I purchased my Neofinetia falcata about three years ago and enjoyed slow, but noticeable growth until this year, during which it just seemed to be in stasis. I finally got around to unpotting it, and as I feared, I see some root loss.

My home climate is between 70-80 degrees, likely far too warm for the Neofinetia's liking. Humidity is fairly high as I keep the plant in the master bathroom so that it can enjoy steam from showers and baths. I doubt I've overwatered the plant; if anything, I've sorely neglected it. It was originally potted in peat in a clay pot.

I'd love to save this plant, but I'm unsure as to the next steps. I'd appreciate any insights that you could provide!

Below is a photo of the damage. Thanks!

So this is the first and only pure Neo that I have and I finally got it to bloom! I bought it mounted on a stick and my conditions are just too dry for it, so it didn't really grow for a year or two. I took the whole thing and tossed it in some spag and this year I got new, non-stunted growths and a modest bloom. I had forgotten how AMAZING these guys smell!!! This orchid definitely has the best scent of any orchid.

As for the pics, they aren't great because I used natural light and even around sunset, the glare coming off of the pure white flowers was tough to deal with. I think I just have to play with the settings on my camera to overcome this. Any advice from the Neo experts is definitely welcome!

Looking at this picture, and keeping in mind the tree fern chunk is the size of my thumb (which would be roughly the size of your thumb, give or take...), can you tell me if this Neofinetia falcata or at least some type of Neofinetia? The person that I rescued this from mentioned, in the past, that he owned a "samurai orchid". Would this be it? I know it may be hard to tell since this one has no flowers or sword, or funny helmet with a scary mask, but try your best. As you may see in the photo, this poor little guy is on his third attempt at becoming an adult (kinda like my brother), I would love to help him succeed this time.
Also, if it is Neofinetia falcata, how do I take care of it?

Thanks,
I like it. :)

New to Neo questions (air roots, rock mounts, watering, light)

I am new to orchids (not new to horticulture) inspired by some Neofinetia falcata that I happened upon at Young's Plants in Delta, BC (and transported 2 Neos and one Sedirea japonica home to Toronto, Ontario). In particular I was inspired by laval rock mounted orchids, though I am now familiar with the moss mound technique as well.

I have been doing copious reading, but wanted to ask a couple specific questions to gather opinions.

I wanted to repot the orchids from their cramped and algae encrusted plastic pots and attempt a coupl rock mounts.

The rock mounts turned out ok, but I have questions:

Why does one traditionally wrap and cover the air roots? I find them to be aesthetically pleasing to be in the air (other than the ones used for support), in a bonsai fashion.

Is it necessary to use cotton thread in order to help wick water up towards the plant and growing media (I have mine mounted on the rocks in spahgnum, with some spahgnum trailing and some added moss, which gives a nice natural look - but I couldn't quickly find good lava rock - so they may need to be remounted).

How much light should I be giving them? I have to supplement a Northwest facing window with artificial.

How much water? Generally how much fertilizer (types and when)? I am mostly watering with Orchid Champion. My understanding was that these tend to like to be wetter, but....

Now both Neos appear to be growing, particularly obvious from the air root growth, tips of which are pink or red. But one Neo's leaves are much lighter or yellower in colour in places (this one is also older with more "chicks" - I appologize for not knowing the terminology yet). Is this a concern? The younger smaller one is greener in colour.

Is there any book or online reference to rock mounted orchid culturing? Particularly for the smaller orchids?

Since repotting the Sedirea (into a sphagnum ball) its lowest leaf has begun to yellow from the crown outward and is obviously going to fall off. Should I be concerned?

I'm wondering exactly how to give these little gems the best kick start (i.e. conditions) I can without a greenhouse to get them happy and healthy. (I was thinking about putting them in a fish tank to raise the humidity / warmth...)

Many thanks for any suggestions!

(And yes, I will post pictures as soon as I can.)

