I have a Vanda Pak Ching. the little spike grew to a vouple of inches but now it looks like it is drying up...
I wonder what would be the cause.
It hangs on a southern window gets good sun a few hours a day - supplemented with CFL.
It is growing new roots and those look good.
I wonder if the humidity drop caused this.
In the summer I had 60 % or more now just 30/40%. should I mist more in the future? isn't it bad to mist in between leaves?
for this may be too late but in the future?

]]>It is in about 50% humidity and temps of 65-70. I mist every day and have dunked it for 10 min for the last two days...but it has not seemed to help. :(

I grow my Vandas in pots with bark. What product should I use to treat this Vanda and do I treat the entire plant (leaves, roots and spike) will this affect the spike? I also have four other Vandas currently in spike - so far they look ok :pray: - is it ever too early to start treating a spike? My Vandas never go outside and I want to ensure that treatment for the thrips will not pose any risk to my dogs.

My aunt gave me a Microsaccus griffithii and some other orchids for my b-day this year. I did some searches and came up with eveything I need except for lighting recommendations. I have a terrarium I keep other species from the same region well. It's about to bloom so I dont just want to toss it somewhere and burn it as the there is a decent amount of light on the tank, but also some shady spots. Anyone keep Microsaccus griffithii? Have any suggestions, I would appreciate it! ]]>
I have 2 phals, 2 paphs (or slipper orchids), 1 Dendrobium and 1 miltonia and am looking after these just fine.
I was after a Vanda for my birthday and was lucky enough to get one, a Sansai Blue. Needless to say i love it to bits. It came from a florist who has apparently had orchids for years. Yet when it was presented to me, it was dusty and the leaves looked pretty crappy. I cleaned the leaves with a damp tissue and the plant looks a lot happier now.
But upon closer inspection i noticed there are a few black bits on the leaves. A couple (litrally 2 or 3) black almost round dots and a few black speckles around the tips of a couple of leaves.
Now i have been looking all over the forums for some sort of definate answer, but figured getting pictures was the only way to get the best of all your brilliant advice.
My mum, (bless her) took it back to the florist who cut the bottom two leaves off (they looked a little ropey) and said there was no chance it could be any type of fungus.
What do you think?

A few years ago I got a Lou Sneary (blue) in bloom and there were 2 plants in the pot, one in bloom and one that was not. I gave one of the plants to a friend and kept the one I am posting pics of. I was expecting a nice blue Lou Sneary when low and behold, I got a pink round creature instead!! Anybody have any idea what this could be be? Is it even a Neo hybrid? Thanks for any help on this one!! ]]>
It looks like the flowers on the left spike are deformed (Dorsal Sepal is veering off to the right) but the longer spike with 8 buds looks good. Hopefully the malformed spike won't be indicative of similar problems in the future.
Just finished opening over night so I haven't gotten a chance to check if it's fragrant and obviously it still has a lot of buds that need to open but I'm pretty excited about it. ]]>

she was great. the best. She sent me some photos of plants for sale and price range. I picked one and then I was indecided. She asked what my budget was and she sent me an email with suggestions.
I received the package promptly with great plants. one flowering. Since it was a bit prix fixe it was cheaper than à la carte.
and she included a few complimentary free keikis and divisions. maybe it was because we are both immigrants and so on. But she was great and the plants were great.

they look very similar in the photos i saw online and they both share V. cerulea. I am wondering if culture requirements and habits / blooming are very similar.
I also have a Vanda tricolor, Mokara Chao Pray and
a Ascocenda Yip sum x Ascocentrum sagarik that has really long roots.
any advice?
I hang them on my shouth window and have some additional CFL light.

