching propagation. To learn the process and practice my technique, I started with some seed from OSP - Enc. tampensis. They came up well and I was hooked. I started selfing every species that bloomed just to get the seed. I began trading and sharing with OB members all of the country and one in Canada. I soon realized that the ability to germinate seed leads me to the possibility of making and growing out my own crosses. Inspired by another OM member, I began dabbling in hybridizing. Now I'm trading (and mooching) pollen instead of seed.:blushing:

To date, I've made 8 or 9 potential new crosses and have the first 2 or 3 in flask already. I'm really excited about the possibilities. Thinking about plants from a breeding perspective instead of just a collection standpoint has really increased the overall quality and variety of my collection. I now look for plants with breeding potential instead of just a small price tag. I feel more deliberate in my progress and more intimately connected with my orchids. I just wanted to send a heart-felt thank you to all that have helped me along my way. I could not have done it without this great forum, or its great members. :thankyou

I have been using rainwater since January and my orchids seem to be thriving. The water is collected from roof run-off with the ususal gutter system. With the Spring growth, the oak tree catkins collected on the roof and the rain run-off was stained a dark color...probably tannins....and there was a lot of very find debris that settled to the bottom of the barrel.

I have been using this water, but I don't know if I am doing short term or long term damage to the plants. I know that the pH is about 6.5.

Does anyone have similar experience or opinions if this is a good, bad or neutral thing to do. I would rather not go back to tap water because of the solids and I don't think I need an R/O system for the 5 or 6 gallons per week that I use.

Any suggestions?

Lots of people test it before they add the agar, but agar will decrease your pH. If the media is hot enough to melt the agar, then it is too hot for my pH pen. I would use the strips, but the agar I'm using has charcoal in it and that makes the strips hard to read.
What temperature should I store my orchid seed at? I have been keeping it in a cool cupboard with some silica in a plactic bag to keep it dry.
Today, I was given seed by a friend who keeps it in the fridge crisper.

What is the best temperature? Is this variable with species and will it adversly affect germination

Well I figure there is a first time for everything.

I watched a pollination demonstration recently so I thought I would give it a go.

Yesterday early morning, I pollinated some of my chids. I figure if I get anything, I'll figure out what to do with the seed pods later (probably send to Meyers).

Tell me what you think:

Zygopetalum 'Blue Bird' x self

Ascocenda Khun Nok Nathakun x Renantanda Hew Mun (both as pod plant and parent plant - terminology?)

Dendrobium aggregatum (a.k.a. Den lindleyi) IOSPE PHOTOSx Den Oriental Smile 'Fantasy' AD/AOS (both as pod plant and parent plant)

Brassoepilaeliocattleya (Toshie Akoi x West Connet Gold) x self

Oncidium harrisonianum x Tolumnia Genting 'Volcano' (both as pod plant and parent plant)

Onc. harrisonianum x Wilsonara Hot Spot (harrisonianum as the pod plant) - I want to try the Wilsonara as the pod plant but I have to wait for the next spike to open.

This one I messed up - Wilsonara Hot Spot x Brassada O-Rang 'Utan' (both as pod plant and parent) Wrong alliances...don't know what I was thinking. Ooopers :dumb::oops_sign :duh:

Both the Brsa and the Wils have multiple spikes so no biggie.

Question - I have the Haraella retrocalla with 2 spikes and I want to try it too. It is the SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Vandeae, SUBTRIBE Aeridinae.
IOSPE PHOTOS

Do you think it will work with:

Epidendrum Hokulea (Joseph Lii x cinnabarinum) SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Epidendreae, SUBTRIBE Laeliinae. - I really want to try this one as the colors of the Hokulea are SO red and vibrant.

I'm pretty sure it will work with:

Ascda Khun Nok Nathakhun SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Vandeae, SUBTRIBE Aeridinae

and the

Rntda Hew Mun SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Vandeae, SUBTRIBE Aeridinae

Hi Everyone

What am I doing wrong with my agar media? It contains charcoal, banana and coconut juice for sowing.

My problem is it is splitting I guess you would say. The charcoal is lumpy and sitts toward the bottom of the media when set. Shouldnt it be a evenly mixed? Will this matter much to the seed or with the nutrients be affected due to the stratification?

Why is it happening? Am I making the pressure cooker too hot or cooking it too long? I have tried a hot stove and at medium heat, for 15 mins to 25 mins. Still the same result. I dont have a guage on my pressure cooker.

I appreciate any advice.

Hi All,

Newbie here, hope I'm on the right forum... and this is likely to be long, sorry!

Anyway, bought 2 flasks at the weekend market in Bangkok a week ago. Thought I would start off with something easy like Phalaenopsis, as growing on is a first for me... I ended up buying a flask of Cattleya and a flask of Chiloschista Viridiflora... BUT, when I startd researching the chilo's when I got back, they did not remotely resemble the adult plants that the stallholder pointed out!

The Catts are beautiful strong, healthy plants (about 50), but I am really worried about the Chilo's. There is about 50 or so plants in the flask, a tangle of roots, and some roots has started to turn yellow and translucent, if that makes sense. It was very hot on the day, about 38 C, I carried them around flat in a padded bag, but are worried that they were injured somehow.

Would you recommend:
-using a heated propagator?
-using a fungicide?
-dipping in a weakend rooting hormone solution?
-spagnum moss ok? or very fine bark?
-would it be ok to leave some agar on the roots, would not want to damage them.
-should I remove the yellow/translucent roots?

Or should I stop worrying and just get on with it!

Any advice on deflasking would be much appreciated!

If you have always wanted to know how to flask your own orchid seeds but did not know how to get started this thread is intended as a guide for orchid enthusiasts with no prior experience in flasking. We hope to get you get going so you can have the thrill of watching your seeds germinate and grow:)

Many of the people who post on this forum have a lot of expertise and have perfected their techniques so they can flask easily and quickly. We are asking for those folks to participate in this thread to help others get started by posting a brief note about their flasking techniques and after we have a nice collection of those posts we can go back and break it down into steps so that it is very easily understood.

Hopefully, we can break flasking down and demystify the steps so anyone who reads this thread will be have no problem getting started. There is already a lot of info on the propagation forum but having it one place will enable OB'ers to print it out and use it as a guide.

So.....anyone with flasking experience, we need you!! Please consider adding your valuable post to this thread. If does not have to be long but just go through briefly what you do to get those seeds into those flasks and growing:D We will be breaking those posts down into steps to make it crystal clear but we cannot do it without YOU.

Is there a brave soul who would like to go first?:waving :

I'm not sure whether I placed this thread in a right place, but I wanted to ask you whether you know some good online vendor which sells flasks worldwide. I live in Europe, and getting plants over internet is so difficult because of postage and other certificates. Flasks do not require so much documents, so I decided to try ordering some species flasks. Do you have any recommendation for me?

Okay, so I'm not actually fed up, I just wanted to use all that alliteration. But I AM frustrated. I've made 2 attempts at home-flasking in a sterile glovebox, and got bad results. I don't actually think that my problem is contamination, however. I understand sterile procedure, and found several step-by-step flasking procedures online and used them to design my own sterile flasking checklist and procedure. It seemed pretty solid, but I'm left with a bunch of jars full of useless media.

Typing out everything that I did and where I think I went wrong would be WAY too long for a thread, so I guess I'll need someone to email back-and-forth with me a little. My addy is bigsubjo@msn.com, just send me an email with something orchidy in the subject and I'll hit you back with the rundown of my procedure/results. I'd really prefer a response from people who have experience successfully flasking at home, if y'all don't mind. Thanks in advance, I can't wait to bring bunches and bunches of little orchids into the world!

The little plants are actually on the glass because I guess I moved it around too much, but I did swirl it around and get them back on the media. They germinated in 10 days, Bletilla striata, on OSP1, a homemade media using banana baby food. (These seeds were given to me by a generous OB'er).

