Wed, 18 Nov 2009 08:18:58 GMTThe only source of cheap orchids probably TJ's. I miss the fragrant of orchids. Especially Miltoniopsis but the hot weather of So Cal makes it harder than it should be. So the price is good for me to try. But I wonder which common TJ's orchids are fragrant since many orchids only fragrant part of the day. I have seen Andres Wild West over there.
Any suggestion?

Here are the other two ......So I went shopping to get pots for some orchids and came home with more orchids (as well)!
but this one is a Miltoniopsis Maui Charm (probably a trade name).
It's a large plant with 5 spikes in total. 1 spike fully open, 2 large spikes of buds and 2 small spikes nestled in the leaves. The pbulbs are also huge.
My previous attempt at growing a Miltoniopsis was not very successful (although it's still alive), but I put that down mostly to the plant having bad roots to begin with. The roots look a lot better on this one as far as I can see and it's also a lot bigger so I'm hoping it's going to do better.

After I noticed it was getting burn spots I brought it back in I don't think it ever recovered the leaves seemed to be ok then one day all the leaves just turned yellow and died. I have decided to get another and give it another try but I am very afraid to do anything with it. Any advice as to what to do or not to do with the next one I won't have it for a few days just trying to figure out what is my game plan with this one.

The pot has three prominent slits on the bottum for drainage. I keep the plant outside & it gets well diffused light. I water about once a week, fertilize every third time or so with water soluable orchid food. The plant currently has two flower spikes. My question is the pale green color of the leaves normal for some oncidiums? I have another oncidium & it has dark green leaves.

That most often is a mistake cause I always come home with something that resembles an orchid...
Fred Meyer has a habit of marking down all blooming orchids once the flowers die off. They had a great display of blooming orchids but I was looking for the bargins. At the end of one aisle there they were and some were still blooming. Two Onc. where sitting there saying take me home they were reg. priced at $19.99 but marked down to $5. One of them had wrinkled bulbs the other I could not find anything wrong with it. Sooooo I took them home. I know one is an Onc. but not sure about the other.
I have justified buying these since I have lost several. That makes sense doesn't it? :coverlaugh:

Sun, 08 Nov 2009 00:08:27 GMTToday when on the hunt for clay pots, the manager of the tropicals department at Lowe's was in. She knows me from buying a ton of plants there. Anyways, she said they had a new orchid shipment coming monday and needed to clear what they had left - so i walked out with two Oncids that were 30$ for 3$ a piece and 4 BS Catts at about 1$ each.
The Catts are in almost perfect health but the Oncids on the other hand had some pretty bad rot. I took them out of the decomposing sphag and cut off a ton of roots, leaving all the new emerging roots. What do you guys think about bringing them back to health? I plan to let them dry out for the next few days and repot them in large bark ...
What's your opinion? I really hope I can bring them back and rebloom.
I obviously still have some cleaning up to do with the roots and removing the rest of that sphag ...

I think the flower is 'upside down' to my way of thinking. The lip is to the top, above the dark orange column. The petals are an off-white. The flower is less than a 1/2" across. And there is a slight fragrance.

When I bought it as a small seedling the vendor warned me to not plant it in any soft medium (tree fern, sphagnum, bark...). He was firm in saying the plant should be mounted on a hard wood slab, or it would die. At home, I decided to take the risk and planted it in sphagnum... well, it not only survived, but grew very well and bloomed in a short time! Sometimes, experiencing can show new ways!

Just want to share my new discovery :D.
When this plants starts a new growth/spike, it's very difficult to see what it is exactly. Also when the conditions are not to a plants liking, spikes seem to turn into new growths in no time. Has happened to me plenty of times :(.
I had been monitoring this one closely because I noticed 2 new growths a while back and wasn't sure what they were. A few days ago I noticed that my plant has 2 spikes!!!!! :cheer:
I am very pleased and can't wait for it to bloom!! :D
Now, I haven't find many posts about this specific orchid, so I wonder, do many people grow this beautiful specie?

This past summer I bought a Brsdm kauai choice so the lable tells me. But when I go online to find info on it there is nothing. What I do find online is Mtssa kauai choice. I have not seen it flower yet. It actaully almost died on me. I had it on the back deck but we had such a wet summer and it was a new divison with not many good roots. Well to say the least it lost all but one leaf and the Pbulbs started to rot. However I babied it back to health and now it actually has the keiki growing from the top of the old Pbulb with about 2.5-3" of roots. I thought this strange but then also noticed instead of one dormant eye waking up and grwoing from the Pbulbs about 5 in one lot started growing. I thought it was a mutation at frist but now they are all forming well. I guess thats another question I have. Shoud I let teh 4-5 little ones grow in a tight bunch like that? Any thought or ideas woudl be great here.

