Originally there were 2 buds, but one blasted last week. A second growth is nearly mature, and if it does like the first growth, it will spike within a few weeks of completing its growth.
I love the color, it's so bright! In reality the red is not so pure, there a slight orange tinge to it.

The plant is hanging upside down on a piece of driftwood, the base of the plant is covered in live sphagnum moss that is watered daily.
Each flower is approx. 1-2mm.

I grow them in bark, in sphagnum, I think I could grow them on the carpet :lol:. They just love me, this individual plant if you can call it a plant was a 2 leaf division scrap piece I figured would die. But instead it sent up 3 yes 3 stalks :rofl:.
Thanks to the wonder that is clear pots I can see a few new growths coming and all is well in the world of sigmoidea.

This one is a truly tiny plant; the stick on which it is mounted is barely 1" x 3". Flowers are minute but pretty. I'm growing this one with the Oncidiums; it likes a bit less light, and a bit more water.

Not as impressive as a long foxtail of flowers, but it does bloom off and on for awhile.
I'll try to get a photo of some 'fresher' flowers; I believe each only lasts one day, but appear for several months.

Finally bloomed after several months with a spike that did not grow more than 2 millimeters (and died eventually), it decided to grow 2 new spikes properly this time, since I put it in a mini-terrarium (suspended in a glass vase with live sphagnum at the bottom), it loves the increased humidity! :biggrin: (as well as my Chiloschista and Schoenorchis in the same vase)

I want an orchid for INSIDE my house to sit on a north-facing yet still-sunny kitchen windowsill. I currently have a baby fig tree and philodendron doing very well there. It will have to be very small, as the ledge is maybe 4" wide. I am comissioning my very talented sister, who is a clay artisan, to make me a tiny 2-2 1/2" pot. (can go a little larger if needed.) I am more concerned about the plant fitting the pot and living on the sill than adjusting the environment/ potting style to suit the plant.
Any suggestions for species? No hybrids, please. I was thinking Schoenorchis fragrans, but know almost nothing about its needs. Also, most of the ones I've seen are mounted, not potted. Thanks in advance for your help!

This is my Phal equestris 'Three Times A Lady x Blue Too' which was a gift from Gin a few years ago and is almost never out of bloom. The last cycle gave me two spikes and each one had three branches grow off it. Now, five of those six have keikis growing and there are two new spikes full of buds getting ready to start the show again.
While watering today, I notice "something" behind the leaf on one of the keikis...lo and behold...a bud! :shock:
The pictures show (in order) the whole plant, then one side, then the other side and the last photo is of the keiki growing a bud. The largest root is about 1/4" long and the only other root is less than half that! The only thing showing is the green tip! :faint:
If I had to leave my house and could only take one chid, this is the one :nod:
I'd hate to leave any of the Chocolate Drops but this baby must endure!

I got this from Andy's 5 weeks ago to replace a plant I lost 2 years ago and the flower spikes are a surprise.
Plant is 3.5 inches tall and the flowers a little over a quarter of an inch.
The fragrance is strong and complex. In the morning it reminds me most of Lily-of-the-Valley and spice, and Linden flowers in the afternoon.
It is interesting that Susiep also got hers from Andy's and her flowers as well as Susanne's show more of a pink tinge. I suspect you get more color with more light.
About the name dilemma. According to Susanne the correct name is Capanemia superflua which is what Bechtel called it in the "Manual of Cultivated Orchids". However, I get most useful cultural information in English if I google Capanemia uliginosa and this is how Andy is selling it. Capanemia superflua seems much better for Spanish.

