I got this when I was on vacation in California in August (I live in New Hampshire). I have absolutely no idea what it is, but I do know that it does have an id--it had one when I bought it, but when I got home with it, the id tag was nowhere to be found. It was blooming back in August. The brown on the pseudobulb is just some spilled cinnamon. Any ideas?

A lovely perfumed flower. It's day-scented only and can fill a room. I have three of these out at the moment and they're all in the house. No idea what it is and the labels which say "droopy pink" are of little assistance.
Any ideas?

One of them was in bud and has already bloomed, so I am sure that one is a Vanda. The others probably are, too, although a couple of them are obviously immature plants that I guess would be a couple of years away from blooming.
One of them was this tiny fella. I put a ruler in the picture because I couldn't believe how tiny it is -- less than three inches high. The plant is sitting on a little cube of styrofoam plastic in the miniature pot, but the roots are already bonded to the pot and I don't know how I'll get it out (suggestions would be welcome). The plant looks to me exactly like other plants I have that I know are vandas, but it's so small I'm puzzled. I believe it's native to Thailand.
Can anyone tell if it's some exotic miniature, or just very immature?

The flowers are about 2 inches (5 cm) in diameter; there were nine buds on the spike, of which three have fallen/been torn off. Since I don't plan on breeding or selling, proper identification isn't that important, except for my own satisfaction. This one, with about six more that are in awful shape, were handed to me yesterday. Goodness knows when any of the others will bloom -- their roots have been badly abused.

Recently I have had a great deal of problems with this particular plant, and would very much like to know what it is. Every answer I've gotten so far has been proven wrong, and I really just want to know what I'm dealing with. Now when I say problems, I don't mean that the plant isn't doing well. On the contrary, the plant is far too successful.
Pictures are shown below. This doesn't show you the full plant, just one of the offshoots. The leaf texture and the way it browned seemed identical to Spathoglottis, though the base structure is not right. The flowers are very small and yellow, but the plant exceeds 2 meters in height. Someone suggested that it was a Carludovica, but it has no division to the leaves (and Carludovica is meant to have 2-5 divisions). Cast Iron plant was also thrown around, but this plant is near Aspidistra and it is obviously different.
Even if it isn't an orchid (which I doubt at this point), hopefully it's at least something that somebody has come across in the course of their adventures. :)

This was given to me as "a Dendrobium species" - and the 80-something gifter could not remember *which* species it was. Now, these several years later, it has finally flowered.
Call me a crazed lunatic, but it looks, to my eye, like any of a thousand other named, or not, plants sold by HD, Lowe's, etc.
Our semi-annual Swap-fest is next week at the local orchid society...if anybody can weigh in - species? not? it will either go/not go to the swap.
The flowers are quite large, about 4"/100mm and no scent I can detect.

Can anyone specify what type they are?
And if possible when and with what i should re-pot them?

A rather striking spike is opening up at the moment. It looks kind of like a Vanda - the roots and growth form mainly - but I'm not all that sure what it is.
Any ideas? Oh, it's about 3 feet tall and it gets much larger. It was a gifted piece off a huge plant that was growing up (and down, and all over) a large tree. They didn't know the name of it but hey - of the 200 orchids I bought off them, they didn't know the names for most of them.
I'm guessing it's a hybrid, but it is pretty distinctive. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Mon, 09 Nov 2009 08:31:30 GMTI'm pretty sure the bloom in the first picture is a Cattleya. I'm hoping it's a species, because if it's a hybrid it will probably be impossible to identify. The blossom is about 10 cm (4 inches) across. Wish I could get the story of how this plant ended up being sold in a weekly market here in Central Thailand, since Cattleyas seem to be native to Central and South America. Of course, I could easily be wrong -- I've got one new plant which a helpful member identified for me as a dendrobium after I was sure it couldn't be. So maybe it's not a Cattleya, which would be even more delightful.
The second picture is surely a dendrobium. I was struck by the similarity in coloring to the Cattleya. I have no idea what the species might be, but my wife says she bought it because it was different from the common commercial blossoms sold in the market here every week (well, every day, really). I would expect it's native to Thailand. It would be nice if someone could identify the species for me.

Wiganiae last week I was convinced this might be slightly more special than the other NoIDs in the (rapidly growing) collection.
It looks very like a Phal. schilleriana, and Camille very kindly did a check, and we figured that while it clearly isn't the real thing it probably has something of it in it's parentage somewhere. Taking a look at the grower's website didn't yield any specific info either.
However, I've just been to an orchid show and low and behold, one of the vendors had the exact orchid! Ok - so I need to be careful throwing around words like 'exact' but if not 'exact' then somewhere in that neighbourhood! His was a Nobby's Amy cross with schilleriana.
So - I've attached pics, and would love to hear what you all think! While I know it will never be more than a NoID, it's fun to know what it might have been if only for that little white label!