]]>The specie Vanda denisoniana exists in many different colours and shapes. Unlike many Vanda , it is fragant mostly in the evening. In Thailand, it can bloom two times a year : in spring and, again, during September-October. Quite happy this plant blooms a second time ! I do have other plants with different colours (and shapes) but, sorry, no flowers right now.
The var hebraica is well known but is anybody know how is looking like vanda denisoniana var. tessellata ? It is very difficult to get any infos. There is a plant in Thailand called " Sam Poi Luang Sii Daeng". It can be translated like Vanda denisoniana red-pink colour. Can it be ? If not, how is this variety looking like ?

]]>I am curious about what successes you've had and methods you've used to grow tropical vandaceous orchids in temperate / cool areas.
I live in Sydney, where Winter and Summer are extreme opposites - Summer days are frequently above 30C (sorry, I'm not great with F temp) and even over 40C is not uncommon. Likewise, Winter nights where I live are commonly 5C and we can have Winter day temps of no more than 12C.
Nonetheless, I am having outstanding success with the following species:
Aerides falcata, Renanthera monachica, Aerides multiflorum, Angraecum sesquipidale, Dendrobium discolor, Paph. sukhakulii, Paph. moquettianum, Aerangis modesta, Vanda Gordon Dillon x V. coerulea, 8 varieties of Vanda coerulea (proper species), Vanda tricolor (currently as big as me, with two keikis and seven flower spikes!), Vanda tesselata, Papilionanthe teres, Renanthera imschootiana, and more!
These are not recently bought and in fact, the V. tricolor is on its third flowering for me after a particularly cold Winter.
Let me stress that these plants are outside, under an alsynite awning, but otherwise exposed to the elements.
I water them with collected rainwater when available, or with saved dirty aqaurium water from water changes on my tanks. I use an orchid specific soluble fertiliser from mid-Spring to early Autumn.
I understand that some of these species reputedly do "OK" in these conditions, but many would say that others, such as the R. monachica, do not.
Please share your experiences with me - I am keen to see what everyone else is doing with their hot growers...

I have begun noticing little black bugs on my Vanda spikes. I hadn't noticed any until one of my Princess Mikasa 'Mood Indigo' had begun a new spike, I tried removing them but the flowers were ruined
I am now noticing them on my Suksamran Sunlight - what can I do to remove the bugs and save this spike before it is too late?

It is seldom grown here.
I purchased this plant from a friend several months ago. The plant was dehydrated while arrived. Luckily It now blooms and new roots grows.
The bloom is small, about 1/2" in width but emits a nice fragrance.

]]>I fell in love with your merilii X Gordon Dillon 'Lea'. I called Smiley but she said she had NO MORE. The next day I had an e-mail, she found one with a slight swelling which hopefully is a bud forming.
She warned me it was a large plant. I measured it when it arrived, 58" of roots, 28" of plant, total 86". Wow!!!! I hadn't expected it to be that large.
I ordered that one and some Masdevilla plants. That will be the end until spring. I don't trust shipping, even with heat packs in our cold weather.
You were a bad enabler, but thanks anyway. You know my facination with Vandas. I'm sure I will love the blooms, if it is a bud forming.

Hopefully will find out if it blooms true to form, I've been growing it in a large vase since it arrived in March and it's now throwing off an inflorescence... will keep you all posted as it develops and we'll see how it looks when it blooms.
The only thing making me wonder is whether or not it might be tolerant of cooler growing temps such that I could put it in a basket and hang it out doors here in So Cal. I know that might be possible with V. Manuvadee, which is at least 50% V. coerulea, not sure what V. Mimi Palmer does to the mix.

]]>I just purchased three plants from an orchid auction and got them for a steal, however one looks a little sick (then again i have very little experience so who knows!)
there are isolated black spots on one leaf (of about 20) and another plant is a little yellow on the bottom couple of leaves... however it is trying to bloom so i dont know how bad it is..
they are getting plenty of water... every morning ill water them and 15minutes later ill spray them down again.. from what ive been reading they could be getting some more sun since they apparently like some good direct sunlight???