Fri, 24 Apr 2009 03:00:35 GMTThis one opened up a few days ago, I have 2 of these one growing 12 or so inches from 2 T5HO lights and another about 6-8" from 2 13W compact flourscents. Pretty big difference in light levels, but both plants/flowers look the same so I'm guessing everything is good. Humidity for both is usually 85-99% with temps of 65-80. Both are flowering and actively growing. The flowers are about 1/4" in size.
Leptotes pohlitinocoi is the first photo. I got this plant from Andys almost 2 months ago because my Leptotes bicolor is doing so well in water culture. The bicolor has been flowering for 6 weeks and is fragrant late night and very early in the morning.
For size comparison, petals of pohlitinocoi are less than 1 inch and bicolor almost 2 inches. Plant height of pohlitinocoi 4.5 in and bicolor 6.5 inches.

I got this from Andy's in bud 2 weeks ago. This was not on my wish list but Andy recommended it as a warm grower. Looks like a Pleuro. but it is related to cattleya and can interbreed within that alliance.
This is definitely an orchid I can only appreciate after close-up photography. The petals are only 1/2 inch and you need a magnifier to see the stylish little hood over the pollinia.
Tip: Do not cut flower spike, may rebloom for years from the same spike.

I did not buy any orchids for nearly a year because of space limitations. Instead I kept looking at the gorgeous minis posted on these forums, asked questions and assembled a "realistic " Wish List. Seemed like, a harmless learning experience at the time. I was stunned to find all of them, and more, at the Longwood Gardens Orchid Show.
As soon as I arrived I landed in the tent of Andy Phillips, who I had never met before, when he and his assitsants had no other customers and were just waiting. :evil: I was naive. I don't think I have to say any more.

1. to attend the workshop about re-potting, so that when I need to repot, I know how
2. to try out my 200 mm lens and my macro extender tubes on my grandpa's camera
3. to get the species on the other orchid I saw yesterday that I wanted so bad.
So I took some photos and attended the workshop, and stopped by the table to write down the species of the one I wanted. Gastrochilus fuscopunctatus. I went to write it down and the man selling it (Don White) said that he didn't know if I would be able to find it again, but he didn't want to take it home so he would take a couple more dollars off the price for me if I wanted it.
Well... I really shouldn't have. But I did. I mean, it was so cute!
Supposed to be "room temperature" tolerant, partial shade, and can be grown either in a terrarium or out of it depending on how fast water evaporates, so he suggested I try without first, which is what I'm doing.
I'm also including a couple of photos of my Tolumnia just because I know you all want to see it!

It is mounted on cork and currently has about 6 spikes (it appears to be sequential flowering) still with buds!
The second is a plant that I have wanted for quite a long time!! I saw a photo of it in a journal some time ago, and loved its quirky look! It seems it goes by various names, I knew it as Pleurothallis ornata, but this plant is labelled Pl. schiedei. It has been called Stelis ornata and various other things like Effusiella. Whatever you call it, I call it beautiful!
The little white fringe-y things sway in the slightest breeze!

I live about 3 hours from there, and decided...I purchased these two beauties yesterday from Al’s Orchid Greenhouse. I live about 3 hours from there, and decided to make a day trip of it.
The first two pics are Phal. (honghenensis "Mr. Biggles" X hainanensis "Flower Power"). It's mounted on a piece of cork, covered in roots, leaves only about two inches long. Semi-deciduous, so it only has one leaf right now, but has two spikes. Fragrant of sugary sweet grapes.
The last two pictures are Phal. (Musick Sweetheart X equestris "B#100"). It was "not for sale," but Al was generous enough to let me buy it, as he had two of them. It has two spikes, one of which is working on several branches. Total of 24 flowers and buds. Main plant and two basal offshoots. It's also fragrant, smells like grape kool-aid. It's growing in Hydroton pellets, soon to be mounted to a piece of cork. Leaves are about three inches long.

Had a great time at the Atlanta show this year. Got to spend some time with my mom and she was kind enough to fund our trip with some belated birthday money. I picked up a Den. abberans, Den. oligophyllum, Onc. croesus, Max. variables (yellow), Den. 'Pixie Charm', Phal. lobbii,and Epi. propax. I passed on a beautiful Phal. lindenii because of the cool growing conditoins it requires. Would hate to kill a pretty little plant like that. The Pixie Charm is a Den. unicum hybrid that doesn't require the winter resting period. This one was the only one Marble Ranch orchids had that was more orange than yellow. I actually got two of the abberans because the price was right.

I bought it last year in April when it was in bloom and it is pretty close to being on schedule this year. It is growing in a plastic pot of mini bark and perlite and mulched with sphagnum. I water it once per week with rainwater and mist the sphagnum with rainwater when it dries, (two or three times per week).

So during the trip, i decided to look for cool pots, and found one i knew i absolutely had to have. I've given up saying no, and now if i want something that i KNOW i want, (NEED!) then i buy it.. So i want this to mount on the wall someday, but thought i'd get it growing, to get the moss coverage to start up before i even plan on mounting it.... I have a Bulbophyllum frostii, Bulb. moniliforme, and a Bulb. (Cirr.) thaiorum. Thats it for orchids, but theres also a small unknown fern, as well as a Cephalotus follicularis, Ficus pumilo, and 2 sundews or butterworts, I dont know my CP's (Carnivorous plants)yet.. Anyways heres a few shot of it, and i hope the Bulb. frostii will eventually let the leaves grow perpendicular to the pot. I will house it in its own terrarium by itself under some grow lights to keep gnats from getting to it, which is one of the reasons i potted it up today...
Sorry, but I had to tell my story before you get to see it...
From what will be the 'top view' eventually...
I also havn't added any moss to it, because i will put that stuff through quarintine.

• Dendrochilum wenzelii, the plant, then a bloom close-up – A first bloom – in 1 ½ inch pot

The flowers appeared out of nowhere, last weeks watering there was no sign of a spike and this weeks I had nice fat buds, so maybe 10 days from nothing to open. Or I just missed them in the mess :rofl:.
They are both about 8-9" from 2 T5HO bulbs in 65-80 temps. Misted daily by a mistking for about 15 seconds, computer fan in the back for airflow. There do tend to ramble around, but that just makes cutting for trades :biggrin:.

and Pleurothallis stricta, with something. I've never had it do this before..is it a seed pod forming? Also, sorry the picture is from the back of the blooms...I didn't want to actually go through the trouble of opening up the tank to turn the plant around lol.

Mon, 05 Jan 2009 19:44:33 GMTHere's one of my favorite miniatures (and favorite Dendrobiums). It is shown here in a pot that is just over an inch in diameter. It hails from New Guinea and is cool to intermediate growing, though it seems to grow very easily for me. This particular plant was awarded a Certificate of Horticultural Merit by the AOS. The color in the closeup is more accurate than the full plant photo - it is a pale green color with an orange tip to the lip.

If you look closely you can see the nectar in the flower spurs, though it doesn't take a moth with a twelve inch tongue to reach the nectar - perhaps some micro-miniature moth with a half-inch tongue.

I did get the pleasure of waiting about 3 months for the spikes to form, wow so slow. Although I have another mini working on its 4th month and no buds let......its growing but wow.

Everything I could find on it implied that it was...This is a plant that my pal (with a fistful of my money) got for me at the WOC last January. Everything I could find on it implied that it was cool-growing (I am in south Louisiana). It definitely waxed and waned with the temps this past summer, putting on a growth spurt during cooler, wetter spells, and losing a lot of foliage during the hot and hotter ones.
Still, two inflorescences, one bud opened to show a flower nearly black. IOSPE says "inflorescence arising from the apex of the ramicaul through a spathe and carrying oblique, acute, conduplicate floral bracts" - clueless what that means, but the flower is held right against the stem of the inflo, pointing downward sharply.
If I can keep it growing/alive/blooming for a couple more years, I'll consider it a success.

This one is planted in a 2" net pot with only 2 2" growths. Its really amazing how small some blooming size plants can be.
