Hi all,
I need a little help deciding on a greenhouse. After a year and a half of research (and saving) I am ready to purchase. I have narrowed down the choice to two models. I have never owned a greenhouse before and am not sure which one is better for growing orchids. I have been growing in my basement for a while and believe that it was good practice for owning a greenhouse. I am concerned about two items in particular. One, the sidewall height, will I have to stoop in the greenhouse and will it really be a problem. I am only 5’ 10”. The other concern is the wall thickness, do I really need a 10mm thickness in the Midwest. I have included the dimensions of the models I am considering. Any and all help would be appreciated.

Model	Juliana Premium 9.9 Halls Optimum 96
Height	7' 10" 8' 1"
Width	9' 1" 8' 2"
Length	12' 2" 12' 8"
Sidewalls	4' 9" 6' 3"
Covering	10 mm twin wall poly 6 mm twin wall poly

Hello. I'm new to the Orchid Board, and this is my first post. I've been growing orchids under lights for ~15 years. I finally dove in and bought a kit greenhouse. It's very exciting but a bit intimidating too. I had 60 orchids all over the house. My poor husband even put up with the cymbidiums in the bath tub trying to keep them cold enough to get their spikes.

My greenhouse is 6'5" x 13'. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised that the greenhouse already looks quite full. I definitely need limits when it comes to orchids, so I wouldn't have wanted a different size. I'd just end up filling that too. Anyway, if anyone has advice on learning to adapt to greenhouse growing, I'd appreciate it.

I've been reading the Orchid Board for awhile to answer my growing questions. It's so nice to read posts from all over the world. What a great community!

Hello all,

Fairly new to this site. Bought this greenhouse last spring. Prefab, single wall fiberglass, corrugated, aluminum frame. The stone on the floor is 12 inches of #53 stone which packed down real nice and drains like a seive(filter fabric underneath the stone). Gas heat with electric backup. Vents installed this summer. Had to do additional caulking as I found out last spring that the fiberglass sheets weren't one piece. Added 30% shade cloth this summer. About 25% of the plants came from my collection I had when I moved here. I still want to widen the benches since I ran out of room already.

Greenhouse Growing in Colorado

We live in Colorado and to say the least, it's a challenge growing much of anything out here except pine and Aspen trees, Columbines (they're my favorite). Flowers? Hmmm.... Holly Hock, tulips, daffadills and the like.

This last year my wife and I visited Colombia (her native country). In Colorado we have small yellow daisies growing by the side of the roads. In Colombia, Orchids grow everywhere! I was amazed and impressed.

Now, of course I can't grow orchids outside in Colorado, but I began growing orchids in a greenhouse that I found online and it's great. Let me tell you about it.

It's a twin-walled 10mm polycarbonate greenhouse with dimensions of 8' x 14' x 7' 6". It has double sliding doors in the front, 4 roof vents, a galvanized steel base and came with staging tables along the two long sides and the back wall. A second set of shelves is suspended over the 36" high staging tables. And here's the best part.... I got it for under $2,000 delivered! I was looking everywhere and could only find similar greenhouses for $4,000 to $5,000 which was more than I wanted to spend. The only downside was that I had to wait about 5 weeks for it to arrive as it came from overseas. However, the wait was well worth it.

I have to use a 15,000 BTU natural gas vented heater to keep it warm in the winter, but there's nothing better than going out to my greenhouse in the middle of winter, while watching is snow, and be surrounded by beautiful plants, moist tropical air and the smells of soil, plants and there's even some insects in there that made the greenhouse their home for the winter. I added a humidifier and misting system as well. On sunny winter days I even have to open the roof vents a little as it get's too hot inside.

Now, I'm not an expert in orchids. I grew up in Ohio! But, I'm slowly learning and finally putting my degree in Ag to use.

Just thought I'd share this with you. Growing orchids in Colorado is possible and very enjoyable.

