So I knew I was getting in over my head yet couldn't stop myself and I ended up getting a giant St Swithin and Deena Nicol and now that I have them I'm hoping someone experienced in their care can give me some guidance. I know the basic culture info but there are so many other important details to make them thrive.
Any experienced growers our there who are willing to share their tips?
I also have a question about repotting... it appears that the Deena Nicol was last repotted in July 2003 and the St. Swithin in Feb 2006. The Deena Nicol's potting media definitely looks broken down. Should I repot them both now or wait until spring?
What potting mixes have people found best for these two?
In your experience how much light do they need?

I bought a Paph jackii x armeniacum from a reputable supplier at RHS Tatton Park summer show, in flower. (1st pic). Within about three weeks the flower dropped off and I left the stem to die back a little before I would remove it. That was about another four weeks ago. Instead of dying back, the pod behind the flower (the ovary?) is still green.
My questions are:
Does this mean it got fertilised at the growers? I didn't have any other Paphs in flower at that time.
What do I do if it has set seed? Remove it so that the plant saves its energy for further growth?
Or have a go at raising Noid Paphs from seed?
All comments would be appreciated

When I removed it from it's old home, I realized it had 3 actively growing roots. I'm fairly confident they would have, inevitably, gotten beat up a bit during the repot. would this be likely to stop their growth? I really hope that doing the repot didn't jeopardize their health.
Also, is it ok that I placed the plant in a clear pot? I did so, because I have a tendency to overwater, and feel this will help me not do so.

The spike is now about 1.5"-2" tall, and it's starting to lean with the weight of the bud. At what point should I add a support stick to keep it growing straight upwards? I don't want to clip it and then inhibit it's growth, but I don't want it flopping over, either! This is my first experience - any advice would be appreciated!

I found a place that sells some very large Paphs and I got a list of what is available. I'd like some advice on what I should get or if I'm crazy for even thinking about doing this. Here is what they have:
15+++ growths Deena Nicol for $85, St Swithin 9+ growths for $70 and 15 growths for $85, Susan Booth 9+growths for $70 and 15 growths for $85, Primechild 9 growths for $70, Lady Isabel 15 growths for $150.
I'm really leaning towards the St Swithin.
Am I crazy? It's not like I'm a grad student who his broke or anything!:rofl:

I was researching the name...Okay, I got these Paphs from a going out of business sale and they have tags Paphiopedilum St. Swithin x primulinum.
I was researching the name information so I can enter it into my Journal and also so I can make sure the extra one is labeled correctly before I send it to its new home and I am puzzled. :scratchhead:
I find that the cross is showing registered as Clifton Booth BUT the other way around. Paph primulinum (seed parent) x Saint Swithin (pollen parent).
So is it more likely that my tags are printed wrong (not handwritten BTW - printed) or do you think I have a different unregistered cross?
OR - am I having a totally dumb moment and am just reading it all wrong (seed parent vs pollen parent).

When I repotted I used a large...So, when I got my first Paph last year it came in a very large grade of bark (much bigger than my Phals are in).
When I repotted I used a large grade mix because I assumed that was what it needed (as that is what it came in).
But now I have read several times that Paphs need a fine grade bark mix and so I'm usure. It seems to be doing OK in the large grade stuff. I've not had massive amounts of growth this year, but there has been some.
Do ALL Paphs need/prefer fine grade, or is it possible some prefer large grade? The Paph I got last year is a complex bulldog type of Paph and the roots are much thicker than something like a Den (which I know needs fine grade for it's fine roots). They are brown and furry roots and are perhaps a tad thinner than a Phal's roots, but not by much.
I bought a new Maudiae Paph yesterday and that is in much finer medium. I haven't looked at it's roots yet so I don't know how they compare.
Can anyone advise me on whether my Bulldog type Paph would be better off in a finer mix :scratchhead:

I have a Paph. 'Maude's Ruby' that is growing like crazy but is developing brownleaf tips. They brown back about an inch and then it stops.

I received this plant as a raffle plant from my local orchid society last June. About a month or so ago, I noticed its first spike coming along. The first bloom you can see here...this is all the bottom slice of good news...
Yesterday I was checking out my plants...like I do every day...and I noticed that the next bud on the spike was laying on the ground...OH NO...I picked it up and noticed a couple of small holes...YIKES...When I looked at the spike where the bud had been, it was hanging on…by just a thread...and a small worm was gorging itself. I won't go into any specific details about what happened next, but suffice it to say that it won't be doing that trick again! :evil:...this is the bad news stuff in the middle....
On closer inspection of the rest of the plant, I found no more wormy things...but I did find...another spike!!!!! Yeah! All's well that ends well! :D

I noticed the other day a growth coming out of the center of the leaves and thought it was just another leaf. I noticed that as it got bigger it started more and more to resemble a closed bud. So this is where we are now. This plant is probably one of my favorites. Even more so now that it's going to bloom for me!! This will be the first orchid I bloomed on my own!! YAY!!
And, on top of having a bud growing, I've got some new growth at the base of the plant! I love this chid!!!