The other flask is Cattleya grossi which took 28 days to germinate on the same media. They are still too small to photograph well, but maybe soon:)

I used a homemade glove box from an acrylic storage box w/lid with holes cut in it for the gloves which were duct taped in place. Used an old piece of glass for the top of the box so I could see in the box and I duct taped that to the top of the box also. :biggrin:Gotta love that duct tape!

I collected jars w/lids from folks on Freecycle so they were free. Some seeds were given to me from another OB member and some I purchased from the Orchid Seed Bank Project very cheaply.

I did not spend a lot of money at all and many of the things you would need you probably already have in your home, and much of the information I used was collected on this site as well as 'Google' info.
Also I have a growth off of an orchid i just bought and i was wandering what u guys thought as to removing and planting by itself.

Here is my new flasking glove box I made tonight.

I've tried several flasking labs around Bangkok. I didnt like the "we're the lab and know more about your seed than you" attitude I got. Not bad when they had not a clue what my species was and tried to find a common name in Thai . twice I was told the lab would decide what was suitable media and my input was not needed:((

I also need to reflask some phals that arrived a bit tossed around in their flask. I couldnt get that done here either unless they were small enough to go into a whisky bottle.

Fine, they dont get my money any more and I am going to do it myself. I 've a good source of media in Australia who give great advice:bowing http://www.westernorchids.com.au/index.html

I did my research on the web and here is the method and result.

You will need:

1 large clear plastic storage container.
1 Plastic sheeting (I used a shower curtain which is tough)
1 a stanley knife
4 plastic glue (do a compatibility test first - my glue bubbled a little under the plastic, but it seems ok.
5 someone who can sew or some long rubber/plastic arm protectors if you can get them.

I would like to try to prapagate orchid through seed. I would like to try this with the mini phalaenopsis or the 'normal' phalaenopsis. I allready searched the list from the OSP, but they hardly have any phalaenopsis'.

Is there anyone on this board who has phalaenopsis seed from either a mini phalaenopsis or a normal phalaenopsis and is willing to send it to me? Offcourse I will pay for the shipping costs. It would make me very happy to have some Phalaenopsis seeds! :D
I prefer white colored phalaenopsis.

Greetings,
Sanne

p.s. I can pollinate my own phalaenopsis' (and I will do that) but I would like to try propagation of orchids in the next couple of months. And I have to wait 6 months before I can harvest my own seeds ;)

When taking the pollen from one orchid (e.g., a paphiopedilum), can I just snip off only a single anther cap with the pollen? Will this cause any harm to the flower? Also, when pollinating a phalaenopsis flower (or any other orchid with multiple flowers), what happens to the other flowers that have not been pollinated? Do they just continue to thrive as normal? I am clearly new to this...thanks in advance!

Hi Everyone

I am getting some blue Phalaenopsis Violaceas from the USA (Orchidview Nursery). I will return to Australia next year and it would be much better to leave them in flask - it is easier with our quarantine there.

However, given the postal system, I expect them to arrive needing reflasking. I need advice on reflasking larger seedlings. I tried to find a local lab in Bangkok to do the job, but hit brick walls. All the ones a Thai friend contacted - over 7 - only seem to be iterested in doing small seedlings in whisky bottles.

I intend to use big jam jars for more room and ease to get the seedling into it. When placing the seedlings, I guess it is best to have the media soft. Do I try to push the seedlings into the media a little or just sit them on top? Are there any other ways?

Also, what to do if any leaves or roots are damaged? Should I remove them. Sterilize? I guess rinse agar off the leaves using sterilised water.

I appreciate any advice you can give on this. This is my first time at flasking. I'd rather get a lab to do it, but no chance on that is seems.

Many thanks

Brett

Stem Propagation with Ghosoff!

:helloOkay I wanted to start this page just as a little blog on what is going on with my stem propagation!! Because yes it is my first time and I...