Here is my first blooming Neo, bought last year in a garden store (with a dry spike) and with no form name, just N.falcata
The surprise came when the buds developed a pink spur :D and peduncle. The rest of the flower is white. (It seems to correspond to the Tougen form, according to the thread about flower colors)

The plant is growing in semi hydro since last year, and grew a lot of leaves and roots. Hopefully next blooming will be more numerous, because the smell is already so great with just 3 flowers !!!

Thanks for looking

hi all. i got two Neo. finetia 'Pine' x self seedlings in the mail today. they both came in plastic baskets, and i've read up on the traditional way to pot them (hollow centered sphag). Basically i just wanted to run these pics by everybody & tell me if things look on the up & up. i only paid for 1 Neo, but ended up with a 2nd one for free. the smaller one was added into the order. Got these from Olympic Orchids. Thanks for any advice, tips, or suggestions.

Here's both of them hanging together:
Here is the one I paid for:

And the bonus Neo:

Both of their root systems seem insanely healthy. Please feel free to be brutally honest about their condition. Thanks in advance for any help or harm. :waving

Marlene and I got a pretty good haul from OrchidFest at Parkside Orchid Nursery last Saturday.

I scored a Phrag. Jason Fischer and Phrag. 'Bullseye', a new compact Phrag. from Woodstream Orchids. Marlene picked up an Aerangis fastuosa, Angrecum didieri, and Sarcoglottis sceptrodes from Cal-Orchid.

But best of all, I managed to snap up a beautiful 4-growth Neo. 'Suikaden' at a fabulous price from Cal-Orchid as well! I was on cloud nine for the rest of the day.

3 hours of driving and 4 hours of orchiding made for a long day but it was well worth it.

Cheers.

I have officially given up on growing my Neos the traditional way - on a moss mound. This one has been growing mounted for about 2 1/2 years (this is the 3rd season of growth) and it resides in my tank where there is no rest period, where humidity stays above 90%, where there is a constant heavy breeze, where it gets misted every 4 hours and water/fertilizer daily and where it gets 1800+ foot-candles light for 12-14 hours each day.

The blossoms speak for how well this orchid likes the growing regimen. The nectaries are pink (hope that shows up) and the blossoms are nocturnally fragrant.

Since the plants Glenn sent me were in spike I was delighted to see and smell them in person. Unfortunately they only lasted 2 maybe 3 weeks. I'm not sure if that was more because of shipping stress, I might have kept them a little too dry, or are they somewhat etherial by nature?

Cheers.
I assume this is the standard cultivar of Neofinetia falcata but I´m not sure, it looks to be smaller, with thinner leaves and smaller flowers than the standard one.

Perhaps I shouldnt have divided these two....The right one has 6 spikes with around 30 flowers, the left one has 3 spikes with 16 flowers, and another spike coming it seems.

Tenkei Fukurin. Beautiful wide yellow variegation, standard Neo flowers.
Nishidemiyako. New arrival from NWO, I cant take credit for the flowers, because it already had them when I got the plant. Strong scented and very nice variegation. :)

the second one is always the Onami Seikai

supposed to be upward facing flowers, but my light source is at an angle so the flowers are funky looking. hopefully with the new HID light setup, it'll bloom next year with truely upward facing flowers :)

Then Shuntennou comes into bloom, along with Tamagawa and Ran No Hikari

and when they are just on their way out, the last batch all come into bloom

Hoshiguruma, the spurless variety

I'm fairly new to Neos and I have a Benisuzume that is about to bloom for the first time. I'm a little paranoid about the possibility of the buds blasting...It's supposed to go down to the mid 50's tomorrow night, but it was only 72 today. NWO says a ten to fifteen degree drop at night, so it should be all right-- but like I said, I'm a little paranoid...Should I bring her inside? Those temps wouldn't bother me if there were no buds...:dunno: Any opinions??

