As mentioned in the title, it was a Japanese culture festival, which displayed many examples of Japanese crafts and performances. the fact that we had a pretty cool summer was a nice factor.

I'm old school from film developing days and I'm just learning digital.
This sunrise shot was captured near the Orchid Country Club - still has the word orchid he he! The foreground water is a reservoir and I included some tree branches to create a frame for the photograph to add some interest. Being early in the morning, there's no ripples of water whatsoever at the reservoir.
Any input is most welcome. ]]>

My Sony point shot camera has died,now I have to use Nikon F-100 SLR camera, which is six year old and have 1.2 and Nikon 60 mm macro lenses.
Now I have to go through of processing,scan and post the
images.

This first one -- the flash went off. Apparently the camera thought it was dark enough to need one. Needless to say the flash was ineffective in lighting up the clouds. :D The result was a dark, somewhat ominous sky. I rather liked the effect.
Here's the next shot with no flash. But it came out a bit lighter than 'reality'.
With just a tiny bit of 'tweaking' -- this is closer to how the sky actually appeared.

OK, so I don't own a Macro lense. And these pictures are not simply 100% crops. I was cruzin' around on YouTube and stumbled onto an interesting video.

I used my new Canon 40D and a 1.8 50mm lense. It has the required 52mm filter mount to do this. I was totally shocked to see this work out so well. And with a little more practise I think this could really be fun!
I set the lense to it's greatest DoF, f22 and used the on camera flash to make exposure. I think shutter speed was 1/60th.
Here's a quick shot I took with the 50mm lense mounted normally and as you can see, the effect is dramatic.
I was only a few inches away from the flowers. I had to be careful not to breath too hard as I could make the flowers move around. And ofcourse being that close means lighting can be an issue. You also need some other source of light falling on the subject so you can focus. Oh, that's done by moving the camera and lense in and out untill it looks right. It's a touchy thing, small movements make a huge difference. I think I took 33 pictures to get a couple nice ones.
Here's a funny one I tried with another orchid. With my naked eye I didn't see the ultra fine spider webs on the lip of my Blc. 'Rustic Spots'. but in this image the show up! I'm hoping on this site you can see them too. I was using my very nice comp. monitor and PhotoShop to see them.
Here's a picture from the other day using a 70-200 f4 L lense. At around 180mm I could get the whole flower. And I had to stand back at least 1.2 meters to get focus.
If you have a camera with a DoF button and a lense with a 52mm filter thread-in front, you too can do this! ]]>
I did however walk out into the perennial section and bought about $50 in other kinds of plant! Doh!
But I also brought along my camera with my new 70-200 f4 L lense. Garden centers are always a great place to shoot, if the owners don't mind.
Here's a couple of my more favorite shots today. I messed with them a bit. The angle was one not usually seen.
I have this plant growing in my backyard, some sort of perennial daisy.

The plants I bought are pretty cool, but not yet fully in bloom. Maybe a month or so. I think that's why I like to garden, so I can have all the plants near by to shoot. :) ]]>

]]>The problem I was having with this particular plant was that the color of the flowers is so deep, dark reddish purple that the camera's meter was totally getting confused. In way too many cases the meter told the flash to really dump it out. The result was way too many over exposed flowers.
But every once in a while the flash had to recharge from it's heavy handed assult on this plant and I ended up with no flash sync and therefore no flash. Some of the results are kind of cool I think.
I guess I like all the soft colors and the motion blurs.
I'm easily amussed I guess.

which puts me at 27ish...
one vendor told me that the first photo was a "miltoniopsis which is a miltonia mixed with a phalaenopsis and they're very easy to grow." i didn't think this sounded right? but the flower was so pretty and it's worth a shot right? i'm thinking she was wrong and that this is actually a cooler growing plant.
if anyone can confirm that this is (or is not) a cooler growing miltoniopsis i'd be very grateful.
other than that, i got a tolumnia, a BEAUTIFUL paph lowii, burrageara, and the miltonia(opsis?)

I am new here but not new to orchid growing. Ok, I am starting a new orchidarium for miniatures and with that I want to get a new digital camera to document setting up and record growth and blooms as I go.
Anyway, I would like suggestions for a cheaper digital camera that takes good regular and macro pics. I have to borrow a camera right now because my last digital camera is so old my Blackberry camera phone has more pixels. lol
So lets hear your suggestions and links to photo examples (especially of orchids) would be great.

Last year I started learning to use my grandpa's old Nikkormat. It's 100% manual function - I have a flash for it but no bulb, and it has a light meter but no battery. So a lot of photos don't turn out, and those that do, well, they aren't as great as they could be.
Anyway, I haven't taken out that camera much since December, and so I have a few accessories that got their first real work today: My parents gave me a camera bag and a monopod (I think I like my tripod better, but they both have advantages and disadvantages), and I bought a 200mm lens and a set of macro extender tubes.
So here's some of the better end of today's photos:

Needless to say we were all quite pleased with the show, as well as the vendors were, and 3 came close to selling out completely. One of the vendors also mentioned that he had the best one day sales ever at an orchid show. So hopefully we can do just as well or better next year. Enjoy the pictures!
