Fri, 20 Nov 2009 03:19:30 GMTA pretty happy little Masdevallia. I got this one winter at Parkside's annual sale, and was a bit worried that it might not be as warmth-tolerant as my other Masdies. No need for concern: it took off like a shot over the summer, and burst into bloom this month. Nearly three dozen spikes, more on the way. It's growing in a three-inch slotted plastic pot in straight sphagnum, and gets watered just as the moss is starting to dry out.

Mine grows like a weed. It's covering its mount and many leaves are strong and thick and healthy. I've had the darling for a couple years now.
I have tried high light, low light, fertilizer, no fertilizer, little fertilizer, etc. I water it little because it's in a tank in which the humidity is very high (and it has lots of winding aerial roots) -- and it rarely, if ever, dries out. It gets the occasional misting these days; I used to dunk it in water. It doesn't seem to care - it grows the same anyway...like a weed.
What am I doing wrong? I adore this plant. Would love to see it begin flowering. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

When I bought my Masdi veitchiana in August it had the start of two new leaves. This being my first Masdi I watched their progress every day.
BUT...
As the new leaves grew I noticed that the largest was folding up inside it's sheath. It seemed like it could not break out of the sheath and as it tried to lengthen the growing pressure from the sheath caused folds. :scratchhead:
I carefully (very carefully) slit the sheath and freed the leaf, it continued to grow and is now a reasonable size. If you know where to look you can tell where it was kinked but you need to know where to look.
Thinking that it can't be normal to have to do this (no-one in the wild to do it). I left the second new leaf. It seemed to get fatter inside the sheath for a while then stopped. Finally when I decided to slit the sheath I found it had rotted. :_(
So then, quite close together after this 4 more new leaves started. I could see that the largest two were doing exactly the same and folding over. I again decided to slit the sheath and actually found one of them had two sheaths right to the tip. I slit one first and when it still would not break free slit the other. Soon after I slit the one on the 2nd largest leaf.
These two are very kinked, you can see the largest in the center and the other one is on the left. It's been a couple of weeks and they have not really straightend, but they have grown noticablly and are starting to open the two halves. The larger leaf behind the center one is the first one I removed the sheath from. It is open but on a shorter stem than the older leaves.
It seems like the sheath is just too thick for the leaf to break through and I'm puzzled how this is suposed to work :hmm
Of the two which started arround the same time one is growing well and appears to not have got caught at the top of the sheath but seems to be extending out of it (this seems more normal to me). That's the one on the right behind the old leaves. On the other the sheath is completly enclosing the tip and I can't decide if this one is growing still or not. That can just be seen at the bottom of the center ones.
I noticed this morning a further 3 growths just starting. These are too small to see how they will develop.
So...
Anyone any ideas why this Masdi seems to need intervention for the leaves to grow?
The enviroment is as follows...
Temp - 11C to 20C for the last 6 weeks, but it was getting up to 28C when I first bought it. The last few weeks it's been closer to 11C to 15C.
Light - Unsure exactly but it's getting the same light as my Phals. It is in an east facing window with no artificial light.
Medium - A very small pot of moss. The moss seems good quality with very long strands. The pot is one of those mesh ones which is more holes than pot. It dries in about a week and I water it when the moss gets just crispy feeling. I check it twice a day to see if it is ready for watering.
Other - it should get some air movement as it is next to a slightly open window, just on the catch so it's still locked. The window is left wider open some evenings and at the weekend. (I'm trying to let the temp get cold in that room for this Masdi).

The sheaths, instead of producing flowers, produced new plants. It was funny, because it came the occasion when I had a three-floor plant: a stem, which had produced a new plant on the top and the new plant supporting a third seedling on the top... I made countless pots with these seedlings and gave away.
After several years without any blooms I gave up and hang the pots together with my Draculas, just to free space on the bench. There it continued to produce seedlings from the sheaths instead of blooms. What was my surprise a few weeks ago when I saw two (two!!!!) blooming stems arising!!!
By the way, it was not only I. I never knew of any blooms from any of my friends who also have this plant until this year, when their plants also bloomed.

