They are naturally fully deciduous and go dormant in the winter. They were never meant to be evergreen.
The natural cycle of growth occurs during spring and summer, sometimes continuing to grow into fall. They bloom and drop leaves in the fall, and they remain dormant in the winter.

Forgot to mention, your mix might retain too much moisture for them. I have no problems growing them mounted outdoors here in SoCal all year round.
