There is a small greenhouse, Littlefrog, just off the x-way in Stockbridge, MI on my way to pick up my daughter at Michigan State U. The owner, Rob, has spoken at our local orchid society. I've always wanted to stop and visit with him and today was the day. He wanted to get rid of his Bulbophyllum and unfortunately I was hungry! Normally I wouldn't list plants I've purchased but I'm getting very "into" Bulbos. I picked up Cirr. dentiferum, B. factum, B. echinolabium, B. orthoglossum, B. lasiochilum, B. Frank Smith (lobbii x carunculatum) and B. Jersey (lobbii 'Kathy's Gold' x echinolabium 'Big Red'). Boy Oh Boy is my greenhouse going to smell WONDERFUL!

I received this bulbophyllum back in August bare root with two spikes. Things "seemed" to be going well and over the past 10 days one of the spikes turned brown so I removed it. I just thought it blasted or the trauma of repotting caused its demise.... not happy about it but it is what it is. The other spike seems to be OK but will it ever open revealing a beautiful flower????? And is this (2nd picture) a new PB or another flower spike.....

Are all B. Medusae plants ugly? Look like they are on their last legs? The reason I ask is that I paid $25 for one plant from a reputable grower....

Are all B. Medusae plants ugly? Look like they are on their last legs? The reason I ask is that I paid $25 for one plant from a reputable grower. The other plants I received from him were gorgeous. One has 5 or 6 spikes and the other is outstanding in appearance. But the Bulbo.-One piece was detached, one lead was rather crumpled up in the mesh basket. It looks like it is trying to put out another lead, but I am a bit apprehensive about that plant. Emailed the grower who was going to send me a replacement but found he was out of stock and will refund.
Ordered another plant from another reputable dealer. This one is also ugly. It has two spikes and "may" bloom but again I am appalled at its appearance.
Can someone reassure me that the appearance is not as important as I think it is? Or is it? :help
Thanks

Hi all I just got my first Bulbo. It is a large Echinolabium with about 20 or so pseudobulbs. I did a search and found a little info but was wondering how everyone here cares for them. Light levels, temps, potting media etc. I was warned that the blooms have a "dog poo" type odor. The plant is spiking now so I hope to find out how bad it is soon.

This is a division of the original plant that was awarded the FCC. It was acquired by Walter Off (Waldor Orchids) from Joe Volpe way back when. I got a piece of it from Walter and have been growing it on for many years. It's just beginning to open its flowers this season, I see 13 spikes so far.

I think my Cirr dentiferum is working on a spike but I'm not sure.

I will post a picture tonight.

My question is this: Is it better to mount this species so the growth and spikes can move downward OR does it really matter?

I was going to try semi-hydro until I saw the growth habit.

Also I'm wondering if it will do okay mounted with S. Moss OR does it need more of an orchid mix?

I don't have any experience with the bulbos.

My goal will be to show the orchid as well as enjoy it so I need to make sure I mount/pot it to the best flowering advantage.

:lovesite:thanx:

Hi!
I have a division of a B. carunculatum that has had a spike growing on it for about 2 months. The spike had been growing quite quickly and looking greatly, until the last two days. In the last couple days, the tip of the spike started turning do a dark brown, almost black color. Does anyone have any ideas what this is?

So recently I have acquired a bunch of bulbos. I havent heard back from the seller yet, so Id like to get your ideas and criticisms on how they are being kept.

The ones in question are:

B. ambrosia
trichosephalum
capillipes
sessile
glebulosum
alagense large and small form

I have them mounted 2 ways...in a mini tank, and in a humidity dome.

Here are the ones in the mini tank...the top is about 3-4 inches from a T12 shoplight...some i mounted to lfs and some i just "tied" to the corkbark, im not sure which way Im supposed to have it....

The ones not in the tank I have mounted ("floss-tied") to either cork or epiweb. I have no lfs under any of these...these are in a 100% humidity dome a good distance away from a T10 bulb.

Some immediate questions...

1) do i need to have lfs under all of them
2) how often do i mist them
3) do i need to hang them or can they rest on the floor on the cork like that
4) what type of water should i spray them with.

Thanks for putting up with my essay!

Okay, finally used a web resizer and uploaded some of these pictures to my gallery. This is from a blooming in mid-August. The plant is very vigorous; it's got 4 new leads growing and has been throwing up groups of spikes like this for several months, though it's slowing down with the flowering now. It's in a 12-inch wooden basket (it's quite a rambler) and is potted in sphagnum and tree fern chunks/fiber. I soak it about every week or two and then just sit it near a bright window and let it do its thing. :)

I just received this plant from a dear friend I met on the forum. It was sent to me out of the kindness of their heart... and the thought I might give it better care.....that's a joke!!!!!! Anyway, I don't want to let them down or embarrass myself, so if any Bulbo growers might help out, I'd appreciated it. I'm looking for general as well as genus specific care. I have divided my Cirr. Elizabeth Ann with very good success and this plant, as you can see is sprawling and needs repot/division. It is currently growing in bark; the lightly placed sphagnum is my hope that all the air roots will make it til spring and some new growth and then divide.