:helloOkay I wanted to start this page just as a little blog on what is going on with my stem propagation!! Because yes it is my first time and I hope it is helpful for others. First off in this page I will explain to you the steps I took and the test, well experiments that took place while in the process of stem propagation.

Well to start off I got some media which is suitable for stem propagation of Phalaenopsis's. In the process of making the agar media first off I only wanted 500 mL so I measured out half the required amount of media which was 12 .something grams. Then I mixed it in with sterilized water and stirred it around for a little bit after which I put it in the microwave for eight minutes. When I took it up the microwave I stirred it some more and then administered it to the little jars which are seen in the picture. I tried to put 25 mL but in the end it became more in some of the jars because I still had left overs.

Initially I made 22 jars but my pressure cooker is not big enough to fit them all in, so what I did was do a little experiment and I put 10 in the microwave and the other 12 in the pressure cooker. Well I placed the 10 in the microwave in there for 9 minutes with the lids but after they were done I quickly fastened lids. In the bottom of the pressure cooker I filled it with 1 inch to 2 inches of water and place most the jars on a metal pan that I had sitting a little bit above the water then I placed three on top of the rest of the jars. I put them in the pressure cooker for 30 minutes after which I fell a sleep and woke up I went to the kitchen and took them off the stove which had been turned off after 30 minutes I brought it into my laminar flow hood which was self built by a source.

Then I left them there for a day or two, maybe just a day. Then I went on orchid board and studied some, other places about techniques of sterilizing the stems.

So how mine goes is I take the cuttings of the plant no bigger than 2 inches. Then I put it in a jar with one drop of dish soap and regular tap water and shook it for about 5 minutes then I took them out from there and placed them a 10% bleach solution and left them in there for 15 minutes, which inside my laminar flow hood I used my sterilized scalpel and cut off the bracts and also I cut the stem down some on both sides above the node and below so the stem culture would be 3/4 of an inch to 1 inch. Then I put them in a 5% bleach solution for 10 minutes, shaking it every 2 to 3 minutes. This bleach solution should be discarded after that, and rinse them with sterilized water three times each time the solution should be discarded. And make sure to keep your utensils in alcohol, flaming them before uses and that was about it.
Actually in the end the microwave and the pressure cooker both came out sterilized. The only difference was the ones from the microwave had less agar in the end and the agar was harder. The ones sterilized in the pressure cooker was looser and looked like there was more in the jar, then when I started.

But I did this over a period of days, putting the actual stems in there!! Some were my newly purchased orchid's spikes!!

But one thing I did experiments on other than the microwave and the pressure cooker, was one of the jars from the microwave. I think the media boiled away almost all the way but there was still a little bit left. So I decided to put some microbials in there. I will add more later!! Hope you like it so far but I will edit it later this is the draft!! I would have took more pictures of the process but Iwasn't thinking about it aat that time!!! Sorry!

Hi Everyone

I just deflasked my Cymbidium Canaliculatum Alba seedlings today. They are in my wardian case now at 80F and 85% to 90% humidity. I have noted a little dehydration of the finer leaves on the smaller plants and the usual damage to leaves from shipping in the mail. I turned one of the fans off and have just one smaller one running. Is there anything to be worried about with the dehydration - which seems to have stopped now. These are the first Cyms I have ever deflasked, so I am not to familiar with how they react to it. The first pics is just out of flask
The following pics are showing the dehydration after a few hours. Sorry, this is the best I can do with a phone camera.
i received my orchid flasks today containing (1x C,fort motte "leopard" x B cucullate,1x B.digbyana, 1x ctsm Pileatum,1x C.violacea ,sent to me from florida, they are all about one - two inches high and all have pretty good roots and leaves growing on them so look strong! which is great, i took them out today rinsed of the gell from there roots in tepid water and potted them on into small brown pots with spagnum moss surrounding and covering the roots, i now have them under a plastic dome to keep in the humidity in a u.v lighted terrainium that is about 78-80 degrees in the day with drop at night, i will mist them gently making sure they arnt soaking but kept hydrated to avoid drying out, am i doing this right as i havent done this before as always have had fully grown plants. thanks guys for any help that comes my way, cant wait to see them when they are a bit bigger, as to be honest i dont really know much about the typoe i have received, and i am new to orchid keeping but good with plants and would like some minatures to mount on wood:lol::waving.