Hoshiguruma is a spurless variety with plain green leaves. Had 7 buds this year. Dropped it on the floor and broke off two.:(( There is also a tiger variegated type with spurless flowers called Kinboshi. Tsukenashi is another contorted leaf variety with the twisted axis.

Kinkounishiki has the shima (distinct bands/stripes) variegation and very thick leaves so takes bright light better than others. Tensyou has more of the cream/ light green variegation. This along with Orihime seems a bit more fragrant than others.

Fugaku is an example of the spread variegation. Akebono doesn't get many flowers per spike but innate variegation on this variety is very cool. These can be variable. Most of these have some full green leaves but if lucky, you might find one with all cream leaves and very thin green margins. Often times these ones are given a new name, Oborzuki. Akebono's roots emerge bright pinkish purple and change to green.

Kansetsu is VERY touchy about brighter light. This is one of the varieties with the true white variegation, instead of cream like some others. The white parts of the leaf are much thinner than the green part so it gets purple or burns very easily. I have to start growing this in lower light as mine is not very pretty right now. Thanks for looking.

Hi everyone,

Neo grown from seed is a lot cheaper than wild found. Anyone know what's the difference between seeded neo and wild one? I got a Hakubotan from a ebay seller, he said it's grown from seed, and the wild found should have ruby roots. So far, I can only see green roots for the whole plant. Maybe that's the difference.

I got this Neo 'shutennu' a year ago. Last october it started growing the growth you see in the picture. Then after a few weeks it suddenly stopped and didn't do anything all winter long. A few weeks ago it started growing again, but only a very very little bit. I only noticed that it grew by comparing it with a photo from October!
So is that a growth or a spike??? And why is it so slow? In the meantime it's grown plenty of new growths, that too me looked different than this. And plenty of new roots too.

This is the only neo I have - it's a standard variety so not as fancy as some of those awesome ones you guys have! Something strange is happening with some of the fans - the newest leaf has turned brown. This has happened before, and the fan eventually recovers and continues on it's way - I suspect maybe it's because I sometimes forget to water this guy for extended periods of time. I sure feel lucky it still decided to bloom for me! Smells awesome although a little over powering when up close.

Neofinetia falcata 'Nishidemiyako' is a solid base variety with marginal (fukurin) variegation. Roots are light mud brown and tsuke (leaf to stem connection) is the common crescent moon shape. Flowers are standard shaped but a bit smaller than the regular flowers.

I got this one last Spring with 2 spikes that produced normal flowers. This year it gave me 2 spikes on the main growth with normal flowers PLUS 1 more spike on a smaller fan. 2 out of the 3 buds on this spike are double spurred and double lipped. I broke one off:((. Thankfully the one bud survived me long enough to open up. This flower resembles flowers on Neo 'Soubiryu' (2 spur & 2 lip variety) but the symmetry is messed up on mine. This is all one plant.

Thanks for looking!

Well I tried to find my last post regarding one of my Neo's that is getting ready to bloom but couldn't find it. So I am posting again with a new photo of it. The two flowers are so fragile looking but are growing very fast. I am also posting a photo of the same Neo when I first saw the spikes. This is so exciting since I have never had a Neo bloom for me.
I purchased this Neo from Asiatica Nursery in Sept. of 2008 and have had it in my Orchidarium since then. I have two others that are doing well with lots of new roots and growth.
There are two photo's one in its early stages of putting out its first spike.

Thanks - Sheridan

So after looking a picture I posted here back on may 1st of my Neostylis Lou Sneary 'Bluebird' and then looking at the plant today, I'm thinking it's getting too much light now with the addition of a new T5, duel bulb fixture I put into the orchid enclosure. But then again, I don't know. The light meter reads out an average of 1200 FC at the top leaf for about 13 hours a day.

Before that the plant has some red patches, but now the top leaf and the new one forming are really red/purple. In a recent trip to a local orchid grower I saw an example of this Neo that was 10 years old and it had no red coloration on it.

10 days ago:

Today:

Now the up side is that, yes there is a new leaf forming and root growth is in full production. I counted a total of 5 new roots today.

So, should I back it out of the heavily lighted area? I can back it way down on total FC recieved. Is this a normal thing for this plant or am I smoking it?

So the last of the blooms on my Neostylis lou sneary 'Bluebird' finally came off about a week or so ago and then just last night I discovered something new. Actually two something news.

The first is a new leaf growing out the top. Yeah!! I was wondering if it was going to replace the two lowest leaves that turned yellow and fell off a while back. So that's cool, but there is also something nice and green growing at the base of the plant. It doesn't seem like a new root as it is a lot fatter and squat than the other new roots I have seen grow on this plant.

So what do you all think?

Also, should I lower this plant into bark mix some more? It seems like it has grown up and out some since repotting it a while back. Are too many roots exposed here?

Neofinetia falcata 'Orihime' (Princess of Vega) is a green stem (Ao jiku), green root (Ao ne), shima (distinct bands/ stripes) variegated variety. Junction where stem meets leaf is tsuke gata or crescent moon shaped. Roots emerge green and stay green. It is considered "woman's fuukiran" because of the elegant hime-ba leaf shape (princess leaf - slightly curved, downward arching). Flowers are standard shaped with the typical neo fragrance. This variety originated in Japan and has been around for 50 some years according to book sources.

I have a Neostylis Lou Sneary 'Bluebird' and this really cool new piece of Mopani hardwood. I was wondering if Neos can be mounted or will it dry out too quickly? I know they like their water, so I was thinking that the mount wouldn't be too far from the humidifier in my orchid enclosure so it wouldn't dry too quickly.
I think it would look really terrific on this piece of wood, but I'm not sure if the plant would take to this kind of treatment.
Any thoughts? If so, how should I go about doing it? Any different techniques I should try?

I thought I would share this item I found to make it easier to repot Neo's and provide them with great air circulation.
I first saw this at Seed Engie then on Ebay.
I purchased this on Ebay from seller "simplelife562", it is called air circulation dome for Neo's and Sedirea.
The photo's below show how easy it is to repot,I'm using my Neo rainbow (in spike) as my example.

The last picture is the finished repot placed in a new pot I found and a fancy stand.
The total time from start to finish for repotting was about 10 minutes

Tami in previous thread asked what to look for when buying Neos and someone posted a list of 5 good news every lover should have. That being said, does any OB member here sell, trade, auction or give away (not expecting this to be an option) to those of us just starting out with these beautiful orchids that want to start a collection????? I've found only two sources and had one individual offered me divisions when he repotted. I have to wait to see if that materializes. Any show I have been to (and that's not many) the vendors did not have any for sale. Any help in getting started would help. Can send me a private e-mail if one does not want to post on this thread. Domo arigato!

Neofinetia crosses seem to be very popular so I thought I would share one of mine that is making a good show. I bought it at Hauserman's three years ago and it is a vigorous grower. It has only been blooming once per year and this time it produced six spikes. Although a bit wispy, I still like it. Judges probably wouldn't. I should have removed the hanger to improve the appearance.

Hi,
I've been lurking around this forum for a while and this is my first posting. Like the rest of you, I'm a Neo Nut. I'm wondering if anyone other than me has ever looked for any sort of "guide to pronunciation" for Neos. I find them virtually impossible to figure out on my own, so, when I buy one (I get all mine from Jason At Orchids Ltd.) I make Jason say it til I can figure out a phonetic spelling to help me out when I've forgotten the next day. (I'm so old I had to take 4 years of Latin in high school so I don't find other orchids so daunting to pronounce.)
I finally got a green Neo yesterday. It was a big splurge on a division of a wild-collected 'Hisui' from the 1980's. It's dry bread for me for a while. LOL