The climate here is different from where I locate and very suitable for vandas.
Well, finally caved in and bought a V. Manuvadee I saw at a garden show in April 2008. This was followed by a V. Motes Indigo and a V. Mikasa from an ebay seller in Canada in July, followed by a V. Tokyo blue from an ebay seller in Hawaii, followed over the next few months by three more, some with more coerulea in the mix, some with less. I also discovered I could keep the coerulea varieties outdoors most of the time except for one or two colder months.
Well, just thought I'd share a few of my summer successes with the outdoor vandas this year:
V. Tokyo blue, bought last december, was supposed to be 1-2 years from blooming but I guess it was anxious:

]]>My vanda vase is in need of a clean and I was wondering how best to do this. My vanda just sits on the bottom of the vase, and so isn't hung in it like some are. (Incidentally, she seems very happy with this arrangement- there is still a lot of space for air to circulate around the roots) I think I'm going to have to soak for a while to ease her out.
So, hints and tips? What should I do with her while cleaning the vase? I'm not too happy about putting her in my sink, as I have a cleaner who uses a ton of bleach in it. My vanda also has a lot of new root growth, and I really don't want to knock off the tips. Are they more fragile than the established roots, or am I worrying about nothing?
Or should I just forget about the whole project, and just leave my grubby finger marks and water residue at the bottom be?
Any thoughts?

In Taiwan, it usually blooms in late summer. The flowers are long-lasting but not fragrance.
Mine looks great, nice green foliage without a blemish on it, currently growing a new leaf. However, it also seems to be pushing out a basal keiki. Is this normal? I wasn't aware that these branched...at least not until very mature, and at 6" I don't even think mine is bloom sized yet. Is this a sign of a problem?
I bought it in February and immediately moved it from rotting bark into semi-hydro. It has quickly filled the pot with roots and is now putting out it's second leaf this year. It is growing in a south-west window with unobstructed light, getting direct sun for 3-4 hours a day, and very bright indirect light for most of the rest of the day.

]]>I wanted to share about an award I received this weekend at the West Palm Beach Judging Center for the AOS. The award was given to one of the very first vandaceous plants I ever bought...in fact it is one of the first 5, if memory serves me correctly. :D
When I first got this one it was only about 10 inches tall on the main stem with 3 tiny keikis at the base. It took two years to bloom, and has been doing so each summer for the past few years. Last year I entered a photo of one of the blooms in the calendar contest and was happy to see it made the November page. :biggrin:
The three original keikis are blooming now and there are an additional 7 well on their way. This year it has gone wild. Right now it has 64 blooms and 10 buds! :yikes: When I received my award I decided to name it after my brother Rick...it is now Trichoglottis brachiata 'Richard Genovese' AM/AOS.

The guy told me that was the orchids' hospital - but it seemed to me it was more of an execution chamber for Phals and Dens.
anyway I bought one small orchid of the Vanda alliance - there was no tag the guy that sold it to me for 5 $ told me it had flowered already - and I could still se e the stem - he had no idea what the flowers were like [his wife, the orchid "person" was not there. Anyway I want to grow it in this small Ikea vase I got for a dollar that seems perfect size -
I would like to leave half a inch of water at the bottom for humidity. i wonder if a root tip would reach the bottom it could cause root rot.
also - I read some people soak half hour weekly and some daily. what is teh best regimen?
these days here it is 90 F/30 C.
Also being small and having flowered I wonder if this is maybe a Renanthera. can you help me ID?

]]>I am seeking cultural advice on Rhynchostylis retusa. I just got one and am feeling intimidated about how exactly to care for it and have had a hard time tracking down any info about how to do so.
This orchid came to me in a plastic bucket with nothing in the pot except one big chunk of something organic that I think was meant to retain moisture and increase humidity. I have since relocated him setting him as gently as possible in a terra cotta pot on top of some rocks and over a tray of water (so basically is bare root and set in a humidity device). He is in a corner that gets lots of bright light but no direct sun. I have been misting him 3 or 4 times a day trying to make him comfortable in his new environment and after the trauma of shipping.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Should I simply cultivate him like I have read to cultivate a rhynostylis gigantia?
I seem to be doing the best these days with vandacious orchids and so hoped this guy and I might be happy with one another.

what are the chances of getting it to survive and sprout new roots.