New to the paph world. I have one a Callosum/Ruby Leopard cross and it's currently in spike. My question is that two of the leaves have developed brown spots. They almost look like rust and they do not penetrate through the entire leaf. It's in an east window with all of my phals and receives dappled early morning light and indirect the rest of the day. Is this a sign of too much water? It's in a mix of coco I'm assume which seems rather dense and is quite foreign to me as I'm used to bark. Any help would be appreciated.

I had got the impression that Paph Maudiae was a species. Is that right?
If so, then how come there are both multi-floral and single-floral versions :hmm
Or have I just not understood and there can be this sort of variation in a species... or is it not a species at all... I'm confused :blushing:
I know species can have colour variations so is this something similar?
Also I see a lot of Paphs labled as 'maudiae type'. Assuming that maudiae is a species, then are these hybrids with a lot of maudiae in their ancestry?

I think that one of the newer growths has pleated leaves. Not...A while ago I purchased a Paphiopedilum hybrid (NOID, American). It has green leaves.
I think that one of the newer growths has pleated leaves. Not as the pleated leaves in the Oncidium alliance, but the pleating shows up in the length of the leave. This is the only leave that currently is growing. Any ideas what caused this? Inconsistent watering?
I can't find any pests on the plant. After it finished blooming I repotted it. Roots looked very well. The new medium is much looser than the old medium and might hold water not as good as the old medium.
The plant is in the same medium as my Paphiopedilum Maudiae, which grows nicely after I repotted it.
Both are in my North faced window. As light concerns, the leaves from the Maudiae lost their color from too much light. Now this one gets filtered light from plastic sheeting that I attached to the window. The American hybrid with the pleated (?) leaves still gets full light thru this window and the color of the leaves is the same color as green as when I purchased the plant.
Temperature in this window: 64 - 71 F
Humidity in this window sill: 45-53 %
Currently my digital camera has the hiccups, so sorry, not pictures to share right now.
What do you think? Humidity? Watering? Something else?

Sun, 26 Apr 2009 08:26:38 GMTThis Paph. Lippewunder came from Forestview Gardens, and I'm pleased. As the blooms ages it will take on a more golden colour, it is still greenish. These thick waxy blooms last for the longest of all the paphs for me. This cross is a fast grower too.

I bought a paph seedling at the beginning of last June. Since then it has done NOTHING! It is Paph. Peppermint ( niveum x adductum var. anitum), and was a medium- sized seedling. It looks more like a small seedling to me, with four leaves, each a bit less than and inch long. Anyways, I have been watering it a bit more as I used to underwater as a precaution to prevent root rot. Now that I have the hang of orchid growing, I have been watering my orchids more often and have seen better results in the majority of my other plants. Am I correct to think that seedlings especially prefer moist conditions? Any other tips for seedlings?
Also, I would like to know what the 'var. anitum' means on the tag.

I know water will produce the brown shriveled appearance of the pouch but I specifically NEVER spray the flowers with water. Also, notice the dorsal seems to be shriveling... so what's your thoughts. This is the 2nd year for me with this plant and last year's were just beautiful.....

it.s been our custom to ge each year to the sale and then have breakfast or lunch afterwards.
you have to come early to get the prized plants from tropicals to garden plants. its set up in a big tent and the weather is always cold and misserable.
there is a long lineup and people all carry cardboard boxes for their hoped fornew aquisitions, but mostly to use as a headcover in the misserable wet and rainy weather.
once they let us in, there is a big pushing and shoving to gat to the plants.
wel 14 yrs ago; by the time we managed to get inside, not too much was left over for the pickings. so as not to leave empty handed i grabbed a spiderplant which somehow survived the melee..
it was just barely above freezing but we got it home.
after a few weeks i realized that this was no ordinairy spiderplant; as it had some funny thing portruding from between the leaves.
so my surprise it was a ladyslipper. paph insigne.
this was before computers for us so i grabbed every book from the local library about orchids.
needless to say that was i slipped deep into orchid delerium and havent been cured since.
i have managed to torture many an orchid to a slow but sure death over the years, but this paph refused to follow the others no matter what i threw at it.
i still have it and many divisions from it. well that was my little story.:rofl:
