Hello all,

I just received 3 Tolumbia from Hausermanns(in spike), and originally planned to mount them on cork or tree fern poles. They were shipped in clay pots and since I am pretty much a newbie with this type, I need advise.
I know I should wait til after they flower, but would like some input from someone more experienced(I have had Phals, Dends and Catts for about a year).

Hello!

I have been looking and looking for and answer to this but haven't found what I'm looking for, so I hope you can help me, and if there is a thread on this and I was blind, please forgive me for the repeat.

What I want to do is mount my phal noid to a chunk o wood that fell out of a tree onto my balcony in the summer. However, I'm not sure if it is big enough in diameter. I know I'm supposed to think about how big the plant will grow, but that's a problem, because this is my first phal and I don't know how big they can get! Is there a special formula like there is with potting, i.e. so many inches larger than the root system???

Please help! I'm on the verge of buying another phal and I think I have to get this one in order before I do. But I don't know how long I can control myself!!! :blushing:

:waving
I mounted three phals a week ago and they are going to need a feeding. How should I feed them? I'm currently experimenting with watering by spraying two of the phals once a day and one once everyother day. Could I add a low ferterlizer in the spray bottle? What would be considered a low fertilizer, 10-10-10 or something?
Help needed and appreciated!:twocents:

Hi everyone,

With lots of helpful advice from this forum, and some specific help from King-of-orchid-growing (thanks!:)) I've mounted my first orchid and thought I'd share it.

It's not in bloom, I'm afraid, but fingers crossed it'll be happy on it's new mount!

I'd welcome any advice if you think I should have done anything differently... It's a first attempt :blushing:

so this is my south facing bedroom window.
I mounted 2 one dollar phals rescued from lowes on coconut husks.
tehy had poor roots and just 2 leaves.
in teh beginning i did not water tehm enough.
I misted a lot but i think I have to dip tehm in a jar of water for a few minutes.I see new roots eyes and new leaves forming. it was like they were in a concentration camp but now it is like they are gaining weight and shape.

so the Vanda tricolor I got thru orchidboard i put it on top of a husk as well. in a different way. so i dont risk breaking the roots by clumsily opening the window.

wonder when something like this could bloom.

And a Den loddigesii keiki i received on another coconut. seems ok [added spagnum to keep it more moist till it develops roots]

put another keiki of the same plant in a small vase/ water culture seems like it is putting out roots fast.
since i had 5 keikis I will keep one in water and see.
another in SH.

Has anyone tried that stuff they sell at Lowe's and HD for foundation protection as a sub for Epi/Ecoweb? I was talking to my Dad about Epiweb mounting as a substitute for treefern and he mentioned seeing that stuff at Lowe's. He wasn't sure what it's made of but told me that the stuff he's seen is kind of a yellowish color. I'm about to head out to pick up some other stuff anyway and thought I'd check it out, but just wanted to see if anyone else has had experience with it. My biggest concern is that it's made of some kind of plastic that might leach or off-gas something harmful to plants, or that it might be treated w/ some kind of fungicide or algicide that's not good for plants.

Also, given what I've read about the low water retention of epiweb-type products, I was thinking of experimenting with 'sandwiching' the plastic web with thin slices of florist foam or something similar, then stitching it together with monofilament. I think this might produce a good inert mounting surface with a water reservoir for the plant while maintaining the high aeration benefits of plastic web products. Anyone have experience/thoughts/suggestions/critiques to share about this idea? Thanks!

I had to title this one differently since I have to keep track of 2 different projects. So here is the scoop on the 09 project. I have had to make minor moves of this piece since the summer sun kept trying to burn some leaves but I managed to keep the chids safe. I think they love me for that.

The den on the bottom left has been blooming and blooming like crazy. It was a little noid I picked up from HD a while back and just wired the whole little slat it was growing on onto the wood. Roots took off and has not stopped blooming for me 6 spikes right now. The Den Kuniko bloomed soon after it was mounted and I'll guess that I'll have to wait till next year for it to bloom again? Salaya Mini Stripe bloomed with 1 spike but someone bit off the spike and I had to put that spike in a vase...not loosing my blooms! BC Maikai has not decided what to do yet except grow more and will probably bloom as the sun comes around getting more west sunlight. The Blc Melinda Wheeler x C Aclaidiae has a sheath on it and I'm hopeful.

