For what kind of orchids, is it recommended? I've read there are some members that use this with nothing else. What are it's advantages, disadvantages?

I have had my run ins with snails, slugs, mealy bugs and spider mites. Nothing compares to deer though, when they will eat an entire season's growth and then some, in one evening. They seem to be particularly fond of my Dendrobium kingianum and the miniature Cymbidiums. Does anyone else have to deal with deer eating their outdoor orchids? Is there any way to deter them, or will I just have to plan accordingly and mount the orchids higher in trees?

I was wondering if this light was be ok for my orchids.
I have catts.. onc.& a den...
250 watt metal halide 4,000k bulb . Both are standard bulbs and have the same specs and color. The ballast is incapulated in a rubber cement which keeps it extremely quiet and cool.
How far away should I keep the light from my first row. There are 3 shelfs.:blushing:
Thanks you

hi, this is my first thread, im from spain so im sorry about the language if it is not really good :(

well, here´s my question, i´d like to know if anyone grows orchids outdoors in places where it freezes but also where the frost or very low temps hold for a long time.

i´ll tell you my situation, here where i live it´s pretty cold in winter. we usually get frost (from october to april-may) but the prpblem is not frost, but the low temps that stay during the whole day.
example: at night -5ºcelsius (like 25 farenheit) and during the day 2 or 3 º celsius (like 36 farenheit)

do you grow any orchid in that conditions?

i grow a cambria since last year in the balcony which has flowered this year, and i suppose cymbidiums also do well with that temps.
this year im going to try with oncidium, cattleyas, potinara, brassia, and epidendrum. i think they stand low temps because they are hybrids.

do you know of any others? and not just hybrids, but species? maybe coelogyne cristata and dendrobiumm nobile?? some more please

thanks

Then, the last two pictures, an interesting South African plant with small bulbs (not really a succulent). It is totally dormant 9-10 months of the year, leaves gone, just bare gravel showing in the pot. I keep mine in its pot, beside the house in the hot sun, with NO water all summer (it gets some rain, “whenever”). It likes summer “baking”. In early February, green shoots start to show, and then it gets water while it is growing and blooming.

In the process of encouraging the AOS to place a higher priority digitizing some of their excellent out-of-print articles, I ended up digitizing one of my favorite articles of theirs. The AOS was kind enough to post the digitized article on their website...

Growing Orchids Outdoors in Southern California by Susan M. Stephenson

Digitizing the article was super easy. I just typed the article while reading it again! Those of you reasonably proficient at typing should be able to type up an article in only a little less time then it takes you to read an article out loud. Then I took photos of the pictures in the article and added them to the digitized article.

Which orchids can I grow outside year-round in Tampa, FL?

So I just found out I'll be moving to Tampa, Florida, in June, and I'm curious as to what orchids I can choose from to grow outside. I don't know what amount of light I'll be able to give, so I'm looking at all types.

What do you Florida orchid growers grow outside year-round? SBOE (Santa Barbara Orchid Estate) has a list of temperature tolerant orchids, and they've got a nice selection, but I'm wondering what else is out there, especially looking for input from people in or near Tampa, since you all are the ones with the experience.

I won't have a greenhouse, and I'll be growing on our lanai (if I spelled that right), which is huge, so size isn't of a concern.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

Let me begin by stating that my makeshift greenhouse was designed for propogating pitcher plants, but I don't see why it wouldn't work for orchids as well. Feel free to move this to another forum if needed.

Today I decided to give my sprawling pitcher plant a haircut. I've gotten so many positive comments about this plant that I decided to try and start some cuttings to give as gifts. Once the 8 cuttings were prepped and potted they needed a terrariam or plastic enclosure to house them in for next few weeks.