I think this might be a stupid question, but how do I best get my Vanda to flower again? I bought her a few weeks ago, and she is happily living in a Vanda vase, but the flowers have started to fade and I can't find instructions about what to do next? ( My first Vanda, but not my first orchid I also have some Phals and a Slipper) Do I cut the flower stem down like I would a Phal? Above a node or right down at the base of the spike? Do I keep feeding while not in bloom? (at the moment feeding v.weak orchid feed (1/8 dose) with each watering)

I bought this plant a few months ago as a Vanda lamellata. It has just bloomed and now I have a doubt. I think it is looking like var remediosae.The tip is pink (it's not so clear on the pict, but it is) and the flowers are 4 cm (1.5 inch).
For yourself, what do you think lamellata or lamellata var remediosae ?

I asked if they new what colors they bloomed but they didn't take notes. H. who works here, let me have a closer look at the plants and offered me the three of them for 15 euro's. How could I say no! ;) From two, the leaves looked very well, the third plant was a bit odd shaped... but for that price...
Now I wonder if I can see from the shape of the leafs if I have a Vanda, Ascocenda or an other intergeneric? Also I wonder if I can predict the color of the flower by the color of the leafs (like Phal's with purple flowers often have more pigment in the leafs)?
H. told me these could be reds, orange, purple´s ore yellows.
Currently it's past midnight here, will make some pictures from the leafs tomorrow. Maybe you can give me a hint what these Vandaceous plants might be, but I guess I have to rebloom these first :biggrin:

Here are some pictures of my Aranthera Anne Black, again in bloom. I purchased this from Soroa orchids back in March 2009, in bloom, and it's now blooming again. The flowers are a lot darker and with less yellow than the previous flowers. I hope you enjoy.

I 'm searching Vanda Luzonica and Vanda SAnderiana Alba, but I didn't find them. I live in Italy and I can buy only in Europe, because in other extra Europe Countries there are problems with custom, so and so.

Google searches don't turn anything up, so I thought I'd post the question here and see if anyone has images/experiences with these kinds of crosses: essentially, anything extending outside the normal range of the angraecum x aeranthes (ie has anyone seen an aerangis x angraecum cross before??)
I was surprised to find out after roaming a few boards that the idea of hybridization especially with relatively rare and endangered orchids (like the various aerangis and angraecum species) can be a touchy subject - I suppose it seems counterproductive to conservation efforts which aim to maintain large gene pools of pure species. Nonetheless, from a scientific standpoint, I think it's fascinating, especially when examining the potential of geographically isolated vandaceous species like the angraecoids to interbreed with other vandaceous genera like ascocentrum (from Asia!) ]]>
Of necessity I'm an indoor grower, but I think I still have the conditions to make it work. I'm on the top floor of a tall condo with unobstructed south-west exposure. Light levels range from about 1500fc in the morning to between 3000 and 4000 in the afternoon. For the few hours that direct sun comes through my window the light meter blasts past its 5000fc limit. Humidity in the summer is always >50% and I run a humidifier in the winter to keep it around that mark too. Temperatures in the summer are usually around 25C (77F) though a bit lower inside in the winter. Should this all be sufficient to eventually get it to bloom? I don't want to shell out the cash if it's not likely to work.
Also, I'm unclear on the difference between Vandas and Ascocendas. They always seem lumped together when people are discussing Vandas. Do they have any different cultural requirements? Size difference?

