My Orbit Misting System

Just to show that I am handy too, I installed the misting system for the shadehouse.

This system does not use any electrical power pump. It is controlled by a battery powered timer hooked to the water spigot. It can hold up to 4 stations but we only needed 2. Each station can be programmed for up to 3 cycles per day for up to 2.5 hours in length in minute increments.

It is not as flexible as the Mist King system but we needed the electrical outlet and the reservoir took up orchid space so we switched over to the hose powered system.

The Orbit ArizonaMist was on sale at Home Depot and included a free extension. 12' plus 10' extension with 10 spray nozzles. It is a pre-fab kit that you run and tack with the included nail-in anchor clips.

Cost: $45 for the battery powered 4 station controller with 2 mechanical valves included (2 more can be purchased separately).

Cost: $25 for the mist kit (we purchased 2 so that we could have 2 stations).

We already had 2 Y-valve brass splitters (avoid plastic-they don't hold up). They cost about $10 each.

A nice low-cost alternative for those on a shoe-string budget. Plus extremely easy to install. I put it up by myself in a little over 1 hour. :verycool:

My hubby is so handy. He made me a swamp cooler to keep the phrags/paphs happy.

Check it out.

The material came from 2 old swamp coolers that were being discarded by the botanic garden.

The frame is standard 3/4" PVC that he drilled using micro-bits from Harbor Freight Tools. Standard garden hose with a shut-off valve from the plumbing section (optional as we have a shut-off valve at the water station).

The drain is 2" PVC with end caps glued on and then with a trough cut into it. The drain tube is standard metal threaded nipple onto hose that you get in the plumbing section. We have ours routed down to the sink drain outside of the shadehouse and that drain ends at our Riverbirch tree.

The wire holding the material in is called contractor's cloth but it is actually a metal mesh.

The fan is a squirrel cage or turbine fan available at Home Depot.

Total cost building the swamp cooler about $45. The fan cost $75 and we got the cooler fabric free.

Dimensions are 20"x20" inside and it cools up to about 5' away depending how high the fan is set. We have ours set on medium speed.

Pretty cool and the Phrags, Paphs, and the lone Zygo love it.
For some strange reason I have about four catts that shrivel more each time I water them. Any ideas?
The X-lite polycarbonate was relatively easy to work with but two people would have been better than just me. An able bodied, competent person would have done much better than me but do I care. NO!!!! :D I will be answering little if any questions tonight - or tomorrow probably because at the moment I am way beyond being tired.

The builders eventually arrived today to start building my greenhouse. They needn't have rushed. Greenhouses from Greenhouses Direct decided not to tell me there were parts missing from the delivery and that makes the greenhouse useless until the missing parts arrive next weekend. I would have preferred to have waited the full five weeks until every part was present instead of having the delivery driver, with the worst attitude on earth, inform me that three pieces of glass were missing but they would be here 'this week'. Turns out it's rather more than glass that is missing. Two days after delivery and still no forthcoming notification from Greenhouses from Greenhouses Direct that the parts were missing I emailed them to find out what was going on. Transpires that the louvre frames and everything that goes with them are missing and they wont be with me until next weekend - you know how easily I found builders to do the work in the first instance. I expected my greenhouse to be up and running with the plants all moved out there but that would be too simple, wouldn't it. For want of an email or a call to tell me what was going on I am another £200 for the builders to come out and fit the missing parts next weekend because there is no way I can do it. It looks like this greenhouse will be a beast of a building which is what I needed for my location but it's turning out to be rather more fraught with unnecessary hold-ups than should have happened. I had a good mind to turn the delivery away until all was right but that would probably have incurred additional expense in getting it back up here. At least it's going up but to say I'm furious with Greenhouses from Greenhouses Direct is an understatement. They have not indicated it could be earlier that the missing parts may arrive so I'm not holding out any hope for that to happen. I doubt I will get any satisfaction with being reimbursed the cost of the builders having to come back but I will never deal with this company again. Did they think they were doing me a favour? They were made fully aware of my circumstances from the start. I don't think they thought at all except about themselves. Customer service? Does not exist in this case, so far. Anyway, here are some pics to whet your appetites. Personally, I've lost my appetite.