Well here I sit in my lounge chair in the living room. I have been sitting here since last Friday. I haven't been to the greenhouse since the 23rd and boy do I miss it. I have a friend coming up to the house to open and close the green house. When my daughter was here while I was in the hospital she watered and took care of things. I am afraid that the orchids are not getting the tlc they need and are suffering. I had a total knee repelacement and I guess feeling a bit sorry for my self. Do you think they will survive? I know that some need to be watered every day like my project plant. My friend doesn't know a thing about orchids so I am worried.
Keep your fingers crossed.
The following have all failed this summer: 1) exhaust fan, 2) 150 psi misting pump, 3) transformer for electrostatic fogger, and 4) temperature/humidity transmitter. I would really welcome recommendations for reliable replacements for these items.

I want to install a auto watering system with a timer and basically was looking for guidance on the misters or watering heads. The Orchids hang on the edge of the lenai and the plan so far is either pvc tubing and some sort of screw in misting nozzles.....any guidance appreciated.

Hello everyone. I'm happy to finally be able to build something for my chids! I stole a small bit of real estate from my Mom's backyard to do it......

Hello everyone. I'm happy to finally be able to build something for my chids! I stole a small bit of real estate from my Mom's backyard to do it... since I live in an apartment. But it's okay, as long as I build her an herb garden. I finally got a job after six months of searching, but I'm getting paid less than half of what I use to... so I'm on a budget. I wanted this shade house to have all aspects to grow healthy orchids but not break the bank. Here's what I did:

I picked a nice sunny location away from the rubber tree, I'm currently growing the orchids under it but there's too much shade. I wanted to take advantage of the natural air flow in the yard so the shade cloth will only go half way down the side, plus air passes through the shade cloth as well... and I don't have to run electrical for a fan.

The roof is gonna be cool, I think. I saw a guy on YouTube make an entire green house like this, I only used it for the roof. It's hard to explain but a simple idea. It's the forth picture, I made it a little wider than the shade house so I can bend the PVC to make a arch. I'll post the pics next week when I put it on. Then I will put greenhouse film on top to protect them from rain. I know, rain is the best watter, but here it rains so much and at night and I was a bit worried about disease and fungus.

I still have a lot to do so I will add pics as I progress.

Thanks for looking!

First I picked a nice sunny spot.

I cleared the ground (the hardest part of all!!) and built the frame. I used a quick dry concrete that you pour in the hole as a powder and then add water.. no mixing!!

I stained it to protect it from the elements, even though the wood is pressure treated.

The grid of PVC that will be the roof. I primed it and painted it gloss white to help prevent crystallization from sun exposure.

Hi,
I have been browsing though pictures of greenhouses looking for ideas for my new gh. In some of the pictures, I noticed what looked like Spanish moss...either hanging over plants or hanging by itself. I'm only curious if the moss serves a purpose or is it for aesthetics only.
I would appreciate knowing your thoughts,

Hi everyone
We bought a 10'x17'x7' (approx.) Sunglo greenhouse in the Spring and now I'm ready to move my orchids out there but I must first figure out a way to cool it! Our Alabama summer temps are outrageously hot!!! The heat inside the greenhouse is almost unbearable to people, much less orchids!!! During my trial tests, I have had the exaust fan running constantly, another large fan running on high, and also have my 60% aluminet shadecloth overhead. I have read back through some older posts, but I'm just not sure if anything that has been discussed will work for me (PLEASE correct me if I've overlooked any comments). I have understood that we have too much humidity down here for a swamp cooler to work efficiently, and an airconditioner does not seem to be a good option, either. I was browsing foggers and misters earlier this morn. and I ran across a system that I'd like to know more about. Do any of you have the 6004 misting system from Charley's Greenhouse Supply ( Charley's Greenhouse & Garden Charley& 39s Humidity System with Humidistat )? If so, I would appreciate knowing your cooling experience with it. I would also appreciate knowing experiences any of you have had with cooling of any kind. ALL advice is more than welcome.