]]>I recently (roughly a month or two ago) bought a Vanda Orchid from LOWES (one of those orchids in the bag that arent blooming) and planted it in a small glazed ceramic pot using firbark Course Potting Mix (orchid mix)
I water it when it seems dry (normally every other day or so ) and It is outside and receives Morning sun from around Id say 7 untill 11:00am... the rest of the day it is shaded and then in the evening gets filtered light. So far so good.
Though I havent noticed an abundance of growth , i can tell it is growing.
Recently (past 3 days) I noticed that on one of the leaves its developing a strange discoloration.
No, it is not raised, nor is it rough/bumpy... its just discolored. more toward where the leaf attaches to the "stem"... Instead of being a nice green color its very dark green and blotchy...
Im concerned about what it might be and dont know what I should do, or if its just natural discoloration for whatever reason...
Any ideas as to what it is?

]]>I bought it in January in the PNG lowlands (sea level) with beautiful flowers, and brought it home here to the highlands (5000ft). It gradually adapted and put out new roots after a couple of months, then in June I saw the first new flower spike emerging. It had about 7 buds on it as it started to grow, I think, but gradually, one after the other, they started to turn yellow, then brown, then black and fall off. I still have three that could turn in to healthy flowers, but the others are all dead or dying. The attached picture shows what it looks like. What do you think is the most likely cause?
I have the plant hanging in a mango tree, where it gets dappled sunlight, and make sure it gets watered every day (not too hard with the tropical showers here).

as you can see , it is high season for Christensonia vietnamica, mine has just bloomed a few days ago.. It is the third posts about this plant this month. Hope you will not get bored...

The purple one is Vasco. Pine River Pink, a very popular hybrid. It blooms spring-summer, and this is it's third consecutive spike. About the time the flowers are starting to fall off one spike, the next one is starting to open....and it smells good, too!:biggrin:

In Taiwan, the wild plants can be found in big trees in low mountainous areas.
The flowers are tiny, about 1 cm wide.

This flower spike is taller than the plant.
Anyway, I have read they are a cooler temp grower. Can anybody confirm this? Do I have any chance of ever getting it to bloom in Florida (orlando, middle of the state).

]]>Maria here (the crazy and orchid-instatiable girl she is, ahem......) is thinking of buying a one flask of each of the above-named orchids. She is thinking of purchasing them from this ebay guy from out of the country.
Maria and I checked IOSPE, and several other web sources. They seem to be interesting plants. Huge, but interesting. HUGE, but scented....at least the lissochiloides.
In any event....I wanted to check if any of you vandaceous experts grew these and what you can share with us about the plants. IOSPE says the lissochiloides is huge..... and that both are scented?
If you own these, can you share pictures/growing tips, culture or any other information? I appreciate it.
I try to control her, but Maria always sneaks in orchid purchases and such when I'm asleep. SIGH.

]]>Even on one plant, each flower is unique with different spot pattern. They are also very fragrance before mid afternoon. Seeing this orchid, one cannot resist the temptation to take a closer look and smell the pleasanant scent.
I am looking forward to expand my collection with Vanda tricolor from different areas around Indonesia. Prior to purchasing this flowering Vandas I have acquired 5 blooming size of Vanda tricolor var suavis from Eastern part of Java and seedling of Vanda tricolor var alba. I can't wait when they all flower and enjoy the variations of this beauty.

Sometime an orchid just calls to me! I purchased a bunch of orchids the day that I bought this one, and it was priced slightly out of my range, but....I couldn't stay away from it! My husband had already put the purchases in the car when I told Louis DelFavero that I must have it! As usual Louis just laughed and said I knew that you'd end up taking that one home. He knows me too well. It was the only one that he had other than his personal plant. My husband thought that he'd done such a good job of keeping me under control and was shocked when we got home and he saw the price tag on it!
My daughters are still laughing about it, as he told them that he couldn't trust them to go with me, as they've been with me before and I've managed to buy too many ( I don't know how that keeps happening :evil:) :rofl:
