Dendrobium parishii care
Default Dendrobium parishii care

Hi everyone,
I've been trying to find info on Den. parishii care, but all the posts seem to focus on the winter rest and not on cultural information.

I'm actually interested in how much light they need. Do they need very bright light or direct sun like the nobiles?

Also, how do they compare to the anosmum? Are the anosmum easier to grow/bloom?

Thanks!

Both D. parishii and D. anosmum have similar cultural requirements. Other than the cooler rest period, just as with the Nobile types, they need lots of water once they come into growth. Also, fertilizer. I keep them in half-sun, much like the Nobiles, but a bit more shady. A couple of hours full sun, mornings or late afternoon seems to do them good, but I do live in Germany and we have less sun than Brazil, generally.
It is difficult to compare them with the Nobile hybrids, which are a very mixed swarm selected for their ease of commercial bloom. They are much more dependant on cool rests for the buds, which allows for control over the blooming period, while both parishii and anosmum, as well as pendulum, primulinum, wardianum and related are less dependant on the cool rest and prefer it generally warmer. All seem to benefit from a slight temperature drop during the dry season.

I just watch my plants for signals, such as completed canes, new roots, etc.

Hope this helps

Hi,
Thank you for the reply! I decided to give them a try and bought a parishii, an anosmum and an aphyllum x primulinum hybrid.

It doesn't get very cold here where I live, but it is enough for the nobiles to bloom every winter. The ones that do best for me get several hours of sun, but I did a bit more research and it seems the parishii, anosmum, etc, prefer bright shade.

I will mount them outside and let nature do its thing