I'm basically wondering if anyone grows this, and could give me some advice. I got it about 9 months ago, as a cutting with 5 or so back-bulbs, and it started growing profusely in my tank. It had 5 new growth fronts, looked really great. But, before any could mature (about 4 months ago) the leaf tips yellowed, then browned. The new growth slowed to a standstill, outer leaves yellowed, roots started dying. I thought overwatering, but it's got such fine roots, and I let it dry pretty well. The only thing I can think is temp. Daytime temps in midsummer were in the 80's, which I know must be pushing it, but could that really have such an effect??

Wed, 21 Oct 2009 17:44:53 GMTI bought this plant about a year ago and it was full of spikes and blooms. Well, it's had new spikes on it now for close to 2 months, but they won't open up. Even producing more spikes, but old ones aren't doing a thing.
And now the leaves are turning yellow. It is in a 5" clay pot that was repotted after the initial blooms. I left about 1.5' growing room and ow it's to the edge, so I am thinking of repotting it to a larger pot, but afraid I'll lose those new spikes.
We had a heavier than normal rainy september, and the first weeks of october were hotter than normal. I've been keeping up with fertilizer and fungicide, but I'm at wits end for this thing.

I haven't looked at the roots yet but I might have to repot. I gets watered about every 4 days and sits on a high shelf on my patio facing East. Can someone shed some light on this for me. I'm curious how long the spikes will get and how long it will take to finally bloom. I also have orchid wiz so I looked up its parentage. I find the length of time orchids take to mature pretty fascinating.

Well, now it has bloomed and though the flowers are small, there are plenty of them and they have the sweetest scent!

I d love to hear some opinions: does anyone know if this variation of red dots is studied? are there any known registered clones? (my plant has got no dots, and now I want a clone with a lot of dots)

I believe it was my first orchid more than 10 years ago. It had this amazing branched inflorescence on a tiny plant. I bougth it as a NOID at my local greenhouse(most likely ionocidium Popcorn).......Of course I killed it pretty quickly (First orchid syndrome).
Since then I've been trying to find this hybrid of ionopsis another time as I'm a big lover of miniature Oncideae but without success.

Mother-in-law had this and after it flowered, cut back the flower and repotted. But the bulbs were very shrivelled and now looks to be struggling. And some leaves turning yellow and falling off.
Feels loose in the pot. Am keeping to moist.
Does it need more time or is there no chance? It's now outside and weather warming up.
Appreciate any help.

I found these four plants at Lowe's today. The garden manager let me remove one from it's pot. Most of the floers were spent and they were being discounted from $25 down to $10. After she saw it was mostly spag in the pot and only a little plant root ball, we settled on $3 each :)
They came in a 6" plastic pot nested in a 6.5" clay pot. As you can see, after removing all of the new spag on the first, the plant root ball is only about 3". But surprise -- an ID tag was hidden !!
The second and third pots contained two plant each. Their root balls had been tightly squeezed together to appear to be one large plant -- but that's OK ! -- two for the price of one !!!
Each plant already has new growths started and good roots.
The fourth plant has a few flowers, so will pull it apart later this weekend.
Question ?? Two of the root balls are really tightly packed, roots twisted together. Would it be better to leave them alone and just repot ? Or should I try to untangle the roots ???

But I think what interest me about Orchid is their ability to revive and what's become my new hobby is to take poor/neglected(and often cheap) orchid and raise them back to health and see them bloom again. Here is another one of my cheap $5.00 Chinatown find. This one looks okay other than the very dried up and very wrinkled pseudobulbs. There are still some leftover blossoms on it making identifying a bit easier. The roots looks very full and healthy. However, the plant is infested with ants, and on my initial watering(drowning of the pot), a slug came out of the potting mix. I have since replanted in proper Onc. mix(small coconut husk mix) and treat the plants with insecticidal soap spray. I'm having problem getting rid of the ants and I'm open to any suggestions on what you would do to get this plant on the right path.

It was on a $5.00 rack along with some other half gone plants the shop wanted to get rid of cheaply. At the time of purchase there was one long dried up spike with two blossoms that didn't make it on my bus ride home, along with some pretty dark and wrinkled pseudobulbs. I clipped the dried up spike and sprinkled cinnamon powder on it, repotted the plant with Oncidium mix from a pricey (but extremely friendly and helpful) online orchid supply merchant.
fast forward two weeks, there's new growth!! Not sure what it is that's why I'm posting this question asking the more experienced folks.