Anyway this piece looks so good at my front doorway. I have another area in my to be extended garden that will probably be Driftwood Project #3. Already mentioned to a friend to be on the lookout for a nice piece of big driftwood for me. I have a feeling he'll come through. Time lapse on this project was April 21 - Sept 25th.

I could not be happier :biggrin:I'm posting the first picture of what I started with and 4 months later and then 1 year later. The Lc Roseette Warland xx Choc Drop has several sheaths on it, the BC Maikai (keiki) is doing well and the Ctna Brandi Bloomed 6-09 with 3 spikes and has added another 3 spikes. Literally bloomed non stop. I have some Tillandsia that are really cool looking and the Den. Nina bloomed last year but not like what it's doing now. 5 spikes Yikes!!
I had so much fun doing this one I did another project earlier this year and will post that one next.

I had been given these two dend/phal hybrids by a friend who was moving out of state and couldn't bring them. They had been potted for three years in the same sphagnum moss, which had heavily rotted. I trimmed all the dead roots and repotted in medium bark mix.

I'd had them in the bark for about a month, when i could see through the pot that the roots were rotting even more. The plants were both putting out new growth, though, so I decided to try something more natural and mount them. I decided on coconut husks, as I thought they'd survive in my 65% humidity orchid room better on coconut husk, than on bark. I decided against using any moss when mounting them, as they didn't take well to the moss before.

I had never done any mounting before, so this work may look amateur. I am just hoping anyone with more knowledge than I could guide me. Was it appropriate to mount with no moss, since the husks are absorbent? Are they mounted in a realistic fashion? Anything I should modify?

Appreciatively,

Anthony

So,

I got in touch with someone at the Ceramic league of Miami, and well, she's making some ceramic plant tags for me. So. Here's the thing....I want her to make some largish ceramic mounts for me. However, the problem that I'm having is that I want them to look as natural as possible, and of course, attractive.

I've tried teakwood--but the pieces, although really pretty, are small, and I can see that in about 2 years I'm going to have to move some of the plants from their mounts.

I also hate vanda baskets because they rot and well, look gross, so I was thinking maybe she can design somethign akin to a vanda basket but in ceramic.

So, I guess my question is---if you were designing a ceramic mount (for larger orchids such as catts or Laelias--what would it look like? how big would you make it? I want something natural looking but pretty and, well, functional.

Also, is the idea of a ceramic vanda basket totally ridiculous?

Your comments and suggestions are welcome.

While I've got the watering of potted Phals down well, I still worry all the time about overwatering any orchid which likes to stay moist. I think I am underwatering my potted miltoiopsis NoID as a result of being scared of overwatering.

Well, I now have a mounted orchid (Miltonia spectabilis - part of the summer project) and that also needs to be kept moist from what I have read.

So my question is... "is it possible to overwater a mounted orchid?"

I have found that if I water it in the morning (dunk for a few min) the moss between the plant and the mount is still just moist when I go to bed but is very dry by the next morning.

So I thought that maybe I should water twice a day, but then I start worrying again that I may end up overwatering and causing root rot.

I'm thinking that a mounted orchid will get more air and so this is less likely to be a problem but I still worry I'm going to kill it.:hmm

:hello I have had this Den antennatum for many years and it has gotten out of hand. I cannot remove it from this basket so the old basket needs to be part of the new mount. I took a cutting off of it a couple years ago and it still only has a couple roots. (Very small delicate roots) So it definitely doesn't like change. Otherwise it is very hardy and can even handle the full sun in south Florida. Earlier this year I just turned the basket sideways and it seems happier now. The leaves were lighter, but I recently moved it out of the sun to prevent burning of the canes (I had never seen that before). It has been blooming continuously for over a year, maybe 2. I would like to groom it up a bit and eventually enter it for show. Any suggestions? ;)

Hi everyone.

Have been busy putting up mounts before Fall and winter hits.