I would love to have those of you experienced greenhouse growers give me any tips you can. I am planning on setting up a misting system. What do I need to have on hand for chemicals for outdoor growing? What would be best for the floor? I am not going to be able to afford a lot of equipment that is ready made for this, but I am handy and can rig what I need.

The glassed in part will hopefully end up 8 x 12. Lots to plan and lots more materials to collect, but it is a start and I am excited!!!!

Hello all,

Moved out of the greenhouse in Michigan and thinking of putting one up here in central Oregon; as I grow mostly "cold" growers (95% cymbidiums) and the average night temps here in the depths of winter are nowhere near what they were in the midwest, I'm thinking that I can get away with a single southern burner in the gh...but...just wondering if anyone has one that is run off of a portable propane tank as opposed to a "pig"; there's not really a ton of room where the gh will sit & the tank would have to be vertically positioned rather than horizontally...natural gas is not an option, and I'd rather not go the electric route as we sometimes have 24hr+ outages...
Any thoughts?
Thanks!

Hi everybody,

I live in Southern Australia and grow Phalaenopsis spp. All of my plants at this stage are seedlings with leaf spans of around 100mm. I also have one deflasked P. lobbii. I plan on growing more flasks up in the future along with seedlings so I'm wanting to build a small 'mini' glasshouse. I'm planning on building a table - around 2m X 1m which will have heat cable installed under a bed of propagating sand and then covered in coarse gravel. The Phals will sit on the gravel. The sides and roof i'm planning on covering in with twinwall polycarbonate and then i'm going to incorporate some style of door at the front (maybe something that is hinged at the top and i can simply lift up). Internally i'm going to have temperature control, an air circulation system, and also install a small scale fogging system to control the humidity/temperature, I also want to set-up some sort of system so that if the temperature gets too high then vents in the top and at the bottom edges will open to allow some fresh air to flow through. My goal will be about 28oC and 80% RH and then i'll need to take in to consideration the intricacies of some Phal species... I may install lighting down the track if it's necessary. This unit will sit outside so obviously everything will need to be waterproof etc. I might consider moving it inside if I find that the costs associated with keeping it warm are too high. I'm wondering if anybody has any advice on:

1) Grade of twinwall polycarbonate to use
2) Suggestions for thermostats/humidity controllers
3) DIY high pressure fogging systems (1,000PSI units)
4) Suggested heating cable to use
5) Any pitfalls i may come across

Thanks for your time...

Hey again,
I have a new question regarding fans. Should you have your fan point at your orchids or towards the ceil to just move some air? I have a pretty high humidity area. I think my orchids dry a little though if pointed at them. However, I don't know if there is enough movement around the orchids. It's a pretty strong fan and I could turn it to a higher setting. I just don't know what kind of air movement I need.

Hello to all,
1st post and new member here from Va. Short & sweet, in my small greenhouse I have an ongoing ant problem. I have tried insectcidal soap spray, ant traps and removing the affected plant and repotting it outside the greenhouse. I still have the ants returning to a different pot or sometime the same pot that was previously affected. In the greenhouse are 3 Phal., 2 Den., 1 Cat. (mounted on wood),1 very large epidendrum & 1 ??? along with some houseplants, cacti, & live spanish moss. During the cold weather months the ants are more active. I was thinking possibly a carniverous plant like a venus fly trap or maybe some praying mantis' Any one have any thoughts?

Misting Automation Question

I am looking to add automation to a misting setup in my new greenhouse. I am going to stick with the hose-threaded low pressure system, but don't want to operate it manually.

I was thinking that I could use a lawn sprinkler solenoid valve to feed it and then just tie it into my existing sprinkler system/controller (which has unused "zones"). All I really need is for it to spray a few times during the hottest hours of the day. Most of the simple threaded battery-powered timers won't confine their cycles to a specific time of day, and I don't want misting at night!

Has anyone tied their greenhouse system to an existing sprinkler system? Is there some reason why this wouldn't work?

The first drawback I can see is that if I hit "rain delay" for my lawn, my greenhouse also won't get sprayed, but it shouldn't be super-hot on rainy days . . .

So I tried the indoor growing under lights thing, and I got some really great growth and some WONDERFUL spikes and blooms, however... it wrecked my room. I literally had NO problem with humidity. My paint started to bubble. I have to go outside with this, and I'm a little bit scared.

I'm in Texas and I know that we have a Super mild winter, But I just didn't have the ca$h for one of those super awesome greenhouses. So I got a 10x10 from nothern tool. It should be here by Wednesday, but I haven't really figured out much, as I have been working too much lately.

So, it's 10w x 10l x 8h, It's ...

here's the link... Shelterlogic Grow-It Greenhouse — 10ft.L x 10ft.W x 8ft.H, Model# 70606 | Green Houses | Northern Tool + Equipment

I have racks for days, and I have a back yard that has both full sun and full shade. how much sun should I be letting it get? Is this something that I should just put it out there and let it get full sun? Or shelter it in part sun? I also was thinking about heat... and in the winter, I'm wondering do you think that I'm going to need to put a heat lamp or heater of some sort in there? I am having a bunch of reservations about this.... but my spare room looks like someone threw paint thinner on my walls... yeah, I know... it's rediculous! The fish tanks in there had a bit to do with it, but so did the humidifier and the lack of central air with a closed door, and ... well.. I accomplished the humidity indoors, let's just say that.

ANY help and advice is appreciated.

I Thank You in Advance.

As this is my first time using shade cloth in 40 years of growing, when would be a good time to remove it - remember I'm near Philadelphia, 40°N latitude.

I live just outside of Denver, Colorado. I also live above 6500 feet MSL. Our Summers can be hot, our Winters brutally cold, and the wind, well, that's omnipresent.

I am an avid gardener. I grew up in the soil of a farm and love everything about my plants.

Though my house has a solarium, I want a greenhouse.

So I went in search of material to make it. But to be honest, I don't even know where to start. So I'm all ears. I want to hear from people who have experience building and using a greenhouse in my type of environment.

What I can tell you is I have 18x16.5 inch flint glass I can use for the house. I likely have enough for a small to moderately sized house and have it double walled. I have other materials I plan to re use as well, such as sliding insulated glass doors and so on.

So I'm appealing to the forum now for you guys to help me decide how to go with this house.

I think the first thing is to decide how big to go. I'm thinking eight feet wide, seven tall and ten feet long.

The next question is what kind of floor?

Illl try to do up some plans based on some general ideas but I'm letting the forum decide the direction of this house!

So let's have it, peeps! Let the suggesting begin.

I posted this message in the wrong forum and as luck would have it someone was kind enough to tell me about this forum. Anyway I would like to set up a greenhouse. One of my major worries is that at certain times of the year here we have very high winds and I worry about the panels. The greenhouse itself would be well anchored. Any suggestions as to what greenhouse to buy (8X12)? And do you have problems with high winds.

It is official, the old shadehouse that I brought with me to my new house is history. It was leaking like a sieve and my son had patched the fiberglass roof several times. They came over yesterday and tore it down.
So, everything is crammed on to the patio. I have no room to move. It had to happen. I could not get anything to dry out over the past weeks of a monsoon of rain that lasted days. I hope to have a new structure up in the next month or so. One I can close up over winter. I'm still trying to decide exactly what I want. I've scoured the internet for ideas...and haven't hit on anything that I want to look at for the 10 years.
For now, I will have to put up with a big giant mess.

Hi all,
Just moved the "large" plants (too big for the terrarium) into a 6x8 greenhouse in the backyard. the plants seem to be responding nicely, good new adventurous roots, and some spikes developing. Leaf color is lightening up a bit on most as well. All was going fine until I came home today, and saw the roof vent had fallen closed in high wind. Temp soared to over 110 f. And it wasn't even warm, or fully clear skies. I *think* the plants will be fine, they're mostly Cattleya species, and don't seem any worse for the wear initially, but we'll see. Most had been watered recently, nothing like bone dry in 110f with full sun. That would be disaster.
Anyone have any experience with temps like that in a greenhouse? I'd love to know what I have to look forward to... unless it's bad!

Anyway, went out and bought the auto vent opener, it's MUCH sturdier than the support supplied, and should make my life a tad easier. Fingers crossed!

I have the Palram corrugated greenhouse, by the way, and while it's certainly small, I think it's pretty good quality for the price. ($350) It's going on a foundation later on in the summer, to increase the height a bit... I don't fit inside very well!