Swamp Cooler Advice

I guess I've made the decision to get a swamp cooler for the green house. It's just getting too hot in there.

I've been unsure just how well one would work since we have high humidity in Arkansas. But after several days of 100 degree tempatures, the dew point does fall. So it should be of some help.

The exhaust fan has been running non-stop for days, even at night! The fogger is a life saver and of course the box fans in the window and shade cloth all work, too.

It's just not enough! :((

Any suggestions on what to buy and where to buy it?

Also, need suggestions on where to place it. I gather the lower the better? Swamp cooler at one end, opposite end of exhaust fan?

Any pearls of wisdom appreciated! :waving

Hi gang,:waving
My spousal unit built me a fancy humidifier with a fan and some of that funky looking corrugate for the fan to blow through. It's been getting nasty hot (over 100F/40C), so this has been a really nice addition. It keeps the gh cool and my humidistat has been reading 50 in the hottest part of the day and up into the 60's when it cools off (this "cooling off" is relative, of course ;)). I have been in the habit of misting my plants as often as I could during the day and now, I am wondering if I should or how I would know when to mist or water? Any input? Thank you!

Hi everyone,
(Is this how I update an old thread...by starting a new one?? Not sure the correct way ??)

Hi everyone,
(Is this how I update an old thread...by starting a new one?? Not sure the correct way ??)

Anyway, just my good news I wanna share (initial post below):

A carpenter-guy and his wife finished getting my new greenhouse up. :>) As I've read in another member's thread, a "kit greenhouse" is NOT as easy and quick to put up as the advertisement says.

Anyway, I have pictures attached (no, that's not me standing in the picture...it's "the wife"). I hope they don't bore you stiff, but I'm afraid they will, though...so I'm sorry if you get tired of reading and looking.

For elec: my husband had originally planned to use the existing wiring that he ran to our house a long time ago... initially for elec going to a huge, old satellite dish (now my GH location). It was one of those monster dishes before the current small ones. His plans have changed, though. He has decided to pull all that old wiring out that is going through existing conduit [sp.?] to under the concrete slab inside the GH. He's gotta cut the "green satellite pole" off of the slab 1st then rewire it totally because, for one thing, it is as old as it is, and another thing is that I told him I wanted to have this, that, and the other and a few more "extras" sometime ($ allowing)....thus more elec. lol He tells me that a guy plans to do that this week. ?? (I've already told him that I want several outlets, by the way)

As for benches: we plan for the same carpenter to build some for me.

As for foundation: my husband decided on wood flooring over gravel over landscape cloth.

As for heat: I already know that's going to be a problem. It's about 473 degrees in there now...bigtime hot! Fans alone will be far from enough cooling. Of course, I'll use them for air circulation, though. There's not a window for an airconditioner, or an opening to run the thing that goes to an outside airconditioner, either (Howard and Betty...you know how a Sunglo is built). I understand that a swamp cooler wouldn't fit the bill for me, either....too much humidity in Alabama for one.

Now, for my request: I would appreciate it if you will please tell me the things I will basically need for now so that I can put my orchids out there. I would very much like to provide them with more light than they're getting (especially my catts and 2 vandas). All other advice will be more than appreciated! Cooling for summer, for sure.

Needless to say: I AM EXCITED! I can hardly wait to get "up and running".

Hi everyone! :waving
I am soooo excited.....I just want to share my excitement with you! I'm sorry.....I hope you don't mind my long post. I can hardly contain myself to get anything else done (housework, errands, etc.) because my mind is totally elsewhere.....the Sunglo greenhouse my husband ordered for me earlier this week!:biggrin:  Needless to say, I'm really looking forward to getting it, but I've prepared myself for the worst.....don't know what, but you never know. :evil:Maybe the "handy man" won't know exactly what to do.....maybe my husband won't have a whole lotta time to help put it up.....heck.....I'm just a paranoid worrier (some of you already know that, though) :dunno: Howard (aka Bikerdoc), I know you have the same greenhouse, so by any chance can you see your way clear to come down to Alabama to help me? (lol).....I have no doubt that you and some of the other members would know exactly what we need to get it going. Seriously, I know I will need tons of advice, so all help from any of you will be appreciated. PM me if you don't mind and have the time. I need to know the pros and cons, too.

