Default Dend. Spectabile tag question

Well, I just got a Dend. Spectabile from my local Lowe's that says Dendrobium spectabile "H&R" x spectabile "Hoosier" on it.

Whats the deal with it? My googlefu is pretty good but Im finding nothing on this one.

It doesnt look like the species as its only about 7" tall with the tallest pbulb being about 3".

Just ask if you guys want some pics.

My best guess is that it's not mature yet and just big enough for them to sell. They tend to get large over time. The breeding just means that two specificly bred ones of the species were bred together. It's still species but the hope is to get a better stock/flower.

What Paul says is exactly correct. This cross was made at H&R & these plants were produced & sold in community pots to another grower. Then that grower potted up the CP's & grew the individual plants, to be sold at Lowes.

H&R has a number of different unrelated parent plants of Den spectabile & different combinations can sometimes produce different results in the offspring. For our purposes, we carefully record the individual parents to trace the results in the offspring. Plants sent out of our nursery have this information on their tags.

Most of our customers who grow plants for big box stores don't bother to put on such detailed information. This grower did.

Even for other species, the choice of different parent plants can matter greatly. Of course, there also are many species which we propagate, that we don't indicate specific parent names. This is the case when we have found that we can use different parents pretty much interchangeably, with similar results.

Freaking awesome information! Thanks for that.

It was a better gro bag baby so when I saw the H&R tag I knew it was a good one to get.

Just Google "Den (or Dendrobium) spectabile" - there should be plenty of hits
