Cattleya leopoldii var. lisa (unspotted)

This is a variety lacking the regular purple spots. Besides, it has a very charming light pink lip instead of the regular dark purple. This is flowering for the first time and the plant still is young and small.

The blooms:

Hi friends!

Some showy orchids in the CPO Orqchid this weekend Show (my choices)
1) Amazing Brassavola
2) Well-grown C lueddemanniana semi-alba
3) Laelia purpurata russeliana
4) Oncidium sphacephalum
5) C maxima alba
6) C x dolosa alba 'Suwada'
7) Laelia sincorana (1st place in its category)
8) and 9) Laelia purpurata 'roxo-violeta' (purple-violet) (1st place main category, L purpurata)

A short history about the Champion (LP purple-violet): a vendor (#1) looked at this plant in the tent of another vendor (#2), before the beginning of the show. #1 bought the plant for R$ 30,00 (~U$ 15.00) and put in the competition, winning the 1st place. The sad :(( :(( #2 told me this history, pulling out his hair!! (I called him a donkey, but he told me that this would be an offense with donkeys!). I confirmed the whole history with  #1!!!!

Hello to all. Although I started a few threads before, this is my official introduction. :waving

I have been growing primarily Paphs under HID lights for the last 10 years. HOWEVER, I stared growing/collecting Vandas after reading " *Vanda in a vase*" thread. Well, it was doing ok, but I did not really like it after all. Then, I pulled each one of them out of the vases and built a "Vanda" house with PVC pipes with shower curtains. It was only less than $50 project from Lowes.

12 of my Vandas are snuggled in this house and they all get 5 mins bath every day. I see so many good-looking Vandas in EBay and keep telling myself that this is not a good time to get plats shipped.

As for the pictures, well. When Santa brings a new camera, I will post them.

BTW, mollycart came from Molly ( my Wheaten Terrier ) and cart (my MINI cooper).

Thank you. Naoki

We have had a plant for several years - it grows well, has good colour and generally seems to be doing well but, it has never bloomed for us. The plant is in a 4" pot (which it has almost filled); we keep it in amongst our Phals - it gets a fair bit of natural light, and temps in the 22C to 18C range (indoors - it summers outdoors in a shaded spot). It is potted in medium bark with moss added to retain moisture.
Any 'tricks' we could use to get a flower? We would dearly like to see a bloom on this one!

Thanks,

Hi,
I have a beautiful cymbidium whose flowers are dropping off, just 3 so far. It has been flowering for ages so I understand that.
However, I've just noticed the white stuff that looks like fungus on the roots.
What do I do? Soak and repot? Dry out and repot? There are so many different threads on cymbidiums, I can't work out what do to.
Thanks

Well, I bit the bullet yesterday and moved the chids into my little greenhouse.

For the past week I've been monitoring temps and humidity using my idea of borrowing the heat from my workshop to warm the ghouse. Well, half of my idea worked, the other half didn't. :(

Temperature wasn't too hard to control but I found I had no control over humidity. I could soak the greenhouse floor and benches with water and the humidity jumped to about 40% and then within half an hour it fell back to about 30%. My shop was supplying heat but stealing all the humidity.

This morning I went to Lowes and got a DeLonghi space heater. With the heater on and the doors to my shop closed things started to look much better. I added a small 4 inch muffin fan to help move the heat around. Tonight I think I might be able to grow orchids instead of cactus.

I just checked the ghouse tonight it's 25f outside and temps are right around 60F and the humidity is right at 50%, instead of 25% like last night.

Pictures of my puny collection. :_(

It is blooming size and I just repotted to make sure nothing was rotting and all I noticed was that the media was really dry. What is the best way to take care of this plant.. does it need a rest period? I can't find any info on this plant. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