Anyway, I feel a little silly.....acting like this because I know it's premature since it will be a few weeks before it arrives...and then I have no idea when it will be "up and running" (so to speak).....but I can't help getting excited that having one is even planned.

So I couldn't stand it anymore. I had to build a greenhouse. The design is by my hubby. He did all the heavy building. I supervised.

It is 8'x11' and on a concrete slab (already existing in my backyard). 6'H at the door plus 3' more at the ridge so 9'H down the center.

2x4 PT Pine construction with a 2x6 PT ridgepole and 4x4 PT corner posts. So far cost is about $300 but we are not finished yet.

I am now researching shelving and exterior materials.

Hubby and I are having a "discussion" over the finishing details. I really like the metal mesh that was used in the post here in this forum for the shade house but I am wondering about cost. I want to have it finished in the next 2 weeks.

Any ideas or suggestions are welcomed.

Okay, I live in the hot and sometimes humid south US. I have a greenhouse but am pondering the pros and cons of installing evaporative cooling or trying to build a shade house of some kind for summer.

Would a swamp cooler work here? How much power do they use? Always have to consider the electric bill. :((

I know orchids enjoy their summer vacations in the outdoors. Would it be more feasible to erect some type of shade house? I'd have to be able to keep the insects out!!!

I have about 150 plants, mostly cattleya and not all of them have hangers but I suppose they could have. Some are small and still on the bench.

Oh and another hitch might be in getting DH to do the manual labor....again!

So what do you think? I want the best solutions for the catts as they are my primary concern.

Greetings,

Well, my new greenhouse turns out to have some problems with keeping the heat. Now I did a bunch of things to keep the heat in that the contractor didn't do correctly (like using the correct type of caulk) and done other things to keep the heat down low by the plants. Part of the problem is that I got a rather large greenhouse. If it was smaller I think the heat I used would have worked a lot better.

Anyway, over the summer I am going to do some things to help it out but I think it will always be a bit towards the cool/cold side; just not as cold as it was this winter!

So what I would like to know is besides the obvious orchids like Cymbidiums & Masds. genera in general, what plants would you recommend?

My Laleas (sp) survived, some Catts (mostly species) a couple of Austrailian Dendrobs & some various hybrids. My Cyms are happy as clams and, although flowering was a bit retarded because of the cold, they are flowering, especially the cascading ones with devonianum in their lines.
.
Please suggest away!
Thanks,
Randy

Well, I got through winter with $300 a month elec. bills . Now it looks like spring is here finally... The sun here in Central Oregon can get pretty intense even when its only 76 degrees. After finding a few fried leaves and panic setting in it was off to Home Depot for shade cloth. I purchased yards of the stuff and hung it inside the GH using velcro works pretty good. I think though that by the time summer gets here with its 90 degree days I will drape shade cloth over the top of the GH. Opening both windows on each end and turning on the large fan it keeps the air moving very well. Most of my chids are in s/h and dry out soooo fast. I will take some photo's tomorrow and post them. Most chids are doing fine but some are loosing ground.

What practices do you put into place to protect your huge collection of orchids from insects?

In your post showing your lovely greenhouse/shadehouse, you mentioned the sides are down several months during the year. This made me wonder about insects.

Here in the southern US we have not only scale and mealies and a few others to worry about but also grasshoppers that can eat an orchid leaf or flower over night!

What are your views and practices on viruses?

I hope you don't mind me asking these questions of you.

Anybody and everybody is also invited to jump in here.