Here they are, all mounted on Teak wood pieces purchased from RF Orchids:

~This is my Cattleya schilleriana var. sanderiana. I bought this one back in July 2008, and actually un-mounted it as I thought it would do better potted. It's not done much of anything, and I hope it likes its new home:

Cattleyas :: Cattleya schilleriana var. sanderiana #1 (2009) picture by peeweelovesbooks - Photobucket

~This is my Cattleya alcandiae var. nigrescens. I recently purchased this in July 2009, and it already put out a new growth. It's teeny tiny and I'm hoping it likes living on its Teak wood mount. I hope it gives me dark blooms:

Cattleyas :: Cattleya alcandiae var. nigrescens #1 (2009) picture by peeweelovesbooks - Photobucket

~This one is my Laelia anceps var. guerrero (Chilapensis). I just bought this one from Cal Orchids and it's smaller than I thought a Laelia anceps would be. I love the guerreros. The mount is actually quite large, something you really can't get from the pictures:

Laelias-Mexican :: Laelia anceps var. guerrero (Chilapensis) #1 (2009) picture by peeweelovesbooks - Photobucket

Laelias-Mexican :: Laelia anceps var. guerrero (Chilapensis) #2 (2009) picture by peeweelovesbooks - Photobucket

~Finally, here is my Schomburgkia albopurpurea. I bought this one from a private seller who posted a classified ad on OrchidMall. I fell in love with the white blooms, and of course, its tiny size. The pseudobulbs are very small, and twist and turn every which way, which, upon reflection, seemed perfect for mounting. The entire plant actually fits in the palm of my hand, to give you an idea of its size. Again, this is on a Teak wood piece purchased from RF Orchids:

My 3' palm tree pup is not recovering from our below average temperatures this past winter. It hasn't produced any new growth and it's remaining fronds are drying up at an alarming rate. The mother palm seems to be recovering but it's obvious that the baby isn't going to make it. The palm is located in a small pocket garden at the front of my house. This area gets east/southeast exposure and is my cherished orchid growing spot. I was mourning the loss of the little palm and concerned as to how it should be removed from the base of it's mother when it suddenly occurred to me that the palm's 3' bare stump has great potential as a future orchid mount. Now I just have to find a perfect companion. Stay tuned for part 2.

Ok, well to start out i collect alot of driftwood, and have found some pretty interesting pieces. This is actually the largest and most recent find. I am planning on letting moss cover the sphagnum moss a little, just until i get some cool orchids over the internet. It will hold mainly miniature bulbophyllums and some mini ferns and carnivorous plants.

Pics will be here shortly.

OK, here's one for you: does anyone have any tips for REMOVING orchids from their mounts? I can think of very few reasons for doing this, but once in a great while it must be done, and I'm wondering if anyone has any tricks they've used for making it a successful/ less traumatizing experience for the plant. I had a B Little Stars mounted on a big log, but the log was an inferior wood and rotted, necessitating its removal. Luckily, she had massive roots and due to the state of decay it was pretty easy to remove the orchid with minimal root damage. But I have a seedling Tolumnia which I purchased mounted on a machine-cut tiny "board", and would eventually like to put it on a more natural piece of wood. By then it will probably be pretty bonded its mount, and I worry about transferring it. Suggestions? Things that have worked in the past?

In a few days, (when I receive the cork bark I ordered) I'm going to be mounting a smallish phal. It will be my first time trying to mount, and I've been doing a lot of research. But I haven't been able to find anything about how dry I should let the mount/moss/roots get between waterings. The plant will be in an area with 50% to 60% humidity, though I plan on adding a cool mist humidifier to the area. Thanks in advance.

About two months back I took a swing at mounting one of my phals. Now I realize that the piece of driftwood I used was faaaaar too small for the size of the plant, but strangely it seems to be doing pretty well. Some root damage, but other roots are actually taking to the grain of the wood. So, the question is: What's my next step? Find a larger piece of driftwood/cork and connect it to this smaller piece? Also - I was told twine works just fine for mounting - is this so? Seems like it's holding up well so far...
So I would like to know if you have any suggestions of easy to grow cheap mounted miniatures?? (I know so hardware store sell mini-phal, could that be mounted? Is it better on a rock or on a piece of wood made for vivarium??

Oh and, if it's going to be put in an aquarium, should I put moss???? So far it would be the only orchids in the aquarium, so it could be as humid as needed I guess...

I'm not so used to plants yet, I know that everything gets bleached before it goes in my aquariums.