I'm trying to get an idea of what the blooms will look like (if I succeed in getting blooms). I've found pictures of the first parent, but I couldn't find pictures of the particular clone of Hajime Ono. I'd really appreciate any pictures anyone can show me!

They had two great Oncs, an Everlasting and a NoID, and they were on sale. They have plenty of blooms, the roots look good, and they seem to be potted in a medium/fine grade bark, as they both have tiny roots. This media seems to dry out really quickly, so I'm perplexed on how to properly water them. :scratchhead: Should I just water them more often, more like 2 times a week, or should I throw on some spahg on top of the bark to hold some water until the next watering. I dont want to overwater, but at the same time I dont want to underwater them. Thanks for any Advice!:bowing

Wed, 02 Sep 2009 13:54:33 GMTI'm looking for suggestions on the proper way to divide an Oncidium. I have a few that just keep getting bigger and rounder and some are stacking their pseudobulbs. I did a division last year and found the whole process confusing and darn near impossible. When you look at the growth pattern it leads you to believe that you can just pop the pseudobulbs apart. I found this to not be true. They grow together quite securely. So how does one approach the task of division? Do you just slice straight through the plant and suffer the loss of adjacent pseudobulbs or is there a kinder gentler way?
And here is another question. How do you divide (not repot) a large Onc. growing in SH pellets? First you have the difficulty of dividing the plant and then you have to deal with the roots that are firmly attached to the pellets. It looks intimidating. Has anyone successfully tackled such a project?

I purchased this plant today because it was the only one of it's kind in the store shelve and I love how the blossom looks, and I overlooked a few things.
shriveled pseudobulbs, crooked growth, damaged blossoms, split leaves. The plant sits in a 3 1/2 inch plastic pot w/slits inside a 4 inches ceramic pot. The media was extremely dry and the first thing I did when I got it home was watering it. Here are a few photos, do you think this plant is too far gone?
I'm not sure when I should repot, nor the kind of media it requires. This is by far the coolest looking orchid in my collection, please help me bring it back to health.
Lastly I added a picture of the blossoms close up to confirm it's identity.

I've rescued a poor burnt to a crisp miltoniopsis (we've had a lot of hot weather here, and someone has left this poor thing for days on a trolly in 9am-6pm full, direct, summer sun, and as I've never had one of these before, I'd love to hear your wisdom about caring for it. I've cut off the dead flower spikes (2 of them were burnt so badly, they were totally dried out) and cut out 2 now dead leaves. There's still one spike totally intact, and the odd singed marks on other leaves. There are quite a number of healthy ones still though. I gave it a good water, then left it overnight in my kitchen sink to drain well (but also quite a humid room)
First question, would it be a good idea to give it a nice big dose of orchid food to help the recovery?
Secondly, when I turned the pot over, I noticed something looking like florists' oasis packing the bottom. Is this a good plan for one of these plants? It seems to go against anything else I'd do to care for my other 'chids (Phals, Paphs, Vanda) but they are very different types I think! Is repotting a good plan right now, and if so, what would you more experienced keepers recommend?
Thirdly, almost all of the aireal roots are also scorched (I think) They resemble strands of shredded wheat breakfast cereal. One or 2 went green on watering, but the others have stayed yellow/singed and crispy brown. Should I remove these, or just leave them?

I've been a lurker for awhile and have found much info in this forum. I'm in PA and most are by windows and outside in summer. I do have a one shelf growlight area with a few there as I'm learning what each orchid prefers. I just purchased this Howeara Lava Burst Puanani and have noticed that the leaves and the pbulbs are quite wrinkled.
I am totally new to this orchid but did find some info online which agrees with what I was told. I just want to make sure I am understanding why the orchid looks like it does. The pbulb towards the center of the pot which does not have a bloom is the most wrinkled as are its leaves. Is this because this one has already bloomed and will eventually die off? (just a guess?) I assume it will stay where it is because the orchid needs it.
My other concern is all of the pbulbs are a bit above what looks like bark potting medium. The small ones and the many roots are actually quite a bit above it. Is this normal or should it be potted just a little deeper? I know many orchids have roots above, just wondering about this one. If it does need repotting should I do it now or wait until it finishes blooming?
My guess is it needs to soak in water for a bit but how long and how deep should the water be? Should I do this several times over a few days as needed? Should the water have anything in it? I do have 2 large oncidiums which normally I run water through for awhile until the roots turn green (do this every 3 or 4 days) but I do need to soak in plain water for awhile a few times times over the summer. I'm just not sure about this one. The average humidity in our house right now has been 55-75%. Hope the pictures are clear enough.