Just returned from a month-long trip to Panama (I'll post some pics shortly) to find a problem in my greenhouse.

Background:

My greenhouse is VERY small, but I still have almost everything "automated". We spend time at a 2nd home, and take 3-4 week vacations at least once a year, so my orchids are "home alone" frequently. I do have our pet sitter fertilize while I'm gone, but other than that, "the system" takes care of everything else.

When we returned recently, I noticed a black sort of deposit on everything. At first I thought it was some sort of mold/mildew, but it was EVERYWHERE, even on hard and dry surfaces.

It turns out that it is soot from a small electrical fire in a fan that happened just before I returned. I recently replaced my old fans with waterproof fans (from Grower's Supply, if anyone is interested). I had not gotten around to removing all the old fans, but I was sure that I had them all disconnected from power, but, it turns out I had forgotten one. Of course it burned . . . and WHAT A MESS!

What I'm wondering about, is will this fine (like talcum powder or finer) soot kill things? I will obviously have to wash/clean all the plants and really the whole greenhouse. This is going to take some time.

I plan to move ALL the plants out this weekend, clean out the greenhouse itself, then start to clean the plants (I've done some of them already) individually, then replace them in the greenhouse.

ANY IDEAS about how best to clean them? Some of them will be easy enough, but many are small/fragile, and trying to clean each leaf will likely do some damage.

ANY IDEAS about any chemical/physical/systemic damage might have been caused by this soot? It's so fine, I'm sure it is blocking pores and interfering with normal respiration, but what else?

Any thoughts will be appreciated!

Thanks.

QUESTION - Using Physan 20 in ALL greenhouse water ?

I'm not sure if this is the correct forum for this, but if an admin feels it should be moved, go ahead and do so.

I have a large RO system with pressure tank for all of my greenhouse watering (misting is straight "house water"), and it feeds through an irrigation controller, so I have several "zones" with different watering cycles. I do any other watering manually, and have a "plain water" hose, and one that runs through a Dosatron for fertilizing (both also RO water).

My question is:

I have a spare Dosatron injector. Could I set this up so that ALL water going into my automatic system is injected with Physan 20 (BEYOND the RO, obviously)? I've used Physan 20 for years and it has worked well as a bactericide/fungicide.

I just wonder if applying the Physan automatically every time I water, would be a good prophylactic measure to keep algae, fungus, etc. at bay.

I'll be re-configuring my irrigation zones, which will involve re-plumbing the valve set-up, so it would be easy to do at the same time. Any problems with combining it with the fertilizer watering?

Any experience, ideas, opinions, comments, etc. are welcome. (ANY comments . . . call me an idiot if you want to . . . just explain WHY I'm an idiot, and that will be helpful).

Thanks in advance.

This has taken ages to build, well several weekends anyway. It feels like a long time. I need to build the door and then it's pretty much done. Trying to separate parts with different levels of shade is proving more difficult than I thought. A good reason to specialise in a particular genera!!!

It is 6 metres by 3 metres. The shade cloth is 70% sandstone and the roof is polycarbonate. If you have any questions then let me know.

Holes in the ground.......

Then we built the individual frames.....

Exciting I know, a pile of frames.......

The frames up:

With the roof on:

A different angle:

Putting up the shade cloth!

The shade ceiling finally up!

The shelves are built - hot dipped welded mesh.

Another angle of the shelves:

Shade cloth on the sides:

Plants in the house! Woohoo!!!!

We still need a door though.

Hey everyone. Looking for a little expertise to help me decide whether to buy this thing or not. My husband found a 6'x10' lean-to style greenhouse at a client's house and they want to sell it. It is in perfect condition, with glass panels intact, 2 vents, some hanging rails, a heater, and a bench included. They paid over $2k, but will sell it for $500 and even help disassemble and load the thing for my hubby. I think that's a pretty great deal, but not sure if I need it in this climate. Here's my specifics to consider.