I have a great piece of driftwood I want to mount on (I'll be posting photos in a previous thread, but wanted a specific question here), but before I do I want to make sure its safe.

It's unknown type of wood found on the banks of the Mississippi.

Hey all,

I've been on a Teak wood mount spree ( I just think the wood looks great with the flowers/foliage). Anyway, here are some new mounts. Enjoy!

--Renanthera monachica: I bought 1, which turned into two when preparing it for mounting:

Renantheras :: Renanthera monachica A #1 (2009) picture by peeweelovesbooks - Photobucket

--My vanda denisoniana x sib: I purchased this in a 4" pot--it gave me 2 blooms the first time around. I didn't like the look in the pot. Here's a before:

Vanda Alliance :: Vanda denisoniana x sib #1 (2009) picture by peeweelovesbooks - Photobucket

And after, mounted on Teakwood:

Vanda Alliance :: Vanda denisoniana x sib #2 (2009) picture by peeweelovesbooks - Photobucket

--Here's my Neostylis Lou Sneary 'Blue Bird'. I bought this @ the Tamiami International Orchid Show this past February. I it's grown quite a bit since then:

Vanda Alliance :: Neosytlis Lou Sneary 'Blue Bird' #1 (2009) picture by peeweelovesbooks - Photobucket

Finally, my Paraphalaenopsis Kolopaking. The flowers smell like cinnamon and they are gorgeous!!

I bought this at RF orchids recently. Coincidentally, RF has a lot of new hybrids with Paraphalaenopsis...they are gorgeous.

I have another one for which I haven't found another piece of teakwood that I like. And, I just recently bought a baby serpentilingua and a serpentilingua x Neofinetia falcata. (i'm still debating whether I should mount that one?????hmmmmmm.....)

RF is the DEVIL....I'm going back next paycheck for more. :) LOLOLOLOLOL In any event, before prattling on forever, here is my Kolopaking after flowering and on a Teakwood mount:

Paraphalaenopsis :: Paraphalaenopsis Kolopaking (2009) picture by peeweelovesbooks - Photobucket

If you notice, I'm tying these with yarn, rather than with fishing wire or ties. It's a lot easier to manipulate.

I hope you enjoy the pics and your comments are always welcome.

Peace. Out. (grin)

Hey all!
I'm thinking about taking a risk and bidding on some bare-root Lepanthes (good price on Lepanthes... and I'm a sucker for Lepanthes) on eBay. It depends on what the price does tomorrow, but I'll probably end up doing it.
Anyway, if I do get these plants, I'm thinking about taking the majority of the spag moss out of the bottom of my terrarium and putting a driftwood mount in. Maybe even creating a paludarium for one or both of my killifish fry (but that's a whole other theory).

Can I use boiled/sanitized driftwood from the river (the Mississippi)? What kinds of wood are safe (I know treated wood is bad)? I can also raid my dad's woodshop or go for a hike in the local woods.

As an alternative, I saw something a while back about someone planting an orchid in a shell. I have an excellent shell collection that includes several shells with sufficient holiness that I think they would make good orchid "pots," depending on the size of the plant. Any thoughts on this technique?

I'll keep you posted on whether I buy the plants.

:waving I got these 2 little cuties at a local plant sale this past weekend. They were only $3 each. I mounted them on a treefern slab with just a tiny bit of moss for padding.

The first one is the most beautiful pink and it bloomed the day after I got it! Tillandsia 'Victoria'.

The second one is Tillandsia stricta (Brazil). I was told it would have pink flowers.

I didn't get the guy's name but he said he would be at the Redlands show next weekend. He had a lot of species broms and staghorns and a few species orchids. Some really different stuff!

So I went with my mother to the local orchid grower here in the Denver metro area, Fantasy Orchids in louisville, CO. Of course I bought her a really nice orchid for Mother's Day, Bllra. tohoma glacier.
I'm a nice son!

But she also bought for herself three other orchids. Brassavola little stars, Dendrobium aggregatum and on my advice a Phal. stuartiana. She just loved the leaves on that wee, little plant.