My dad (OldGuyPops) and I scheduled a little visit to NWO last saturday (1-31-09)..... unfortuneatly I hadn't slept in nearly 24 hours so I was kinda walking around like a zombie but other than that it was awesome. Dr Glenn is amazingly knowledgeable about his plants and the history of them. Most of the plants on the first table were way out of our price range ($100's to $1000's) but were very nice to look at and drool over. The second table were the seedlings and smaller plants which I seemed to focus on but still could not afford a lot of them. I bought two Neo's and a hybrid, and my dad bought three Dendrobium moniliforme hybrids and ONLY ONE:shock: Neofinetia hybrid. Dr. Glenn also had many other strange and wonderful orchids from around the world. Anyway, here they are!

Hi to all,

Well, this species is very popular I think, and is my only vandaceous orchid furthermore my two or three phalaenopsis. The reason is because Vandas are too big for my space, and too expensive for a student! I hope in future I can try with some of them.

This one is cultivated in a wood basket as you can see, with sphagnum moss.

It's perfume....:bowing :bowing is one of the best!!

Hi all my Neo friends! I have been wondering....how dry and for how long can the neo's be during the winter months? I have one mounted with moss over the roots which dries out every other day. And at this point I mist it down again with RO water until it is moist. I also have one potted the in the traditional Japanese moss mound. If I water it well by pouring water on it and then I don't water it until it dries out, which is about 3 or 4 days, and if I only water it by misting it well until it is moist, then it dries out every other day or ever two days. So my question.....how long should it be dry for during the winter before I water it again? Should I let it be dry for a couple of days or should I just maintain what I am doing. I just don't want to rot any roots which I have done with a couple of my other neo's.

I know there was a previous thread on winter watering but I guess I just didn't get my question asked or answered or something like that...lol.

Thanks!

This is how I re-pot my orchids

Photo #1:
Supplies:Orchid (of course), Long Fiber Sphagnum, Wire (I use 1.5 mm aluminum Bonsai Wire), New Pot (or the old one), Wire Cutters, Foam Packing Peanuts(make sure they are the more spongy type and not made of cornstarch)

#2:Thread packing peanuts onto length of wire cut on an angle for sharp end. The number of peanuts depends on the length of your roots.

#3:Fold the peanuts in half into a bundle.

#4:Remove orchid from pot and discard old moss. Cut off old dead roots.

#5:Place cleaned orchid onto peanut bundle. It may be necessary to put roots between the two folded halves of the peanut bundle.

#6:Wrap bundle with moss.

#7:Continue to wrap with moss until all of the roots and peanut bundle is covered.

#8: Wrap bundle with thread or monofilament ( I have some thread that mimics sphagnum strands)

#9: Place plant into new container and replace the label.

YOUR DONE Congratulations!:goodjob

Hi all. I have a Neofinetia falcata in my terrarium, and it isn't doing very well. The problem is that the new growth starts out purple and then turns brown and dries up. Here's a pic of it.

It hasn't put out new roots in ages. Here's the conditions...
Mounted in a terrarium, near 100% humidity all the time. Day highs of 82.5, night lows of 72. Misted with RO about once a day. Fertilized rarely. Most of the roots are exposed, not wrapped in moss.
So why does the new growth start out purple?
1) humidity to high?
2) not enough fertilizer?
3) too hot?
Has anyone else had this problem?

I have a Neo Shutennou that didn't end up blooming this year, but it did make a bunch of new growths. One of the new growths has somehow come loose from the rest of the plant. I'm not sure if it somehow got bumped loose, or if this is a natural process of the plant. It's green and healthy looking and a pretty decent size. It has at least one root that I can see. I think the only thing holding it on is that its root is sort of tucked under a root from the main plant. Should I try to separate this growth from the rest of the plant and put it in a pot? Is this normal for Neos?

Oh, and I think it didn't bloom because I was letting it get too dry. I've adjusted my watering schedule and hopefully I will get blooms next year.