We live in Central Florida, so it's pretty toasty outside most of the year. We did have numerous dips into the 20's and 30's this winter which killed a lot of my ordinary plants despite the whole frost cloth protection method. All my orchids were brought inside which made my kitchen look like a jungle for 2 months (plus it was a pain in the butt hauling them in and out over and over.)

If I buy it, I have two options for where to put this greenhouse. The best fit is along a rear wall of my house which receives direct sun all day. I'm afraid in summer it will be about 5000 degrees in there with the vents open. I would have to use shade cloth and/or maybe remove the roof panels to let heat escapre. The alternative location is shaded by a 2 huge oak trees which occasionally drop branches, so that's a huge risk to the glass and probably a dealbreaker.

I have a steadily growing collection of orchids, currently about 15. The owner of this greenhouse says he fit about 40 plants in there pretty well.

Attached are 2 photos of the gh in the current owner's backyard. (homeowners assoc required him to keep it under his pool cage... weird).

What would you do if you were me? Buy it or not?

So I've got a great price on these 2' x 4' glass panels.

http://corporateportal.ppg.com/NR/rd...learthtone.pdf

That web site has the specs on this glass in the Table of Performance Values.

It indicates the glass has a visible transmittance of 17%.

I am trying to figure out if this glass is feasible to put in the roof of a greenhouse (45degree angle lean to w/ 4' knee wall type) I can get 20 panels for $25 each/ normally they are $27 per sq. foot.

What do you think, is this a waste of time. It looks to me as though supplemental lighting will be needed for seedlings, which would be the primary purpose.

Thanks,
Pete

As though I didn't have enough places to grow my orchids, I decided that I must have a greenhouse. After years and years of exhausting research and lack of money to buy the best of the best, we settled on an Easy Grow 8' x 12' kit. It has two roof vents that automatically open when temps are too high and an exhaust vent in the lower right hand corner of the front panel. So far, it's been pretty easy to put together but then I've been supervising as my DH and brother have done all the work...I'm blonde, not stupid

Here are some pictures of what they have done thus far. Today we will be building a 3 course block wall that the structure will sit on top of (currently it's only 7.2' at the pitch of the roof...that just won't do, so we're elevating it!

I have been trying to figure out a way to heat my greenhouse in the winter time, without relying on electricity, because sooner or later, the price of electricity will be prohibitive to heat my greenhouse. The other problem is that in the wintertime it has a tendency to get kind of cold. I am looking to see if it is possible that solar heat is the answer. It is a small greenhouse, 8 X 10, but I thought that maybe I could also use it to reduce other costs in the house. I live in a small home also.

In an 8 x 7.5 GH what should the humidity be during the day and evening. My GH seems to be to dry 30 to 40 % humidity. Until I move a misting system in there I have been hand misting several times a day. Doesn't seem to be enough.
Would love to hear some suggestions

I grow catts and phals in my GH. I have the day temps set at 75 deg and nights at 64 deg. My question has to do with day temps and cloudy days. Should I just have a minimum temp set on the thermostat only and let the sun warm the GH or do I leave the setup the way it is so the phals arent chilled on a cloudy day. The problem with letting the sun do the work of heating the GH is that a couple of hours after the sun starts to heat the GH it gets blocked, for about twenty min by a nieghbors tree, then hits the Gh again. So my main concern is keeping temps constant. Any thoughts on this subject. Thanks

I have a 25 gpd RO unit and have recently moved from a 2'x4' orchidarium to a 12'x12' greenhouse. I find I need much more water to raise the humidity. I also found that even with vents, exhaust fan, and shadecloth I need additional cooling in the summer. I have excellent air circulation. I do not now have the ability to collect rain water but might be able to do this in the future. So, I have several questions as follows:

1. If I mist under benches for cooling during summer, should I use RO/rain water or is tap water ok?

2. Can I also use tap water to raise humidity?

3. Can I use RO/rain water interchangeably for watering?

I will be very grateful for answers or any other relevant advice.