Gallon sized ziploc bags didn't seem to be the logical answer so that got me to thinking. I remembered that I had saved a zippered plastic comforter bag. I found the zippered bag and was pleased to discover that it had the perfect dimensions for this application. My next hurdle was figuring out how to support the bag so it wouldn't collapse on the cuttings. In my garage I discovered a rigid plastic crate and was thrilled to find it was a perfect fit for the zippered bag. The bottom of the crate had rather large openings so I cut some cardboard to fit and placed it in the base of the crate. The plants were placed in next and the crate was then carefully slid into the bag and zipped shut. I elevated the whole contraption on a short plant stand in a location that receives a few hours of dappled sunlight each day. My project actually turned out much better than I expected it would. Now if the cuttings take I'll be good to go.

I move my orchids outdoors for the summer. Last year I used the front stoop (which is shaded) but my collection has grown to the point where the stoop will not serve. So, I was planning to buy a shade house, like this one (I am not at all handy)

10' x 10' 50% Shade House: Portable Canopies and Shelters from Shelterworld

However, I think 10 X 10 might be a little big for my needs, so while looking at alternatives, I came upon this:

Amazon.com: OrchidHouse Greenhouse: Patio, Lawn & Garden

Does anyone have any experience with this thing? Worth buying? Junk? Better/Worse than a frame with shade cloth (in winter the orchids will come back inside).

Also, what percentage shade cloth should I get . . . I have everything from Brassovolas to Paphs . . there's some natural shade, and of course I'll use the bigger brighter light plants to shade the others . . . and possibly leave a side open for the bright light lovers . . . but what should be my default?

Thanks!

I'm thinking of installing a small shelving area to give my Catts summers outside. The only area I have available is a 5' long strip of fence that gets 2-3 hours of direct sun from 11am on, and very filtered sun afterwards. By very filtered, I mean that the sun is coming through two rows of trees before it hits my back yard. The filtered sun should be enough to grow Phals, but I don't know if the whole shebang is enough for Catts.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

It's going to go down to the 40's this week here in Miami, and I finally broke down and dragged my huge vanda and all of my other orchids inside the house. The vanda lost a couple of leaves during our last cold front, so I felt compelled to bring everything inside. It's now laying flat on my dining room table (and the roots take up most of it). Sigh.

Anyone else experiencing a cold front?

I need to move so I can build a greenhouse. :)

Ok.

My front porch has been taken over by Catts. I've been thinking of buying some adjustable wood shelves from Williams-Sonoma (they can be sealed).

I like them because you can adjust the height of the units, and they are reinforced with metal on the inside.

Has anyone purchased these? If so, would you recommend?

Do you think the plants will get enough light if I put them on the shelves?

Thanks.

:help Hi everyone! I need your advise and orchid wisdom.:help

I've been wanting to try growing the Gongora's and Stanhopea's. Florida....on a patio.....90F plus in summer with 90 plus humidity. I think the Gongora is a safer bet, right?

Can you tell me what conditions you're growing in and how you're caring for these, what to do?, what not to do? Any particular ones I should get or stay away from?

Gratefully, as always....:bowing

I know California has received much rainfall the past few weeks as well as, and I know I will get flack from those in areas with actual seasons, blistering cold. I wanted to know how everyone's fairing this winter!

Most of mine are not protected with a roof, and get their pots flushed from rain, being in California this rain is usually cold. No rot issues, just damage from the winds blowing over pots or blowing baskets into everything in range.

My most tender outdoor orchids, or ones I fear are most sensitive, have been unaffected by temps down to 31 so far with no protection. Those being Vanda coerulea, Laelia purpurata, Holcoglossum amesianum and Laelia lobata.

I'm interested to hear about others cold season status!

I know that these orchids are not the mainstreem cultivars but I think that these might be easier and more space efficient to grow.

Greetings -
I got a heater unit that screws onto the top of a propane tank (like a barbeque grill uses); even on 'low' it puts out an impressive amount of heat.
So, I know that people who use natural gas or oil-fueled heaters have to be very cautious in using these around orchids, because even a slight gas leak will cause bud drop in orchids.
Does anybody know if propane would have the same effect? I've been using a little electric box heater when the nights are too cold (and winter has come astoundingly early to balmy south Louisiana). I'd sure like to use this propane heater, but not at the cost of my buds!
Thanks - Nancy
