Vappodes phalaenopsis (Cooktown Orchid)
Vappodes phalaenopsis (Cooktown Orchid)
Originally found in north-eastern Queensland Australia from Cooktown to Font Hills west of Mount Molloy.
coastal scrub, littoral rainforests, riverine vegetation, monsoon thickets, vine thickets, swamps and gullies in open forest. Plants grow on trees and rocks and rapidly recolonise disturbed sites
Taxonomy: Vappodes, originally described as section Phalaenanthe within Dendrobium, was recently redescribed at generic rank (Jones and Clements 2002).
Nomenclature: Vappodes M.A.Clem. and D.L.Jones, Orchadian 13(11): 492 (2002).
Type species: Dendrobium bigibbum Lindl. [Vappodes bigibba (Lindl.) M.A.Clem. and D.L.Jones].
Dendrobium sect. Phalaenanthe Schltr., Repert. Spec. Nov. Regni Veg. Beih. 1: 447 (1912).
Flowering period: March-July in Cooktown but it started to spike for me mid-September and it opened most of its blooms a week ago and had buds still to open. This is the second time this has bloomed for me; I got it from the seller blooming size but with no flowers yet.
I had it all summer on direct sunlight and it loves to drink and eat a lot…this orchid doesnt need a winter rest, it is perennial and evergreen