I had shown her my mounted Brassavola cordata and she thought it was really great. So she wanted to try it out. For years now she has had this wonderful piece of hardwood/root my late, older brother had found out in the Arizona desert. My mother was using it for a piece of wall art. It's a really nice piece. So she got the idea that mounting an orchid to it would be perfect. My artsy brother would have loved that idea. So after we got back from Fantasy, she grabbed the wood off it's nail on the wall and cleaned the dust off. I prepped her Brassavola little stars to mount. It was a perfect fit and an excelent candidate to mount. It has all sorts of new root growth on it and it seemed to form right to the wood like it was suppose to be there.

She liked that so much she then wanted me to mount her Dendro. aggregatum as well. She said she saw many examples of that same plant mounted to a back wall inside the greenhouse! She was right. I was amazed to see all sorts of Dendrobiums mounted and growing on the painted siding of an interior wall of the greenhouse. It was really cool!

So I found another piece of wood she had been saving for some reason and drilled a couple holes in it and in no time I had mounted her Dendro to it as well.

Not bad for my 2nd and 3rd attempts at mounting orchids I thought.

But what do you all think?

:hello:waving
i read you since some weeks and I really like this board, so i decided to sign up:)
I'm and orchid newbie from Italy, I apologies in advance for my poor english:bowing

A friend of mine gave me 3 Dend. Loddigesii keiki yesterday, together with a piece of sterilized cork, some sphagnum and stockings :)
This is how i've done the job

As this is the first plant i mount I'm not much sure 'bout it. Will the root cling the wood with the sphagnum between?

It took half day for the roots to get back to the silver color, is this timing correct? i can easily adjust this with sphagnum. Should i then water it daily?

The plant is small enough to fit my seedling tray: 80% RO, temps 17 to 20 celsius (63-68 fahrenheit) in this period

I never had a dendr. before so they are somewhat new to me. One keiki has got this bump

friend of mine told me it may be a flower, what is to you?

Hey All,
I am searching for new materials to mount my mini orchids with. Thought I would run a check on the members to see some of everyone's more unique mounts and the methods used to mount them. Would also be helpful to see pictures and to list the place where the materials were purchased. Personally, I have used grape wood and cork. Cork has taken over becasuse grape wood is difficult drill and is heavy. Recently I have been interested in using some type of vinyl mesh to mount my new love, bulbos. Can't wait to see what everyone is doing. Thanks for sharing.

Hi all! I read a tread a few days ago from somone (forgot the name) who said they went to Petco and bought wood for reptiles to use as a mount and how they bought it for only $9! Why cant I get any great deals like that? Anyways I went to Petco and was so happy when I found the section. I found a nice one but it was missing the tag so I had no idea what the price was, and then I found a small one for 5 bucks. I grabbed the small one and a young guy asked if i needed help so I asked him the price of the one with no tag. He had no idea so I pointed to the description on one price label that said 14" Riverwood which was $15... I was trying to keep his eyes away from the $20+ labels... after some silence he says I'll give them both to you for $12!!!!!!!!! My eyes lite up!! After that I went to Home Depot to see what orchids they have that I can mount but all I found was a Brassavola in a bag that had been there a long, long time with no water. So I'll just have to wait for the actual plant. But here's a pic of the mounts!

Well I did it. I finally decided to mount my Brassavola cordata up last night. Not sure if I did it right, but here is my attempt.

After unpotting my Brassa I found that it had several new growths of roots and maybe one new leaf bud/thingy starting. The older roots fit so nicely into the cracks and gaps in the wood that the plant litterly stood up in it's spot while I messed around with it and got it secured in place. I'm hoping it likes it's new home. The piece of wood is huge compaired to the smaller plant, but I have heard and seen examples of this orchid getting huge. So I decided to mount it on this piece of wood as I am hoping it will do well and prosper. ;)

Comments and critiques are always welcome!

So..I decided after having my front driveway and walkway and doorway brick paved to find a cool piece of driftwood to accent the doorway. Found a nice piece but at $200+ I could not justify it. I stopped by a little nursery that I had bought a couple cacti for a problem spot. Anyway I was looking around and asked if they had any driftwood. The owner said they only had one old piece. It was standing against the wall of their building trunk up and roots down. Hmmm....I wanted to see it on it's side with roots up...How much was the next question. A phone call and she said $60 but would sell it for $30. It would not fit in my outback wagon and she didn't have a saw for where I needed it cut...$10 to deliver. I bought 2 other garden plants and a friend cut one of the roots back since it was just laying across the ground. It is now the piece sticking up giving me more mounting space and the long trunk piece is added weight and mounting room too. Turns out while my friend was cutting I had a wonderful smell of cedar. What a deal!! My husband thinks we have enough! Wait till he sees this done!!

A few months ago I purchased a smbna 'Fire Fly'. At the time of purchase she was growing in and all about her 4" pot and looked as though she was begging to be transplanted to a mount. Last week I divided her and attached the divisions onto 2 different mounts. So far, so good. They both look happy on their new homes.

In addition to the Fire Fly I mounted a rather large Noid Phal. Initially I had repotted her, but the weight of her leaves caused her to topple out of her new potting media. The fall also caused her to loose her beautiful blooming spike and also broke the majority of her roots. I'm skeptical as to whether this one will survive, but only time will tell.

Last but not least, is my coconut mounted Noid Dendrobium. This poor sprawling baby suffered multiple episodes of getting crashed to the ground by sudden gusty winds. She has always seemed to want to grow sideways, so that's the way I mounted her. I'm crossing my fingers with this one. At least she won't get knocked off the shelf anymore.

Well after researching this forum for a any and all info I could gleen from what other people have writen I finally decided to try and mount 1 or 2...

Well after researching this forum for a any and all info I could gleen from what other people have writen I finally decided to try and mount 1 or 2 of my smaller orchids.

I have three plants that I'm thinking of mounting.
1) Phal. stuartiana (which is starting to open it's first blooms for me!)
2) Neostylis Lou Sneary 'Bluebird'
3) Brassavola cordata

I have seen all three of these mounted by other people here. And I have told by folks here that the Brassavola really wants to be mounted. And then there is the wonderful Phal. stuartiana. The pictures I have seen of this plant mounted really are pretty neat. Also there is my Neo. Can that one be mounted, or better yet, should it be mounted? I know where to get another small stuartiana that could use a good home. Maybe I'll do that one mounted and keep my first plant in it's pot that it seems to be happy in. Hmmmm...

So that's what I have for plants that I want to mount. They are all smaller in size and each have good root systems.

As for what I want to mount the plants onto, I have two different mediums I want to try.

First, the classic hardwood mount. I went over to Petco today and found a really nice piece of Mopani drift wood designed for use in a freshwater aquarium. It comes from Africa. It's a large piece measuring 17" long x 15" wide x 8" deep. It has lots of nooks and crannies for plants to rest in and roots to crawl all over it. I was thinking that this larger piece would be a great spot formy Phal. stuartiana as it will get fairly large some day and the flowers tend to go everywhere with that plant. Or maybe even two smaller orchids.

And then there is my own creation that I made in about 3 hours. I saw a link in another post in this forum talking about using Epiweb over a formed structure.
Epiweb
I read all the way through that site and thought it was pretty neat. Now I don't want to grown freakishly rare mosses like that guys does, I want to grow a cool mounted orchid on some and maybe some more common mosses to make the mount look cool.
I don't have the Epiweb yet, but I know some folks who sell it here (Ray) that I'm sure would help me out.

Here is the underlaying structure and internal watering system.

This is my first effort in building anything like this. My kids think I built a metal cactus or something. I see it as a sculpture that isn't done yet.
It is PVC covered metal wire that is cut and shaped to look like a tree branch. Soon it will get covered with Epiweb for the plants to mount to. The base is a piece of slate that I found in the tile department at HD. The internal watering system are bits from the drip irrigation aisle at HD as well. That will get hooked up to a small pond pump and the whole structure will sit in base of water as it's resavoir. I have not yet tested the pump and spray system yet, but if it doesn't work out I can gut that and still use the mount with a spray bottle in my orchid enclosure.