Hello all,

We built a kit Greenhouse in Apr. of this year to house our growing collection of more temperature sensitive orchids, as we live in So. Cal. we have several orchids that grow outdoors year round(Catts., Schms., Onc.,Lealias, and a couple of others).

We have a small backyard so we had to get a 8*6 footer, but I needed the height since I am 6'7" tall, so we built a 2 1/2' brick wall and sealed it with water proofing and paint, built a lower door under greenhouse door to act as a vent and a way to get in without having to step over a wall.

So far the greehouse is great, many more orchids that we can grow. Some Catts. that were outdoors growing good are doing way better in there. Now we have over 300 orchids and still looking for some other small ones.

The greenhouse came with tables built in and is double polycarbonate (holds heat in cold weather very well), also a roof vent with an auto vent opener adjustable to different degrees. Greenhouse took 2 days to build, 1 to assemble and one to seal and chaulk and set in place and secure.

We are very pleased with this kit and would highly recommend it, the plants are happy and so are we.

Pictures are under Orchidbyte in the gallery area
Thank you. Gary

Well folks I jumped in and got my feet wet :_( I ordered a greenhouse. This would be my second GH the first being a Sunglo like Bikerdoc's that was way back in the 70's. Then I raised cactus. I have a potting shed of sorts which I could have used but its not in good condition inside and since I have to do all the work it was easier to buy a free standing. Its a Solar Gem Greenhouse made fiberglass with a gel coating made in Tacoma, WA and is a one piece unit measuring 8x7.5x8 with one auto vent on top, bottom vent and 2 doors one at each end. I had the extra door added instead of the window due to where it will be located. The doors are regular storm doors in vinyl door frames. It comes with one double bench with hanging rail and one single bench with hanging rail and potting bin.

Walking thru my garden I will be able to walk thru the greenhouse as it will be located in a walkway of sorts. It will be delivered around the 12th of Dec. so until then I have to dig the trench 10" wide and 3" deep :crossfing .

:photo: will show the area it will be placed. As you can see I am getting the site ready moving sprinkler system and old raised garden bed. As I progress with this adventure I will post more photos.

Some of the OBoaders friends have been asking for some photos of my growing area and I finally had time to put them together. They are all in my Gallery.
Some of the photos were taken in the winter, when my area works like a greenhouse, completely enclosed, and some were taken a few days ago with the area realeased from the side covers.
Some could ask... but where are the flowers? Well, the flowers I keep on a separate bench when they bloom, that's why they're not seen anywhere :) !

So I just got a small greenhouse from craigslist.

It is 4'x4'x5'

I live in San Diego, and so this greenhouse is going to be mostly for my warm growers (tolumnias, catasetinae, etc). I will need a little bit of heating for it, as our winter temps will drop down to 40F or so for a couple months. So I'm thinking for the most part I'll need about 20F night heating in 80 cubic feet. I would like it waterproof, because the greenhouse is square, all the racks are on the perimeter, and it doesn't have a standard "isle".

Anyone have any ideas?

Well, I bit the bullet yesterday and moved the chids into my little greenhouse.

For the past week I've been monitoring temps and humidity using my idea of borrowing the heat from my workshop to warm the ghouse. Well, half of my idea worked, the other half didn't. :(

Temperature wasn't too hard to control but I found I had no control over humidity. I could soak the greenhouse floor and benches with water and the humidity jumped to about 40% and then within half an hour it fell back to about 30%. My shop was supplying heat but stealing all the humidity.

This morning I went to Lowes and got a DeLonghi space heater. With the heater on and the doors to my shop closed things started to look much better. I added a small 4 inch muffin fan to help move the heat around. Tonight I think I might be able to grow orchids instead of cactus.

I just checked the ghouse tonight it's 25f outside and temps are right around 60F and the humidity is right at 50%, instead of 25% like last night.

Pictures of my puny collection. :_(