This plant has recently appeared all over my property here in northern Michigan and I think its in the Helleborine family. However, it is much shorter and the pouch like bloom appears only at the top of each stem. The leaves are similar to ladyslippers and its height between 10-12". It had bloomed around July 4th this year. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

It is on a tree branch about two inches thick, and there are ten pseudo-bulbs on the rhizome. I don't have an adequate reference book yet, but I did find one picture of an Oncidium that seemed to have this shape of bulb. I included a ruler in the picture so you can see the bulbs are about six inches high, and they have four or five leaves.
I just got the plant last week, so I've never seen it in bloom, and their enthusiastic statement that, "It has very beautiful flowers," doesn't help much. I sure would like to know what species it is so I would know better how to care for it. Luckily I live in Thailand, so it should thrive outdoors if I can find out how much light it needs.
I really would like to find some way to get this plant off the branch and divide it into three, but the roots are so solidly attached to the wood that I may not be able to do that without killing the plant.

I know it is terete leafed. I did the moisture test on the roots to see if they turned colors and some roots turned green/yellow, but the newer ones at the top turned dark purple/maroon at the tips.
Any ideas?

I ordered it as C Penny Kuroda and that is indeed what the tag says but that little voice in my head tells me it can't be :hmm
All the C Penny Kuroda pics I've been able to find show the plant with spots, which makes sense when you see it's parentage (50% guttata). The other background plants are: gaskelliana, mossiae, trianae, labiata and lueddmanniana.
If it weren't for the huge percentage of guttata in the plant, I wouldn't be questioning it but :dunno:
The bloom is about 5 inches in size, fragrant and the stunning lip is covered in fuzzy sparkly stuff :coverlaugh:

Thu, 22 Oct 2009 03:28:05 GMTI went to Ikea tonight, I always check out their orchids but I've been looking for a particular kind since the New England Flower Show a few years ago (I think they were spider orchids and were brown spotted), but my Ikea only has the Phal... kind. Tonight however I found this, but I can't figure out what it is so I can water it correctly.
Brassia? Cattleya? It has five thin petals and one thick petal on the bottom with crinkly edges.
As I was leaving I stopped by the As Is, and I found ANOTHER one! This one had gone by, it's flower stalk is brown and a number of leaves at the bottom were brown, but I trimmed back the dead leaves and I think it might come back to life. This one was only $1 but is the same kind (the only two non-phals). This is a picture of its base after trimming, do you think it has a chance? Should I trim back the flower stalk to the bottom or to where it starts to turn brown?
Thanks for the help! My brother has a phal but I've been holding out for years and years and I want to make sure these two make it if possible.

One of the photo's submitted for the calendar had a great resemblance to one of my cattleya's, one I never figured out what it was, but I'm quite sure it's a hybrid. It would be very nice to know where his 'roots' lie (well, his pot, ofcource.. I mean his other roots :p).

I'm working on a list of orchids I currently have. Now, I have a large number of plants that will just be surprises when they finally bloom (Small Cattleyas purchased for $1 each, no indication what they are... seemed like a bargain :D). I know I'm going to have a headache when the time comes around and that I'm going to have to be patient... but I can at least start somewhere. :)

When the spike started budding, and there were only 2, I assumed I was getting female flowers, but now that they have opened, they look the same as last year, when I had 12 flowers. I apologize for the quality of the pictures, but these are the best I have. The are hooded, like the females, but I think the coloring is male and they do have pollinia. Or are they hermaphroditic? The pictures of male flowers I found on the internet looked very different from these. Any help would be appreciated.

After my 4 mile run this am, I saw the Botanic Gardens Fall Sale sign. Why O Why do I do this to myself?

So I of course hound hubby to get up so I can go to the plant sale as soon as they open the gates (the orchids always go fast).
They had a really nice Laelia (?) which of course I wanted but the tag had been lost!! :_(
I am hoping that I can identify it. Anyway it is about 15" tall with maybe 10 or 12 p-bulbs and 2 active sheaths with spikes. One spike is blooming (4 blooms I think) and the other has 5 or 6.
The bloom is very similar to the Tenebrosa but instead of orange petals, they are a light green florescence and the column has some white striping in with the fuchsia.
Any ideas before I post the picture? This NOID needs a name so I can show it. :evil:
If not, I will just enjoy looking at it. :think2:
Edited to add the p-bulbs are really elongated, almost reed like and very straight upright.

Apparently it is. The flowers are too small for me to get a good photograph of - really pretty bell-like things about 2 mm in length.

Another unknown softcane dend. I can't get close enough with my camera for good detail, but there are red stripes towards the rear of the labellum. It's lightly perfumed.
I have a few pieces of this around the hothouse, and the big specimen in the third pic is pretty stunning at the moment. Not that the fish pot isn't cute.
Spring has sprung around here and things are blooming again.
This little red and white soft-cane dend lacks a name. Any ideas? It's perfumed at certain times through the day, what I can only describe as floral. I can't get better detail as my camera doesn't like to get too close.

Unfortunately, my visit is a few weeks before Cymbidium flowering season so I can only enjoy few while mostly are currently in spike. :(
This one caught my eyes with very wide flowers but not fully opened. It is grown in elevation about 2000 meters - 3000 meters from sea level.
Any idea what species of Cymbidium is it?