So, what'cha think? Again, I have never mounted any orchid in my life, so any advice using either system would be helpful. Thanks! :bowing

Hey Folks,
So I have 2 blank bark pieces. They are fairly small, roughly 4x6". I have 5 phal seedlings from Oak Hill Gardens. They are amboinensis, bastianii, intermedia, and 2 schillerianas. I am definitely going to mount one of the schillerianas. My question is, out of the 3 others (amboinensis, bastianii, intermedia) which should be the other one I should mount?
Thanks in advance for any input on this. I will probably mount more later but want to start with just 2.
Thanks,

I made a bad no no, I picked up a board from a pile of wood that was part of an old fence, I cut it into 12'' pcs and mounted some C. intermedia on them , three of them, when the first new roots started to touch the boards the roots tips died and the rot started up the root, I quess some one had treated the boards to prevent rot and it is not good for orchids, I have transferd the plant to tree fern slabs and all seems fine , so be careful what you use to mount with.
I was wondering how I could sterilise them before mounting my orchids onto them. I know for fish tank wood you can put it in the oven for an hour and it will sterilise it but I am not sure I can do this for cork bark, any suggestions much appreciated I dont want to find something nasty on my plants through lack of preparation. Thank you in advance

First off, thanks to the forum for identifying my P. grobyi. I decided to remount it since the old fern plaque was disintegrating and I think it needs some more space. When I remounted it I didn’t tighten the line as tight as the previous mount. I believe the plant is still secure. Will this be problem for future growth of roots. I also added a small layer of New Zealand sphagnum. The humidity in my tank is 80 plus with a small fan and I spray twice a day.

I also noticed two snails on my orchid and one on the glass. Typically, I bleach my broms but orchids seem delicate. Should I be worried? I isolated the old mount in a cup with apples and potatoes and didn’t notice any more snails after two days. Hopefully those were the only snails on my orchid because my tank was pest free.
If you have any photos of orchids growing on trees/rocks either in landscapes or in the wild, we'd love for your photos to be added to the group. The photos of orchids growing epiphytically/lithophytically in nature help to offer ideas on how orchids can be integrated into landscapes.

The question is: Is it true that angraecoids (Aerangis, Angraecum, etc.) should not be mounted on tree fern plaques? (Please--no lectures about sustainablity--I know and I agree...) In other words, does tree fern harm angraecoids? If so, does anyone know why (i.e., the actual reason)? I have heard both sides from some serious growers. Does anyone know for sure?!?

C'mon guys--little help! (Um, pretty *%^#$ please?)

As we know we use coconut husks as a media to grow orchids I would like to give some example of them.
Normally we live in hot climate area and weather is extremely hot at midday . Coconut husks can reduce that heat. Bec every one who mount them on tree trunks cover them with husks .With not only one but with four to five husks . Vandas. dens and oncidiums and pigeon orchids grow crazily over there and can produce many spikes, bushes of blooms.
Not only that you check the route system of the bushes .My God they develop as big as snakes. Because of the moist retain in between the husks .
That is the nature who provide this magic. Dendrobium cruminatums are the people who get this advantage mostly.
Bye Wish you my dear friends A Happy New Year too.

I only have a very few orchids. My 4th and latest one is a sweet little lepanthes telipogoniflora. I am considering maybe getting a few more lepanthes later. THe plant came to me potted in a small 2 inch pot in long fiber sphagnum. Now..I like orchids to grow them on mounts. I have seen epiweb and it looks very good. But my concern is:

WIll the epiweb slab u use ...especially for miniatures like lepanthes need to be big? Reason: you don't want the plant to overgrow a 4 inch square of epiweb and realise that you can't untangle and remove the roots from the epiweb. It seems like a permanent mount.

What do u guys recommend for mounting miniature orchids? Are u guys who use epiweb concerned about the inability to remove the plant from the mount? I feel cork bark might be a better choice. A wad of live sphagnum for the platn to dig into...mounted on a piece of bark should be also easy to remove later on if needed.

thanks,

Hi there everyone. I received 2 swamspticks from growinhydro.com and finally got around to mounting these phals. One is a Mini Mark Holm and the other two are 2 keikis of Carmela's Pixie 'Big Boy' x Sib.

I thought the sticks were going to be bigger, but they definitely won't hold a larger phal. I will keep everyone updated as to their progress.
Here are the pics:
I was a bit worried in the beginning, but my Lepanthes thrives.
Essential is to put the orchid you want on the right height.
It is different humidity on different hights on a nanoviv.
2" is very different for your little darlings dependig on what they need.
I did start the culture for 1 1/2 year ago.
Most of the orchids love it so I have three nanovivs and plans for some more...