Thu, 23 Jul 2009 13:24:54 GMTOk, so I'm not really surprised that after my miltoniopsis got too dry while I was away it has a couple of leaves that have turned yellow.
I've kept it watered since I got back, but is there anything else I should be doing? :scratchhead:
The two pseudo bulbs are also very shriveled, will they get better or will they always be like that now?
Also I'm worried that some of the other leaves look too dark. Is this likely to be due to the lack of water last week, or could it be lack of light? :hmm
Finally, I'm not comfortable yet with looking after this plant at all. I am worried about over-watering it at the same time that I am worried about under-watering it :(
I re-potted it when I got it a couple of months ago and the roots were OK (I think) but the pseudo bulbs were already starting to shrivel slightly before I went away and I'm paranoid the roots have died since I saw them. Were the pseudo bulbs shriveling because I was not watering enough (which is quite possible) or because the roots have rotted.
The new medium was pretty open and very well drained and I don't want to disturb it if I am just under-watering. What would you guys suggest, should I take it out and look at the roots again or leave it be and up my watering slightly?

I need help with an oncidium hybrid that I acquired from Exotic Orchids of Maui last December. The orchid is Rdcm. Enchantment x Ocd. Velvet Teenie.
I received the orchid on a mount from EOoM and have left it that way. I had decent success with the orchid. It grew most of the winter and it flowered a little while ago and then re-flowered again. It recently lost its flowers. Both times got about five flowers roughly.
I have several questions:
1. Is this the best media for my situation? I see many others put oncidiums in a mix. Or should I go with a larger mount?
2. I seem to have sprung a keiki and maybe 2, which is very exciting. There appears to be one up top (called Keiki 1 in pics). What should I do with this? When should I separate it? Should I experiment and put it in a different media? Then, there seems to be a less developed one on the base (labeled Keiki 2 in pics). Same questions.
3. Is it time to cut back the stem? If so, where do I cut the stem?

I have this little guy hanging in a Keawe (mesquite) tree and it gets direct sun for most of the day. Unfortunately, taking it out of the tree would be a real hassle so I had to take pics in situ so they aren't great. The scent from this near miniature species is awesome! It should be, after all it is one of the grandparents of Sharry Baby, which I will probably be posting pics of in a few weeks.

So firstly, am I correct in that this "Miltonia" (as per label) is actually a Miltoniopsis?
And secondly, could someone help me ID it? The closest I have managed is "Maui Sunset", but only one photo I have come across was identical.

It has one long stem with four arms/stems coming off...Hello, A few months ago I bought a lovely orchid which I now know to be an Oncidium Incurvum. It has one long stem with four arms/stems coming off the main stem, these and the top of main stem produced beautiful flowers for about 7-8 weeks. The last flowers dropped off about 4 weeks ago. Please could you advise me whether to encourage re-flowering I should cut each of the 4 shorter stems back or do I cut the large longer main stem back? There were about 10 flowers at top of main stem and each branch below had about 4-5 flowers. It is almost 60cm tall at present. I've only ever had moth orchids before and have cut them back with successful re-flowering but Im not sure what to do with this new one.

Maybe I should add that I live in Glasgow, Scotland and bought the plant already in flower from a florists in about March this year, so it has flowered through our spring, and its now the start of summer here.

It appears from my google search that Beall's cross is what I have, Mtdm. Red Pali x Onc. Honolulu. I could not find any pictures of Staal's cross though. Does anyone know what Milt. Hamburg x Onc. cariniferum looks like ??
The plant pictured has three new leads each with a new flower spike. Flowers have a ns of 1-1/2" and are 2-1/2" high. But the flower count seems a little low, only 4 - 5 buds. Any suggestions to increase flower count ??

I discovered this discoloration on the pseudobulb of my onc. It doesnt seem soft or anything...we did have a bit of a heat wave last week and I'm wondering if it got too hot? It sits near an east window on a humidity tray and gets regular misting on the moss only. It gets watered when dry. All the roots I can see look happy, but the flowers are drying up and it really hasnt been in full bloom that long. How long do the blooms usually last?
Any ideas?