I'm wondering if anyone can identify it. It's very similar to another orchid that I have in both habit and flower shape. That one is a Beallara Peggy Ruth Carpenter 'Morning Joy'. El Avila at an elevation of aprox. 2200 meters (7218 feet), duringmy latest...I have found this plant growing near Caracas (Venezuela) in the N.P. El Avila at an elevation of aprox. 2200 meters (7218 feet), duringmy latest holidays. The pictures were taken on September 3rd 2009.
A friend from Caracas has proposed Epidendrum coronatum. On the other hand, I am quite sure this belongs to the Group Arbuscula (growing habit different than that of the Group Coronatum).
Does anybody has any idea which species this can be?

I know most of my plants have no flowers and i know its harder to identify without flowers but what i am hoping to achieve is just a general knowledge of at least the family and what care the plant needs to survive and even flower. I believe with my untrained eye a lot of the plants need some rescuing.. so this is sort of a rescue mission he he...

They grow on some type of stump that supposedly grows its own leaves at some point. The guy said to keep them in a tray of shallow water, which I have been doing but one of the orchids on one of the stumps is getting brown spots all over it. Hope I don't lose it!
So any ideas on what these unique little guys could be? He said they have white and red flowers.

It is a typical hard caned Den. with yellow/beige twisty petals and sepals and a purple streaked lip. The thin I really loved is that it smelled like honey.

This is my second attempt at orchids after I killed a really nice phal from most likely underwatering it. The oncidium was $12.99 and the phal $6.99, which I was very happy with.
I'm planning on keeping the oncidium either by a south facing window behind mini-blinds that diffuse the light, or a west facing window over the sink in the kitchen. That window is partially shaded, but you can see the sun through it for about two hours in the evening and the light isn't as intense. Any suggestions?
The phal is pretty small. The pot is just under 5" and the flowers are about 2" across. I would like to keep this one by our front door, but this might not provide enough light (this is where my other one died). An alternative to this is an east facing window, also behind mini-blinds to diffuse the light.

Recently, we've been getting alot of these wild, fast growing plants in our front yard.
They're green, with big leaves with a green stalk. They can grow from less than 1 foot to 4 feet in a matter of weeks. In fact, I noticed this one particular plant grow from 4 ft to 6 ft in less than 2 weeks.
I try to pull them out when they're small and easy to pull out. We recently completed a major landscaping project and I'm in the process of laying out new sprinkler system and eventually grass. So our front yard hasn't had any water the last couple of months. Despite the lack of water, these plants are growing all over and growing fast.
Can someone please take a look at the attached pictures in hopes you can identify them for me please?

Sun, 02 Aug 2009 14:43:12 GMTI received this orchid as a gift. I don't know what it is. The Orchid was slow growing and it grew one stem which is now droopy (you can see it towards the bottom). Should I cut it off? The second stem grew fast and is now about 18 inches tall. I think this is a result of moving it to a sunny window. Some of the leaves have brown tips as you can see in the picture below. I stopped fertilizing it and the brown tips seem under control. It seems healthy however it is not growing any blooms. The soil is loose bark and I water about once a week. Any help in identifying and telling me what I am doing right/wrong?

Sun, 02 Aug 2009 12:41:34 GMTAnother mystery orchid bloom in my orchid garden despite the dry season. This one is a small flower with labellum width about half an inch. I'm not sure whether this is Encyclia cochleata since I never see one anyway and reference in internet describe the flower is larger than an inch.
And almost forgot to mention, the flower has a subtle fragrance of baby talc (powder). Similar to Dendrobium trilamellatum.

Thu, 30 Jul 2009 11:03:54 GMTA friend has just been given a plant labeled as Potinara Hwa Yuan Gold 'Gold Angel' AM/OSROC. We have been trying to find any info we can on this plant and first stop was a good old google.
Now I can find quite a few pics of plants labeled as Haw Yuan (eg Blc Haw Yuan 'Jade' HCC/AOC) but I can't find a single Haw Yuan on the RHS register.
To be an awarded plant I thought they would have to be on the RHS register so can anyone give me some more info? I do realise that the plant is probably no longer a Potinara.

Could someone help me identify this Dendrobium for me? I've never had a Den. before so an ID would be really helpful. If any experienced Den. growers want to share some tips I would really appreciate it.
Also, it did have a tag but it wasn't very helpful... it said:

I received this plant as a present about 3 years ago. I had bought some plants, and the nursery included this one as Bonus. The plants is a sequential bloomer... twice per year... last spike produce 6 flowers, but before it has produced not more than 3.. Spike is about 50 cm (20") when the first flower is open, but can grow up to 70 cm (27.5") by the third flower. And it was 110 cm (43") long when it produced 6 flowers!
LS: ~15 inches. Dark mottled leave.

I know NOID phals are almost impossible to identify. Its fairly small, flowers are about 2 inches across and the larges leaf is only 7 inches.