My boyfriend is the most fantastic man in the world. He went to a flower shop that was letting a paph die cause it was no longer blooming and bought it for me. This is the 1st paph i have ever owned and unfortunately since its no longer blooming i have no idea what she is. I was hoping for some help with her, maybe some general paph guidelines. She had a new shoot budding when he brought her home that has been steadily growing. Each leaf that grows is bigger than the previous one, i think that is a good thing right? And the colour of green is that same as the 1st shoot but the oldest leaves on her 1st shoot have started to go yellow and fall off. I have lost 2 leaves in the past 4-5 months, is that normal? The new growth is still going strong tho. I inspected the base to look for parasites and repotted her to inspect the roots which look good. If it helps with her id her roots are fuzzy and so was her flower stock and her leaves are slender. I have her pot suspended over another pot that has a bit of water in the bottom to keep up the humidity but she is not standing in it. I use full spectrum bulbs and incandescent bulbs to supplement the lighting cause shes facing north (north facing apt). I feed her a diluted 20-10-20 fertilizer

Totally confused here and I know someone will be able to shed a little light, my way.

I went to the orchid show in Delray today and left with a Dendrobium dearie. The vendor told me to keep this is low light ("Phal light is perfect", he said), to keep the plant moist and depending how cool it's kept, might or might not, lose it's leaves and either way, will bud/bloom beginning in February. I got home and did a search and Dendrobium anosmum "dearie" is all I found.

So........................

Is this one in the same? And if so, the culture tips given, totally confuse me because I keep my anosmum, dry this time of year. The pic of the flowers (on the display table) were pure white. Is anosmum and dearie, different or the same and, wrong growing advice given?

I plead total ignorance. Thanks for your help, here.:bowing

Here is a first time bloomer that I got this in a trade this spring. The spike had 8-9 buds on it but my wife broke the spike and only one survived :( This plant is mounted on a piece of drift wood. It is grown warm and gets full morning sun then bright light the rest of the day. I water it daily in the summer and every other day in the winter.

Hi everyone!!
I have had orchids for almost 2 years now and have done pretty well for a beginner. My main reason for coming here is that I have some strange spots on 2 of my phaels that I think might be fungus. Yipes! I will try to research on here to see what it might be.

:waving I'm new to orchids, but have learned quite a lot from the Orchid Board. Thanks to everyone and the advice they have given me!
I would like to try Semi-Hydroponic culture, but really don't know where to start :blushing:. I have recently re-potted all my orchids, but one, in an orchid bark mix. Two of them were in bloom and are opening buds they had before purchase. I'm surprised they didn't drop them! Anyway, I know that I will have to wait some time before potting again, so as not to stress them. This should give me time to do some research and get some AWESOME advice from you guys on the OB! :bowing
I took a look at Ray's site and will probably get my stuff from there. By the way, GREAT site Ray!!
I really don't know how long I need to wait to do this. :scratchhead: I'm hoping for a keiki from a phalaenopsis that has had some trouble since I got my claws on it :_( . I may start with that, should I get a keiki, in a couple of months, maybe. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks everyone!!

LP heater question

Greetings -
I got a heater unit that screws onto the top of a propane tank (like a barbeque grill uses); even on 'low' it puts out an impressive amount of heat.
So, I know that people who use natural gas or oil-fueled heaters have to be very cautious in using these around orchids, because even a slight gas leak will cause bud drop in orchids.
Does anybody know if propane would have the same effect? I've been using a little electric box heater when the nights are too cold (and winter has come astoundingly early to balmy south Louisiana). I'd sure like to use this propane heater, but not at the cost of my buds!
Thanks - Nancy

Zygo advice requested

Last March, a friend of mine bought a Zygo in bloom at a show. While she loves the blooms, neither she nor her husband are known for their plant care abilities. (There are times the plants only get watered because I'm visiting. LOL)

Well a few weeks back they gave the plant to me to try and rescue. Most of the pbs had turned brown and soft so I cut them out. Unfortunately or fortunately, for the plant, I haven't had the time to do more than that and give it a drizzle of water once a week.

The sections of the roots -- about 1 inch (2.5cm) worth -- immediately extending from the pb area are shriveled but after that point are white and very firm/crisp -- they'd rival a stalk of celery for crisp snappiness. There is some signs of new green growth (though not root growth) at one end where the only 2 ?healthy? pbs are -- one of which is very undeveloped so perhaps was an attempt at a spike? (never grown a Zygo before). Much to my surprise there are now 2 new growths at the opposite end. They actually look like they arose from the roots themselves and not a pb, though I'm sure there must have been a pb node down there somewhere. The roots had filled the 4" pot and are very tightly packed.

So now the Qs:

Should I just repot the lil bugger as is?

Should I attempt to divide it -- though I fear the 2 brand new growths would get snapped off?

How best to divide it, if that is what is necessary, without completely destroying the roots? (They seem like they would snap all too easily)

A pic of the newest growth follows.........

How important is pot size?

I have a NOID that i got from a really shifty convenience store, I didnt think she was gonna make it... her leaves were tattered at the ends, the pbs were shriveled and some had no leaves on them and she was potted in a poor quality potting soil :O. After repotting and some TLC my poor little girl pulled through. She has a couple pathetic looking pb that she grew while regaining some roots (they were almost all rotten) and is now in the process of growing (what looks like its going to be) a nice big healthy pb. My question is... How important is pot size? Her pbs grew in a straight line rather than a cluster so i need a big pot to fit her lengthwise. Can i cut off the old pbs that have no leaves on them? Do they provide nutrients to the other pbs?

Bug Replelent on My Phal

My Phal was doing very well...when I got it , it had no flowers just a spike. I had it for a few weeks and it flowered nicely. I was proud that I helped make this plant happy enough to produce these nice contemporary white flowers. Right around the same time I got my Phal I went out and bought sapplings and potted them (my new bonsai trees) and put them in the same window as my Phal. They were all doing well. My Phal started growing new roots and everything, I was quite happy. I came home from my girlfriends parrent's one night to find a shiny residue on the leaves of all my plants in that window. I wiped a Phal leaf with my finger and tasted it. It burned my tounge and I insantly knew it was "Off Bug Replelent". My girlfriend and I live with three other people and two of them have no respect for plants or hard work at all. The leaves on my bonsai trees immediatly turned brown. The peddles on my Phal started to wilt and black spots on the leaves started to form. My Phal now has no flowers. When I saw this I rinsed all the plans off thuroughly but this did not help.

Should I cut the spike?

When I got the plant it didn't have flowers and I left the spike, it grew a new spike from the existing one and flowered. I looked at my Orchid carefully and it looks like there's only been one other spike, the spike I see now would be the second. I know you're supposed to cut it off at some point (which some one did to the first spike before I owned it).

What should I do about this plant?

degarmoara bud blast

I have a winter wonderland that has spiked up beautifully, 3 spikes! It looks really healthy but the buds on one of the spikes are starting to blast- I've lost 2 so far. Could this be temperature related? I live in the pacific northwest, it is fall now and a lot less natural light coming in. I had all my oncidium alliance outside in the summer and they did really well, but now they are indoors and the fall light isn't great tho I do have incandescent light and they are near a large window. I am also wondering if being too near the window might be causing temperature change issues. I also have a colmanara that has blossomed on 2 spikes, but 2 more spikes are sulking and won't open.

any thoughts to get these buds open? I would hate to lose them all.

I have been growing phals for a few years now, but I'm not sure how they grow after a few years. I grow mine in pots, some are quite tall with 10 leaves or more. They flower regularly, but they are starting to be too tall--and top heavy for the large leafed phals--for the pots. I suppose in the wild they would just be supported by the tree they grow on, but I don't have that option in my home. Would phals just keep growing under normal conditions or do they stop at some point :hmm ? I'm afraid some of them might break near the top. I also have an other question about a smaller phal I saved. The roots started rotting so I had to severely prune the roots and repot. The phal is doing well now with new roots and is flowering, but it also has roots growing mostly above the lower two leaves which is also where the spike is. Should I replant it again deeper in the pot with these roots in the medium? I read that the roots growing above the potting medium are air roots and would rot if potted, is this true? Why is my phal doing this :scratchhead: ? I am attaching picures and would appreciate any info. you might have.

Bought this as a flowering size P. philippinense 3 years ago at a reasonable cost. Its finally flowering. The buds looked different to other phils I've flowered. Its half open and I think a new name can be applied, not philippinense. Any guesses, I have 2 picked out.

The two plants below are identical. The plant on the right is from a single bulb that broke away from the plant on the left. I noticed that the bulb had a couple of green eyes and since I like to propogate things, I potted it in a two inch pot. That was about two or two and one years ago. When you see it written that this plant quickly grows into a specimen they were not joking. The interesting thing is that the plant on the left spent outdoors from April to November. Notice how much darker it is than the one on the right that was greenhouse grown.

I will post another picture when the large plant is fully bloomed.

The plants are Bc Maikai 'Mayumi' HCC/AOS (C. bowringiana x B. Nodosa)
The third plant is Ascda. Princess Mikassa (no clonal name) that produced four spikes. Just posted it for fun.

Repotting Zygosepalum

I boughtg a Zygo in bloom several yaars ago. It has grown but I think it needs help. I think I should repot it; some of the pseudobulbs are shriveling and are getting softer--is this common for old pseudobulbs or do I have a problem here :scratchhead: ? It had new growth that rotted--I think it was touching the pot--I cut it and the plant dried and recovered nicely at the cut. Anyway the remaining new growth looks healthy but is mostly growing way above the medium, also the leaves have black spots on them. How do I repot it :hmm ? Do I keep the old leaves and pseudobulbs? Is it normal for the normal growth to be above the medium or should I plant it deeper???? I am attaching some pictures, please help!

This is another of the giant Dens I have, over 5 ft tall with the spikes. There are 4 or 5 spikes...and one broke off last week when this and the other giant got knocked over by a massive wind that came through the one window I had open in the room! :duh: Surprisingly, that was the only damage :whew

Even though I usually enjoy wierd, unusual plants the most, this extremely common critter is still my favorite Catt type species. Right now I only have 2 spikes, but they both grew so long that I could not fit the plant in my usual picture taking area so I had to take the pics on my couch. Sorry for the shoddy shots, but I have MUCH better pics of the same plant from last year in my gallery so there was not as much pressure to get a killer shot! Anywho, enjoy!

Build a Shade House in a Budget

Image: http://www.orchidboard.com/community/gallery/data/515/O.jpg rchids seem intimidating to grow for most beginners. But take it from this beginner (for the second time) they are easy to grow. The thing you need to watch out for is over/under watering and over fertilizing those are the main killers of plants of any kind. Another consideration is where to grow them. Some grow in windows, some under lights, some on their porches/lanais, some in green houses (if they have the area and money) and some like me a shade house. I have the warm weather here so year round shade house growing is the ticket. Of course even in more temperate climates it will work for late spring to early fall or into winter in south Texas/Florida or where you can maintain a good humidity say 45-55%.

Shade Houses can very simple lean-to

Dendrobium Aussie Chip: light?

Hi all,

I recently got a Dendrobium "Aussie Chip" that is sprouting all over the place, despite it being winter. Anybody grow this little guy, and have an idea as to its light requirements? Would it do okay with the Phals and Paphs, or would it be happier in a higher-light situation?

Thanks!

Semi-Terete Ascda vs. Strap Leaf

In an earlier thread (11/14/08) I posed the question of the difference between a terete and strap leaf vanda. In between I discovered that my newly acquired Ascda. Nora Tokunaga 'Lemon Pie' was a "Semi-terete". Swamper wanted to see what it was like so here it is. Note: the leaves on a terete is pencil like being almost round where as a Semi-terete is opened a little unlike a pencil (round) or a strap leaf which is opened rather flat.

As you can see it has a spike beginning to form and I will post pic. when it blooms.

Neo division question

I have a Neo Shutennou that didn't end up blooming this year, but it did make a bunch of new growths. One of the new growths has somehow come loose from the rest of the plant. I'm not sure if it somehow got bumped loose, or if this is a natural process of the plant. It's green and healthy looking and a pretty decent size. It has at least one root that I can see. I think the only thing holding it on is that its root is sort of tucked under a root from the main plant. Should I try to separate this growth from the rest of the plant and put it in a pot? Is this normal for Neos?

Oh, and I think it didn't bloom because I was letting it get too dry. I've adjusted my watering schedule and hopefully I will get blooms next year.

Phal spiking from crown

I have often heard it said that when your plant receives an award...it can be the kiss of death! I have a phal that was awarded last year...an AM of 82. It has two spikes on it now...one properly located and the other from the crown. Do they always die if they bloom from the crown? How about cutting the spike...is there a benefit from that?

Thanks,
antkaren