Sun, 06 Sep 2009 17:20:04 GMTThis flower is quite small, about 3/8" across. But plentiful, this spike has about 20 flowers and there's another 2 spikes a week or two behind this one.
These flowers are fuzzy with little hairs around the edges and although my pictures don't show it, the blooms are slightly transparent with a light source behind them.

Being a species and noticing that no seeds were ever sent to Troy Meyer I thought it would be fun to see if I could pollinate it. Problem is, it is so tiny I can't seem to find the anther cap or stigma. Does anyone have experience pollinating Masdevallia?
I'd love some advice!

Wed, 12 Aug 2009 21:48:49 GMTI've just recieved my first Masdevalia, it's a Masdivallia veichiana.
I have no idea if I will be able to grow it in my enviroment, but I decided to give it a go anyway.
It came potted in sphag and I've never grown anything in sphag before. I know lots of Masdi pics I've seen have been in sphag and I wonder if it is the best medium for this sort of orchid, but at the same time it's not a medium I am used to.
The pot is one of those plastic mesh type, where there are more holes than there is pot. The sphag is also very loose looking and seems quite fresh.
When I got it the sphag was really dry and the pot was so light it kept falling over. I put it in an outer pot mainly to stop it falling over, but once I watered it it was standing up better anyway.
So what do you think... should I leave it in the sphag or should I repot in fine bark like I am used to for other types of 'chid.
I was planning on pulling it out the pot in the next few days anyway to get a look at the roots, but not sure if I should then return it to the sphag or try it in bark. :hmm

Sat, 08 Aug 2009 18:21:32 GMTThis one has been in bloom for a couple months - it's a sequential bloomer. You can see some of the old flower stubs. This blossom is droopy because I have been fighting an aphid outbreak with Merit and the plant was pretty stressed about that. The next blossom (to the left) should hold itself more normally. There are around 10 spikes either newly emerging or previously bloomed. The pot is a 3" one for scale. This is a warm-tolerant cross and is planted in fine bark. It sits in a south-facing window.

I run 3 small fans 24/7 to keep constant heavy air movement. This way they make it through summer warmth. The area they grow in maxes out in summer in mid 80s (F) and runs mid to low 60s in winter and spring.

Well, I have a bloom on the braclypus! I've taken recent pictures of both, and you can see that they both made it! You can see the original leaf from all the new growth that came from it. It's been a long wait, but so much fun to see!

This weekend, The Orchid Gallery from Chattanooga came and did a presentation on the challenges and ways to grow the cool growers (Milts, Masdies, Dracs).
They brought their special Cool Pots and showed us some tips for an indoor cool windowsil setup.The Orchid Gallery
It was very interesting, so of course I just had to try it again. I told them my conditions in my work cubicle and they recommended Highland Monarch. Hopefully it is not doomed.:dumb::dumb::duh::duh:

The last time I saw it was Thursday...I have a Masdevallia newmaniana that was preping to bloom. It was most certainly going to bloom this week. The last time I saw it was Thursday afternoon, I left it in hopes that it would survive until today (Wednesday) without any help from my part. I was wrong. The plant survived well enough, but the flower bud is limp and unopened. I was sooooo looking forward to this bloom.
What happened you ask? Well normally the plant sits on the wall of an open aquarium and this space gets lots of fog and humidity created from the ultrasonic foggers in the tank. This fogging action is a double edged sword. Its wonderfull while it works, but it will soon devour all the water reserves in the tank. When I went to check the tank today, I found a dryout tank. I had left it with 6 inches of water. Not enough for 5 days.

I'm a proud new parent of a Dracula Lotax. I wanted to try something new and after some research decided that this little guy would work best for me and my growing conditions. Not to mention the flowers are too cool.
Anyway, I have a couple of questions. (yes, I'm a nervous mom) When I ordered it, I was expecting to receive a tiny plant, however, I received an overgrown 2.5" pot. I repotted and it's growing like a weed and I think it has spikes (maybe a dozen or so) because they do not look like roots and are growing horizontally and up. It came with a few brown leaf tips. Is this ok? maybe from too much light or fertilizer? Also, some leaves have small brown spots, about the size of a pencil mark, is this OK? or should I be worried? All of the new growth is perfect. Finally, how big should the plant get before you divide, since this guy is a monster in a 5 in pot! How do you divide?