:waving all, just wanted to show off my new acquisitions. One of my customers called me this afternoon to tell me that I had left something at his house. When I asked what it was, he replied "I'm not sure what it is, just come by on your way home". He handed me a box and when I opened it there were 3 orchids
1 Bulbophyllum bicolor
1 Bulbophyllum rothschildianum
1 Bulbophyllum veitchianum
I was in shock. Then he gave me the Aug. 09 issue of the AOS magazine and on the back cover showed me them being a advertised special from Krull Smith. Well packed. Has anyone bought from them before?

Got this in February with one bloom. It began throwing spikes last month, but a few of them blasted. Thanks to advice from OB member Tom-DE, I moved it to a slightly different location where it wouldn't get quite so much air movement. Et voila! Five buds made it to blooming! In the photo, one bloom is on it's last legs. I only wish Bulbo blooms lasted longer than they do. Close-up photo is from Feb.

Yeah! Despite temps in the high 90s, a week of straight rain, and a cold snap last week, my fussy bulbos are blooming.

Here are the first blooms from my Medusas my Cirrhopetalum Elizabeth Ann “Buckleberry”. (Not rothschidianum as listed in subject - sorry, my bad)

There are all thriving quite well in the new greenhouse. I think that the tree frog and anole free range "fertilizer" helps.

They get soaked once a day (with just the hose) at sunset. The greenhouse is covered in 40% shade cloth and the bulbos are hanging near the door which is always opened for ventilation. The humidity will drop to around 20% in late afternoon then I'll soak them so they can soak it up over night. They haven't had any fertilizer (other than frog and lizard poop) since April.

My "Darwin theory" of orchid care seems to be agreeing with the bulbos. (And I haven't lost a single orchid out there and I'm growing everything from Vandas to bulbos in those conditions)

The photos are a bit fuzzy - my Blackberry isn't great at close up photos.

So I got this jersey from one of the vendors hosted by the Maryland Orchid Society a few months ago, and it's growing very well. Two new leaves have sprouted and two flowers (on the same stem) since getting it. This is the first flower to mature & open, but as you can see, the lateral sepals are not separating as it should. Not too happy about that. Have a feeling the second flower will be the same *sigh*. Still a gorgeous plant to look at and admire despite its flaws...

I've love my Bulbos...have around 20 but there are 3 that I'm anxiously waiting to start seeing signs of spiking. I'm in hot, humid, Florida, aka Bulbo heaven and this year has been record breaking hot and humid so, where are my spikes? :tapfoot: Oh, that's right...I forgot...P.A.T.I.E.N.C.E.

My Daisy Chain is spiking now but give me blooms...PLEASE on my Wilmar Galaxy (pic 1), medusae (pic 2) and my rothschildianum 'Henry Scardefield' (pic 3, front right).

P.S. Hoping everyone is enjoying their summer. I've got a lot of catching up to do around here.

I wonder if someone could tell me how to grow bulbo falcatum. I received one a few months ago from my orchid society and I have killed all the bulbos I have ever had.

I had tried growing it under lights and also in the kitchen window. I don't know if it likes it that cool since we do have the air condition on. It is pretty dark green and looks okay but does not seem to be growing. I wonder if I can put it outside but the temperature gets up to the high 90s outside in the greenhouse.

What to do...what to do:)
My question is, how can these new nubbins be identified as inflorescences or new growths...before it's actually obvious?
Thanks,
This a primary hybrid between lobbii and leysanianum. They grow very bright (next to my Catt amethystoglossas) and if you stick your nose right next to the flowers they smell like dirty gym socks! The scent is fairly week though, so no worries about stinking up the growing area! You will notice that one of our black ladybugs makes a cameo in some of the pics. These guys live in the thousands around my house and the adults and larvae are just EVERYWHERE all year round! On the one hand its nice to have such predatory insects, but on the other hand its a little unnerving to know that there are enough aphids around my orchids to support such a massive population of predators! Luckily there must be something much tastier around for the aphids to suck on because I have almost no problems with them on my 'chids. Enjoy!

It was kind of bright today, so these pics are not exactly stellar. Anyway, I picked this little gem up a few weeks ago and cannot take credit for the blooms or new growth. Im surprised by how quickly the blooms fade. Either these are short lived flowers or something is trying to fertilize the flowers and is taking the the pollen. Any thoughts? :scratchhead: And the smell is kinda like a cheese whose name escapes me. Its not pleasant!!!

I have a Bulb. lobbi that bloomed the first year I got it. That was 3 seasons ago and it has added a new bulb each year since but has failed to bloom again.

I "think" I might not be watering it enough as it gets watered each time my potted plants do and, since it is mounted (came that way from the grower), it probably should be watered more often.

My growing area is on an auto watering system and, since I can't change the watering schedule, - can I dismount this plant (or should that be "unmount") and put it in a pot/basket? If so, what kind of pot & potting mix should I try?

Any guidance is appreciated.

:wavingJust became the proud new owner of a Cirrhopetalum Elizabeth ann jean orchid. In trying to understand the genesis of this plant I consistently came across the Cirrhopetalum Elizabeth Ann Buckleberry variety. Both are listed as being hybrids of Cirr. rothschildianum and Cirr. longissimum. Whats the difference? Are they the same plant?

hey guys,

i'm just wondering, what are some bulbophyllum species/hybrids that:

(1) appear not to have any rhizome (not leggy)
(2) windowsill growing possible
(3) the lack of an extreme scent
(4) doesn't grow huge (as in per pseudobulb basis)

i really like ones that are star shaped like lobbii, dearei, and sumatranum. but i am now sure if these could be brought into bloom... or even if they could survive the windowsill... any bulbophyllum lovers care to chip in your $0.02? thanks

i currently have 1 cirrhopetalum lepidum and is growing 2 new leads--the one lead last year didn't make it for some reason... just turned black and died =( is that a rot issue or a lack of humidity issue?

this is it from last year, can't take credit for spiking it --at least i don't think so... i bought in bloom, but this second flowering came about a month after the original bloom faded...

So here's the question...Can Bulbophyllums send out a second spike from a pseudobulb which has already spiked in the past?

I imagine it's possible...because that's what is happening right now with my Bulbo. guttulatum. And I'm quite surprised. The same pseudobulb which put out a spike back in September is now putting out another.

Is this normal? :scratchhead:

Many thanks! :bowing

Have had this for about a year. Was growing really nicely all along and then....a black spot, first on one of the leafs, then traveled down to the bulbs. I tried catching the next spotting before it reached the bulbs, cutting out and treating each leaf first (and the entire plant) but within a week, another black spot on another leaf, and so on...each leaf, one by one....turned black.

I'm assuming it's viral. Don't know if I could have done anything more or if it was destined to croak once the first black spot appeared. Any suggestions for the next time this happens? From my experience, once this happens, the attack always wins out, but maybe not?

Howdy, folks! Single bloom open for me now on this really amazing Bulbo. Can't take credit for it, just received the little guy a couple weeks ago.

Each of B. pardalotum's blooms open each morning and close each night.

This seems to be as open as he wants to be for me, but I wish he'd be more open. The photos are very true to color, but I wish I were better able to capture the detail of the spotty lines of red.

No fragrance. Just cute cute cute!
But one source told me that this variety, the rothschildianum, smells like ripe peaches while another source says that this variety smells like bad fish. Anyone out there actually grown or smelled this species?:scratchhead: I'm excited either way, the blossoms are so unique in this Genus. Oh yeah, does this one like to be mounted? Im a newbie also so if anyone has cultural tips that would be cool.

When it first opens the flower is over 12 inches from tip to tip...

Is that a spike? I would only imagine it is, because its completely different from what an immature psuedobulb looks like, it also has the sheathed look that spikes usually have, from the few orchids i've seen flower. Im really new to orchids, but i guess i have somewhat of a greenthumb, as i dont kill much. Anyways i guess since this is a spring bloomer, its getting ready to put out that flower in spring? i thought it was a fall and spring bloomer, but from what that huge orchid website says, its spring.

Thanks for letting me know, and check out my gallery, i just got a camera and posted what few nicely potted plants i have. I got alot of pots that im about to drill drainage holes in this week, and will repot alot. So check back.

First bloom for me, for this one. I took a series of shots over the course of two weeks. This is Bulbophyllum medusae in bud and then in bloom. Kinda weird (borderline creepy, actually) to watch the thing unfurling and untangling itself from inside the sheath! It's very alien-looking. Odd smell, too; not unpleasant exactly, like a lot of other Bulbos, but... different.

Hi

I picked up these guys from a nursery that collected them from logging forest under license. I don't know how many there are but for reference they're crammed there into a seedling tray, Each pseudobulb would be about the size of a pea.

I've never had a Bulbophyllum before, so how should i care for them? Mount on tree-fern or something? do they handle being constantly wet or do they need a dry period?

We have had a plant for several years - it grows well, has good colour and generally seems to be doing well but, it has never bloomed for us. The plant is in a 4" pot (which it has almost filled); we keep it in amongst our Phals - it gets a fair bit of natural light, and temps in the 22C to 18C range (indoors - it summers outdoors in a shaded spot). It is potted in medium bark with moss added to retain moisture.
Any 'tricks' we could use to get a flower? We would dearly like to see a bloom on this one!
Thanks,