Mon, 08 Jun 2009 19:00:12 GMTSo I was in the garden center looking for clear plastic pots for my Phals. Didn't find them, but even though we are meant to be on a tight budget I could not resist this NOID.:biggrin: Hubby gave me 'one of those looks' but it was quite a cheep one so he didn't object.
It was labeled us as Miltonia and I'm not 100% if that is right, but I'm working on the assumption it is, unless anyone tells me different.
I've never had one of these and I'm mainly used to caring for Phals so I could do with advise on how to care for it.
I'm also slightly worried about the roots. When I look closely it looks like it was in a smaller plastic pot, and then has been put in a larger pot... with the small pot still there inside :evil:
I know with Phals people often say they repot as soon as they get them home. Should I do the same with this, especially if I'm worred. I don't really want to loose the flowers by repotting, but at the same time if you guys tell me it's best I would rather look after the plant than the bloomes. Basically I am wondering, how well do these do with repotting :hmm
The psudo-bulbs look good and plump (others in the shop were very wrinkled) and the plant looks in good shape from what I can see.
Anyway, I've taken a look at the genus care sheet Miltonia - Orchid Board but if anyone has any additional advice about care it would be great to hear. I'm not sure if mine is a warm or cooler growing version so I think I will have to care for it somewhere in between.
Oh and it's fragrant. My first fragrant Orchid :cheer:

On one of the peusdobulbs there is an extra little 'bump' right where the leaf are from and as you can see it actually pushed the leaf base up and it's all this alive. I'm just curious if anyone knows what it is or why it's there. :)
I know it is hard to see in this picture, sorry! But it is on the left bulb in the bottom right of it you can see the leaf base pushed up.

I suspect that I have put the plant in the correct genus (?) but I'm not even sure of that. All I know is that I put it with my Paphs and it hasn't died yet. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Its in a 1.5" pot, but the roots are coming out the top and now encircling the pot. When I took the pics, I noticed some yellowing and spotting on some leaves, which may be because it got too cold the other night. Its now outside, under a dogwood tree, with the Phal.'s but it looks like it needs something. I fertilize it weekly with 1/4 strength orchid food, but should I repot it? I'm leaving for a month and I need to leave directions on watering it for the plant keeper who knows Phal's but not this nor the HWCR's but they're looking ok. One has been repotted (Scent of a Woman) and the other will hold till I get back. Any advice on repotting, needed or not, and light and temps are greatly appreciated. Hopefully I can find the pics as I know they're online, by the manage the attachments.

Like a speckling throughout.

I've got a Tolumnia from C&H (Robsan 'Orchid World' AM/AOS x Newberry Dancer 'Behemoth'). Seems to be alive by my eye, but the leaves have gone from a nice, vibrant green to a... well.. to a dark green (see pics).
There is some new growth (the 3 smallest leaves that are closest in the picture), but they too are coming in dark (though began their respective lives much lighter).
I read elsewhere that this can be caused by having light conditions that are too LOW. Is this a potential culprit? Is there some other, more prevalent factor that I might be missing that causes this kind of symptom? Will the leaves ever regain a lighter colour?

Thank you for being so nice to me on these first days of being suscribed to OB. Ive been growing a Odontoglossum hallii for around 3 months now and when i got it it was in flower and now the new growth is about 15 cm tall. I really dont want to kill it! It is the first species that i have gotten and if you can give me advise on growing it, it would be great. There is one problen but it is very very light. I am starting to see some pleating on the new growth. What is the best way to fix this?

I have a Colmanara Wild Cat which has a large spike right now. It's only a 3 PB division, and was purchased in spike last Summer as a 2 PB plant, but had two large spikes from one PB. This year it's just one spike on the new PB.
Was there something that made it happy enough to bloom, but not happy enough for two spikes this go-round? It is potted in bark, and was re-potted right after it finished blooming last Summer.

I've got a very healthy Beallara Tahoma Glacier green, and it currently has 2 large pseudobulbs which has just finished flowering, and 1 older pseudobulb which only has 2 leaves left on it. The 2 large pseudobulbs have recently spawned a new pseudobulb each.
I would like to find out if there's a way of converting some of these pseudobulbs into backbulbs? (storage and transport purposes) I'm quite keen on just removing a pseudobulb, and removing its leaves and roots and hoping that it'll dry up. Would that be advisable?

Sun, 26 Apr 2009 09:41:12 GMTHi, I bought this in November in bloom. It did well, finished blooming about 2 months later, set up 3 new spikes. But ever since I've had it the p-bulbs have been getting more wrinkly (they were plump when I got it) and the blooms on the new spikes are much smaller than before. Also they've started to die after only a month.
There is new growth (roots and new p-bulbs) but I don't understand why the flowers are so poorly.
The plant is on a windowsill in a westernly window, getting intermediate temperatures, potted in s/h.
Anyone got any clue what I'm doing wrong?