The plant finished blooming in October, but I have just now noticed the pod.
From the pix attached is there any way to tell how close to maturation the pod is, and any advice on how to sow from a green pod would be very welcome!
Also - I've read mixed reports on supplemental feedings of the mother plant... opinions on this would be welcome as well.

Hi

I have several Zygopetalum types that is growing out of their pots and finally I have a green house that I can leave them out in and give them appropriate temperatures (and maybe even better humidity as it gets below 40% indoors during winter!!). So I'd quite like to divide them and thus get more plants out of it..... and I think the plants prefer the same (one of them actually broke the pot with its roots!!)

I have never really done this before and was hoping for a few good tips and hints.

They all have new growth going at the moment. I'm using plastic pots and bark, mainly because that's what I can get my hands on in normal plant shops around here.

Thanks!

I'm relatively new to flasking orchid seeds. I'd like to start growing my own orchid seedlings from seed. The plants I plant to pollinate have tiny flowers and quite possibly tiny seed pods. I don't think sending them to a lab would be very practical. I've read articles on how to do it, and it sounds rather complicated. So...I have two questions:

1. Are there ways to properly sterilize the flasking jars without an autoclave or a pressure cooker? I've read somewhere about using an oven or steam from a pot of boiling water.

2. What are some good home made recipes for flasking media that any of you guys here use? The use of laboratory media isn't within my budget at the moment.

Agar is inexpensive here and I can get it at an Asian supermarket. I've read some people using mixtures of agar and potato water, agar and carrots, agar and pineapple juice, or agar and bananas.

Thanks.

Does anyone out there use this? I bought some yesterday, strictly for my Phals. Not interested in basal keikis but hopefully to produce some off the spikes. It says to use on inflorescence that have already bloomed so my next question is...has anyone used it before the blooms were spent? Is there a likelihood of greater success if used on the lowest nodes vs. higher nodes? And, does it make a difference if I put it on more than one node on the spike? Better or lesser odds if I use on several nodes? The instructions say to peel back the bract that covers the node but how much do I peel? Am I looking to slightly break the skin and reach fresh tissue?

At $22 for 1/2 oz., I hope to get this right, first try. I know there's no guarantee, I just don't want to be wasteful with this.

Thanks for passing on your advice. :bowing

:hello

I put this up earlier on the beginners section and i was told to put it up under propogation. I´m just looking out for any tips and advise. This was my earlier post:

''Hello all!

I´m new to this forum and i need some help with a ludisia orchid that i have. One or two of its flowers have formed, what i believe is seed pods. One of the flowers, has enlarged so much n it is turning green. I should mention that some weeks ago, I tried to pollinate the plant.

Well I´m a newbie with this, but if i would like to grow those ludisia seeds, what should i do and when do i know its time to pluck the pod of the flower stem?''

Well this morning i noticed a brown line running through the center of the seed pod. It is light brown in color.

This would be my first try at growing orchid seeds, if at all there is a seed in there. Can anyone help?? Do i pluck it off the plant or do i wait till it falls? Any kind of advise is really appreciated :)

Hey all, I'm new here and new to orchids. My girlfriend got me into them and i've been amazed ever since!

We have one Phal, which has bloomed (it had 13) and its done. I had no idea that you were supposed to clip the spike after it bloomed and withered.. so it stayed there for a good long while with a crispy spike there. Will that damage the plant? The leaves look fine and so do the roots so I think its okay but I'm not sure.

My MAIN question here was about another orchid that we have. It was a gift from her grandmother (she found it on sale somewhere.. so that tells you about the supposed quality of it) and she had actually planted in the ground for about a day and a half before I pulled it out. I have rinsed off the dirt and the roots are very very soggy. The plant itself is a dendrobium (red emperor or something like that) and the stalks that it has are all fairly healthy looking, but then there is one that is almost the color of sand.. It looks like I should put that stalk out of its misery but i'm not sure If i could coax it back to life.... There is one fairly new stalk/growth that was hanging off the side, so I stood it up and supported it so hopefully it will start growing straight. I'd like to know what suggestions you all have for me; how to dry it out? any other suggestions would be very appreciated.

ALSO:
The dendrobium is potted with moss (peat probably) and as you all know its retaining a lot of moisture. I'd like to pot it with bark, but i was wondering if it would be okay to simply pull pine bark off of a tree or if it needs to be specific bark. I would of course clean the bark well before using it and what not, but I was just wondering if that was absolutely and idiot/beginner thing to ask or not.. :P

thanks again for reading all the way through this long rambling post!

Chad

EDIT:
First post and I already did something stupid!! I meant to put this in the Beginner's discussion forum.. doh!

Hi

I am about to flask some pods of a yellow Spathoglottis hybrid with what I think is a semi-alba of Phaius Tankervillae. The Spathoglottis is the pod parent. It is now at 40 days.

I have read green pod time for Spathoglottis in hot weather is 45 days, 55 in cold. Well in Bangkok there is only hot

As this is an intergeneric hybrid, will it make any difference to picking time? I am noticing some rose/red colour beginning slowly in the base area of the pods. I'd like some opinions on this as it is my first hybrid and I want to get it right.

I have 3 pods. I had a fourth pod, but it seemed to not grow as robustly as the others and split today with some, but little seed.

A couple of weeks ago I divided my Miltoniopsis Bert Fields 'Eileen' into 3 separate pots. Since then each of them has had leaves turning yellow and dropping off. The medium I used was just the same type of regular (medium size) orchid bark mix that the original plant had been in. Should I have maybe used a more moisture retentive medium, such as sphagnum moss until the new roots become more well established? The plants are obviously in smaller pots now and do seem to be drying out pretty fast. Is this the problem or am I merely experiencing a normal reaction in this situation?

Any feedback on how this should be dealt with would be very much appreciated.

Hello! I am new to this board and am also a beginner orchid grower.

My phalaenopsis orchid, which I have had for about a year and a half or so, is growing a keiki on it's spike. It took me a long time to even find out what that new growth was called!:)

I have a couple questions concerning this. First, I had been thinking about repotting my plant for the first time. Is this a bad idea with the keiki? It is also growing flower buds on a couple other areas. Should I wait, or is it okay to do it before the buds bloom?

Secondly, how should I take care of the keiki, and when is it okay to separate it from the original orchid?

Thank you in advance for any advice you might be able to offer!

Hopefully soon I will be flasking some Cattleya seeds that someone on OB is sending me soon. I'm not doing home flasking, I'm flasking in my university's labs, so I have all the ingredients at my disposal to make my own medium. A friend at the lab flasks seeds too, but is not happy with the medium he used (modified version of an Arabidopsis tissue culture medium) and has low germination rates. So I'm trying to do some research on the medium I need.

I was thinking of ordering (or finding the recipe to make myself) of a Phytotech medium, but saw on their website that have so many difference products! What's the difference between all the mediums? The bottom line is, which is best for Catts, if it even matters at all? Do some mediums eliminate the need for replating?

Hello guys I want to try pollinating and propagating a phal, I've read a lot of articles and posts and I'm worried about the media. I want to use a media I can make at home without having to buy it online. I know I will need to buy the agar and I have 20-20-20 and root hormone already. So is there any receipe for media that doesn't require a medium powder, just the normal stuff I have at home + the agar.
Also, I'm afraid about contamination when replating is there a media recipe I can use that will allow me to not have to reflask, one where the seeds can germinate and the seedlings grow until mature enough for deflasking. In other words a media that works for both so there is no need to replate. I know i will have to open a ventilation.
Thanks for your help.

Hi Everyone

I found 2 plants of Pleione Maculata with pods at the market today here in Bangkok. I would like your opinions on the whether or not the pods will mature as they were bare root and not many viable roots at that. I have planted them in lightly packed live moss in an open slat pot and keeping them in an airconditioned room with my flasks under lights.

About how far from maturity are they? Do they need any special treatment when it comes to sowing in flask? Here are the pics.

:hello

Does anybody know how to preserve pollinia so it can be used later in a cross? I'm asking because I've got a couple plants I'm considering for a cross (Masd. rechingeriana which is in bud :), and either Masd. triangularis or tovarensis. I've yet to make up my mind :blushing:), but they won't be flowering at the same time, so I'm hoping there's some way I can save the pollinia from one for a little while until the other flowers.

Thanks for any and all ideas!

Well, seeing as I have limited growing space at the moment (though that growing space is still mostly empty...I'll get around to filling it!), the time has come to start dividing some of my miniatures to keep my specimens at reasonable sizes, and to provide me with some resources to acquire new plants. Now, most of my parent plants are mounted, and it would be the obvious option on what to do with the divisions. But, seeing as most of these can also be grown in pots, and not everyone is set up for mounts...would it make more sense to pot them up in loose net pots, to give the interested party the option to keep it potted, or to mount it themselves? After all, it's easier to mount a potted plant, than vice versa. Thanks!

Guys, not sure if this is the right forum to post this query but if not I apologise.
My preference for growing orchids is in pine bark in a clay pot. Lately I have topped it off with a layer of sphagnum moss. Other growers here prefer a cultiwool (rockwool)/polystyrene mix in plastic pots. Whenever I buy a plant at out local society I always repot out of that mixture. I have noticed that in the cultiwool mix and in my bark/sphagnum mix the plants produce very few roots and in my collection the roots do not penetrate the bark but stay in the sphagnum. The question is do orchid plants produce roots proportional to the water content of the medium. Some of my plants with few roots actually topple over as they are not anchored down.

the second is green light.. root tone..with fungicide
its main chemical is 1-naphthaleneacetamide and thiram ( tetramethylthiuram)
i have both.. and of course ihave a rescue cattleya that has one little pokey root that is stil good the others are toast..
if ones of these will help without harming the plant.. would love to hear about it. i also have a couple phals rescues that are the same way lol..

Hey there guys. I have always been a fan of Orchids, and now one of mine has produced 3 seed "beans."

The seeds inside of them are extremely small and light, bursting out like big chunks of dust. Here is a pciutre showing the beans:

I have read many places on how to care and grow orchides from seeds, but most of the things I cannot get.
So, what Ive done instead is:

Sterlized container with cotton wool. Taking some chunks of the bark/charcoal from the mother plant's pot and also some old roots and put in there. Damp water and then sprayed the seeds around.

Do the seeds need sunlight? And how often should I water them?

thanks a bunch guys!

I guess I should have posted this on the propagation forum.....:scratchhead:

I reserved a flask of Laelia purpurata var. carnea from the Meyers conservatory. The webpage indicates that they remove the plantlets from the flask and send them to you in a sterile packaging. is this recommended?

Now. How do I go about growing these things??? Is this process the same for EVERY orchid??? Once the plants are out of the flask, do you put them in wet moss? is the moss fertilized or not? How often do you mist/water? fungicide or bacteriacide or not? Light requirements?

I've been reading up on this and I'm slightly confused. Some people recommend spraying fungicide etc. to kill the nasties, other sites indicate that this may be harmful to the plants.

As for fertilizer, do you super-fertilize (meaning use a stronger ratio of fertilizer) or under-fertilize? KLN, MSU or S.T.E.M?

