I've seen the orchid projects unfold here on OB - and am a little confused by it - but I want to eventually participate - maybe next time there's a project. . .so could you help clarify some things?

Are there rules established with each project from the beginning. . . or is each project molded by what people want to do (voting? Is that what I'm seeing here?) after everyone is signed up? Is there a specific focus or goal in mind for each project?

How long does the average project give for sign up?

Is it always growing a particular orchid? Is one specific type chosen and compared? Or are there several types chosen?

Is this a contest of sorts?

I did a search on projects, and I didn't really understand the breadth and depth of it. . .so if you could help clear it up, I'd appreciate it - I'd like to participate at some point.

HERE WE GO! We will be choosing Species plants that are compact in size with a max of 15 inch with spike. Blooming size, flowering time can vary. There will be a $25.00 cap on the price, have no idea what that converts to in Canada and Europe. The difference in this project is that you Should choose plants that are known to be available in all area's. This means picking plants from known vendors list. By doing this it ensures availability and quality of plants.

When you suggest your plant, please include where they are available and what group they belong in.
Please suggest plants in your group only.

Here's a list of well known and respected vendors
USA
http://www.orchidsinourtropics.com/ = TO
I'm sure there are many other vendors and it's OK to use them, Just be sure they sell quality plants. AND let me know and I'll add them to the list.

Now that we have a few participants. I've got some questions about the plants that we are going to choose for each Temp. range before I post a thread for plant suggestions.

1 If no one in Canada wants to get a warm grower, should we not worried about them being available there?

2. What size plants can we suggest? I know that we have always chose compact in the past. Is there anyone in each of the groups not OK with getting a larger plant?
If so let us know and we will keep it small

Let me know what you all want to do. And once we have all the guidelines in place we can start working on plant selections.

Hi all just got my computer back up and very pleased with the new project plant selection.
To make things a little more interesting I will be offering a prize for the first 2 people to get there's to bloom. (U.S residents only sorry)
You need to take a picture of the project plant when you first get it and post a picture here. Then again once it blooms. Thats all.
The prize will be 2 seedling Cattleya's
The first person will pick 2 of the 4 available the second person will get the remaining 2. Sound fair?
Good Luck!!
Here's the choices
Lc. Tristar Bouquet 'Hawaii'
There is a large section of information in Orchidwiz regarding this plant. It seems there is a bit of confusion between it and 2 others (Den formosum var giganteum and Den infundibulum). If you happen to get one of the others (through mislabeling or wrong info), then the conditions would be different and could die within 2-3 years due to stress.

I don't think one as risky as this should be used as a project plant :nono:

We had a large crowd in the chat room last night! The total count was a 24 at one point! :faint:

So far, we've decided we would like the following chids to be in the running:

Comparettia falcata
Den tetragonum
Bulb dearei
Tblm kotoense
Haraella odorata
L bradei
Masd infracta
Aer citrata

We have lots more to go over on the existing list...BUT...we really want some additional plants to be suggested. Take a little time to search for interesting chids that fit our criteria for size, availability, price and availability, then look it up at Internet Orchid Species Photo Encyclopedia and save the link so you can show us what you'd like to suggest, either in the chat room or in this thread.

Once we have some more approved plants, I'll start a separate closed thread to start tracking the plant, it's growing and availability info and  votes for each one.

Once we've exhausted ourselves and agree that there are no more suggestions coming...we'll tally up the ten chids with the most  votes and those plants will go to our final poll. From there, we will each get one vote and the plant with the most votes at the end of the poll will be the plant we all purchase.

This project is our largest yet! We have an amazing 68 people involved...54 in the U.S., 7 in Europe, 6 in Canada and 1 in Australia! In the past, we've always ordered the plants from one vendor and I was able to get a discount applied to the project plant. With so many people here in the U.S. playing along this time, that is going to be nearly impossible to accomplish so...
we may have to make a change in the way things are done. It is quite possible that we will each order from any vendor of our choosing, as long as it's a plant in the same stage of growth (NEAR Blooming Size).

It is going to be of the utmost importance that when the poll is posted, we have a CONFIRMED amount of people who will be ordering. Many people who are now listed may drop out along the way which is something I hope doesn't happen but in today's world, we need to be realistic. Depending on how many confirm, there is still a chance of getting the plant from one vendor...we'll have to play it by ear this time ;)

To make things a little easier for folks who were chatting in the middle of the night for our first chat, I'm going to schedule the next chat for this coming

Thurs March 19 at 7:00pm EST, rather than 8:00pm.

Hello all...I have been following the Nano-viv discussion for a while and was wondering if there would be any interest in doing something along the lines of setting up a terrarium with plants grown on terracotta in an enclosed space...
I was thinking we could set some parameters, perhaps ask Jesse if he would be willing to design some terracotta tubes for us, look at various pleurothallids for candidates (I am thinking perhaps we should say 3 plants that we all get (though in the interest of everyone participating, perhaps we could just agree to "agree" on three genus within the pleurothallis alliance, and leave the species within each to the decision of each individual participating...ie if we decide that we will be using Pleurothallis, Zootriphion and Stelis, each participant can decide on their own which species of each they will be using, so long as they stick to the genus' we decide upon...), and leave the rest to each person's judgement) and go from there.

Just seeing if there is any interest at this point, but I am thinking that we should shoot for using a 10 gallon aquarium for our "case" as these are readliy available most everywhere (in the US--though I remember this being a common size when I lived in Japan as well, so I'd guess there might be follow-through elsewhere in the world); and then decide whether we want to do a "tower" of plants or a "log" of plants...

Anyways, as I said, I am just in brainstorm mode at this time...

Thoughts? Ideas?