Also, I'm not too sure about the community pot thing. How big/small does the tray need to be? i purchased a propagation tray online, along with the dividers (the plastic inserts divide the tray into 72 parts and a dome to check humidity. Do I need to purchase a humidity meter? if so, where can i find one? Do I really need a propagation mat--this to me looks like a heating pad--but then most sites don't mention this.

I know I'm asking like a zillion questions, but I want to start off on the right foot when/if I get the plants.

Thanks!!!:bowing :bowing :bowing :bowing :bowing :bowing

I cross bred a couple of phals one of them the mother plant being my peloric golden bells.. the father being a unknown but beautifull full form flower with a deep deep purple almost i swear black.anda white phal bred to the purbple the pods are developing.. and my attempt last year failed at growing the seed myself. so i want to find someone or a company that is honest.. to grow them to i guess the size you need before potting? i thought i found one.. i emailed them a couple of times but i never heard back.. dissapointing..
i rather not (not trying to be stingy lol) share the seeds all around just yet.. as i want to see what my flowers will produce .. i know there are some who will flask for a certain amount of the babies/flasks in return.. i might consider that if i am given credit for thier breeding.
. and then again not having ever done this before.. i have no clue how it all works out.. still a begginer in alot of things..

Hello,

I bought this Dendrobium Orchid at Lowes, it wasn't looking to good and it was on discount, my heart went out to it, I broke it home and replanted it and I watered it really good then I transplanted it.. Looks like its till alive the stock or canes ??? not sure what they are really called I never grew a orchid before.... not alone know what kind they were..... I know the stock is still looking green and the leaves are in good shape so I figured the thing was still alive...... I been watering it once a week letting it dry out between waters... Just wanted to see what you all thought what the thoughts of this thing was, and what it looks like... .Does it have hope for regrowth and possible blooming... the bottom stocks or canes where small when i got it... looks like there getting bigger and they are green.. but the tips are brown..... hmmmm any thoughts would be great... should i keep watering it once a week and just let it go ?? or should i cover it with a bag and water it once a week.... ??????????????? Also.. should i get some fertilizer and do that once a month .. ? Does it have hope ?????????

HELP :)

Hi everyone!

Newbie here. I was looking through the Orchid Seedbank Project's seedlist and must confess...I don't know what many of those labels mean!

I'd like to learn more about propagating seeds...so besides technique, what am I looking for in a seed? And I don't mean breed of chid, color, etc. but...

Does it matter how many pods a plant has produced? Like are only the first 1 or 2 viable?

When it was harvested? Is it ever safe to assume that they are stored well with the OSP and the donors?

% Embryos? Help me understand what that means. :dumb:

Spontaneous capsule?

In short, if you're ordering seeds from *somewhere*, what do you look for in order to increase your chances of success (independent of actual flasking technique)?

Thanks so much! BTW I've spent the last 3 hours reading threads in Propagation...don't tell anyone!!

Hi
I pollinated one of my NOID Phals at the beginning of October. It has developed a fair sized seed pod now almost three months along. I have a couple of questions though. First, how long does the seed pod need to stay on the mother plant for? I have heard six months previously but am not too sure. Secondly, we are in the midst of the big freeze right now, about -25 deg Celsius, would you think it safe to transport the mother plant home at this time? I am on xmas vacation for the next two weeks, so I do not want to leave her alone for two weeks with no watering. Very often I do purchase new plants in this type of weather and the greenhouses will typically just wrap the plant in paper wrap and then put a plastic bag over that. Do you think that should protect the pod?

There, now that I have your attention:waving , I have a question for all you flaskers. How long do you usually keep flasked seed before tossing it.....i.e.if the seed hasn't germinated, how long do you usually keep it around before deciding the seed isn't viable? I've had seed germinate in five days, and I've had seed that germinated in six weeks. I'm getting low on space in the nursery, and was considering weeding out some old inactive ones. I wanted to get some opinions before I started tossing them. What is the longest you have had a seed take to germinate? Any opinions are appreciated!
